The gang hides in a time bubble for seven years this week as they review the ultra low budget sci fi, Freaks (2018). Pete's choice this week is a relatively unknown gem starring Emile Hirsch, Bruce Dern, and Lexy Kolker that takes a fresh and interesting take on the super hero genre. Did Tyler and Joseph love it as much as Pete did? Does it have what it takes to compete with the MCU? It is rare that a film can be wholly original in this day and age. Yet, when the right elements and genres are paired together in a unique way, the result can translate to something that is quite unique and refreshing to watch in a previously tired and uninteresting single genre. This is exactly what happened with the TIFF world premiere film, Freaks, starring Emile Hirsch (Into the Wild, Speed Racer), Bruce Dern (The 'Burbs, The Hateful Eight) & introducing the very talented young actor Lexy Kolker. The writing duo, Zach Lipovsky & Adam B. Stein, struck gold with this exceptional cast and even more intriguing story! So without further delay, enjoy this review of Freaks! In tonight's edition of our DINNER & A MOVIE of FRIDAY FAMILY FILM NIGHT - the Mister and I review FREAKS (2018), currently streaming on Netflix. Writers and directors Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, tell the story of a lonely little girl who pines for a normal life with loving family, while trapped in a dilapidated house with her overprotective and super paranoid father who claims he's doing these things to protect her. Lexy Kolker gives a magnificent performance as 7 year old Chloe and we predict, one to watch in the coming years. Emile Hirsch, Bruce Dern, Amanda Crew and Grace Park round out the main characters in the film. Please note there are SPOILERS in this review. For a film in a more horror vein, check out 1932's FREAKS by Tod Browning now streaming on Hulu. Shout out to Tony M for recommending this movie. Tonight's spectacular dinner was courtesy a recipe of Uncle Leo's - veggie pasta which includes sautéed onions, broccoli, quartered artichoke hearts, black olives, quartered tomatoes with onion powder, salt, pepper, Italian seasoning over tricolor pasta. Lexy Kolker is the star of the horror film FREAKS. In this episode Lexy chats with your favorite host GALAXY about her experience working in TV and Movies. Lexy is very smart, funny, mature, and a very talented young lady.  Alexa Kolker, who goes by Lexy, was born on August 17, 2009 and is already making waves in the entertainment industry. She was introduced to acting as a toddler by her older sister Ava Kolker. Lexy is best known for her work on the USA network action thriller, "Shooter" playing Mary Swagger, the daughter of Ryan Phillippe and Shantel VanSanten for its 3 seasons and running. Shooter has brought Lexy a lot of media attention for her acting and even led to her being nominated for the 2017 Young Entertainment Awards for Best Recurring Young Actress 9 and Under in a Television Series. In March 2017, Lexy traveled to South Africa to shoot a major Guest Star role on the CW pilot, "Searchers" where she played a fanciful girl named Fable, at the age of 8. Most recently, Lexy filmed an arc of 6 episodes in the popular series Marvel's Agents of Shield where she plays a seer. Lexy has also played strong roles in five indie films including two lead roles. Her first lead role came at the tender age of 6 in an emotional film about the 911 aftermath in "Our Little Secret", which premiered in official competition at the Tallin Black Nights Film Festival and was also selected to screen at the Moscow Film Festival. She then had strong supporting roles in "Female Fight Squad", directed by Miguel A. Ferrer, opposite Amy Johnston, Sean Faris and Dolph Lundgren, "You", "The Case of Jonas Booker" and "A Little Mermaid" due to be released August of 2018 where she is told a new version of the fairy tale, 'The Little Mermaid' by her grandmother, played by Shirley MacLaine. Lexy will next be seen in "Freaks" directed by Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, which tells the story of a little girl who discovers a world she was never allowed to be a part of. Freaks was selected to premiere at the Toronto Film Festival in 2018. Outside of film and television acting, Lexy loves to sing and perform live. Even at her tender age, Lexy has performed roles for Peter Pan, Hairspray, Aladdin Jr., Seussical the musical, The Little Mermaid and The Lion King in her community theatre and has even earned a "Tony Award" for her performances. She has already developed a loyal fan following on all the major social media sites and makes charity event appearances along with her sister, Ava. Lexy's fans are all excited to see what else is in store for this passionate child actress.   For more amazing episodes go to: www.ComicCon-Radio.com   Follow us on Instagram  @ComicConRadio   Please subscribe to Comic Con Radio Always give us 5 stars. In an age where superhero movies are a dime a dozen, hundred-million-dollar tentpoles with strict formulas and crowd-pleasing spectacles, it's refreshing to see something like Freaks come across our radar. Zach Stein and Adam Lipovsky, directors of shorts and visual effects gurus in their own right, raised the funds for this sleepy sci-fi thriller about Chloe, a little girl (a raw, instinctual Lexy Kolker) hidden away in a decrepit neighborhood house with her overbearing, paranoid father (Emile Hirsch), instructed to never go outside. The world has fallen into disarray at the presence of 'freaks,' people with superhuman abilities who've proved so dangerous that the government has taken to hunting them down.   It's implied that Chloe may possess some of these abilities, with her father taking great steps to keep her isolated from a world that hates and fears her. But as her powers start to grow in strength (along with her curiosity about the world outside her door), she begins to learn about herself, what she's capable of, and where she might find her long-lost mother (Amanda Crew).   Alongside the criminally-underseen Fast Color, Freaks trafficks in smart, lo-fi superhero commentary under the lens of generational family dynamics; while its concerns aren't quite as heady as Julia Hart's fantastic film, Freaks still manages to entertain and provoke in fascinating ways, mostly through its performances by Kolker, Hirsch and veteran actor Bruce Dern as a mysterious ice-cream man with a deeper connection to the family than it first appears.   For the pod, I sat down with Lipovsky and Stein for a remote interview during their run at Fantasia Fest 2019 to talk about the DIY origins of Freaks, handling new and old actors alike, and the timely political undertones of a film about grouping people as 'illegal.' We also discuss the perils and joys of independent filmmaking, of working with what you have, and turning Bruce Dern around on the science fiction genre for the first time since Silent Running.
