June Lunney famously characterized the end of life functional course of people with dementia as a slow dwindle over time. Tom Gill later found that people with dementia do indeed have persistent severe disability throughout the last year of their lives. But from our clinical work, many of us are familiar with people with dementia who experience sudden shocks to their health, think hip fracture, think hospitalization for pneumonia. Those disruptive events or shocks often portend a major decline in function from which people with dementia never fully recover. And they're often a sign of (or cause of?) worsening prognosis. Today we talk about disruptive events, or health and wealth shocks. We start with Lauren Hunt, who described the incidence and outcomes of hip fracture and hospitalization for pneumonia in a pair of publications in JAGS, comparing people with dementia who experience these events to people without dementia. We then turn to social events, starting with Rebecca Rodin, who studied the effect of widowhood on mortality and function for people with dementia, cancer, and organ failure, published in JAMA Network Open. Finally, we turn to Tsai-Chin Cho, who studied the impact of a wealth shock (loss of 75%+ of wealth in a short time period) on cognitive decline in 4 countries. Tsai-Chin's article, published in Lancet Healthy Longevity, found a tantalizing hint that countries with stronger safety nets had lower incidence of wealth shocks, and less of a deleterious impact of the wealth shock on cognitive function. Wait, so one key message is that social health is linked to physical and cognitive health?!? And the government can do something about that?!? Yes indeed, we like to hammer that home regularly, dear listeners. And I enjoyed singing Leonard Cohent's Who By Fire, about the many ways people might die…you know…typical uplifting GeriPal song lyrics! -Alex Smith Additional links mentioned by Tsai-Chin Cho: -Wealth shocks and mortality in the US -Change in marital status as a risk for wealth shock

The All Blacks squad posed as many questions as answers, with just five loosies and a colossal six midfield backs. Will Ardie be at 7? Will Rieko be on the wing?ARP breaks down the squad and talks to All Blacks assistant coach Jason Ryan about why the likes of Crusaders stars David Havili and Ethan Blackadder didn't make the cut. Jippa, Bryn and Ross also look into the French squad and why the Lions were so poor in their opening clash. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
The Louvre's staff closed the world's most-visited museum with a snap strike, blaming “untenable” crowding and a 20 % cut in state funding even as attendance soars. Philip and Scott pull three operating fixes every attraction can steal now—hard capacity caps, timed-entry tech, and reinvesting in on-site teams before adding the next wing—because a six-year master plan won't save a gallery that melts down tomorrow. Across the Atlantic, Netflix unveiled its first Netflix House venues—permanent ticketed centers built around Wednesday, One Piece, Stranger Things, and Squid Game. The hosts explain why Netflix needs brick-and-mortar revenue as YouTube does to streaming what streaming once did to cable, and what that means for parks that suddenly share a lane with a $200 billion content giant. Bottom line: cultural icons must treat capacity as an asset while digital titans rush to monetize IP in the real world—collision is coming. Listen to weekly BONUS episodes on our Patreon.

In this fiery segment, the host breaks down a so-called "China trade deal" that's anything but. Despite media buzz, key tariffs remain untouched while the U.S. agrees to welcome Chinese students—days after intercepting an alleged Chinese bioweapon. The episode dives deep into how Biden-era rare earth policy left Trump cornered in negotiations, granting China leverage over U.S. supply chains. It also uncovers the true nature of an ICE raid in L.A.—not a simple immigration sweep, but a cartel money laundering bust. As Democrats erupt, connections between cartel operations and political protection are laid bare. This explosive commentary exposes geopolitical betrayal, national security risks, and the corrupt convergence of crime and politics.

IFPRI Policy Seminar Fertilizer, soil health, and economic shocks: Policy lessons learned from recent events Organized by IFPRI, Food Policy, and the CGIAR Science Program on Policy Innovations June 11, 2025 Join us for a discussion of key findings from a recent special issue of Food Policy exploring the complex interactions between fertilizer use, soil health management, and economic shocks in various agricultural systems. Governments around the world have long implemented policies to enhance agricultural productivity through inorganic fertilizer application and soil management, yet recent global disruptions, from the 2020–2022 food, fuel, and fertilizer price crisis to ongoing climatic uncertainties, have challenged the effectiveness of these interventions. Authors and editors of the special issue will present evidence on the medium-term effects of rising fertilizer prices and their implications for global demand, highlighting the disproportionate effects on smallholder farmers in low- and middle-income countries. The discussion will also cover issues related to the role of targeted subsidy programs, integrated soil fertility management, and site-specific nutrient approaches. A panel of fertilizer experts will discuss how these insights can support policymakers seeking to mitigate price volatility, strengthen soil health, and ensure resilience in agricultural production, particularly during adverse weather events and economic shocks. This seminar offers critical perspectives for researchers, policymakers, and agribusiness leaders working to build more sustainable and equitable food systems in an increasingly uncertain world. Introduction and Opening Remarks Ruth Hill, Director, Markets, Trade, and Institutions, IFPRI Christopher Barrett, Stephen B. and Janice G.
