"The Diplomat" is an American political thriller television series created by Debora Cahn. First airing in 2023, it stars Keri Russell as a veteran US diplomat who is unexpectedly appointed as the ambassador to the United Kingdom amid an emerging international crisis. It has aired for three seasons, with a fourth one announced. The drama series has received critical acclaim for its writing, pacing, and performances, particularly those of Keri Russell, Rufus Sewell, and Allison Janney (beginning in season 2). At the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards in 2025, the series was nominated for Outstanding Drama Series. Russell has won an Actor Award and has been nominated for two Primetime Emmy Awards and three Golden Globe Awards. The show has been praised for its nuanced portrayal of foreign policy and the often invisible work of diplomacy, as well as its character-driven storytelling that blends political intrigue with personal drama. Sewell was kind enough to spend some time talking with us about his work and experience making the show, which you can listen to below. Please be sure to check out the show, which is available to watch on Netflix and is up for your consideration for this year's Emmy Awards in all eligible categories. Thank you, and enjoy! This week we're grabbing our crowns, polishing our tap shoes, and heading to Mount Rose, Minnesota, for a review of Drop Dead Gorgeous, the 1999 dark comedy mockumentary where a teen beauty pageant turns into sabotage, scandal, suspicious accidents, and small-town chaos. Don, Jon, and Ken talk about the film's stacked cast, including Kirsten Dunst, Kirstie Alley, Allison Janney, Ellen Barkin, Denise Richards, Brittany Murphy, Amy Adams, and Will Sasso. They dig into the mockumentary style, over-the-top Minnesota accents, cult classic status, and whether the comedy still works today. From exploding threshers and “bad wiring” to pageant politics, creepy judges, and Allison Janney stealing scenes, the guys break down the good, the bad, and the absurd before wrapping things up with trivia, plenty of banter, and their final ratings.

In 2011, director Tate Taylor adapted Kathryn Stockett's bestselling novel into a feature film with an all-star cast including Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, Emma Stone, Bryce Dallas Howard, Jessica Chastain, Allison Janney, Cicely Tyson, and Sissy Spacek all getting a piece of the pie. Set among upper-class white families in early 1960s Jackson, Mississippi, aspiring journalist Skeeter (Stone) chronicles the lives of the black maids who play pivotal roles in running households and raising children, against the backdrop of segregation and the struggle for civil rights. The film sliced off a decadent $222 million against its $25 million budget, and scored multiple Oscar nominations including Best Picture, Best Actress (Davis) and two nods for Best Supporting Actress for Chastain and Spencer, with the latter actress taking home the statue. However, the film left a bad taste in some critics' mouths, who called out "white savior" tropes and the film's playbook "awards bait" scripting. Bad Dads Film Review

The premise (simple, but the film isn't): A privileged but messy NYC teenager, Lisa (Anna Paquin), causes a moment of distraction that leads to a bus hitting and killing a woman (Allison Janney). In the immediate aftermath she lies to the police—claiming the light was green—helping the driver (Mark Ruffalo) avoid consequences. The rest of the film is Lisa spiralling through guilt, grief, anger, and a need to “make it right,” while the city and everyone around her keep moving. What we talked about:Peak New York energy: classrooms full of political debate, constant noise, constant arguing, constant opinion. It feels like a movie made by New York about New York. The accident scene is brutal and effective: the sound design, the “oh God she's under the bus—no she isn't” reveal, the shock of the detached leg detail.Lisa as a catalyst/chaos engine: she's manipulative early (cheating, playing people), then becomes obsessive—fixated on getting the driver off the road.Adults failing her, repeatedly:Her mum is emotionally absent (Broadway ambitions, new relationship), and the mother–daughter conflict goes nuclear (including a shocking insult). The system shrugs: the driver is exonerated, and later the legal route becomes a cold negotiation rather than “justice.”The legal thread: the case can only move via next-of-kin dynamics; settlement money becomes the lever; but discipline for Ruffalo's driver is off the table because it implies guilt.Matt Damon “week” irony: Damon is barely in it—yet appears in the trailer—making the pick feel like a forced “hipster” choice. The uncomfortable Damon subplot: a teacher boundary-crossing storyline that lands badly and makes the film feel grimier, not deeper.Performances / cast notes: Big ensemble, lots of “oh wow, they're in this” energy: Paquin carries it; Ruffalo is an outright asshole; Allison Janney's presence is seismic even with limited time; plus Jean Reno, Matthew Broderick, and more orbiting the core. Pacing / vibe: Overlong, heavy, and (for us) pretentious rather than profound—with the most compelling parts being the accident's immediacy and the moral rot that follows. Theatrical cut runs about 149 minutes, with a longer 186-minute extended cut also out there. Verdict from us: Lukewarm-to-negative recommend. Strong craft and acting in places, but frustratingly long, emotionally abrasive, and not remotely worth it as a “Matt Damon week” entry. You can now text us anonymously to leave feedback, suggest future content or simply hurl abuse at us. Tonight on On Trial, Mark Radulich and Jesse Starcher put two divorces in the dock: Danny DeVito's The War of the Roses (1989) vs. Jay Roach's pseudo-remake The Roses (2025). DeVito's film—adapted from Warren Adler's 1981 novel, scripted by Michael J. Leeson and produced by James L. Brooks and Arnon Milchan—reunites Romancing the Stone stars Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner, with DeVito as the couple's lawyer. A pitch-black farce of marital escalation, it cost about $26M and grossed about $160M worldwide. Roach and writer Tony McNamara retool the premise for modern resentment: Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman, plus Allison Janney, Kate McKinnon, Andy Samberg, and Ncuti Gatwa, as careers invert and the gloves come off. Released Aug. 29, 2025, it opened around $6.3M domestically and has earned about $15.3M in the U.S./Canada on an estimated $35M budget. We're back from the Labor Day holiday and ready to take on the fall movie season here at Breakfast All Day. But first, we're playing a little catch-up with some end-of-summer movies you should know about. First, it's "Caught Stealing," the latest from Darren Aronofsky ("Black Swan," "Requiem for a Dream," "mother!") and perhaps his most accessible film yet. Austin Butler stars as a bartender who gets caught up in in a criminal scheme in late-'90s New York. It's a lark with a dark heart. Zoë Kravitz, Matt Smith, Vincent D'Onofrio and Liev Schreiber co-star. In theaters. Next up is another star-studded movie, "The Roses." You may remember this when it came out in 1989 and was called "The War of the Roses" starring Kathleen Turner and Michael Douglas. This time, Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch play a wealthy and successful couple whose marriage is about to collapse under the weight of their ambition and resentment. Andy Samberg, Kate McKinnon and Allison Janney co-star. In theaters. Finally, you should definitely check out "Lurker," an indie thriller that expertly explores modern celebrity. Alex Russell ("The Bear," "Beef") makes his writing-directing debut with this story of an up-and-coming pop star (Archie Madekwe) and the canny fan (Théodore Pellerin) who insinuates himself into his inner circle. Lots of twists and deeply uncomfortable moments. In theaters. Save up to 30% on select skillets and dual-handle items all September long with Lodge Cast Iron! EVERYTHING'S GOING TO BE GREAT in Theaters now!Director Jon S BairdWriter Steven RogersThe Smart family's life takes a dramatic turn when tragedy forces them to confront their oversized dreams, struggles with identity and chaotic regional theater life. As theater manager parents (Allison Janney and Bryan Cranston) work to support their two sons — a hunky football star (Jack Champion) and his flamboyant, theater-loving younger brother (Benjamin Evan Ainsworth) — unexpected circumstances compel them to move in with Janney's estranged brother (Chris Cooper). What begins as a temporary arrangement soon unravels years of familial tension, prompting each member to reevaluate their place in the world and in their relationships.Director Jon S. Baird orchestrates this warmly observant comedy-drama with a perfect balance of sharp humor and poignant family dynamics. The powerhouse cast delivers nuanced performances, with Janney and Cranston demonstrating once again why they are among the most versatile actors working today. Their chemistry grounds the film's journey through artistic ambition and life's unexpected detours, while Cooper adds layers of complexity as the long-estranged brother. Beyond its headline-grabbing ensemble, the film's tender exploration of how families navigate change and disappointment resonates with authenticity as these deeply human characters stumble toward reconciliation and renewal in this stirring celebration of life's messy beauty.—Jarod NeeceDirector Jon S. Editors - Catherine Haight ACE, Laura Zempel ACE and Isaac Hagy ACE SIRENS editors Cate, Laura and Isaac have crafted a television experience that intrigues and entertains the audience, while also challenging them on conventional gender biases. Their work on SIRENS was not just professionally unifying but creatively fulfilling as well. The team established a ritual of analyzing scenes together each week, discussing tone, performance, and overarching storyline elements. This collaborative approach allowed them to align their unique editing styles into a cohesive representation of the series' narrative.  One of the remarkable aspects of SIRENS is its tonal balance—oscillating between humor, mystery, and drama. The show's collaborative ethos even extended beyond the main editing trio. They leaned on the talents of assistant editors like Jen Bryson, who ultimately co-edited Episode 5 with Laura. Based on her play, Elemeno Pea, Molly Smith Metzler's Sirens tells the story of two estranged sisters from Buffalo, Devon and Simon.  While Devon is back in Buffalo, caring for their father who suffers from early on-set dementia, Simone is living in the idyllic seaside town Port Haven, working as a personal assistant for a wealthy socialite named Michaela.  When Devon travels to Port Haven to bring Simone back to Buffalo to help care for their father, she finds a resistant sister who seems to be under some kind of mind control from her employer.  When Devon refuses to leave without Simone, the mystery of Michaela unravels in a blend of drama and dark comedy.
