August is National Minority Donor Awareness Month (NMDAM). The Gift of Life Donor Program helps to heal lives by coordinating the recovery and distribution of organs and tissues used in lifesaving and life- enhancing transplants. The Gift of Life donor program has been serving the community for 50 years, and it's the vital link between patients who wants to donate with over 100,000 patients who are awaiting transplantation according to Rick Hasz, President and CEO of the Gift of Life Program. This month provides an opportunity to clear up misconceptions in the minority community regarding donations. “We also know there's a huge need, in the, in the minority community for transplants. Unfortunately. Especially among communities of color. There's 3 to 4 more times likely to suffer from kidney disease. And need a transplant. You know, right now, 60% of the patients who are waiting for a kidney transplant are people of color. And I think we have to get that information out, so that when families are making that decision about donation, they know that by saying yes, they're going to actually be helping people in their own community. There's such a huge need. Because of that.” Hasz says the number one misconception is if a person puts donor on their driver's license, they won't receive medical help if hospitalized.  “That couldn't be further from the truth. Hospital staff do not have access, to your driver's license is very rarely found with you at, you know, after you've been in an accident. And it's only after that you have died that that information is accessed, and then shared, with your family. And so, the reality is that putting that donor designation on your license, you let everybody know that at the time, you, you know, you want to help somebody else. And it takes that burden and that decision making, away from your family, and allows them to be able to honor your legacy, after you've passed that.” Willam Johnson received a kidney transplant in 2022 after being on dialysis for five years. He registered on four separate lists in Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington, DC, and even Baltimore. “You have to go through a battery of tests to see if you are able to even receive a kidney transplant. So I had to go through the testing basically at four different medical centers. And so then it's a wait, once you accept it on the list, then it's a waiting game for that phone call to come to see if they have an available kidney that matches you. And since there are so many people who are on the list, it doesn't happen overnight. It doesn't happen overnight unless you have someone who was willing to be an organ donor to donate for you, because you can live with one kidney, “said Johnson. Cynthia Slater's son Ezekial passed away at 21 years old in 2022. He registered as an organ donor when he was 16 years old. Through his generosity, he was able to save five lives with organ donations. “You know that even in death, he still continues on. So it means a lot. As we spoke to earlier, you know, everyone's not always in the family on board with. A donor make a donor's decision. But it was made. It was so much easier for me to make that decision for our family to make that decision, because we knew that that was Ezekiel's specific, decision. So we weren't making thinking about is this something that he would want to do? But he had donated, you know, made himself a donor. Abby talks about the "bittersweet" feeling she felt after last weekend's NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships in Tallahassee. She chats about a tremendous 2021 that included a Big Ten individual title in the 3,000 steeplechase, finishing 11th at outdoor nationals in that event and, a week later, running in the U.S. Olympic Trials. Abby goes into the transition from running 800s first starting out at Minnesota to finding the event she loves, the steeplechase. A kínai városban terjedő rejtélyes betegséget nem a visszatérő SARS-vírus okozza - ez volt a címe az első cikknek, ami a 444-en megjelent a 2020-as koronavírus járványról. Január 5-én tette be Horváth Bence kollégám, vasárnap délutáni ügyeletben, és nagyjából ennek megfelelő érdeklődés követte a hírt, a cikket tízen lájkolták a Facebookon. Ma már nehéz visszaemlékezni azokra az időkre, amikor a járvány még annyira nem volt hír, hogy a hétvégi ügyeletes is talán csak azért rakta be, mert nem talált semmi érdekesebbet. Nem sokkal Bence cikkének megjelenése után a járvány ugyanis eluralta a világ sajtóját, Az újságíróknak, szerkesztőségeknek ki kellett  kielégítenie a soha nem látott olvasói híréhséget, meg miközben a korábbinál sokkal kevesebb volt az elérhető és megbízható információ, a válság miatt pedig komolyan megcsappant a médiacégek bevétele. Ráadásul Magyarországon a kormány a járványt is arra használja ki, hogy tovább hadakozzon a sajtóval, és ahogy egyik járványhullám jön a másik után, az emberek frusztrációjának egy része is a sajtón csapódik le.    A Pozitív podcastsorozat mai adásában egy kicsit a magunkkal foglalkozunk, vagyis azzal, hogy hogyan kezelte és kezeli a járványt a sajtó, milyen új feladatokat, felelősségeket és kihívásokat jelent a koronavírus az újságíróknak és hogyan hatott a járvány okozta válság a magyar médiapiacra.    Az adás első felében Haszán Zoltán kollégámmal, a 444.hu szerkesztőjével beszélgettem, aki egy éve szinte minden napját a járványügyi adatok böngészésével kezdi, és aki, Szurovecz Illéssel együtt összefogja a koronavírus-járvány alakulásával és a kormányzati reakciókkal kapcsolatos anyagainkat. Zoltán ráadásul egy jó ideje újságíróból amolyan járványügyi közszolgáltató adatközlővé is átalakult, a 444 koronavírus oldalán ugyanis napi szinten olyan, a járvány alakulásának megértésében kulcsfontosságú adatokat számol ki és frissít grafikonokon, amelyeket a kormány, valamiért, nem hajlandó közölni. Az interjúban sokat beszélgettünk arról, hogy miért alakult ki ez a helyzet, vagyis hogy miért van az, hogy a magyar kormány olyan alapadatokat tart vissza, amelyeket semmilyen más országban nem titkosak. Az Orbán-kormány a tőle független sajtót is megpróbálja behúzni a járványkezelés kapcsán kreált politikai konfliktusokba, azzal vádolva például a 444-et, hogy direkt úgy válogat a járványügyi adatokból, hogy rossz fényben tüntesse fel a kormányt. Zoltán szerint viszont nem arról van szó, hogy a független sajtó a kormánnyal próbálna viaskodni, csak a valóságot próbáljuk bemutatni. Ezi viszont eltér attól, mint amit a kormány mutat.    A járványban nemcsak azzal kell megküzdenie a sajtó egy részének, hogy a kormány elhallgat információkat, majd hazugsággal vagy valami még rosszabbal vádolja a médiát, hanem azzal is, hogy a koronavírus okozta válság miatt a médiavállalatok bevételei is nagyot csökkentek. Adásunk másik vendége, Urbán Ágnes médiakutató, a Mérték Médiaelemző Műhely munkatársa és a Budapesti Corvinus Egyetem docense kiszámolta, hogy a kormánypárti sajtót természetesen nem érintette ilyen rosszul a válság, a kormány ugyanis a járvány alatt is nagyon sok pénzt csatornázott ezekhez a médiavállalatokhoz, ezzel tovább torzítva a magyar médiapiacot. Viszont még így is úgy érezte a kormány, hogy bővíteni kell a Fideszhez hű, de legalábbis nem kritikus sajtó elérését, ez vezethetett például ahhoz, hogy a járvány alatt, részben arra hivatkozva a kormánypárt elfoglalta az Indexet.  Urbán Ágnessel arról is beszélgettünk, miközben a járvány alatt sokkal többen olvastak újságot, sok olvasó a sajtóra vetíti ki a járvány miatti frusztrációját. Viszont szerinte aki azzal vádolja a sajtót, hogy anyagi érdekből fújja föl a járványveszélyről szóló híreket, az teljesen félreérti a média működését.

It was a week during which in the wake of yet another gun massacre, President Obama got mad instead of sad, and America spent the week shouting at one another. Also, Volkswagen is poisoning the world, and UK Prime Minister David Cameron really likes pork, and even the possiblity of water on Mars doesn't lift the cloud. Luckily I have two of my favorite and most frequent guests, Bill Bullock and Stephanie Hasz, to help me get through it. Bill reveals his fear of Stephanie. Stephanie reveals her fear of space travel. They have a conversation about assault vs betrayal during which I just keep my mouth shut. Stephanie really needs to wash her hands more. Sonia will never set foot in Wisconsin. I had dreams of high-minded discourse when I started this podcast. They're all ashes now.
