Without Your Head Horror Podcast with Kirsten Carthew director of Fantasia Fest favorite POLARIS The All-Female Led, Sophomore Feature From Celebrated Canadian Writer/Director KC Carthew premiered as Opening Night Film of the Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal, Quebec Set in 2144 against the harsh backdrop of a frozen wasteland, Sumi, a human child raised by Mama Polar Bear, narrowly escapes capture from a brutal Morad hunting party and sets out across the vast winter landscape. When Sumi stumbles across Frozen Girl, an unlikely friendship is forged and together they race ahead of the vindictive hunters towards the only guiding light Sumi knows, the Polaris star. A winter-set, post-apocalyptic fantasy fable set in the year 2144, POLARIS takes place in an unspecified part of the world reeling from the consequences of ecological fallout, uniquely conceived in a wholly new language and presented without subtitles. The all-female cast is impressively led by 13-year-old — who was only 11 at the time of filming — Korean-Canadian actress Viva Lee (Syfy's Deadly Class) alongside Khamisa Wilsher (Netflix's The Hollow, CW's Charmed) and veteran stage, television, and film actress Muriel Dutil (Curling, Ressac). Expanded from her award-winning short film FISH OUT OF WATER, which premiered at Fantasia in 2015, Carthew has set the stage with a magical world inspired by Greek mythology with themes incited by the urgency of the current environmental crisis and built upon the activist movement and ideology of ecofeminism. Recognized for spectacular world-building in her visual storytelling, POLARIS is Carthew's second feature following her celebrated debut THE SUN AT MIDNIGHT, which starred Kawannáhere Devery Jacobs (Reservation Dogs, Blood Quantum). --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/withoutyourhead/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/withoutyourhead/support

The film is a blood-splattered feature in a parallel Taiwan where an unknown virus has taken hold of society where there is no quarter from violence and destruction. Fantasia Film Festival 2021: Brain Freeze

Movie Trailer Reviews

Long time zombie fans will tell you that using zombie outbreaks as a jumping off point for socio-political commentary is a genre staple. At least the one willing to admit George A Romero never made a single zombie film in a vacuum will. Although recent zombiefare tends to be less overt, blending comedy into an apocalyptic happenings is definitely a trend on the rise...again. Brain Freeze, 25th Fantasia Fest's opening night film, offered audiences just such a broad satire.  Set in Quebec, Brain Freeze leans into the zombie outbreak in an isolated community trope for it's central crisis. But unlike in many outbreak scenarios, this story isn't a globe-trotting race for a cure or to isolate patient zero. Instead, director and co-writer Julien Knafo uses this outbreak to take broad swipes at a range of issues like, polluting, xenophobia, classism, poor crisis management by governments, and misinformation campaigns.    It's the middle of winter on Peacock Island and the owners of the local country club see a moneymaking opportunity in being able to offer its affluent members the ability to play golf year round. Naturally, there's a company with a brand new fertilizer designed to grow grass in even the most challenging of conditions. Of course, this experimental chemical got into the water supply. Soon the island community's inhabitants are a bizarre new breed of zombie.  Brain Freeze centers to unlikely zombie apocalypse companions. André (Iani Bédard), the often too on-the-nose embodiment of a disaffected youth, and Dan (Roy Dupuis) a doomsday-prepping security guard.  The dynamic between the too make space for some low-key witty moments with a subtext juxtaposing the different ways neither is exactly the optimal traveling companion in a city overrun with zombies.  André's self-involved obliviousness is both a boon and a curse. While Dan's anti-establishment tendencies cause him to vital clues and dismiss André out of hand. And here's were the story hits its stride because the journey is fraught yet full of out of pocket humor.  In the midst of all this push and pull lies an unexpectedly fun romp as this strange duo attempt to avoid zombification while searching to clues to share with the outside world in hopes of a cure. But beyond the humor and ideologies battling it out in the subtext, Brain Freeze lacks cohesion. Knafo and co-writer Jean Barbe include too many topics to this a social satire. There's an actually sinister storyline lurking just beneath the camp that's repeatedly underserved. So, while the cast give engaging performances and the film balances the ridiculous rather well; ultimately it underwhelms.   Come for the creepy, stay to find out what happens to that damn baby...  Listen as Kris and I discuss the humorous highs and lows of Brain Freeze as well as the dangers of having too many moving targets when it comes to blending in biting social commentary.      Follow more of our Film Festival  Reviews and Coverage on our Press Page Page: https://press.mtrnetwork.net Follow us on Social Media: MTRNetwork MTRNetwork @TheMTRNetwork

Her curiosity about the world around her causes her to see everything through a literal and figurative lens that represents to identity crisis many new immigrants experiences. In her relationship with Fox, Baby sees someone who sees her for the first time, and allows her to step out side the world of fantasy she's created within her own home. Even if he may not be the best influence on her.During out conversation we discussed the various motifs and symbols representative of Chinese culture, familial relationships, love, and the roles each person played in bringing this story to life in their own unique way.Baby, Don't Cry has it's world premiere in the Underground lineup of the Fantasia International Film Festival on August 11, 2021. Pledge is a recent indie horror gem from director/writer team Daniel Robbins and Zack Weiner. It follows three hapless college kids as they attempt to pledge for a highly exclusive fraternity and are subsequently subjected to a sadistic gauntlet of unspeakably horrific hazing rituals. Pledge mixes humor and horror in a well-balanced and thoroughly engaging narrative with main characters you genuinely care about. At the same time, Pledge manages to effortlessly delve into themes of elitism and the culture of bullying in a way that's relevant without being heavy-handed. Prior to Pledge, Zack and Daniel made Uncaged, a teen werewolf horror thriller from 2016. Zack and Daniel were friends in high school and went on to make low-budget horror movies together, right here in my hometown of New York. They've been enjoying a great amount of success lately, as Pledge was recently acquired at Fantasia Fest by IFC Midnight and is on its way to Hulu. In addition to being a downright great time of a movie, Pledge is a prime example of an intelligently produced, lean and mean indie horror masterpiece that looks and feels way more expensive than it actually is. It also introduces a particularly strong horror mythology that is ripe with possibilities for sequels (I'd personally love to see Pledge unfold into a franchise). We sat down with Daniel Robinson (director), Zack Weiner (writer and actor), and Zach Byrd (one of the main actors) from Pledge, and explored the key lessons of indie horror filmmaking that they learned while making Pledge. Here are key insights from the guys of Pledge: It's all about the DP, baby. By DP, I obviously mean Director of Photography, you perverts. Your DP is the person who can make your low-budget movie look way more expensive. Have you ever started watching a super low-budget movie, and because of the low production value you find yourself completely checking out of it? It happens to me all the time, and I feel snobby saying it, but it's a real thing that you can't help. Because in order to psychologically believe a movie, it has to have a level of quality that translates to believability. This is critically important when making your first few films. The low-budget look can be a kiss of death for first-time film makers. It's critically important to make your movies have the highest production value possible. So take the time needed to find yourself an incredible Director of Photography, because they are the one who is going to show you how to make the movie you want to make. Daniel and Zack also mentioned the benefit of working with a DP who has a gaffer background, because they understand lighting really well. Turn your cast and crew into a brain trust. If there's a technical challenge on set, a flaw in the script, or any kind of hiccup during production, toss the challenge out to your cast and crew to help solve. When filming, you have dozens of creative people all around you, and chances are, someone on your set has dealt with the same issue before or will approach the problem from a different perspective than you do. Your job as the director isn't necessarily to have all the answers, instead your job is to find all the answers. Your cast and your crew can be your best problem solvers and collaborators. Not to utilize them is a wasted opportunity. Create a director checklist. Dan has a whole list of specific pieces of advice and insight from other directors. For every movie he works on, Dan picks five specific insights that he turns into a checklist. Then he checks it off every day of filming to make sure he is maximizing his opportunity as a director. Dan also took a cue from what Coppola did on The Godfather and wrote out the potential pitfalls for each scene to make sure they all worked as well as possible. If you're reading this, you probably read director interviews and watch feature length commentaries, so start your own list. EVERNOTE is a great place to start. Wouldn't you want to walk on set with a checklist of advice from people like Coppola, Scorsese, and Tarantino? Make your list, and keep it with you when you shoot, or even write.
