The subject matter of Episode 249 is HEAVY because it mirrors the equally heavy subject matter of Lurlene McDaniel's long career in YA “sick lit.” More specifically, Alli and her guest chat about Six Months to Live, the 1985 novel that began the Dawn Rochelle series. In it, seventh grader Dawn is diagnosed with cancer and forced to completely reorder her life accordingly. They discuss the draw of books like this for kids, the formula Lurlene McDaniel devised, tropes about grief and dying, evolution in tragic YA, representation, and more.Kelly Loy Gilbert is the author of Conviction, Picture Us in the Light, When We Were Infinite, and Everyone Wants to Know. Today we are discussing our final themes, predictions, and thoughts on Eye of the World as we move on to The Great Hunt.  Laura calls Hannah out for predicting something she had definitely read about in the second book.  We discuss things we used to read and enjoy in high school, like unabridged Les Mis and Newsies, because we are very cool.  Wait until the end where we lose it over the fact that Dune had characters like Duncan Idaho with Jessica and Paul. There are major Jane the Virgin spoilers for about 2 minutes! Also Hannah goes in-depth on What We Do in the Shadows and she likely could have cut it down by 3 minutes. Media Mentions

It's rare that Alli's met a reader who has been as deeply affected by a book as the guest on Episode 89 has been affected by Lurlene McDaniel's Don't Die, My Love. You don't want to miss this story! On this episode, Alli and her guest Hitha Palepu also talk about the power of books like McDaniel's tragic teen romances to help kids better understand and cope with crisis situations. They discuss the extent to which they emphasize with the parents in Don't Die, My Love and the many (real) things they learned about cancer from reading the novel… even as adults! Hitha is an investor, the author of How to Pack: Travel Smart for Any Trip, and the host of the 1 Smart Thing podcast. If you grew up in the 90s, chances are good you crossed paths with Lurlene McDaniel, the queen of teen lit tragedy porn. While starting from a genuinely good place, wanting to help sick kids feel seen after her young son was diagnosed with diabetes, her career mostly involved biting off waaaaaaaay more than she could chew and fitting just about every debilitating physical illness under the sun into a very pat and very Christian formula. And along the way her books grew a predominant audience of able-bodied middle school goths with a voyeuristic interest in death (trust us, we know). "The world may not be perfect and you may not be perfect, but just wait a minute and it'll change." Lurlene McDaniel is an acclaimed author, who's written over 50 novels dealing with terminal illness and matters of the heart. Lurlene started writing to cope with the grief she felt when her three-year-old son was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes. The stories have been pouring out her ever since. As a teen, I was obsessed with Lurlene’s work, so this interview was both surreal and incredible for me to record. We talk about her writing process, how the industry has changed since she started, and how—as an artist—your work must evolve as you grow and your audience ages. Lurlene, who’s now in her 70s, has tips on everything from honing your natural talent into a craft to how to stay motivated. Even if you’re not a writer, there are still gems here for everyone.
