Michelle Harrison has portrayed Nora Allen on The Flash for all of its nine seasons. Being Nora Allen is a big responsibility: Nora's untimely death in the pilot is the event that sets everything in motion. Nora is seen in multiple timelines, as the embodiment of the Speed Force, and as the ultimate representation of motherhood, love, and sacrifice – and the woman who portrays her contains just as many multitudes. Michelle's lengthy list of credits includes inventive sci-fi like Continuum and The Magicians and Eureka, crime procedurals like Take Two, family dramas like When Calls the Heart, seasonal fare like The Christmas House and The Christmas House 2: Deck Those Halls, and thrilling works that defy genre, like Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein's critically acclaimed feature, Freaks. Soon she'll be seen acting opposite her Flash colleague Jesse L. Martin in Re: Uniting, the highly anticipated feature film directorial debut from Laura Adkin. One year ago this week, COVID-19 shut down the Vancouver film and television industry. On March 12, 2020, The CW suspended production on Riverdale when a crew member was reported to have been exposed to COVID; by March 15, cameras had stopped rolling on every single production in the province. By summer, the cameras were rolling again, but production looked and felt more than a little different. Gone were buffet lunches and a free-for-all at craft services. Daily temperature checks were expected, as were regular COVID testing and PPE. COVID seemed to touch every aspect of production, from how scenes were written to auditioning to waste management. And yet, cameras rolled – but at what cost? In this special episode of the YVR Screen Scene Podcast, Sabrina speaks to Zach Lipovsky, film and television director and caucus representative with the British Columbia Branch of the Directors Guild of Canada, actress Sharon Taylor, and Zena Harris, founder of Green Spark Group, about the ways that COVID-19 has transformed the Vancouver film and television industry. Andy Hodgson is a cinematographer-producer who made his directorial debut in 2020 with El Color Negro, a short film that explores the concept of the colour black. Is it a colour? An idea? What does Blackness mean in this historic moment? Andy drew inspiration for El Color Negro from his experiences as a Black man in a country that was built on a foundation of white supremacy, as well as the experiences of Black people through history. These were topics that Andy addressed in a June 2020 panel presented by VAFF entitled Amplifying Black Voices. Andy joined Rukiya Bernard, Mariam Barry, Jem Garrard, and Zach Lipovsky in discussing racism and white supremacy in the Vancouver film and television industry, and specifically how it impacts Black artists (that panel was hosted by Sabrina Furminger and can be found in the YVR Screen Scene podcast feed). In this thought-provoking and fascinating episode, Andy reflects on his childhood growing up in the midst of a turbulent civil war, his move to Vancouver and his discovery of cinematography and producing, and the mix of politics, art, and social justice issues that drive him forward in his work. In tonight's edition of our DINNER & A MOVIE of FRIDAY FAMILY FILM NIGHT - the Mister and I review FREAKS (2018), currently streaming on Netflix. Writers and directors Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, tell the story of a lonely little girl who pines for a normal life with loving family, while trapped in a dilapidated house with her overprotective and super paranoid father who claims he's doing these things to protect her. Lexy Kolker gives a magnificent performance as 7 year old Chloe and we predict, one to watch in the coming years. Emile Hirsch, Bruce Dern, Amanda Crew and Grace Park round out the main characters in the film. Please note there are SPOILERS in this review. For a film in a more horror vein, check out 1932's FREAKS by Tod Browning now streaming on Hulu. Shout out to Tony M for recommending this movie. Tonight's spectacular dinner was courtesy a recipe of Uncle Leo's - veggie pasta which includes sautéed onions, broccoli, quartered artichoke hearts, black olives, quartered tomatoes with onion powder, salt, pepper, Italian seasoning over tricolor pasta. The Nick Taylor Horror Show

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 26, 2019 69:34

As always each episode of The Nick Taylor Horror Show explores and deconstructs the success strategies of established horror directors while summarizing the key insights and resources that you can use on your own horror filmmaking journey. Today we have directorial duo Adam Stein, Zach Lipovsky. Freaks is, not necessarily a horror movie, but it did deliver a very decent amount of blood (which may make it ‘horror adjacent'). Regardless, this was a fascinating movie that, on one hand was an independent character study, but on the other hand, delved deep into superhero level mythos - it was fascinating to see how Adam & Zach were able to play with such outlandish subject matter on such a small budget.  That and the movie is loaded with very compelling performances, with Bruce Dern and Emile Hirsch, and overall it was one of the most surprising movies of the year. This was Adam and Zach's first feature and we talk at length about how they were able to get it off the ground, how they got Bruce Dern involved, and how they were able to do so much with so little - all of that and so much more on the Nick Taylor Horror Show.  Here as always are key takeaways from this conversation with Adam Stein, Zach Lipovsky, the directors of Freaks.    Make your Casting Director your first hire. When Zach and Adam began to raise funds for the movie, the first investment they made was in a casting director. Why? Well first of all, they knew that in order for their movie to work, they needed great actors who could pull off the deeply emotional characters, and a casting director would be able to pitch the movie to stars. As we all know, big actors are a cache that can attract more funding which is what makes this such a critical first step. Casting Directors also have access to studios as well which can also help with funding. Find a casting director early, and invest in them.    When it comes to the script, correct course as you go. After writing the screenplay, Zach and Adam were constantly rewriting it, even on set as they were shooting.  They stated that if some piece of dialogue felt like it didn't work they had the presence of mind to try out different improvisational exercises to find dialogue that suited the scene better. In other words they were not so bound to the script as to treat it like it was the bible. This really is a testament to being as present as possible on set and adapting your material to the present moment. Zach and Adam had the flexibility and wherewithal to adapt the script to the moment and it suited the actors and the movie which had a very naturalistic feel to it. Doing this requires keeping everyone completely aligned and on the same page to ensure that everyone is making the same movie.   Be a curator, not an auteur. A number of directors who have been on the show including Mick Garris, Dan Robbins, and Mitzi Peirone have spoken at length about how damaging auteur theory can be to a movie. For those who don't know, auteur theory is the belief that any and every single decision made on a movie has to come from the director. This is a limitation. Zach and Adam recommend being open to getting ideas from your entire crew and being the curator of those ideas, by picking and choosing the ones you think work best. Your job as a director is not to have the greatest ideas but to find the greatest ideas. Directing is a highly collaborative art, to not be open to the ideas that could come from the talented people around you is a wasted opportunity, particularly since they can make your movie better.   ----- Produced by Simpler Media

With no hint of story direction, he dropped Freaks on Ro and Kriss. Writer/Director duo Adam Stein and Zach Lipovsky's feature film debut creates a universe that feels like it needs far, far more movies. Shortly into the film, the story feels like a "family on the run" story with a Father and daughter attempting to hide in plain sight but just as you settle in, things go sideways right before things get dark. Trust and believe there are twist and unexpected turns that take sci-fi to a refreshing place.  Listen to the crew chat and then go watch it Freaks for yourself.  Freaks is a sci-fi thriller wholly unique even as certain elements come together to represent something familiar. The chemistry between all the characters is convincing and makes every second just that much more captivating. It's so convincing Ro, Brandon, and Kriss argued over whether or not they'd just watched yet another child with serious sociopathic tendencies or if everything that happened just demonstrates why not telling people what the hell is going on will always lead to murder and mayhem (we're really here for it either way).  Like what you hear? And in true Tarantino form, this episode is 1) long (our longest "regular" episode to date) and 2) "Volume 1". In this volume we look at Tarantino the auteur. In volume II we'll look at Tarantino the provocateur. In this 8-chapter episode, we'll explore such themes as:The meta element of Tarantino's dialog as a metaphor for Tarantino himself as filmmakerHis use of music how the music is itself a "character"How, despite the fact he borrows so heavily from other classic or obscure films, he's still able to make it his ownAnd so much moreStay tuned past the credits for a special bonus segment as well.Starring...In this episode we hear from:Music video director Isaac DeitzShow regular Brandon McCormick of Whitestone Motion PicturesMovie and entertainment journalists David Griffin (of Collider TV Talk) and Clarke Wolfe (frequent Collider Movie Talk co-host)Adorama's "Through the Lens" director Sal D'aliaKevin Shahinian of Pacific PicturesFilmmaker and Thunderdome filmmaker, Jonn GabrielDirector and Shot Lister and Script Speaker creator Zach Lipovsky, andHurlbut Visuals CEO Lydia HurlbutDirector and CEO of Cut.com, Mike GastonJeff Barry, director of "Occupy, Texas" Stillmotion has a New Class - "Conducting Remarkable Interviews"Stillmotion's Muse Storytelling is the process they use to tell the kind of stories that has helped them garner five Emmys, and go from shooting weddings to shooting the Super Bowl.
