Alright people, the penultimate podcast installment of October, Chris & Dom sit down to review the next film from Denis Villeneuve and the long awaited second adaptation of Frank Herbert's iconic 1965 novel, Dune! a 2021 American epic science fiction film directed by Denis Villeneuve with a screenplay by Jon Spaihts, Villeneuve, and Eric Roth. It is the first of a planned two-part adaptation of the 1965 novel of the same name by Frank Herbert, primarily covering the first half of the book. Set in the far future, it follows Paul Atreides, as he and his family, the noble House Atreides, are thrust into a war for the dangerous desert planet Arrakis, between the native Fremen people and the enemy invaders, and former rulers of Arrakis, the House Harkonnen. The film stars an ensemble cast including Timothée Chalamet as the titular Paul, Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica, Oscar Isaac as Duke Leto Atreides, Josh Brolin as Gurney Halleck, Stellan Skarsgård as Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, Dave Bautista as Glossu "Beast" Rabban, Stephen McKinley Henderson as Thufir Hawat, Zendayan as Chaney, David Dastmalchian as Piter de Vries, Chang Chen as Dr. Wellington Yueh, Sharon Duncan-Brewster as Liet-Kynes, Charlotte Rampling as Rev. With the big budget blockbuster Denis Villeneuve's shot at Frank Herbert's classic sci-fi story due out next week, we figure there's no better time to revisit the David Lynch version from more than 35 years ago. I was actually in Europe last week, where the new movie was already playing, but resisted seeing it in the spirit of the podcast (and because, as much as we like movies, you shouldn't waste a night in Paris or Amsterdam in a dark theater). Cet appel est double : quitter Caladan pour rejoindre une terre pleine de dangers, accomplir, ou non, une prophétie. Dès les premières pages, un double enjeu est posé. Externe : survivre à l'épreuve d'Arrakis ; interne : déterminer s'il est, ou non, le Kwisatz Haderach. Le mouvement logique des contes est souvent de tester les puissants, pour éprouver l'idée suivante : la place des princes, qui leur est consentie à la naissance, doit être reconquise, méritée. Les princes sont donc déchus mais finissent toujours par regagner leur trône. Mieux : leur situation finale est souvent plus riche, belle, accomplie qu'au début de l'aventure. Ce fonctionnement des contes a été analysé par un professeur de littérature américain, Joseph Campbell (1904- 1987), qui l'a exposé dans un essai publié pour la première fois en 1949, Le Héros aux mille et un visages. Frank Herbert avait connaissance de ce livre et partageait avec Campbell un intérêt pour plusieurs travaux : ceux sur les mythes de James George Frazer (1854-1941) et les hypothèses sur l'inconscient collectif de Carl Gustav Jung (1875-1961). Campbell a décrit une structure narrative, appelée le « monomythe », qu'il estime présente dans les mythes du héros des différentes civilisations. Selon lui, les héros suivraient toujours les mêmes étapes de construction d'eux-mêmes. Il est à noter que les idées de Campbell ne sont pas partagées par les mythologues et anthropologues, qui y voient une schématisation excessive, sans doute féconde pour inventer des histoires, mais stérile quand il s'agit de comprendre précisément des sociétés réelles. Herbert ne voyait pas dans cette approche un outil descriptif, mais une manière de créer un mythe fictif. We've arrived at the final chapter of Book 1 of Dune.  Paul and Jessica are alone in the desert with their stilltent as Duncan Idaho, the surprise rescuer in the ornithopter, goes looking for any survivors he can help.    Paul has a coming of age moment where he puts together the dual mentat and Bene Gesserit training he's been under his whole life. That he's a part of an agenda but can choose his own path. Book Club Episode 10: Dune Part 10 This week Duncan Idaho is such a loud drunk that he wakes up Lady Jessica while she is sleeping from down the hall. Duncan has been enjoying the spice beer and hanging with the ladys a little too much. Lady Jessica then has an intense talk with Thufir and debates whether to not tell him she is pregnant with the Duke’s daughter. Duke Leto finds a corpse down the hall and then the almost corpse of the nearly deceased Shadout Mapes. He then discovers that his dentist Doctor Yueh seems to have been sabotaging the generator room. Doctor Yueh gives him some anti speed and replaces his tooth so that he can use it to assassinate Baron Vladimir Harkonnen. Pour yourself a cold beverage and listen to more Expanse.
