In which the Curmudgeons meditate on the year in which grunge as a movement officially entered the universal rock consciousness. The Seattle rock scene in the mid-to-late 1980s was defined by a bunch of smart, ambitious wiseasses who were in a virtual competition with one another to find the truest sweet spot between punk and metal. However, it was not until the band Mudhoney found an enthusiastic and adoring fanbase in the United Kingdom in 1988 and 1989 that the rest of the world started to take notice. An inquisitive and diligent writer named Everett True, with help of storied Seattle record company Sub Pop, traveled to Seattle and cranked out an authoritative, lovingly crafted primer on grunge for the magazine Melody Maker that triggered a wave of buzz and set in motion the commercial forces that made grunge a cultural phenomenon two-plus years later. And True's timing was impeccable: Mudhoney, Soundgarden, Mother Love Bone, Screaming Trees, Tad and this one "little brother" band named Nirvana all released exciting music in 1989. Jason and Paul celebrate the 35th anniversary of the lone Temple of the Dog record by reviewing it...retroactively. In the wake of Andrew Wood's death, Chris Cornell sought to mourn through music...writing music to honor his friend who'd died of a drug overdose. In doing so he convinced Wood's former Mother Love Bone bandmates, Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard, to help him flesh out and record the music along with Soundgarden drummer Matt Cameron...and lead guitarist Mike McCeady (who'd been recently jamming with Ament and Gossard in a new project which would eventually become Pearl Jam). This is that record and this is our review of it...35 years later.Buy Pod MerchBecome a PatronWatch Us on YouTubeFollow Us on InstagramFollow Us on FacebookFollow us on XPlease take a short survey HERE to help us better the show! It's a brand new year, and a brand new season of the podcast will feature a brand new series where each week we will cover every single Pearl Jam tour year in chronological order! The kick off starts here with 1991 as we cover a show that's only the second known bootleg from back when they were still billed as Mookie Blaylock at Florentine Gardens in Los Angeles. This was the beginning of their first tour - an 11-show west coast swing opening up for the surging Alice In Chains. This show is like an artifact dug up from underground and showcased to a group of people interested in studying the past, but the bootleg for this show had been available in the 90s, yet not widely circulated. For a show that has the live debuts of Garden and Brother, and the only performance for 18 years of the latter, you would think that there would be interest from nerdy fans who wanted their hands on everything. Well, that was not the case. We invite Patrick and Brian from our Hallucinogenic Recipe podcast to talk about why this show wasn't as massed produced as it could have been. Was it due to audio quality? Was it due to popularity of shows in the mid-90s garnering more attention? They'll break down all of the reasons, and the reasons why it needs to be heard today. As we'll do with every show during this series, we'll give a synopsis of the entire tour year and some statistical analysis of what went down. The episode is much longer than the actual show that clocks in at 40 minutes, but don't worry, because we get to tell the tale of our friend "taper dude" and how excited he was to witness the former Mother Love Bone in their new formation. Delving into her beautifully crafted new book, Pearl Jam Live: 35 Years of Legendary Music and Revolutionary Shows, Salena provides a unique perspective on the band's incredible journey. The conversation explores Pearl Jam's origins, born from the ashes of Seattle's "tragedy-stricken" music scene and bands like Mother Love Bone. Fragassi discusses how the band fused the arena-rock grandeur of The Who and Led Zeppelin with the raw, DIY ethos of punk rock, creating a sound that was both monumental and deeply personal.Discover the stories behind Pearl Jam's revolutionary struggle against the corporate music machine, including their famous battle with Ticketmaster and their conscious decision to step away from music videos and mainstream promotion. Fragassi explains how this "era of no" was a survival mechanism that allowed the band to maintain its authenticity and ultimately ensured its remarkable longevity. This in-depth interview also highlights: How Eddie Vedder, an outsider from San Diego, fundamentally altered the band's DNA. This week, the Imbalanced Boys explore the birth and life (so far) of Pearl Jam. They were formed by Seattle stalwarts after the death of Andrew Wood, the singer for Mother Love Bone. The episode includes a brief discussion of Wood's death, as Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament moved on and found an incredible Rock & Roll life. The boys discuss the arrival of Eddie Vedder, and the various drummers who've been in the fold, as part of the overall history of this living legend of a band! Unlike many subjects here on the podcast, this band is still going, at their own pace, in their own way. And we follow...

Ever wonder why 80s glam metal still packs out tribute nights and sparks passionate debates decades later? This week on Dig Me Out, we're throwing on the leather, cranking the Aquanet, and diving into the wild, hook-filled world of 80s Glam Metal—the scene that turned the Sunset Strip into rock's most outrageous runway and gave us anthems for every party, heartbreak, and hair-flip in between. From the genre's glitter-soaked roots to its neon-tinted MTV heyday and eventual fall from grace, our roundtable takes on the big questions: What truly defines glam metal? Why did it explode—and then burn out—in such spectacular fashion? And which albums still deserve a spot in your rotation, even if you've sworn off spandex for good? With special guests James Barber (curator of the definitive “Young & Wild: A Decade of American Glam Metal” box set) and Alex Williams (outlaw country artist reimagining 80s metal classics), we dig deep into the music, the image, and the legacy of a genre that's as much about attitude as it is about riffs. If you love the infectious hooks of Poison, the streetwise grit of Cinderella, or the genre-bending spirit of bands like Mother Love Bone and Faster Pussycat—or if you've ever debated whether “hair metal” is a badge of honor or a press-invented slur—this episode is for you. We connect the dots from glam's 70s origins to its 80s explosion, and even trace its DNA into modern pop country and arena rock. Think of it as a crash course in everything that made—and unmade—one of rock's most colorful eras.Episode Highlights0:00 – [Intro] – The glam metal mission statement: why this scene still matters5:12 – [Meet the Guests] – James Barber on assembling the “Young & Wild” box set; Alex Williams on turning glam anthems into outlaw country21:00 – [Defining the Sound] – What separates glam metal from hard rock and thrash? This week, we lace up our Doc Martins and hike over to the Pacific Northwest to the home of GRUNGE! We discuss bands outside the usual suspects of Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, and Pearl Jam. Your hosts fondly remember this time, as we were young adults when the Seattle scene invaded all US rock n' roll avenues. In retrospect, this sounds like less of a movement and more of a melting pot of many of the genres that had been established in silos during the 70s and 80s. Don't think you like grunge? Then check this out! This episode features songs from bands outside the big 4 of grunge, but we don't think you'll be totally surprised. Many of these groups had similarities with the producers that were chosen, namely, Jack Endino. A perfect amalgam of punk, classic rock, and metal is right in Captain Content and Kevin's wheelhouse. As usual, we have a lot of fun reminiscing about this unique time in rock history. EK On the Go

Drift through alleyways, inlets and ancestral memory with Deena Taylor—Navy veteran, podcast host and lifelong Bremerton resident—as she unveils the hidden stories shaping this salt-stained corner of the Pacific Northwest. Deena, creator of Bremelore, peels back the layers of a maritime town sculpted by shipyards, superstition and the deep pull of Puget Sound. With wit and reverence, she conjures the ghosts, rumors and quiet legends that give Bremerton its soul—challenging what outsiders think they know. In this episode of Power of Place, we journey from childhood bowling alleys and Navy base neighborhoods to shadowy tunnels beneath the city—some mythical, some real. Deena shares chilling tales passed down by her Irish grandmother and introduces us to “Shrimpy,” a long-forgotten cryptid uncovered in a vintage science fiction zine. She even recounts the true story of a man who raised a lion in his backyard. We also meet iconic figures who passed through this unlikely harbor—Mother Love Bone frontman Andrew Wood, music legend Quincy Jones and even L. Ron Hubbard, whose brief stint in Bremerton left strange echoes of its own. Part hometown love letter, part ghost-lit walking tour, and part invitation to look again—this episode reveals how the most meaningful places are often the most misunderstood. "I always felt slightly out of place in all of my travels. I did not feel like I belonged on that beach in San Diego. I did not feel like I belonged in the city in Washington DC. The place where I felt like I belonged was…where I get to go home and see my family. And that was truly where I felt like I belonged." ~Deena Taylor

On the 58th Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & special guest, Brad Rusthoven from the Slamfest Podcast, review the 1990 debut album from Mother Love Bone, "Apple." Mother Love Bone has legendary status amongst grunge fans. The band was formed in Seattle from another legendary early grunge band, Green River. The band was led by charismatic frontman and main songwriter, Andrew Wood. Guitarist Stone Gossard of Green River and latter Pearl Jam on rhythm and lead guitar and Bruce Fairweather on lead and rhythm guitar as well. Jeff Ament previously of Green River and later of Pearl Jam fame on bass and Greg Gilmore on drums. The album was a mixture of alt rock, glam metal and future grunge. Hard hitting lyrics which also showed a lighter and more fun side of the "Seattle Sound." Mother Love Bone was one of the earliest Seattle bands to be destined for greatness with their debut album coming on a major label. However, Andrew Wood's death from heroin overdose on March 19, 1990 was tragic end of this upcoming band. The album was released a few months later on July 19, 1990. A tribute album/band, Temple Of The Dog further created the legend of Mother Love Bone as did the breakout of Pearl Jam shortly thereafter. As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the album cover against the previous albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew. This was Tom's pick. Rage Against the Machine recorded their eponymously named debut album in May-June of 1992 and released it in November 1992.  The Los Angeles-based group consisted of Zack de la Rocha on vocals, Tom Morello on guitar, Tim Commerford on bass, and Brad Wilk on drums.  The group was known for their anti-establishment and politically charged lyrics.  Rage Against the Machine combined a lot of genres of music into a single hard-hitting sound.  The influence of hard rock and metal is clear, and elements of rap, funk, hip hop, and punk rock are clearly infused into the sound. This group was not just political in nature, every song is laced with revolutionary rants.  The group draws inspiration from mondern revolutionary groups such as the IRA and the Black Panthers, and is highly critical of the policies of the United States, both foreign and domestic.  RATM's debut album is largely based on their demo tape released a year before, which contained seven of the ten songs appearing on the album.  That demo tape was recorded prior to the group's first live show, and was used as a means to build awareness of the group in the days before their signing with Epic Records. The album was a quick critical success and a slower commercial success.  The group began to really take off on the strength of the single "Killing In the Name," and after their performance at the Lollapaloosa festival in mid 1993.Lynch brings us this high energy album in this week's podcast. BombtrackThe opening track starts with a strong guitar riff, and deals with themes of social injustice and resistance against oppression.    Bullet In the HeadMedia manipulation and control of information are the issues dealt with in this track, which became a staple of the band's live shows.  "Just victims of the in-house drive-by / They say jump, you say how high."Wake UpThis song will be familiar to fans of the 1999 film "The Matrix," as it is used at the conclusion when Neo calls the Matrix announcing he will reveal their existence.  They lyrics are a critique of racism, the CIA and government corruption.Killing In the NameThe big single from the album addresses police brutality and institutional racism.   ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Face to Face by Siouxie & the Banshees (from the motion picture “”)This movie based on the Stephen King novel starring James Caan and Kathy Bates would win Bates an Oscar for Best Actress. STAFF PICKS:Empress of Pop by Insane JaneWayne starts the staff picks with an underrated local Georgia band.  This song is a screed against Sinead O'Conner.  Insane Jane produced two albums, the first called "Each Finger," and the second (which contains this song) entitled "Green Little Pill."Let's Get Rocked by Def LeppardDuring a time when hard rock was on the downswing, it is nice to hear a solid rocker which would have been at home on any of Def Leppard's 80's albums.  Rob's staff pick shows that there was still some solid rock music going on in the midst of the grunge movement.57 Channels (and Nothin' On) by Bruce SpringsteenBruce features a Springsteen song which reflects the proliferation of cable television, but not necessarily good content on the tube.  While Springsteen considers this sone a bit of a "playful misfire," the song did go to number 68 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 6 on the Mainstream Rock charts.Would? by Alice In ChainsLynch closes out the staff picks with a song written as a tribute to Andrew Wood, the late lead singer of Mother Love Bone, who died of a heroin overdose in 1990.  The lyrics deal with the aftermath of rehab and the uncertainty of the future. NOVELTY TRACK:Achy Breaky Heart by Billy Ray CyrusLong before his daughter began her career in "Hannah Montana," Billy Ray Cyrus was all over the charts with this cheesy country song. Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament are two of the Seattle scene's most foundational musicians from the 80's and 90's. Stone and Jeff started playing together in 1984 as members of Green River, which eventually dissolved, leading singer Mark Arm to form Mudhoney. Later, Jeff played bass and Stone played guitar in Mother Love Bone until their lead singer Andrew Wood died of an overdose just days before their major label debut in March of 1990. Reeling from Andy's death, Jeff and Stone started recording with Soundgarden's Chris Cornell on a side project called Temple Of The Dog that featured vocals from a then unknown singer from San Diego named Eddie Vedder. Later that year, Jeff and Stone asked Eddie to join their new band with guitarist Mike McCready. As Pearl Jam, they released their debut album Ten in August of ‘91—the album went 13 times platinum and charted on Billboard for nearly five years. Since then, Pearl Jam have released 11 more albums and built a die-hard fan base thanks in part to their outstanding live shows. Last week they released their latest album, Dark Matter, which was produced by Andrew Watt, who's recently worked with Miley Cyrus, Iggy Pop, Post Malone and Ozzy Osborne. On today's episode Leah Rose talks to Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament about how Andrew Watt's encyclopedic knowledge of Pearl Jam helped inspire some of their best performances to date. Stone and Jeff also open up about the inner-workings of their professional relationship, and Stone remembers the first time he met Eddie Vedder, who marked the occasion by passing him a hand-written poem. For the 35th anniversary of Mudhoney's first 12-inch record, SUPERFUZZ BIGMUFF, we take a detailed look at how it was made. After Mark Arm met Steve Turner at a show in Seattle, they became fast friends and began playing in multiple bands together. They started Green River with Jeff Ament and Alex Shumway and eventually added Stone Gossard on second guitar. Tensions over the musical direction of the band eventually caused Green River to dissolve with Ament and Gossard going on to form Mother Love Bone and Arm and Turner deciding to form Mudhoney. With Mudhoney, they had a vision for fuzz drenched guitars and blending 60s garage with punk rock. They eventually added Dan Peters on drums and Matt Lukin on bass and had their first practice on New Year's Day in 1988. Bruce Pavitt of Sub Pop offered to pay for some studio time with Jack Endino so he could hear the material they were working on. From those sessions, they released the "Touch Me I'm Sick" single in the summer of 1988. At that point, they went back into the studio with Jack Endino to work on the songs that would become SUPERFUZZ BIGMUFF. In this episode, Mark Arm describes his approach of “vocalizing” rather than singing, and how playing guitar with this band changed how he thought about song arrangements. Steve Turner talks about his discovery of vintage fuzz boxes and how they informed the Mudhoney sound at a time when fuzz pedals were out of fashion. From the early days of Sub Pop to rocking baby blue 60s guitars to Dan Peters' unique drum patterns to Matt Lukin's relief of playing simple songs to Sonic Youth knighting them as the next big thing to a pivotal moment in Seattle music, we'll hear the stories of how the record came together.
