Tonight on On Trial, Mark Radulich and Jesse Starcher put two divorces in the dock: Danny DeVito's The War of the Roses (1989) vs. Jay Roach's pseudo-remake The Roses (2025). DeVito's film—adapted from Warren Adler's 1981 novel, scripted by Michael J. Leeson and produced by James L. Brooks and Arnon Milchan—reunites Romancing the Stone stars Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner, with DeVito as the couple's lawyer. A pitch-black farce of marital escalation, it cost about $26M and grossed about $160M worldwide. Roach and writer Tony McNamara retool the premise for modern resentment: Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman, plus Allison Janney, Kate McKinnon, Andy Samberg, and Ncuti Gatwa, as careers invert and the gloves come off. Released Aug. 29, 2025, it opened around $6.3M domestically and has earned about $15.3M in the U.S./Canada on an estimated $35M budget. We're skating on thin ice for the second instalment in Sarah's season dedicated to true crime movies. This time, we pivot from the bleak darkness of Snowtown to the darkly comic story of figure skater Tonya Harding in Craig Gillespie's I, Tonya. Dan and Sarah dive into this fascinating sports movie that explores domestic abuse, poverty and media sensationalism, while somehow remaining incredibly funny – a precarious balancing act which we discuss at length. There aren't many films about figure skating so it's refreshing to see this true story done justice on the big screen with a stellar cast. We examine the brilliant performances from Margot Robbie, Sebastian Stan, Paul Walter Hauser and Allison Janney as Lavona Golden in an Oscar winning role. This complex portrait of a complicated human being, who was routinely failed and vilified by the media, is not just about the “incident,” it's about the people and the media circus that followed. It's a genuinely re-watchable experience and we hope that you join us. What to expect in this episode: We discuss how director Craig Gillespie managed to effectively balance the dark comedy with the serious reality of domestic abuse. Dan and Sarah compare the media frenzy surrounding Tonya Harding to later events like the O.J Simpson trial and the Johnny Depp/Amber Heard case, highlighting the media's complicity in creating a circus around serious subjects. We praise Gillespie as a solid director with great casting choices, noting the ensemble effort. We explore the meta use of the contradictory interviews and the fourth wall breaks, which highlight that nobody truly knew the objective truth. Expressions of disappointment in the lack of a Flying V. Would you like to see the full lineup for season 13? The only place you can see it is on Patreon but you don't need to be a paying member. We're back from the Labor Day holiday and ready to take on the fall movie season here at Breakfast All Day. But first, we're playing a little catch-up with some end-of-summer movies you should know about. First, it's "Caught Stealing," the latest from Darren Aronofsky ("Black Swan," "Requiem for a Dream," "mother!") and perhaps his most accessible film yet. Austin Butler stars as a bartender who gets caught up in in a criminal scheme in late-'90s New York. It's a lark with a dark heart. Zoë Kravitz, Matt Smith, Vincent D'Onofrio and Liev Schreiber co-star. In theaters. Next up is another star-studded movie, "The Roses." You may remember this when it came out in 1989 and was called "The War of the Roses" starring Kathleen Turner and Michael Douglas. This time, Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch play a wealthy and successful couple whose marriage is about to collapse under the weight of their ambition and resentment. Andy Samberg, Kate McKinnon and Allison Janney co-star. In theaters. Finally, you should definitely check out "Lurker," an indie thriller that expertly explores modern celebrity. Alex Russell ("The Bear," "Beef") makes his writing-directing debut with this story of an up-and-coming pop star (Archie Madekwe) and the canny fan (Théodore Pellerin) who insinuates himself into his inner circle. Lots of twists and deeply uncomfortable moments. In theaters. Save up to 30% on select skillets and dual-handle items all September long with Lodge Cast Iron! EVERYTHING'S GOING TO BE GREAT in Theaters now!Director Jon S BairdWriter Steven RogersThe Smart family's life takes a dramatic turn when tragedy forces them to confront their oversized dreams, struggles with identity and chaotic regional theater life. As theater manager parents (Allison Janney and Bryan Cranston) work to support their two sons — a hunky football star (Jack Champion) and his flamboyant, theater-loving younger brother (Benjamin Evan Ainsworth) — unexpected circumstances compel them to move in with Janney's estranged brother (Chris Cooper). What begins as a temporary arrangement soon unravels years of familial tension, prompting each member to reevaluate their place in the world and in their relationships.Director Jon S. Baird orchestrates this warmly observant comedy-drama with a perfect balance of sharp humor and poignant family dynamics. The powerhouse cast delivers nuanced performances, with Janney and Cranston demonstrating once again why they are among the most versatile actors working today. Their chemistry grounds the film's journey through artistic ambition and life's unexpected detours, while Cooper adds layers of complexity as the long-estranged brother. Beyond its headline-grabbing ensemble, the film's tender exploration of how families navigate change and disappointment resonates with authenticity as these deeply human characters stumble toward reconciliation and renewal in this stirring celebration of life's messy beauty.—Jarod NeeceDirector Jon S. Editors - Catherine Haight ACE, Laura Zempel ACE and Isaac Hagy ACE SIRENS editors Cate, Laura and Isaac have crafted a television experience that intrigues and entertains the audience, while also challenging them on conventional gender biases. Their work on SIRENS was not just professionally unifying but creatively fulfilling as well. The team established a ritual of analyzing scenes together each week, discussing tone, performance, and overarching storyline elements. This collaborative approach allowed them to align their unique editing styles into a cohesive representation of the series' narrative. One of the remarkable aspects of SIRENS is its tonal balance—oscillating between humor, mystery, and drama. The show's collaborative ethos even extended beyond the main editing trio. They leaned on the talents of assistant editors like Jen Bryson, who ultimately co-edited Episode 5 with Laura. Based on her play, Elemeno Pea, Molly Smith Metzler's Sirens tells the story of two estranged sisters from Buffalo, Devon and Simon. While Devon is back in Buffalo, caring for their father who suffers from early on-set dementia, Simone is living in the idyllic seaside town Port Haven, working as a personal assistant for a wealthy socialite named Michaela. When Devon travels to Port Haven to bring Simone back to Buffalo to help care for their father, she finds a resistant sister who seems to be under some kind of mind control from her employer. When Devon refuses to leave without Simone, the mystery of Michaela unravels in a blend of drama and dark comedy. Join Greg Alba & Aaron Alexander as they dive into Pixar's 2003 animated adventure, Finding Nemo! When overprotective clownfish Marlin (voiced by Albert Brooks, acclaimed for Drive and Lost in Translation) loses his son Nemo (Alexander Gould, known for Weeds), he teams up with the forgetful but lovable blue tang Dory (Ellen DeGeneres, star of Finding Dory and The Ellen DeGeneres Show) on a high-seas quest across the East Australian Current. Nigel the pelican (Geoffrey Rush, Oscar-winner for Shine and known for Pirates of the Caribbean) swoops in with comic relief, while memorable cameos from Brad Garrett as Bloat (Everybody Loves Raymond), Allison Janney as Peach (The West Wing, I, Tonya), and Austin Pendleton as Gurgle (My Cousin Vinny, Memento) flesh out the tank's eclectic cast. From the iconic “just keep swimming” mantra to the heart-stopping fishnet escape, our hosts break down every thrilling moment and timeless line that have made Finding Nemo a beloved family classic. Send us a textDo you remember Drop Dead Gorgeous from 1999? We do and we don't. We remember that it has a stacked cast in Kristen Dunst, Denise Richards, Ellen Barkin, Kirstie Alley, Britney Murphy, Amy Adams & Allison Janney just to name a few. Seriously, there is a lot more. We also remember it being hilarious. We also think that hilarity might be very politically incorrect now. Either way, we couldn't be more excited. So join us as we go back to the end of the 90s and watch this documentary-style comedy. Do You Remember Liking This Movie?
Are you ever going to text me?This episode was made by humans (sort of).In the spirit of International Women's Day, Jason, Jim, and Joseph list their favorite best supporting actress winners.AI Joseph - it won't let you down after a night of drinking.Jason gets scorned for his selections from last week's episode. It's singing. It's not real acting.Scarlett O'Hara wouldn't have lasted through the civil war and the movie would not have been as good with Joseph and Jason's selection.Jim confesses some of his boyhood fetishes of Rita Moreno and the Muppets. The boys praise Allison Janney's great performance of a stinky mother. One of Meryl Steep's performances comes down to her ability to flinch during confrontations."Were you a failure and the one most important relationship in your life?"Why does a Walter Mathau impression come up so many times in the episode?
Allison Janney shows up for some reason, Sam is feeling argumentative; and Matt is white now.
