This one's a biggie – Marty O'Donnell, composer for games like Halo, Destiny, Riven, and current audio director for Highwire Games, is on CrossFade to talk about one of the albums that convinced him to stop just playing music and start composing instead! Gentle Giant's “Octopus” is one of Marty's favorite records and “hugely influential” to his path as a musician and composer. If not for this album and the friends he made over it, he may have stuck to performing piano – and some of your favorite video games would sound a whole lot different. Matt's pick, the equally English “The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society,” was a critical underdog that's achieved new life as a cult classic in the 50+ years since its release. Matt thinks it's better than The Beatles in some ways. Don't tell him I wrote that here. I wanna make him explain that take on a future episode. We also talk about Marty's stint as a commercial jingle writer, the importance of having a hook, 16th century counterpoint, Marty's weirdest influences, and much more, including a great series of questions from the MinnMax community! Golem , created by Highwire Games and released in November, has been one of the most-anticipated VR games in recent years. The game puts the player in the world as the younger child of a family who live near a huge ruined city filled with treasures and populated by massive golems. With a special artifact, the children are able to inhabit a golem themselves and explore the city. Nearly four years ago I talked with legendary composer Marty O'Donnell about his project to create a prequel album of music for Golem to set the scene and invite players into the world of the game, so it was wonderful to have a chance to catch up with Marty and chat about how he used all that musical material in the game. In addition to being the game's composer, Marty is also Highwire's audio designer, which allowed him to create a world where the music and sound design complement each other so well that it's hard to tell at times where the natural sounds of the game leave off and the music begins. If you don't

VR game development still has many questions left to be answered, and in the past three years of development, Highwire Games has attempted to answer some of them. In this talk, we discuss the techniques used to realize the soundscape of Golem, a fully-featured, high-fidelity game for PlayStation VR. From the first sounds that caught our ears through the challenges that arose and the solutions we found, we answered many questions, but many are still left. Developing in virtual reality requires new technologies and techniques, but also a steadfast commitment to the aesthetics of traditional media. We’ll discuss why, in the end, it's still all about what comes out of the speakers (or in this case, the headphones). GameSoundCon is two days of intensive sessions, panels and masterclasses on the business, creative and technical challenges of game music and sound, designed for those coming from Film, TV, music and other more traditional media.
