Our first fights of the year have happened, and they did not disappoint! We have a great episode for you all, so let's get to it. We start things off talking about the amazing performance by Magomed Ankalaev and his knockout of Johnny Walker. With the win and performance, we were also prompted to really consider his position at the top of the division and if he is next for a title shot! Especially if Jamahal Hill isn't ready to go by the summer. After that, we move into some of the other standout fights on the card, including Jim Miller's big win, Mario Bautista impressing, and more. From there, we move into our picks and predictions for this year's first PPV, UFC 297, headlined by Sean Strickland vs. Dricus Du Plesis. We also pick the co-main, with Bueno Silva fighting Pennington and Arnold Allen against Movsar Evolev. Lastly, we move into the news, which included a bunch of fight announcements, including some fights for UFC 300, UFC 299, and some other fight nights. With some of the backlash over the booking of UFC 300, we also talk about whether the UFC is lacking star power. Like always, please be sure to like, comment, rate, and subscribe.
Thanks in part to a high concentration of the most high-volume judges, the UFC's 2024 debut got off to a smooth start in terms of scoring. Even the many stoppages were clean from the referees. But no perfect night at UFC Apex gave Scott and Dan a couple Contested Rounds to wade into the new year. Plus, word of a 10-8 training session with the Nevada State Athletic Commission gave the CSJ reason to revisit a few lopsided rounds from the end of 2023. linktr.ee/couchsidejudges
Magomed Ankalaev wanted to make a case to get a title shot against Alex Periera heading into his UFC Vegas 84 main event bout with Johnny Walker, and with a brutal second-round knockout victory, Ankalaev certainly accomplished that. But will it be enough to get Ankalaev to a second opportunity at UFC gold, or will he have more work to do? Following the UFC's first event of 2024, MMA Fighting's Mike Heck, Alexander K. Lee, and Eric Jackman react to Ankalaev's stoppage win, and talk his chances in getting the next shot at Pereira and the light heavyweight title. Additionally, the panel discusses Jim Miller's incredible performance in the co-main event, his callout of Paul Felder or Matt Brown for UFC 300, Mario Bautista's statement win against Ricky Simon, Jean Silva's memorable UFC debut, and other standout moments. One-time UFC title challenger Anthony Smith returns to co-host episode 29 of The Fighter vs. The Writer as he discusses the latest happening with his career including possible matchups against either Magomed Ankalaev or Paul Craig. Smith will also react to the recent altercation where Jorge Masvidal allegedly attacked Colby Covington outside a Miami restaurant with the UFC's only “BMF” champion later arrested on aggravated battery and criminal mischief charges. Was Masvidal completely out of bounds with his actions or did Covington invite trouble with some of the things he said in the lead up to their recent fight at UFC 272? Smith will also breakdown the action from UFC Columbus where Curtis Blaydes defeated Chris Daukaus in the main event before calling for an interim heavyweight title shot with reigning champion Francis Ngannou likely out until 2023 while he's recovering from knee surgery. Finally, Smith will give his take on Jake Paul's latest declaration where he says he would knockout ex-two-division UFC champion Conor McGregor in the first round if they ever met in a mixed martial arts contest. On this episode of the podcast we broke down the UFC fight night card which involved a chess match between Ciryl Gane and Jairzinho Rozenstruik. We dicussed the rise of Ciryl Gane on his way into the top of the UFC heavyweight division and who his next fight could be against. We also talked about the fight between Magomed Ankalaev and Nikita Krylov which we were surprised that it managed to go the distance. Another topic of discussion was the war between Pedro Munhoz and Jimmie Riveria, which lead to an in depth discussion about calf kicks and their effectiveness in the MMA world. The second half of the episode was spent giving our predictions for next week's blockbuster of a fight card. We believe that this will be potentially the greatest card of all time because of the amount of talent that fills the slots.

Heavy Hands is back with a particularly ramble-y episode, in which we look forward to Paul Felder vs Dan Hooker, and try not to think too deeply about Diego Sanchez. Can Paul Felder's gritty wear Dan Hooker down, or will he get shot to pieces at range? Jimmy Crute vs Michael Oleksiejczuk, a light heavyweight matchup which is simultaneously very dumb and very intriguing Jan of Rivia avenges another defeat Diego Sanchez funny! And sad. Do we all fret too much about growing old and potentially suffering ill health? The purpose of this podcast is to highlight lifestyle interventions that could help us live longer, healthier lives. It focusses on extending health span - the number of years that we enjoy optimum health. But could it be that such aspirations are over-rated and rather pander to paranoid personalities. Dr. Magomed Khaidakov is a research assistant professor at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and the author of A Pessimistic Guide to Anti-aging Research: Death is Immortal. The book offers a critical guide to current longevity research and anti-aging interventions. In this LLAMA podcast interview with Peter Bowes, Dr Khaidakov explains his skepticism towards aging research and why he believes longevity science is dogged by “hype" and "self-promotion."Check out our website at LLAMApodcast.com In this interview we cover: Dr. Khaidakov’s conditions for growing old.Holding a pessimistic or realistic view of aging? The “hype" and "self-promotion” surrounding aging research. Are study results distorted through the use of obese lab animals? The "sweet spot" for good health based on Body Mass Index (BMI)Is an extra 10 years, which is "within design limits" of the human body, worth it?Life span in years for humans, rats, mice, flies and worms (yes we know C. elegans only live days) versus health span. Why every day aging and general health issues are problems that are "almost solved."The longevity business “driven by greed."Exploring the design flaws of the human body. Health aging without effort “exploited” by those who devise health regimens. Lacking self-discipline and smoking. “Slightly paranoid personalities” who spend too much time pondering over their longevity. The practical and philosophical issues raised by death. Being content with a pleasurable life. No complaints. Why biology will play second fiddle to big data science in the future. "It’s your personal decision whether you have a healthy lifestyle.”
Ira Pastor, ideaXme exponential health ambassador, interviews Dr. Magomed Khaidakov, Assistant Research Professor, Department of Internal Medicine, University of Arkansas for the Medical Sciences. https://www.amazon.com/Pessimistic-Gu... Ira Pastor Comments: Today we are going to be talking about mitochondria, among many other longevity and anti-aging themed topics. We're also going to talk a little bit about the role of pessimism and realism when it comes to the human translation of certain technologies, and why it is important to limit "messianic thinking" as much as possible. Mitochondria The mitochondria are double-membrane-bound organelles found in most eukaryotic organisms and are responsible for generating most of the cell's supply of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), used as a source of chemical energy. Thus mitochondria is termed the "powerhouse of the cell." Damage and subsequent dysfunction in mitochondria is an important factor in a range of human diseases due to their influence in cell metabolism. Mitochondrial disorders often present themselves as neurological disorders, but can also manifest as myopathies, diabetes, multiple endocrinopathy, and a variety of other systemic disorders. The mitochondrial genome represents the full genetic complement of a mitochondria and contains approximately 16,600 base pairs, encoding 37 genes, and the polypeptides it codes for are all subunits of enzyme complexes of the oxidative phosphorylation system. Also, mitochondrial dysfunction can not only be driven based on damage to these genes, but also to mitochondrial genes in the nucleus, leading to many rare diseases such as Friedreich's ataxia, hereditary spastic paraplegia, and Wilson's disease. Dr. Magomed Khaidakov: To discuss this, and many other topics, I am joined by Dr. Magomed Khaidakov, Assistant Research Professor, Department of Internal Medicine, University of Arkansas for the Medical Sciences. Dr. Khaidakov obtained his Doctor of Medicine (MD) from 1st Medical Institute, Moscow, Russia, his PhD in Molecular Biology, from the University of Victoria (UVIC), British Columbia, Canada and for the last few decades his primary research interests have been the biology of aging and degenerative pathologies, as well as identification and correction of biological design flaws that limit mammalian lifespan. He is also the author of the recently published book "Pessimistic Guide To Anti-Aging Research." We will hear from Dr. Khaidakov: About his background and an overview of the importance of mitochondria in both health and degenerative disease. An overview of his theories related to species-specific lifespans and the correlation with accumulation of large deletions in mitochondrial DNA. Other important areas of anti-aging research, and their limitations. A futuristic view of anti-aging technologies. Finally, his perspective on the longevity biotech community and places for pessimism and realism to have a role in critical thinking of novel approaches.
