Escuchar audio

“The person who really loves me will be the one who helps me die. That's love, Rosa. That's love.”Filmmaker Miguel Ángel Ferrer joins Andy Nelson and Pete Wright to talk about Alejandro Amenábar's The Sea Inside, a film that shaped how Miguel thinks about life, death, and the power of cinema.Miguel—director of The Shadow of the Sun, a moving new film about two estranged brothers chasing an impossible dream—shares the personal story of discovering The Sea Inside in an almost-empty theater, and why it remains unforgettable.“This man, through wanting to die, shows everybody around him how to truly live. You can't know the beauty of what you have if you don't know the finite nature that it has.”From survival and dignity to filmmaking as perseverance, Miguel reflects on stories that inspire, challenge, and remind us not to take life for granted.

It's my last on air show with Marielena Ferrer! We started this monthly conversation about Spirituality and Politics, the art of living and the art of living together, nearly 5 years ago in April 2021. It's been a wonderful and expansive exploration of subjects that are near and dear to my heart and my sense of curiosity. We chose to end our run with a conversation about Miracles. We'd given ourselves homework to explore A Course in Miracles, but I had a hard time digesting it, even Marianne Williamson's interpretation of it. But that didn't stop us for working through some of the meaning of the text and overall, what miracles are and how they relate to the art of living.Related to the conversation is the concept of Love which you might say is the art of living together. Perhaps from a scientific perspective, it is the glue that holds us together. We'll be continuing our conversation at Unison Arts beginning on March 6, 2026 and in the podcast once my radio show sunsets. Newsletter: https://ecosistemaecommerce.com/newsletter/Web: https://ecosistemaecommerce.com/Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/javierlopezrod/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/people/Ecosistema-Ecommerce/61550625909016/Twitter: https://twitter.com/ecosistemaecommTik Tok: https://www.tiktok.com/@ecosistemaecommerceInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/ecosistemaecommerce/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCE2zroaDzTVZRwNOh5Ma9cg

Director and filmmaker Miguel Angel Ferrer did something truly remarkable and breathtaking in his film, THE SHADOW OF THE SUN (2023). Not simply that it's Venezuela's entry into the Oscars or he shot the film in his home country of Venezuela, although that's fantastic in its own right. When you hear the story of how the film came to be, through the radiant cinematography or the work of a 65 year old cameraman, you get an understanding of what a passion project this was for him. You understand why he imbued every single character in this film with their own backstory and meaty roles. I felt like I could understand every person in this film because of the care he gave them, and that's rare indeed.Venezuela is in the news for things other than filmmaking, but that doesn't have to be the case. Let's appreciate the true artistry of filmmakers like Miguel. In this episode, Miguel and I discuss:the radiance of the film and how it shows people what life is like in Venezuela;how the global news stories about Venezuela turned a spotlight on the country and its filmmakers;film school in Miami and how the city should be viewed in indie film;how his 11+ shorts led into this remarkable feature film;taking jobs you might not expect as a hidden strength;how he manages two companies -- Magic Films and Multi Movie Studios;what he's looking for in a director;how somebody should feel watching THE SHADOW OF THE SUN;why he imbued so much life into each of his characters in his film and why that's so rare;his commitment to shooting the film in Venezuela and what advice he'd give others on the process;his powerful answer about inspiring future Venezuelan filmmakers;how he got the nomination for Venezuela's entry to the Oscars;what's next for him, including a remake!Miguel's Indie Film Highlights: Jeff Nichols; THE SEA INSIDE (2004) dir. by Alejandro Amenábar; J.A. BayonaMemorable Quotes:"What's been happening lately obviously puts a spotlight on Venezuela, a gigantic spotlight on Venezuela, and people start doing the research and start asking the right questions, they find a lot of truth that they didn't know about.""As a filmmaker, you have to grab...the cards that life gives you and play them as best as you can.""Everybody wants like instant gratification and everybody wants the David Fincher career, the Nolan career. Whereas Nolan never had to do a commercial or a music video.""I want them to see themselves in these characters.""Having done verticals and having done a movie for a studio very rare nowadays does a movie get made that is not by committee meaning you have to adhere to something that the studio needs to be done or that the producer, the production company, needs to get done.""This one was one that when I got the kernel of the idea, it pulled me. I couldn't stop thinking about it. It pulled me and it pulled me, and I couldn't let it go until it was done on the page.""That's what we wanted to capture in the film, the Venezuelan spirit.""The moral of the story there is, listen to your girlfriend and to your mom."Links:Follow Miguel On InstagramMiguel Ferrer's WebsiteSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/first-time-go/exclusive-content

In this episode, I sit with a question that's been quietly shaping a lot of my clinical work and personal reflection: What kind of masculinity are we actually bringing into our relationships?Inspired by a provocative appendix from Jorge Ferrer's Love and Freedom, I explore his contrast between the “Alpha Male” and the “Omega Man”—not as fixed identities or ideals, but as relational patterns that shape how men experience confidence, desire, power, and intimacy.Rather than critiquing Ferrer, I use his framework as a doorway into something more personal and clinical: how masculinity often becomes organized around performance, hierarchy, and validation—and what begins to shift when it moves toward presence, self-trust, and relational safety.Along the way, I reflect on:Why gender language always risks essentialism—and how to hold it lightlyHow these dynamics show up quietly in the therapy roomWhy gentleness, empathy, aesthetics, and emotional attunement are still coded as “unmanly”How sexuality changes when it's no longer treated as a referendum on worthAnd why masculinity doesn't need to be defended through hardness in order to remain potentThis isn't an episode about becoming a “better man,” or replacing one masculine ideal with another. It's an invitation to get curious about what allows relationships—and desire—to breathe. If you've ever felt alienated by hyper-masculine bravado or flattened versions of “healthy masculinity,” this conversation is for you.

For our second to last Spirituality and Politics on Radio Kingston, Marielena and I are joined by returning guest, Eliza Swann - writer, educator, artist and alchemist, to continue our conversation into The Emerald Tablet.Last month on the show, we focused on the first paragraph of the Tablet. Today, we revisit it with Eliza, who shares their depth of knowledge and experience in working with the text. Eliza then carries us into the second paragraph with a strong analogy that helps to make sense of this somewhat esoteric text, the bridge between the ineffable and the mundane."True, without falsehood, certain and most true, that which is above is as that which is below, and that which is below is as that which is above, for the performance of the miracles of the One Thing. And as all things are from One, by the mediation of One, so all things have their birth from this One Thing by adaptation. The Sun is its father, the Moon its mother, and the Wind carries it in its belly, its nurse is the Earth. This is the father of all perfection, or consummation of the whole world. Its power is integrating, if it be turned into earth.Thou shalt separate the earth from the fire, the subtle from the gross, suavely, and with great ingenuity. It ascends from earth to heaven and descends again to earth, and receives the power of the superiors and of the inferiors. So thou hast the glory of the whole world; therefore let all obscurity flee before thee. This is the strong force of all forces, overcoming every subtle and penetrating every solid thing. So the world was created. Hence were all wonderful adaptations, of which this is the manner. Therefore am I called Hermes Trismegistus, having the three parts of the philosophy of the whole world. What I have to tell is completed, concerning the Operation of the Sun."Tune in to our last on air Spirituality and Politics conversation on January 12th as we welcome in a new year and new beginnings.
