Rafael Fiziev is back on track after a highlight-reel knockout of Manuel Torres in the UFC Baku main event, but is he still in the contender picture or is time for the fan favorite to chase fun fights? On an all-new edition of On To the Next One, MMA Fighting's Mike Heck and Alexander K. Lee discusses what's next for the resurgent Fiziev and his hopes of getting the call for a "BMF" title fight. Additionally, future matchups are discussed for main card spoiler Matheus Camilo, Asu Almabayev after a dominant submission win over Charles Johnson, intriguing middleweights Ikram Aliskerov and Abus Magomedov, and more. Rafael Fiziev sent a reminder to UFC fans, and the rest of the lightweight division after a sensational knockout victory over surging contender Manuel Torres in the main event of Saturday's UFC Baku card. Now that Fiziev is back on track, what makes sense for him, and how do you think the new UFC Meta Ranking structure will reward him? Lee — reacts to the event as a whole, Fiziev's spectacular performance, his callout for the BMF title, and what fights make sense. UFC 325 had some really great moments and finishes throughout the card. Ruffy over Fiziev, BSD over Dan Hooker and some not so great. Chief of the worst was just the booking in the main event, Diego Lopes vs Alexander Volkanovski looked like Lopes vs Volk 1. It was a dominant performance the first time and it was only 9 months ago. What was even the point?
UFC 325 wasn't built the same as its predecessor, sacrificing quality to ensure local favorites were featured prominently on the card, and having a main event that kind of makes no sense. But that doesn't mean the event was a bust—quite the opposite. The undercard saw an even mix of finishes to decisions, and some fresh ROAD to UFC talent to keep our eye on in the future. The main portion of the card bore witness to Quillan Salkilld embarrass Jamie Mullarkey in about three minutes flat, proving the gigantic gulf in the odds was justified. Tai Tuivasa took his sixth, straight loss at the hands of Tallison Teixeira, and it was as depressing as you might assume, for those that didn't watch. UFC has to let Tai go and stop embarrassing him in front of his people.Mauricio Ruffy took Fiziev nearly to the end of round two, then decided he would end Rafael's suffering, scoring the TKO and sending the Azerbaijani back to the L side of the column. Benoit Saint-Denis put a whooping on Dan “Prostituta” ← (IYKYK) after a first round of Hooker besting him with body kicks and guillotine attempts. The second round was a different story once BSD got the Aussie down, raining down elbows and strikes of all kinds, bloodying the man to the point that Herb Dean stepped in to wave the fight off.Alexander Volkanovski proved once again that he's the featherweight kingpin. He damned near got a shutout, but I gave Diego Lopes a narrow round 2, as did two of the judges. The third judge gave Volk a perfect 50-45, which was also acceptable, as many fans and pundits did. It was a terrific contest, though, and Lopes never looked like he was out of it. He never gave up trying to get the fight finished, yet still couldn't solve the riddle. On to the next one. Now that we've reviewed the highlights, let's check out the results and bonuses while we're here.MMA Vivisection & 6th Round is a reader-supported publication. Fresh off UFC 313, Luke Thomas and Brian Campbell are back in NYC to break down all the action. Magomed Ankalaev dethroned Alex Pereira to capture the Light Heavyweight title despite going 0-11 on takedown attempts. Given Pereira's recent reign of terror, how surprising was Ankalaev's ability to pressure, control the pace, and use angles and technique to neutralize one of the sport's most dangerous strikers? In the co-main event, Justin Gaethje relied on veteran guile to outwork Rafael Fiziev in their rematch and keep his place in the title picture. At 36, and coming off a brutal knockout loss to Max Holloway, Gaethje proved that he's still an elite lightweight. Were the whispers of his decline premature, and does he have one more title run in him? Looking at the bigger picture, does Dana White have a star problem? With more champions being labeled as “boring,” is the UFC facing a marketability issue? Plus, the guys dive into all the latest boxing news from the weekend. Learn more about your ad choices. On today's episode, I get you ready for this weekend's UFC 313 showdown in Las Vegas. I've witnessed some training sessions up close and personal and I have to say ... Alex Pereira's preparation is something special. And while I'm hesitant to choose a winner in the main event, Alexander Volkanovski makes no hesitation with his.I'm also liking what I'm hearing from both Rafael Fiziev and Justin Gaethje regarding their respective mindsets heading into next month's UFC 314 bout. And after watching Fiziev train this week, now I understand why he's favored against Gaethje.Plus, I ran into Matt Serra, and it reminded me of the legendary feuds he created—and how that ties into what we're seeing from Dricus du Plessis right now.To support this program, please leave me a review on Apple Podcasts or submit a rating on my Spotify page.Chapters:Pereira's training (00:00)Pereira's dancing (6:45)Pereira vs. Ankalaev (10:08)Volkanovski's main event prediction (17:22)Robert Whittaker's brilliance (24:00)Gaethje vs. Fiziev 2 (31:44)Fiziev's training (40:00)Matt Serra's career (45:29)
