"One of my favorite things to do when it gets hard is I ask myself the question, 'Is this the story you want to tell today?' I like that question because you can't hide from that question. You can finish a run and tell your friends, 'Oh my stomach was upset,' or, 'The weather or whatever.' But you can't lie to yourself. You know who you're choosing to be in those moments. And I like asking myself, 'Who do you want to be in those moments?' And I find that usually I want to be someone who pushes through hard stuff." Emily Halnon is no stranger to the Ali on the Run Show. She was the show's very first guest, and she returned for her seventh appearance on the show with a very special conversation recorded in front of a live audience at the 2024 Eugene Marathon race expo, one week before her debut memoir, To the Gorge, is released to the world. Just getting to the starting line of a marathon is often the hardest part. Josh Berube recently completed his first marathon, but his journey to the finish was anything but easy. After a bad ankle-roll during peak training for the 2023 Eugene Marathon, Josh was forced to take a month off running and was faced with uncertainty about whether running 26.2 miles was even going to be possible. Josh and I worked together to modify his training, keep him active and optimistic throughout the process and got him to the starting line with a solid plan, ready to execute on it. Josh ran a phenomenal race, outdoing both of our expectations. He ran 2:59 with a big negative split and earned his Boston Qualifier in his first marathon. On this week's episode of The Knighton Runs Podcast, I talk with Josh Berube, Boston Qualifier and Knighton Lion about the triumphs and tribulations of training for and racing his first marathon. "What is my why? It's just to give myself a shot. I've run six marathons. I feel like one of them went really well. And I felt the urge to try something fun and give myself a challenge and see what I'm capable of." Hello from the halfway point in my Eugene Marathon training! I'm seven weeks into my training with seven weeks to go until I line up for my seventh marathon. A few weeks ago, my coach and my sports dietitian joined me on the show to talk about what it's been like working together in this pursuit. Today, it's just me, talking about why I'm doing this. Soon after the news broke, Swimrunners from all over the world began paying tribute to their legacy and impact both within the sport of Swimrun and their environmental work. A few days after this announcement, ÖTILLÖ issued a press release stating that Staffan Björklund will act as the new race director for the company. According to the release: “Staffan's experience in the Swimrun sport is extensive. He worked at the very first ÖTILLÖ event in 2006, won ÖTILLÖ Utö in 2013, and raced ÖTILLÖ, The Swimrun World Championship, seven times.”While it certainly feels like an important chapter in the history of the sport that we all love is ending, we remain hopeful for the future as this new chapter begins. As it always has been, it's up to all of us to continue what Michael and Mats started 17 years ago and work with Staffan and the rest of the team at ÖTILLÖ and keep growing our community. Finally, on a programming note, we are planning on interviewing Staffan for the show soon so stay tuned for that conversation. That's it for this week. In the season 2 premier of the PRP, Adam chats it up with seasoned running enthusiast, aspiring botanist and Wayne State XC Alumni Olivia de Bear who has been preparing for the Eugene Marathon on May 1st, 2022. Olivia gets vulnerable out of the gates as she shares the story of how her recent COVID diagnosis has made the taper period for this race a bit strange. Although she is lucky enough to be in good health and even more impressive, good spirits, she explains her frustration as it relates to losing her "C-card" this close to race day. Olivia shares some insight into her busy but fulfilling career as a PA, and has tips for runners that may be confined to a work schedule that can be a bit unpredictable. Johnny Crain, former NCAA Division III National Champion and Elliptigo World Champion, joins the show as guest host and offers his earnest and refreshing insight into how running should fit into the grand equation of life. As Olivia's coach, Johnny's main focus is centered around what works for her specifically utilizing a day-to-day approach that places emphasis on her overall wellness as a human being. Control what you can, make the right decisions when given the opportunity and don't sweat the rest, an approach that Johnny has infamously deemed #wickedbonkproof Olivia takes a deep dive into the vast world of her running community and shares why having such a tight knit group of homies to trot with on a reoccurring basis is so important to her. Whether it be her brothers from other mothers Mikel Gurrea and Nirala Singh that she shares countless miles with, or her husband Kevin who locks things down at the crib while Olivia is gone for 8 hours every Sunday morning - without her crew, she selflessly admits she wouldn't be the runner nor the person she is today. Olivia then takes listeners on a tour of her childhood and explains how, surprisingly, she had very little experience with running or youth sports in general before walking on at Wayne State. For her, having the opportunity to run in college ended up being one of the true gifts of her lifetime, as it opened the door to countless opportunities (including finding her husband) that she is still reaping the benefits from today. What is Olivia's hot take on Strava and how does she utilize the platform to stay more intimately connected with her running crew?! Can dogs really run 50+ mile weeks?? Ummm why was Olivia converting Youtube videos to mp3 files until just a couple of months ago?! Why did Olivia think her running career was over after the Bayshore marathon in 2015?!?! Is Olivia on a redemption tour trying to break all of her college PR's??? All this, and oh so much more in this amusing and wellness-centered episode of the PRP. #403 - Jocelyn Rivas: Youngest Woman to Ever Complete 100 Marathons

Jocelyn Rivas from South Central Los Angeles is a 24 year old force of nature. She broke the Guinness World Record for the youngest woman to run 100 marathons at the 2021 Los Angeles Marathon. It was perfect symmetry as the LA Marathon was also her first when she was a mere high schooler. Jocelyn also broke the Record for Youngest Latina to run 100 marathons by four years. In 2013, Jocelyn decided to go see her friend run at the LA Marathon at Mile 18. She saw runners of all ages running from teenagers to 60-year-olds. This was the moment that inspired her to run a marathon. Although she knew it was going to be hard due to her medical history of being born with a broken back, neck and feet. She decided she didn't want to limit herself anymore. A couple of months later at 16 years old, she decided to train with Students Run L.A. and she crossed the finish line to her first marathon at the 2014 Los Angeles Marathon. Jen Bigham is an inspiring, bad ass mom of 4, who chased down her 8-year Olympic Trials qualifying quest by breaking the tape, scorching a 2:41 in the Eugene Marathon. Jen grew up watching her dad race 5K's and marathons, started running in middle school, and never looked back. She competed in high school and in college at Ohio State, where she battled injuries, but enjoyed working with Coach Sparks, who believed in Jen and also went on to coach two of her siblings and Molly Seidel at Notre Dame. After having her daughter in 2010, she started training again, and surprised herself by running a 5K PR in her 1st race back postpartum, which really shaped the athlete she is today. Her older brother planted the seed that she could qualify for the Olympic Trials. His strong belief in Jen—and being a multiple time qualifier himself—helped give Jen the courage to believe it too, even though she couldn't run 3 miles at the qualifier pace at the time! We discuss: coaches/mentors, belief & self-belief, hitting plateaus, breaking through them, health challenges, mindset/visualization, Atlanta Olympic Trial's with her family and dad being everywhere she needed him, the traumatic birth of her 4th child, bouncing back, finding her speed, knowing your WHY, chasing the best version of herself, being a high school coach, giving back, & mentoring. Talk about a crazy fast family. Her younger brother also qualified for the Trials and is now coaching Jen. Jen would love for them all to run the next trials and I'm HERE for it and will definitely be hosting that family POD when it happens. I hope you all enjoy this conversation as much as we did! Think back to Junior High. What were your highlights? Your accomplishments? Today's guest was introduced to running by his elementary school's P.E. coach who organized a daily run and jog for his students. Being somewhat socially awkward, this young man spent his lunch hour running laps and eventually logging over 60 miles as a 6th grader. Before moving on to High School, he finished his 8th grade year by writing his own training plan for and completing the Eugene Marathon. He spent his High School years on the Dean's list - maintaining a near 4.0 GPA, and managed to establish himself as a respectable 3K runner in Track, completed several other marathons and finished two 24 hours runs - each time passing 100K. He earned himself an academic full ride scholarship to college - where he is now - saving money for his first home with a goal of graduating on time, debt-free, and in control of his future. That P.E. teacher, incidentally, was none other than the guest from episode 28, THE King of FKTs, Jason Hardrath. And the Student, and today's guest, is Chris Eck. A truly humble and inspirational young man with whom I was honored to spend a Saturday afternoon speaking with. And that's the show! Hope you enjoyed it. I am Troy Busot and thanks again to Chris Eck for joining us. I just felt like it is really important to continue to show up as myself in all areas of my life so the right people are on my side, the right people are following me and I can lean into that more than anything." Nikki Hiltz is now a two-time guest on this show. Our first episode together April 17th, 2019 during the Boston Marathon weekend. For this one, I’m joined by David Melly, the host of the Run Your Mouth Podcast, for another crossover episode. April 2019 was just the start of Nikki’s hot streak that year. They finished third at the U.S. Championships and qualified for the world championships. They went on to make the final in Doha and ran a personal best of 4:01.52. Expect Nikki to be in the mix for that Olympic team in the 1,500 meters, which is shaping up to be one of the must-watch events at Hayward Field during the Trials. We touched on Nikki’s recent announcement that they identify as trans non-binary on Transgender Day of Visibility, which was March 31. Now if you caught us using multiple pronouns for Nikki during this episode, it’s because Nikki explains that they now use she/they as personal pronouns. We also touch on plans for the 2021 Pride 5K, Olympic Trials training and much more.

48 miles in 48 hours and more than $48,000 raised for the Release Recovery Foundation over the weekend in New York City. On national tv, Zac Clark opened up about his history with drug addiction/substance abuse and his recovery. In 2017, he co-founded Release Recovery to help others reclaim their lives from addiction. His foundation is a non-profit that helps provide scholarships to those who may not have the financial means to go and recover. A few months back, he convinced my, Ryan Welsh and Zac Price to embark on the David Goggins Challenge of running 4 miles at the top of the hour every 4 hours for 48 hours. The goal was to use running as a way to raise awareness on addiction and mental health four miles at a time. In this episode, we talk about all the highs and lows from the weekend and the power running can have for good.

"I do some of my best thinking when I'm on my long runs. Today, we've talked a lot about my recovery and my sobriety. Running is one of the greatest tools I've been given because any time I can go reset the mind. People in my life know that. They'll say, 'Dude, go for a run. Let's talk after.' Because it's such a release for me." Some of you might be familiar with Zac Clark since he won the most recent season of The Bachelorette and is currently engaged to Tayshia Adams. In this episode, you’ll learn a lot about Zac’s come-up in New Jersey and the many struggles along the way in his life that really spiraled after he underwent surgery to remove a brain tumor and got addicted to pain medication shortly thereafter. Drinking, drugs and partying took a toll on him and his relationship at the time. There’s a lot in his life story, which was shared a bit on national TV last fall. Zac went to rehab and got his life together and now serves as the co-founder of Release Recovery, which is a 501c3 non-profit dedicated to ensuring all who are ready and willing to seek professional treatment are able to. Release Recovery’s Foundation offers scholarships to bridge the gap between what people can afford and what they need to get the resources and help that they need. Trust me. Running comes into the picture and it’s one of Zac’s biggest passions. He’s run the New York City Marathon four times. He plans on running London and New York this fall. He’s been joining me and some friends for workouts the past couple of months. We’re working on getting him faster. In response, he says we need to commit to doing one hard effort with him a year so that’s how I got roped into attempting the David Goggins Challenge with him next week. That’s four miles every four hours for 48 hours for 48 miles total. A bunch of people did it at the beginning of March. We recorded this conversation at the beginning of the month and now we’re doing it April 9-11. Keep your eyes peeled on Zac’s social media pages as well as my own for updates on how we’re doing. I know it’s not gonna be easy but I’m ready to push my limits and hopefully raise some good money along the way. If you feel inspired by Zac’s story, we’re calling on you to see if you can find 48 bucks for the 48 miles we’re gonna run or maybe 4 dollars and 80 cents. "We wanted to take advantage of this opportunity to get better. I don’t have the pressure to get into a marathon build-up or if the Olympics were happening. I wanted to come out of this better. A big part of that for me was maybe taking it a little easier with the mileage and intensity and focusing back to strengthening up my leg. I lost a lot of muscle – not just in my ankle and those tendons but throughout that left leg. It’s been a long process and I think I certainly underestimated how difficult it would be. It’s been two years since I was operated on but I feel like I’m finally getting back to my old self and getting some good push-off in my left leg. There was certainly a big hitch in my stride at the trials. I really wasn’t getting a lot of push there. It was just setting down and pivoting. My right leg was doing a lot of the work. I can certainly say that I’ve made some big improvements mechanically with that." It’s been eight months since Galen Rupp won the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials on Feb. 29. In that span of time, he says he has not run a single step with another person. He’s still been training but he’s been grinding solo. That all changed on Friday when Eugene Marathon organizers put together the Row River Half Marathon. It was Rupp, Suguru Osako (his former Oregon Project teammate) and Patrick Tiernan. Many thought that Rupp could take a crack at Ryan Hall’s American record of 59:43 could be in jeopardy but Rupp finished the race in 60:22. His PR is still 59:47 from Prague in 2018. However, he walked away from Friday with the new American record in the 10-mile since he split 45:53 and Greg Meyer had run 46:13 in 1983. Osako finished behind him in 61:15. In order for the record to count, I believe you need three finishers so Pat Tiernan, who paced for a bit, took third in 66:42. Support for this episode comes from Bakline Running. She endured more than 25 stress fractures in seven years, and battled serious exercise addiction. It wasn't until after having Grace that Kate started to run again — and run fast. The foundation of the Rambling Runner Podcast is balancing running with the life's necessities. This is exactly what Jessica Rinehart has done so well. With a full-time job and a thriving online coaching business and blog, Jessica was able to put in months of high mileage training. This work culminated in a personal best of 3:07 at the Eugene Marathon. In this episode Jessica talks about how she gets running in, her less than stellar build-up to Eugene (and her shocking result), and her dedication to yearly goals. In 2017, Nick Symmonds chose to transform from one of running's most recognizable professionals (with two Olympic appearances and a silver medal at the World Championships in the 800m) to an amatuer attempting his first marathon. Not only that, but he did it in typical Nick Symmonds fashion - by being as transparent as possible every step of the way. In this episode of the Rambling Running Podcast, we talk about Nick's recent announcement that he will be running the Eugene Marathon, his previous and upcoming marathon training, and how he'd compare the pain of a marathon to the agony of a lactic acid producing 800m race. Nick also details how and why he started Run Gum and what his role as CEO entails. Meggie Smith is a chief resident in OB-GYN at the NYU Langone Medical Center in New York City, and is working to be a reproductive endocrinologist and reproductive specialist. (“I want to help women have babies,” she says.) We met when Meggie was in medical school, and now she delivers babies and performs risky surgeries as part of her job. On this episode, Meggie — a former tennis player and run-hater-turned-marathoner — talks about what it was like working at NYU when Hurricane Sandy hit, shares why she chose NYU (hint: it involves the Olsen twins), and talks about how she managed to run a Boston Qualifying marathon time while working 80-hour weeks. She opens up about “going into survival mode” at work, the first time she delivered a baby, and the very tragic — but very real — parts of her job. This summer, Meggie is headed west! Cheer her on as she finishes up her residency and heads to the University of Southern California to start a fellowship in reproductive endocrinology and infertility. Alice Saunders is the creator of Forestbound, a Boston-based company that makes and sells canvas and leather bags made from historic textiles. Alice is also a super speedy runner and marathoner. She started running later in life, and now boasts some pretty serious PRs, including a 3:19 marathon and a 1:37 half marathon. In this episode, Alice and I talk about how she created Forestbound, why she started running (for a good cause!), and our unathletic pasts — including our best strategies for skipping out on the mile during gym class in fifth grade. (Plus a few hot takes about important things like pineapple pizza.) We’re also hosting a giveaway with this episode! One lucky listener will win Alice’s famous ESCAPE Canvas Utility Bag. “Sometimes the mind during a marathon will start drifting to other competitors and external situations, when really, you need to be focusing on holding your form and a relaxed state.” * Ask the Yogi Runners is a series on Running On Om hosted by Julia Hanlon and Susie Stephen. In this episode, Susie and Julia discuss their recent marathon experiences. In part one, Julia recounts her journey guiding Lisa, a visually impaired runner, in the recent Boston Marathon. Susie explores how she incorporated yoga practices in her preparation and race plan for the Eugene Marathon, including reciting mantra, goal setting, and running without a Garmin watch. They also answer questions on how to use yoga to create hip and spinal mobility in runners. In part two, just hours after crossing the finish line, Susie recaps her experience running the Eugene Marathon and how her yoga practices were put to the test. * We would love to answer your yoga and running related questions, email us at asktheyogirunners@gmail.com!
