Trump made no humanitarian or democratic claims — only a blunt assertion of power, resources, and control. Suzi talks to Brazilian political economist Pedro Paulo Zahluth Bastos who says this new “Donroe Doctrine” is openly transactional, unapologetically imperial, and signals weakness: a declining hegemon turns to force to secure oil, minerals, and supply chains. We discuss why Venezuela was targeted, how China figures centrally in US strategy, and the trouble of defending Maduro in the name of “anti-imperialism.” That question — how to oppose US imperialism without defending corrupt regimes — leads directly to Ukraine. Denys Pilash of Ukraine's democratic socialist organization Sotsialnyi Rukh draws on his scholarly work on Venezuela. He is speaking from Kyiv in blackout conditions, under bombardment and infrastructure attacks. We discuss why the struggle against Maduro's government and the struggle against American imperialism are not opposites, but two sides of the same conflict, in which people become pawns in political games. Pilash says for this reason, as internationalists, "we must speak out in solidarity with the people of Venezuela, the same solidarity that Venezuelans showed towards Ukraine in its resistance to Russian aggression." Esta semana, en Economía Para Quedarte Sin Amigos, abordamos uno de esos temas en los que no hay acuerdo ni siquiera entre los que se dicen liberales. Sí, hay otros más importantes o que a los que discuten les importan más. Pero en pocos hay tanta diferencia entre ellos como en éste: hablamos de la propiedad intelectual. Para ayudarnos, tendremos como invitado a uno de los grandes libertarios españoles, el profesor Miguel Anxo Bastos, doctor en Ciencias Económicas y Empresariales, licenciado en Ciencias Económicas y licenciado en Ciencias Políticas; y profesor titular del Departamento de Ciencia Política y Administración de la Universidad de Santiago de Compostela. Con él conversaremos sobre las raíces de esta legislación, sobre si tuvo sentido en algún momento y sobre si lo tiene ahora. Y, quizás lo más importante, nos preguntaremos si es una ayuda a la innovación o un freno. También nos acompaña Elen Irazabal (profesora de ética de IA en la UC3M , profesora en el IE y experta en temas de IA y propiedad intelectual). Nos preguntaremos si todo esto tiene alguna lógica desde el punto de vista del negocio. En lo que tiene que ver con la música, por ejemplo, a la industria le ha ido mucho mejor cuando ha dejado a un lado el enfoque prohibicionista y ha aceptado la realidad de las nuevas tecnologías. Sin embargo, para alguno de los nuevos canales de escucha (de Spotify a Youtube) sigue con el mismo acercamiento: prohibir cualquier tipo de reproducción o uso de música con "derechos". Y analizaremos si no estaremos creando monopolios artificiales, en parte impulsados por una industria que crecer alrededor de la legislación: nos referimos a la industria de la gestión de los derechos. Cada vez hay más gente que vive de mantener estos conflictos, protegerlos, ampliarlos... En lo que tiene que ver con la tecnología o la investigación, por ejemplo, los equipos legales relacionados con la protección de las patentes son cada vez más numerosos.
