We meet bestselling writer Shon Faye to discuss her new book Love In Exile and artists she admires: Nan Goldin, The Bloomsbury Group, Bernini, Michelangelo, Pedro Almodóvar's Bad Education and performers including Tom Rasmussen, Madonna and David Hoyle.Shon Faye grew up quietly obsessed with the feeling that love was not for her. Not just romantic love: the secret fear of her own unworthiness penetrated every aspect and corner of her life. It was a fear that would erupt in destructive, counterfeit versions of the real love she craved: addictions and short-lived romances that were either euphoric and fantastical, or excruciatingly painful and unhinged, often both. Faye's experience of the world as a trans woman, who grew up visibly queer, exacerbated her fears. But, as she confronted her damaging ideas about love and lovelessness, she came to realize that this sense of exclusion is symptomatic of a much larger problem in our culture.Love, she argues, is as much a collective question as a personal one. Yet our collective ideals of love have developed in a society which is itself profoundly sick and loveless; in which consumer capitalism sells us ever new, engrossing fantasies of becoming more loved or lovable. In this highly politicized terrain, boundaries are purposefully drawn to keep some in and to keep others out. Those who exist outside them are ignored, denigrated, exiled. In Love in Exile, Shon Faye shows love is much greater than the narrow ideals we have been taught to crave so desperately that we are willing to bend and break ourselves to fit them. Wise, funny, unsparing, and suffused with a radical clarity, this is a book of and for our times: for seeing and knowing love, in whatever form it takes, is the meaning of life itself.Shon Faye is author of the acclaimed bestseller The Transgender Issue. Her work has been published in, among others, the Guardian, Independent, British Vogue and VICE. Born in Bristol, she now lives in London. As Frieze magazine recently wrote: Shon Faye is one of the most celebrated non-fiction authors in the UK, rising to fame for her discerning prose on culture, relationships and class. Her first book, The Transgender Issue (2021), a provocative treatise on gender identity debates in the UK, was part of her rise to fame. Not only did Faye offer a detailed survey of queer history, but she also indicated why trans-liberation is connected to liberation for all. Her new book of essays, Love in Exile (2025), explores the existential and social challenges of courtship and heartache. Rather than focus solely on the discrimination that many transgender people face, however, the text is a literary memoir that interrogates how ancient and present-day writers conceptualize and dissect love. As a Vogue contributor with her advice column ‘Dear Shon' (2022–ongoing), host of the podcast Call Me Mother (2021–ongoing) and author of Dazed & Confused Magazine's ‘Future of Sex' series (2022–ongoing), she addresses the topic of romance with honesty and poise.Follow @Shon.Faye on InstagramBuy Love in Exile, published by Pengiun. You can also follow @TalkArt for images of all artworks discussed in today's episode. Editor - Louise Ford, ACE NOSFERATU editor Louise Ford, ACE and writer/director Robert Eggers have reunited once again to take on the not-so-simple task of remaking FW Murnau's horror classic. Considering "Lou's" disdain for cover songs, it was important that this film could stand on its own merits and add something new to the world of cinema. And although she has a few supernatural/horror films to her credit, "Lou" insists she doesn't seek them out. She's just looking for great stories to tell. With NOSFERATU, she told one. NOSFERATU - In the 1830s, estate agent Thomas Hutter travels to Transylvania for a fateful meeting with Count Orlok, a prospective client. In his absence, Hutter's new bride, Ellen, is left under the care of their friends, Friedrich and Anna Harding. Plagued by horrific visions and an increasing sense of dread, Ellen soon encounters an evil force that's far beyond her control. Louise Ford, ACE NOSFERATU is the fourth feature film Lou has edited for Robert Eggers since their first collaboration in 2008 on his short film, The Tell-Tale Heart . She edited Eggers' The Witch , The Lighthouse , and The Northman . Other films she has edited include Don't Breathe , Wildlife , and three films with the director Cory Finley - Thoroughbreds , Bad Education , and Landscape with Invisible Hand . Michael and David speak of many things ... part of the reason they always seem to have so much fun. Among other things Michael speaks of how he manages to invite "the muses" and keeps his art both open and discreet at the same time. He also speaks of his work as musical composer for the brand new Disney series, Star Wars: The Acolyte. I always have speaking with Michael: our times always feel rich and multi-dimensional.2023 Pulitzer Prize-winning and Emmy- and Grammy-nominated composer Michael Abels is best known for his genre-defying scores for the Jordan Peele films GET OUT, US and NOPE. The score for US won a World Soundtrack Award, the Jerry Goldsmith Award, a Critics Choice nomination, multiple critics awards, and was named “Score of the Decade” by The Wrap. Both US and NOPE were shortlisted for the Oscar for Best Original Score. In 2022, Abels' music was honored by the Vancouver International Film Festival, the Middleburg Film Festival, and the Museum of the Moving Image. NOPE was awarded Best Score for a Studio Film by the Society of Composers & Lyricists. Other recent projects include the films BAD EDUCATION, NIGHTBOOKS, and the docu-series ALLEN v. FARROW. Current releases include CHEVALIER (Toronto Intl Film Festival) and LANDSCAPE WITH INVISIBLE HAND (Sundance 2022), his second collaboration with director Cory Finley. Upcoming projects include THE BURIAL (Amazon), and a series for Disney Plus.Abels' creative output also includes many concert works, including the choral song cycle AT WAR WITH OURSELVES for the Kronos Quartet, the Grammy-nominated ISOLATION VARIATION for Hilary Hahn, and OMAR, an opera co-composed with Grammy-winning recording artist Rhiannon Giddens. The New York Times named OMAR one of the 10 Best Classical Performances of 2022 and said, “What Giddens and Abels created is an ideal of American sound, an inheritor of the Gershwins' “Porgy and Bess” but more honest to its subject matter, conjuring folk music, spirituals, Islamic prayer and more, woven together with a compelling true story that transcends documentary.”Abels other concert works have been performed by the New York Philharmonic, the Chicago Symphony, the Los Angeles Master Chorale and many others. Some of these pieces are available on the Cedille label, including DELIGHTS & DANCES, GLOBAL WARMING and WINGED CREATURES. Recent commissions include EMERGE for the National Symphony and Detroit Symphony, and a guitar concerto BORDERS for Grammy-nominated artist Mak Grgic.Abels is co-founder of the Composers Diversity Collective, an advocacy group to increase visibility of composers of color in film, gaming and streaming media.https://michaelabels.com/

Editor - Peter H. Oliver BABY REINDEER editor Peter Oliver had just one word to describe Richard Gadd's script when he first read it. That word was "wow"! Viewers of the hit Netflix series can certainly relate to that reaction as the show has resonated with audiences for its ability to delicately blend humor and pathos. Created by and starring Richard Gadd, BABY REINDEER is adapted from Gadd's autobiographical one-man show. It tells the story of aspiring comedian Donny Dunn, who works as a bartender in a London pub. One fateful day, Donny offers a cup of tea to a customer, Martha, to cheer her up. Martha develops a strong attachment to Donny and starts coming to the bar every day. Her fascination and attraction to Donny rapidly descends into Martha harassing Donny online and in person. PETER H. OLIVER Prior to his work on BABY REINDEER, Peter Oliver's editing talents were on display in series such as THE BILL (2005-09), BAD EDUCATION (2013), RED DWARF (2016-17), and GOLDIE'S OLDIES (2021). Peter's work can next be seen in the upcoming Netflix series, ERIC (2024) starring Benedict Cumberbatch. This Episode we discuss the 2012 series Bad Education, written by and staring Jack Whitehall. The show finds itself landing dangerously close to the likes of "The Inbetweeners" and another show staring Jack Whitehall, "Fresh Meat", and its fair to say the comparisons do not do this show any favours. The fact this show managed three seasons and a movie is a surprise only surpassed in magnitude by its recent relaunch, maybe we've missed something here? Safe to say it wasn't exactly our cup of tea but as always we had fun discussing it.
Pirate Cove: An Insider's Account of the Infamous Southport Lane Scandal by Richard D. Bailey https://amzn.to/3w8C4U0 In Pirate Cove, Richard D. Bailey provides an insider's chronicle of a white-collar crime whose headline-grabbing elements first appeared on the front pages of The Wall Street Journal. It's the true, unvarnished, complete, previously untold, and fascinating story of how one honest man helped unravel the massive Southport Lane fraud perpetrated by the author's former employer, 26-year-old, self-proclaimed financial prodigy Alexander Chatfield Burns. A really smart friend of the author once asked Burns how he got control of four state-regulated insurance companies. With a Cheshire cat grin, Burns cryptically responded, “Jesus with a telescope on Mars couldn't figure out how I did this.” But the author eventually did. If (and when) Pirate Cove is made into a movie, it'll stand right alongside such successful dramedies as American Hustle, Can You Ever Forgive Me, Bad Education, White Collar Crime, The Wolf of Wall Street, and Michael Clayton. Richard D. Bailey is the author of Pirate Cove, released by Bancroft Press in November 2023. For over 30 years, he has been providing interim and long-term management, and corporate development services to distressed public and private manufacturing, service, and distribution companies. In 2013, Bailey was hired by Southport Lane Management (“Southport”), a New York-based private equity firm. Shortly after he was hired, he noticed unusual cash transfers by and between multiple Southport-owned and -controlled LLC's. Upon further investigation, Mr. Bailey uncovered critical evidence of what would turn out to be a $350 million fraud. He then worked closely with FBI investigators for several years. This resulted in four indictments and four guilty pleas. Three of the perpetrators served prison time. In late October 2021, Alexander Chatfield Burns, the leader of the fraud, committed suicide prior to being sentenced. As a result, with millions unaccounted for, in the eyes of the law he died an innocent man. His book, Pirate Cove is the true story of a fake Caravaggio, a bogus Yale degree, a 26 year old self-proclaimed genius, and the unraveling of a $350 million fraud. He holds a BA from Providence College and an MA from Fairfield University.

Erik Childress and Steve Prokopy dig into eight new movies this week. They include revisiting a film from Sundance that they still believe to be the best horror film of the year (Birth/Rebirth). An Irish paramilitary seeks revenge for his wife (Dead Shot), an old Chinese tale gets the animated treatment from Netflix (The Monkey King) and Michael Cera stars in a dysfunctional family drama that the film's publicist apparently did not want us to see. One of the stars of Glow gets to go all Shining at the hotel she inherits (Bad Things) and the director of Thoroughbreds and Bad Education tries out a capitalist satire with aliens (Landscape With Invisible Hand). Finally, DC comics tries again (Blue Beetle) and talking dogs with the voices of Will Ferrell and Jamie Foxx pee, poop and hump their way into laughs (Strays). 0:00 - Intro 3:52 - Birth/Rebirth 17:36 - Dead Shot 25:06 - The Adults 35:36 – The Monkey King 41:26 - Bad Things 52:17 - Landscape With Invisible Hand 1:03:01 - Blue Beetle 1:18:14 – Strays 1:29:40 - Outro

Allen, together with a bunch of investigative journalists, were eventually able to unmask the world's largest ever diploma scam. But was that the end of Axact's activities?
