We are back from our break for our SEASON 3 PREMIERE!!! Hey! We've lasted longer than most Netflix shows! To kick off 2024, we are celebrating Criterion Channel's wonderful CAT COLLECTION for our CAT EPISODE! Cats rule the Internet, and this podcast is on the Internet, so kitty cats rule us as well. We pair cannabis with the Czech New Wave weirdness of THE CASSANDRA CAT (1963) and the existential 50s sci-fi dread of THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING MAN (1957) from CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON director Jack Arnold and legendary author Richard Matheson. We start the episode by discussing Jodie Foster's thoughts on Gen Z and Philena's love of SALTBURN (with some thoughts on its mid-00s nostalgia subtext). We also ask Greg just how much Mickey Mouse porn he's created since STEAMBOAT WILLIE went public domain on January 1st, and dive into the BARBIE adapted screenplay controversy. You also get Bob's thoughtful audio essay on the life and career of the true star of THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING MAN, Oragey, the marmalade tabby cat and two-time Patsy Award winner (the animal Oscars). Co-hosts: Bob Calhoun, Cory Sklar, Philena Franklin and Greg Franklin Music: OMFYS Theme Song by Chaki the Funk Wizard "Wash 'n' Dry (There's a Cat in the Dryer)" by The Loudmouths, courtesy of Loudmouth Beth Allen. Thanks Beth!!!! "Bageshri" by Aditya Varma; "Colony" by TrackTribe; and "George's Lament - Go By Ocean" by Ryan McCaffrey via YouTube Audio Library. It's a big week for the Dukes! One of Xbox's most significant acquisitions in the last half decade is Obsidian Entertainment. They are a extremely talented studio who has been consistently worked over by every publisher they have worked alongside in some way, shape, or form and they now with Microsoft's pockets backing them up they will aim to make a big splash with Avowed. While it has long been described as "Obsidian's Skyrim," we were never 100% sure... until now. Joining us to discuss a recent huge leak about Avowed is IGN's Ryan McCaffrey and the timing couldn't be better. Beyond that, we dive into PlayStation's recent insistence on reaching tens and hundreds of millions of gamers. Will they take Xbox's pathway to reach that number or is there something else they have in mind? That plus 20th Anniversary predictions, the pressing discussion on how long a $60 should be, and much more! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Show #511 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 27th June 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. Hello to new EXECUTIVE PRODUCER ROBIN TANNER Welcome to heatwave Europe. Where it's currently too hot to drive fast in Germany. 3 days left to buy you Tesla and get the current Federal Tax Credit: "The federal government provides a tax credit of $7,500 to buyers for the first 200,000 electric vehicles sold by each company. After a manufacturer sells that first tranche, the tax credit drops by half for cars sold over the next six months — then by half again for another six months before disappearing entirely." TESLA'S SECRET BATTERY LAB There have been multiple clues to why Tesla is going their own route on battery cell production, without their long time partner Panasonic. Firstly if you go way back, look at Panasonic making positive noises about their plans with Toyota and Elon saying Panasonic hadn't hit capacity for Tesla. Generally when relationships are rock solid, people don't wash their dirty laundry in public. Then there have been more obvious things - a little while ago I tweeted the current jobs page on Tesla.com which was looking for people with experience in cell production logistics, and most recently it was Elon and JB exchanging badly-disguised giggles on stage when talking their plans. But all this has been widely reported by many websites and podcast like Ryan McCaffrey and Rob Mauerer's Tesla Daily for a while now. And today from CNBC: ""Tesla is developing the means to manufacture its own battery cells, according to five current and recent employees, something that the electric vehicle maker has relied on Panasonic to do since the companies signed an extensive partnership deal in 2014. Tesla employees conduct some of their battery cell manufacturing research at a “skunkworks lab” at the company’s Kato Road facility, a few minutes from its car plant in Fremont, California. Employees in Tesla’s battery R&D teams are now focused on designing and prototyping advanced lithium ion battery cells, as well as new equipment and processes that could allow Tesla to produce cells in high volumes, employees and former employees said." https://www.cnbc.com/2019/06/26/tesla-secret-lab-building-battery-cells-to-reduce-panasonic-dependency.html TESLA TO EXPAND IN UKRAINE AND EASTERN EUROPE "Ukraine is now being considered as another Eastern European country Tesla Inc. plans to expand into as it seeks to establish itself in more geographical markets." reports IB TImes: "With Tesla entrenched in Western Europe, the only direction left to go to is east. Tesla is finally expanding towards Eastern Europe in response to pleas from the few Tesla owners in this region. It’s already known Tesla will first expand into the Czech Republic." https://www.ibtimes.com/tesla-expand-ukraine-eastern-europe-says-musk-2803317 BMW SAYS DIESELS WILL STILL BE AROUND FOR AT LEAST 20 YEARS Earlier this week I told you about the BMW electric plans, but just to recap: "At this week’s #NEXTGen event held in Munich, BMW unveiled the rather intriguing Vision M Next concept to signal what could turn into a production hybrid sports coupe with 600 horsepower. It would be one of the many electrified models planned by the Bavarians as the company has set a new objective to have 25 electrified cars on sale by 2023, with more than half of these to eschew the combustion engine altogether. A plug-in hybrid model from the BMW M division has already been confirmed, with a fully electric M car slated to arrive after the middle of the next decade." according to Motor1. https://www.motor1.com/news/356878/bmw-says-diesels-survive-20-years/ E-BIKE OR E-SCOOTER? "It has the silhouette of a mountain bike, but instead of pedals it has platforms that can take you up to 45 km / h! A zero-emission proposal that we have tried in preview in the center of Prague" reports InsideEVs Italia: "Technically it has been defined as a "crossover of individual micro-mobility ", but in reality Klement is something different. It is not an e-bike or even an e-scooter or even a hoverboard even if it shares some logic. by tilting the platforms forward it accelerates, while backwards it decelerates and, by the way, the front hydraulic brake system is equipped with ABS . And if you are wondering if the braking power is not excessive, the answer is "absolutely not" given the performances that are achieved. The two lithium batteries, each with 52 cells , have a total capacity of 1.25kWh and ensure an autonomy of 62 km " CAR MAKERS VS. THE OIL AND GAS INDUSTRY "GM, like a fleet of other car manufacturers, is seeking the extension of a tax break that has for a decade helped sustain the sale of cars that need little to no gasoline to run." reports The Washington Post today: "This has triggered an intense lobbying battle with oil and natural gas companies, which supply the fuel that runs the internal-combustion engines that dominate American roadways. Derrick Morgan, senior vice president of the American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers, said he has “met with dozens and dozens” of lawmakers to highlight the high cost of the tax break. Proponents of the credit argue that the oil industry has received similarly sized tax breaks." https://www.washingtonpost.com/climate-environment/2019/06/25/lobbying-battle-electric-vehicle-tax-credit-its-car-makers-vs-oil-gas-industry HOW THE 710 HP ELECTRIC 5 SERIES DEVELOPMENT CAR WORKS From David Tracy at Jalopnik who gives us more details on the BMW test BEV "BMW calls it “Lucy.” It’s 710 horsepower, 848 lb-ft, triple-electric-motor, one-off sedan that the automaker says can do 0-62 mph in 2.8 seconds. Lucy’s being used to develop future electric vehicles, and after getting a ride in this modified 5 Series, I can tell you that the thing is an absolute monster. [It's] a G30 BMW 5 Series which had its floor modified to fit a 45 kWh battery, and its internal combustion engine replaced by three electric motors. Up front, though, the power electronics are integrated into a roughly 220-pound (100 kilogram) cast aluminum case that houses a motor and gearbox in what BMW dubs its “fifth-generation drive unit,” also called “HEAT.” Cooling the 200 kW HEAT up front—a drive unit design also found on the upcoming iX3 crossover—is both water and oil, and BMW claims the setup has a maintenance-free target of over 186,000 miles (300,000 kilometers)." https://jalopnik.com/i-rode-in-bmws-absurd-710-hp-electric-5-series-developm-1835820250 GE’S 12 MEGAWATT HALIADE-X OFFSHORE WIND TURBINE DESTINED FOR TESTING IN THE UK "GE Renewable Energy announced this week that its 12 megawatt (MW) Haliade-X offshore wind turbine will head to the United Kingdom as part of an advanced technology testing program at the Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult’s site in Blyth." says CleanTechnica: "GE Renewable Energy’s 12 MW Haliade-X behemoth is set to be the largest wind turbine in the world when it begins shipping in 2021, and will measure in at 260 meters in height and boast a 220-meter rotor, capable of generating enough clean electricity for 16,000 households all on its own." “We want to bring the most powerful offshore wind turbine to the world’s largest offshore wind market and contribute with our technology to support the UK’s Offshore Wind Sector Deal goal (30 GW by 2030)" - John Lavelle, President & CEO of GE’s Offshore Wind business. https://cleantechnica.com/2019/06/26/ges-12-megawatt-haliade-x-offshore-wind-turbine-destined-for-testing-in-the-uk/ AKASOL ENTERS NORTH AMERICAN MARKET WITH NEW PRODUCTION FACILITY With almost 30 years’ experience in battery systems technology, AKASOL develops and manufactures high-performance lithium-ion battery systems for buses, commercial vehicles, trains, industrial vehicles and the marine sector. E3 Speculation time! Next week the most video game news of the year comes out courtesy of Los Angeles' very own Staples Center and we talk a bit about what we will see/want to see from the various attendees. Of course it wouldn't be an official episode if we weren't talking about a train wreck of some sort, and thankfully Ryan McCaffrey of IGN provided an interview with Todd Howard about Fallout 76. All that and more on episode 10!

Show #490 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 3rd June 2019. VW ID. R SETS EV LAP RECORD AT THE NÜRBURGRING-NORDSCHLEIFE Volkswagen Motorsport on Twitter: "6:05.336 minutes! New electric lap record by the Volkswagen ID.R on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife. Another milestone in electro-mobility." 2nd fastest lap of the circuit, EVER. Clips com said: "Romain Dumas, a race car driver and Porsche factory driver, set the lap record in the I.D. R after setting the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb record last year using the same car. However, for the Nürburgring, Volkswagen had to modify the vehicle to conquer the iconic track. While Volkswagen kept the same twin motor and battery set-up used during its record-breaking Pikes Peak run, the automaker did a lot of work to maximize the vehicle’s downforce and acceleration. To achieve its top speed faster, Volkswagen changed the energy management system." https://www.motor1.com/news/352745/volkswagen-id-r-nurburgring-record/ TESLA SUPERCHARGER V3 ROLLOUT Tesla’s Version 3 (V3) Superchargers will first begin rolling out in locations used for long-distance travel, according to an update provided by CEO Elon Musk. He additionally revealed during a recent interview on Ride the Lightning, a weekly podcast hosted by Ryan McCaffrey, that first generation Superchargers will also be prioritized for replacement." says Teslarati: "Despite Tesla’s open patents for utilizing its Supercharger technology and declared willingness to allow other manufacturers to access its network, Musk said that he hasn’t yet been contacted yet about sharing its facilities and technology. On the topic of developing its Supercharger Network, Tesla’s CEO also explained that the company tries to stay ahead of demand and avoid congestion, but empty Supercharger stations are not in the company’s best interest, either. Also, business permits can slow down expansion efforts despite Tesla’s best efforts to meet its customers’ charging needs. Overall, it’s a balancing act between congestion and freedom to travel." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-supercharger-v3-rollout-long-distance-stations/ MERCEDES EQE ELECTRIC SEDAN DUE 2022 TO RIVAL TESLA MODEL S "The recently launched EQC is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes down to Mercedes’ new “EQ” family of pure electric vehicles. The three-pointed star has already previewed an entry-level car in the form of the EQA compact hatchback and also a people-mover with the EQV. We also know for a fact that a pure electric version of the GLB compact SUV will arrive in 2021 with the EQB moniker, while a flagship EQS sedan is also on the agenda for a release the same year as the S-Class of electric cars." reports Motor1.com: " Mercedes is also working on an EQE, which according to Autocar was mentioned in a document released by the Chinese Ministry of Information and Technology. Developed under the “V295” codename, the EQE will allegedly be shorter than the conventionally powered E-Class Sedan while offering space inside the cabin similar to the S-Class." https://www.motor1.com/news/352668/mercedes-eqe-sedan-2022-launch/ NEW TESLA ROADSTER IMAGES EMERGE "Tesla's design center in Hawthorne, California is where the design magic takes place for Tesla vehicles, including the upcoming, new Tesla Roadster and the Tesla Semi." says Eric Loveday for InsideEVs.com: "For a recent interview of Pawel Pietryka, Creative Manager of User Interface Design at Tesla, conducted by the WorkWithUs website, Tesla released some new images of the Roadster, as well as one with the Tesla Semi and design team, too." https://insideevs.com/news/352262/tesla-roadster-images-new/ RESIDENTIAL BATTERIES ARE FIVE TIMES MORE EXPENSIVE THAN ELECTRIC CAR BATTERIES "A household battery is about five times the cost of an electric car battery measured in installed $/kWh. A household battery is about five times the cost of an electric car battery measured in installed $/kWh." writes reneweconomy.com.au: "Residential batteries should be able to get economies of scale in the factory in the same way that auto batteries do. So even though the absolute cost is always likely to be higher because of inverter and installation costs they both should be moving down the cost curve at a good rate. What we see though is good progress in the auto side of costs but no visible movement in the residential side." https://reneweconomy.com.au/residential-batteries-are-five-times-more-expensive-than-electric-car-batteries-40236/ ELECTRIC VEHICLE SALES UP 70% IN EUROPE "The European passenger plug-in vehicle market scored some 37,000 registrations in April, growing 30% compared to the same period last year, a good performance considering that the overall market is still in the red (-1% in April)." reports CleanTechnica: "In April, fully electric vehicles (BEVs) jumped 70% year over year (YoY), to some 24,000 deliveries, and were responsible for 65% of all plug-in sales in the month." https://cleantechnica.com/2019/06/03/electric-vehicle-sales-up-70-in-europe-april-ev-sales-report/ CHINA HAS WHOLE TOWNS FOCUSED ENTIRELY ON MAKING ELECTRIC CARS "Shunde is one of at least 20 electric-centric versions of Detroit under construction as China goes all-in on a technology projected to sell in record numbers this year. President Xi Jinping wants the nation’s 500 electric car makers to be magnets for ancillary industries as he pushes to build a manufacturing superpower by 2025." says Bloomberg today: "The amount of investment committed to developing these EV towns is a staggering 209 billion yuan -- equal to about $30 billion -- so far, according to Bloomberg calculations based on public announcements. The ridesharing service has teamed up with Portland General Electric to offer free EV charging in the Oregon city's metro area to eligible drivers from July 1st onward." says Engadget: "The free charging comes not long after Lyft outlined plans to go carbon neutral, and fits in with the company's overall hopes of reducing its environmental impact. " https://www.engadget.com/2019/06/01/lyft-free-ev-charging-portland/ VICTORIA POLICE LAUNCH FIRST ALL-ELECTRIC OPERATIONAL VEHICLE "Victoria Police has taken the first steps in what could be the biggest development in police vehicles since their introduction almost 100 years ago, becoming one of the first jurisdictions in the world to put an all-electric vehicle into its operational fleet." I found on the official police website Police.vic.gov.au: "From today, Victoria Police’s Road Policing Command will utilise the all-electric Tesla Model X in highway patrol operational duties, a first for an Australian police organisation. Victoria Police purchased the five-door, five-seat SUV as part of a feasibility study into developing fully integrated electric, IT-based police vehicles for fleet use." https://www.police.vic.gov.au/victoria-police-launch-first-all-electric-operational-vehicle SWISS POLICE PURCHASE FLEET OF 13 HYUNDAI KONA ELECTRIC "The cantonal police of St. Gallen in Switzerland introduced a fleet of 13 Hyundai Kona Electric, out of which five serve in patrol colors and the remaining eight ‘civilian’ models will be used for general services." reports insideEvs: "According to Hyundai, the Kona Electric was the only model that fulfilled the requirements of cantonal police" https://insideevs.com/news/352495/swiss-police-hyundai-kona-electric/ Question of the Week. Show #455 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 26th April 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. BYD TO BUILD 4TH ELECTRIC-CAR PLANT FOR $1.5BN "Leading Chinese electric-vehicle maker BYD plans to spend 10 billion yuan ($1.5 billion) to build its fourth plant for passenger cars." according to Nikkei.com: "The automaker signed an agreement Thursday with the government of the eastern city of Changzhou to produce electric vehicles and key components there. The new site will have an annual capacity of 400,000 autos. Details on when the factory will break ground or the operational start date were not disclosed. BYD controls a fifth of China's electric-vehicle market, the largest in the world. The automaker, which does not disclose its production capacity for electric cars, sold about 250,000 of them last year." https://asia.nikkei.com/Spotlight/Electric-cars-in-China/BYD-to-build-4th-electric-car-plant-for-1.5bn COLORADO WANTS TO FINE GAS-POWERED DRIVERS WHO PARK AT EV CHARGING STATIONS "ICEing, when a fossil-fuel-burning internal-combustion-engined vehicle parks in a spot designated for electric charging, can be an act of passive-aggressive evil or an unintentional act of basic necessity. Either way, it can make already more complicated EV ownership a pain, and a new bill in Colorado wants to permanently put an end to it. Perpetrators would be ordered to pay a fine." says Autoblog today "The matter at hand is keeping charging stations in public parking lots open for electric vehicles or plug-in hybrid vehicles that need to use them. This includes gas-powered vehicles or battery-powered vehicles that are not actively charging, and results in a fine of $150 with a $32 surcharge. There is no mention of towing in the bill." https://www.autoblog.com/2019/04/26/colorado-fine-ev-parking-spots/ TESLA GIGAFACTORY 3 SET TO SMASH FACTORY CONSTRUCTION RECORD "If you're not yet familiar with Weibo, it's one of the most popular social media networks in China. It's also a place where Tesla has previously posted important information. The website just put out an article claiming that the Tesla Gigafactory 3 is on course to demolish all prior construction records." says Steven Loveday for InsideEVs.com: "Tesla China has already changed a vegetable field into a factory in just 108 days (less than four months). in the past it took other companies in the area a minimum of 17 months to complete a structure comparable to the Tesla Shanghai Gigafactory. While Tesla held its official groundbreaking ceremony on January 7, 2019, construction was already underway in December 2018. If the company can work to get the project functional anytime soon (and well before May 2020, which is way ahead of what's planned), then it will smash factory construction records by a number of months." https://insideevs.com/news/346731/tesla-gigafactory-3-record-construction/?utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=RSS-all- TESLA SUPERCHARGERS V2 WILL ACTUALLY OFFER 150 KW POWER OUTPUT Staying with InsideEVs: "According to Electrek, a Tesla spokesperson said that the upgrade of V2 Superchargers will enable charging at up to 150 kW, which is 5 kW more than the previously announced upgrade to 145 kW. Originally, the Superchargers were rated at 120 kW, so the final increase will be 30 kW or 25% to 150 kW. As we understand, Tesla is unlocking the full potential of currently installed Superchargers after years of utilization, which proved it's possible and safe." As for On Route Warmup, Tesla said :"New Supercharging infrastructure isn’t the only way we are improving our customers’ charging experience. Beginning this week, Tesla is rolling out a new feature called On-Route Battery Warmup. Now, whenever you navigate to a Supercharger station, your vehicle will intelligently heat the battery to ensure you arrive at the optimal temperature to charge, reducing average charge times for owners by 25%."" https://insideevs.com/news/346709/tesla-superchargers-v2-150-kw-power/?utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=RSS-all- PANASONIC MAY UPGRADE JAPAN PLANT TO MAKE ADVANCED TESLA BATTERIES "Panasonic Corp may upgrade one of its battery plants in Japan to produce advanced-format battery cells for Tesla Inc if needed by the U.S. electric vehicle (EV) maker, a person familiar with the matter told Reuters on Thursday." reports Reuters today: "Panasonic, currently the exclusive battery cell supplier for Tesla, produces cells for the EV maker at their joint plant in the U.S. state of Nevada - the so-called Gigafactory - as well as at two plants in Japan. The Japanese plants handle cylindrical lithium-ion “18650” cells, used to power Tesla’s Model S and Model X vehicles, whereas the Nevada plant produces the newer, higher-energy density “2170” cells for the mass-market Model 3 sedan. The Japanese production lines would only need minor changes to switch to 2170 cells from the 18650, said the person, who declined to be identified as the matter was private." https://www.reuters.com/article/us-tesla-panasonic/panasonic-may-upgrade-japan-plant-to-make-advanced-tesla-batteries-source-idUSKCN1S1087 TESLA’S NEXT-GEN ROADSTER WILL EXCEED 1,000 KM OF BATTERY RANGE "When Elon Musk unveiled the next-generation Tesla Roadster back in November 2017, he shocked the electric car community by revealing that the all-electric supercar has a range of 620 miles per charge. That’s 1,000 kilometers between charges. The figures are pretty much insane, even by today’s standards." according to Simon at teslarati: "There are now indications that the next-generation Tesla Roadster will go even farther in between charges. Elon Musk mentioned this on Twitter, stating that the range of the upcoming vehicle will be “above 1,000 km.” Musk was responding to Ride the Lightning podcast host Ryan McCaffrey then, who was inquiring if the efficiencies recently introduced to the Model S and X will make it to the all-electric supercar." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-next-gen-roadster-battery-update-range-supercars/ TESLA SEMI PROTOTYPES WORKS 'AMAZINGLY WELL,' PRODUCTION DELAYED "The two Tesla Semi prototypes, unveiled in 2017, were from time to time seen in California or even in many other states doing test runs or simply helping moving stuff (most recently also spotted delivering Tesla Model 3 cars to customers). Elon Musk said that the electric trucks were "working amazingly well," but that's not enough for the Semi to enter production just. Tesla Automotive President Jerome Guillen said" according to InsideEvs.com today: "The production was originally planned from late 2019, but now as Tesla again is struggling with losses, the market launch was postponed until 2020." https://insideevs.com/news/346746/tesla-semi-prototype-amazingly-production-delayed/ VOLKSWAGEN I.D. R SPIED PREPPING FOR NÜRBURGRING RECORD RUN "The Volkswagen I.D. R is preparing for an all-out assault on the Nürburgring Nordschleife to set a new lap record for an electric vehicle. It needs to beat the Nio EP9's time of 6:45.90 minutes. These spy shots and brief video catches some of the testing for the attempt." according to Christopher Smith for Motor1.com: "Volkswagen did extensive computer simulations ahead of putting the car on the track. These real-world runs are for figuring out the suspension setup and finding the ideal tire compound." https://www.motor1.com/news/346706/volkswagen-id-r-nurburgring-spied/ FUELL’S NEW BIKES LAUNCH TODAY "Fuell’s new electric bikes, the Flow and the Fluid, officially launch today. The Fluid is their electric bicycle, available as the Fluid 1 (Class 1, 20 mph assist) or 1S (Class 3, 28mph) via website Indiegogo. The bikes start at $2299 with the 30% discount for the Indiegogo campaign." reports ElectricBikeAction:"Those looking for a motorcycle might like FUELL’s Flow e-motorcycle, now available for pre-order. Two versions are available: 11Kw (regulated as 125cc) and 35kW. The former starts at $10,995 and may be eligible for lower licensing requirements, the latter at $11,995." https://electricbikeaction.com/fuells-new-bikes-launch-today/ COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Thursday 12th July edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport. MINI ELECTRIC LOOKS ALMOST READY Let's talk about the BMW Mini! I had a petrol one for a year in 2008, black, petrol bags of fun even not the Cooper variant. Around that time before I was interested in EVs there was the original Mini E, it was a pilot program and is now discontinued. I'd have another Mini tomorrow as they're great for British roads, small enough to park and big enough for long journeys. So fast forward 10 years and I'm excited about the Mini EV. Carscoops says: "Our sneaky shutterbugs have caught the prototype (both inside and out) undergoing testing out in the wild. The prototype was also spied plugged in to the mains in a dedicated EV charging/parking spot. And the grille is all covered up, suggesting that there’s no internal-combustion engine inside. So unlike the Countryman PHEV, this prototype clearly isn’t a hybrid." Carscoops has 14 pics of the mini in yellow swirly camoflouage and I'll put a link in the show notes so you can see, but they do have just one of the inside. The dash has black cloth covering it, another sign they're getting close. There are three extra screens of test equipment, one that looks like a computer monitor on a large box on the passenger seat with two smaller screens about the size of an iPad mini stuck to the dash. In the footwells of the passenger side are a mass of wires. And how about this, you know on a bus or coach or train, you see those metal hammers often behind glass, with a sign which says "in case of emergency, break glass and smash window to escape"? I can just see one of those taped to the drivers door next to the handle...so are the windows either locked up or are the electric windows disabled? Either way I think it's a sign they're getting closer to production. Meanwhile, India Times reports: "BMW Group and the biggest Chinese SUV brand, Great Wall Motor, announced a partnership Tuesday to produce electric MINI vehicles in China as global automakers ramp up development under pressure from Beijing." Auto brands in China are required to make electric vehicles at least 10 percent of their sales starting next year or buy credits from competitors that exceed their quotas. Later, they face pressure to raise those sales in order to satisfy fuel efficiency requirements that increase annually. The last I heard, Western markets will have the Mini EV made here in the UK in Oxford but given the disastrous process of Brexit and trying to untangle British manufacturing from a tariff free customs union, we're really worried that car markers will find it both easier and cheaper to move production to the European Union. Leaving the EU is currently looking very bad for the auto industry in particular. https://www.carscoops.com/2018/07/mini-electric-looks-almost-ready-plug-ev-market/#lg=1&slide=13 TESLA Q2 VOLUMES ALMOST EQUAL TO JAGUAR The market intelligence company AID has been tracking Tesla sales vs Jaguar: "Tesla is already snapping at the heels of Jaguar. The question now is, as AIDs segment observers have put it most topically, based on Teslas latest sales surge it is not if Tesla will outsell Jaguar on the global prestige sector sales scene, but how soon?" They say:" Figures compiled by AID every month reveal that this second quarter, thanks in large measure to the long-expected but belated sales bounce from Teslas all-new Model 3 in its domestic US backyard, worldwide sales of Tesla skyrocketed to 40,740 units, according to Tesla. In a world were almost everything is relative, that directly compares to the only slightly higher 44,124 worldwide Jaguar sales during the same second quarter." So as I saw on Kyle Field from Clean Technica say today on Twitter, lazy headline writers might have to stop using the phrase Tesla Killer, maybe they need to start calling Elon Musk #JaguarKiller The thing I would like to add is the unknown of the I-PACE sales which Q3 will include. http://www.eagleaid.com/AID-Newsletter-preorder-1813preview-d-Tesla-already-hot-on-Jaguars-heels.htm MUSK GOES TO CHINA, BUT IT IS TOO LATE FOR TESLA I know I'm a simpleton who thinks out loud on a wildly unpopular podcast, but I do get confused. Jim Collins at Forbes seems to think Tesla has missed the boat to sell cars in China. Jim says "It Is Too Late For Tesla To Ride The Chinese EV Boom". Let see what Jim says in this Forbes article: "Tesla's huge head start in the Western markets for high-end BEVs simply does not exist in China. As evidenced by the rash of senior executive departures in recent months, Elon Musk seems to like to do things on his own. But the Chinese market, which has flourished through so many East-West partnerships, is a very different animal, and Tesla simply does not have the capital to compete there." He seems to conclude that because they're dominant in the U.S. they should be dominant in China. I don't think I've ever heard Elon or Tesla say that. Just that they need to build a Gigafactory on every continent in order to make the kind of cars, at the kind of prices, which local people desire and can afford. It's weird, the headline bears little relevance to the article. Has Tesla missed the boat as they say? New Energy Vehicle sales are on target to double, it's a market in massive growth. Unlike in the U.S. where they literally had to CREATE a market for cars, there's an exploding one in China, so that head start which apparently they can't be successful without contradicts the facts that when Tesla launch there wasn't even a race. Let alone a head start. How is it "too late" for Tesla? https://www.forbes.com/sites/jimcollins/2018/07/11/mr-musk-goes-to-china-but-it-is-far-too-late-for-tesla-to-ride-the-chinese-ev-boom/#4fdbaab57a01 ELECTRIC CARS ARE THE FUTURE. HERE'S WHY YOU SHOULD BE AN EARLY ADOPTER Huffington Post say you should be an early adopter, and not just of cars. But of electric bikes too. "Another reason to get on the EV hype early? The chance to try a whole other way of transport. Step up: electric motorbikes. Richard Jordan, director of Super Soco, supplies 22 motorcycle dealers with his brand, which has been dubbed the ’Tesla of motorbikes.′ “Our bikes are legally the same as a 50cc motorbike, so they’re light, nimble and nippy through traffic – the ideal commuting machine. Cost per mile is tiny – around 1p – so commuting into London costs under 10p, compared with a travelcard cost of around £7 per day [based on a weekly card]. The battery is removable, so can be charged from the wall at work, or at home.” https://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/electric-cars-are-the-future-heres-why-you-should-be-an-early-adopter_uk_5b337308e4b0cb56051dca58 TESLA HAS 100 MODEL 3 PERFORMANCE CARS FOR TEST DRIVES Elon Musk has tweeted about the Model 3s available for test drives: "Should be very soon. We’ve already made around 100 Model 3 Performance cars for test drives in stores." On last week’s edition of Ride The Lightning with Ryan McCaffrey he was speculating if they would rather you took a base model or Performance model for a test, which would be best for customers, so he tweeted Elon and that was the response. Looks like they've gone down the avenue of letting people rive the P3D and hoping, if they’d planned on a base model, to up sell them. That makes sense, basic business practice is to try and add value to a customer for a price. All that Anti-selling looks over, remember when Elon would tweet Model 3 reservation holders and say they should be buying a Model S?! By the way I've been playing too much with the configurator now it's opened up to everyone - i'm thinking white multi-coat paint with white interior is mine. TESLA REGISTERS MORE THAN 6,000 NEW MODEL 3 DUAL MOTOR AWD VINS Simon Alvarez at Teslarati, who incidentally got a retweet from Elon recently, has been tracking VIN numbers too by keeping an eye on the Twitter use @Model3VINs: "Tesla has registered a large batch of 6,032 new Model 3 VINs recently, with almost all of them corresponding to the Dual Motor AWD variant of the compact electric car. The new vehicle identification filings come at a time when Tesla is actively pushing its deliveries for the Model 3. This recent filing stands as yet another sign that Tesla is well on its way to sustaining its production rate of 5,000 Model 3 per week this third quarter" TESLA PICKUP TIMES ARE THE BOTTLENECK With so many people to get a Model 3 out to, Fred at Electrek has obtained an email to customers where Tesla are moving from making handover a one-hour hoopla, where your car is uncovered from a silk cloth draped over it, to a 5 minute quickie. The email says: "Learn about your Model 3: You’ll be driving home in as little as 5 minutes from your arrival, so please review the following resources below before your appointment until you are confident and ready to drive off: Watch Model 3 Tutorial Videos Review Model 3 Owner’s Manual Visit your local Tesla Showroom for any additional questions Sign & Drive Pickup Appointment Check In Paperwork Signing 5 minute Vehicle Handoff in which we will show you the essentials to enjoy your drive home: Charging Bundle Key Access Vehicle Start/Stop Park/Reverse/Neutral/Drive Tesla has produced 9 short videos to show different features of the Model 3 in preparation for this program." This was inevitable in some way you can't spend an hour making a song & dance over every buyers. Not when you have 5,000 cars to hand over, and 5,000 next week, and 5,000 the week after! You get my drift. I imagine the Model S and Model X buyers still get a more premium treatment. It’s Saturday 9th June 2018 and this is your EV News Daily. Good morning, good afternoon and good evening! Wherever you're listening around the world, a very warm welcome from London, UK. Here is today’s news about electric cars and the future of transport. My name is Martyn Lee and I go through every EV article online so you don’t have to. #FullyChargedLIVE Day 1! Good morning if you’re listening to this and you’re going. THE FIRST ALL-ELECTRIC PORSCHE: NAME REVEALED I loved the name of the first electric Porsche. The Porsche Mission E. Great...they're in a mission to electrify. But alas that's not the name. The official Porsche YouTube just released a video, not much speech but it sounds like this... ...it ends on the caption Soul, Electrified. "News of Porsche developing its gorgeous Mission E concept into an all-electric sports car lineup has been very exciting, at least up until this point. According to a presentation by the CEO, the production version will unfortunately be called the “Taycan.” says Jalopnic. "The name was announced at Porsche’s 70th anniversary celebrations today by CEO Oliver Blume. According to Reuters, Porsche claims the “Taycan” name means “lively, young horse” and is meant to be a play on the symbolism of Porsche’s coat of arms. It sounds silly, though, doesn’t it?" TESLA SAYS THE MODEL 3 BODY LINE IS NOW 95% AUTOMATED Electrek has picked out the highlights from Tom Randall at Bloomberg writing about a rare, and frankly surprising, invitation to look around the Model 3 Production lines: "Tesla invited Bloomberg to take a look at the Model 3 production line in Fremont after the most recent production shutdown to add the new line." “Tesla says the Model 3 body line is now 95 percent automated, including the transfer, loading, and welding of parts.” Fred Lambert said: “They also took a look at Tesla’s quality control for the Model 3, which includes 47 robots scanning the Model 3 bodies body line at 1,900 different points to match them to design specs with a precision of 0.15 millimeters". Bloomberg also said about the quality control: “During the final test drives on the track, sound recorders measure squeaks, rattles and wind and road noise that a test driver might miss. All of this data is stored with each car’s unique Vehicle Identification Number, or VIN, so service centers can trace any issue back to a root cause in the factory. The idea is that Tesla will be able to improve its cars, even after they’re in a customer’s driveway.” https://electrek.co/2018/06/08/tesla-model-3-body-line/ ELON MUSK TEASES 'WAY MORE ADVANCED' AUTOPILOT FEATURES Elon Musk tweeted a reply to Ryan McCaffrey, saying: "No plans for aluminum pedals. Adds too much production complexity. Model 3 will def have summon, which will get way more advanced for S & X w HW2 Autopilot & all Model 3 cars." "Tesla is making big changes to Autopilot. On Friday, CEO Elon Musk revealed that the company plans to update its semi-autonomous driving system to bring the “summon” feature to the Tesla Model 3. The update is set to come as part of a broader push to make Tesla’s cars run smoother." according to Inverse.com: "In response to a question from Tesla fan Ryan McCaffrey, Musk wrote on Twitter that he plans to bring “summon” to the company’s newest car, which entered production in July 2017. This feature, already present on the Model S and Model X and introduced in the fall of 2015, enables the car to open a garage, enter, close the door, park and switch off. It can also do the reverse when you need to leave again. Tesla vehicles manufactured after October 2016 use the same setup of cameras, sensors, ultrasonic radar and GPS to enable these features, with an Nvidia Drive PX 2 on board capable of supporting over-the-air software updates." https://www.inverse.com/article/45722-tesla-model-3-elon-musk-teases-way-more-advanced-autopilot-features 2018 MAY US PLUG-IN ELECTRIC CAR SALES CHARTED: MARKET UP 48% Mark Kane at InsideEVs has been summarising last months EV sales in the U.S.: "May 2018 became the fourth best month for plug-in electric car sales in the U.S. with healthy growth of 48%." Last month here in the UK we were over 5%, but market share is just 1.5%. "Tesla Model 3 set in May an all-time sales record for any plug-in car in the U.S. – 6,250 (estimated by IEVs)." says Mark. https://insideevs.com/2018-may-us-plug-in-electric-car-sales-charted-market-up-48/ FISKER TWEETS Henrik Fisker @FiskerOfficial !Looking forward to doing some more testing this weekend on the #FiskerEMotion #SolidState #Batteries #testing #electric #EVs #electricvehicle #Fisker #tech #technology #environment" CHARGEWAY POSTS FIRST CHARGING SIGNS GreenCarReports has a really interesting article on signage for charge stations: "Charging has been a key obstacle to electric carbuyers, and it may not just be the number of public stations available. With three different "levels" of charging, and multiple charging speeds and connector types within each of those, it can be confusing for the average driver to know what type of chargers their car can use and what will give them the fastest charge their car can handle." says GreenCarReports: "Green indicates a "standard" J1772 connector along with its CCS Combo fast-charge counterpart. (A car with a CCS fast-charge connector takes a standard J1772 plug for slower charges.) Blue is for CHAdeMO DC fast charge connectors. (Cars that have a CHAdeMO fast-charge port also have a separate J1772 port for everyday charges.) Red is only for Teslas, which use their own type of connector. https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1117084_chargeway-posts-first-signs-helping-electric-car-drivers-sort-out-charging-levels I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Tuesday 29th May 2018 and this is your EV News Daily. Good morning, good afternoon and good evening! Wherever you're listening around the world, a very warm welcome from London, UK. Here is today’s news about electric cars and the future of transport. My name is Martyn Lee and I go through every EV article online so you don’t have to. We'll start with a follow up to yesterday's story about the hypermile'd Model 3, the attempt by Sean Mitchell and his hypermiling partner Erik Strait. After covering 606.2miles, using 66kWh at 110Wh/mile they were able to relax and once again dream of driving a car over 30mph. However there's a sting in the tail of this story. After trying to charge the Model 3 overnight at a Supercharger, it was refusing to take any charge. The last I heard it was being towed to a Service Centre where I imagine Model 3 experts will be waiting for it. As much as Tesla love the good publicity they'll be keen to understand what's happened here. It seems like pulling 66kWh hours isn't much from a 74/75 kWh pack. Also, the car was hired from Turo. EVS NOW COMPETITIVE, SAYS LEASEPLAN'S CAR COST INDEX Cost comparison for EVs with ICE cars has been a moving target, some say 2020 and some say 2025. But everyone agrees sales of EVs will take off once they are cost competitive. However maybe that day is...today! "In several European countries, electric vehicles (EVs) are now cost competitive with traditional powertrains. The TCO gap is rapidly narrowing in Belgium and the UK, while EVs are already cheaper in Norway and the Netherlands. That is the conclusion of LeasePlan's most recent Car Cost Index (CCI)." says Frank Jacobs for FleetEurope: "The CCI is a comprehensive, annual analysis of the Total Cost of Ownership for a small to medium-sized car (B & C segment) in 21 countries" which includes taxes, insurance, fuel, maintenance and the all-important depreciation. "TCO of EVs also varies greatly, from a low of €597 in Hungary to a high of €986 in Italy. Norway is the only country where TCO for an EV (€670) is lower than for a petrol (€731) or diesel (€722) car." TESLA SEMI SPIED BETWEEN FREMONT AND PALO ALTO Time for another sighting of the Tesla Semi which is putting in some miles, not only for testing, but also doing some work as well according to the rumours. During a talk in the Netherlands, Tesla VP of Truck programs Jerome Guillen said: "Tesla will be the first customer for its own truck. So we will use our own trucks to carry cargo in the US between our different facilities. We have (an) assembly factory in California, we have a battery factory in Nevada, so we’ll use our truck to carry things in between" Teslarati say "The latest image of the Tesla Semi was shared by Model 3 owner and r/TeslaMotors subreddit member u/AMG76, who stated that the picture was taken just this past weekend." DIESEL IS ‘FINISHED’ IN EUROPE AMID PUSH FOR ELECTRIC CARS EV's could be getting an easier ride in Europe partly because sales of diesels are in freefall and people are looking for alternatives. "European commissioner Elzbieta Bienkowska said the EU has had a “breakthrough moment” since Germany-based Volkswagen AG admitted in 2015 that it fitted diesel engines with software to cheat U.S. checks on smog-causing discharges of nitrogen oxides. This deeply affected “the emotions in society toward emissions and cleaner cars,” she said.“Diesel cars are finished,” Bienkowska said in a May 24 interview in her ninth-floor Brussels office. “I think in several years they will completely disappear. This is the technology of the past.” VOLKSWAGEN OPENING THREE NEW FACTORIES IN CHINA FOR EV BOOM "Volkswagen AG is opening three new factories in China with its local partner FAW Group" according to Bloomberg: "Two of the new facilities will be in Tianjin and Foshan, VW said in an emailed statement, adding it opened one in Qingdao on Monday. The plants will focus on bringing more sport-utility and electric vehicles for local production, the fastest growing segments of China’s auto market." "The Qingdao factory opened with the introduction of the new Bora on the MQB platform and will produce battery systems" BMW WIRELESS CHARGING AVAILABLE STARTING TODAY "Today marks the market launch of BMW’s highly anticipated wireless charging solution for iPerformance cars. BMW has been talking about it for over a year, in anticipation of the launch of their new BMW 530e iPerformance model, the first production car available with wireless charging." says Nico at BMW BLog: "The system is now available for orders and allows customers to recharge their 530e – and future PHEV models – by simply parking the car over a so-called base pad. The BMW Wireless Charging option can be ordered now as a leasing-option for the BMW 530e iPerformance. The product offer starts with Germany, subsequently followed by the UK, the US, Japan and China." ELON MUSK JUST REVEALED NEW TESLA MODEL 3 PERFORMANCE EDITION DETAILS "In response to Tesla aficionado Ryan McCaffrey, Musk confirmed on Twitter that the car will come with sport-level brakes, coupled with red calipers" according to Inverse "New brakes aren’t the only cosmetic changes coming to the car. It will be the first variant to offer a white interior alongside the standard black, as well as a carbon fiber spoiler and 20-inch performance wheels instead of the “Aero” wheels offered on the base models." SK INNOVATION BEGINS CONSTRUCTION OF 7.5 GWH BATTERY PLANT IN HUNGARY And finally, InsideEVs reports: "SK Innovation held a groundbreaking ceremony for its first European lithium-ion battery factory in Hungary." How long does it take to build a battery factory? Well even though the build starts now, it won't produce cells until early in 2020. "The batteries to be produced in SK Battery Hungary will be third-generation EV batteries, which give an EV 500km range with one charge. The company had announced in September, 2017 that it would start mass-producing of the world’s first medium-to-large NCM (nickel:cobalt:manganese) pouches. SK Battery Hungary expects to start mass-producing and supplying the batteries from early 2020. Once all the production lines are installed, the factory’s production capacity will reach 7.5 GWh per year." I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Wednesday 23rd May 2018. First a word for any EV groups meeting up soon. Like the group organised by Mark Goudie (Pron: Gordy) who organises regular EV meet ups with other EV owners here in the UK, so hello to the Northwest England Owners group on Facebook, and all the information you share and conversation you have. Any other groups listening? Let me know I’ll give you a shout. Mark also opened up the Tezla / Tessla debate – I think I just say what comes naturally BUT apologies to those who insist of Tessla, if I ever say Tezla I’m sorry. From now on I promise to try harder at Tessla. STUDY PREDICTS INCREASE IN ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLES Starting with a study by Statista, reported by RideApart.com and then ono InsideEVs, which is like a russian nested doll of credit I'm giving there, they are forecasting global e-bike sales will reach approximately 40 million units sometime in 2023. That's a huge number, and it starts to make more sense when you realise 35million of the 40million will be in China. But even so, 5 million electric bikes is a big number for North America and Europe. They say: "Unsurprisingly, one of the strongest forces in the entire e-market equation is urban (and suburban) areas. An increasing amount of electric two-wheeler sales are coming from scoot-sharing services like BMW’s DriveNow program, or the San Francisco-based Scoot Network e-scooter sharing offering. Both of these services, in addition to buying large fleets of bikes, also serve as a sort of motorized, two-wheeled test-drive, introducing the non-riding public to life on two-wheels. The number of EV startups risen sharply for the last couple years as well, and signs point to that trend only intensifying." https://insideevs.com/study-predicts-huge-increase-in-electric-motorcycle-sales-by-2023/?utm_source=bambu&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=industry RIVIAN TO DEBUT 800-HP ELECTRIC TRUCK AT LA AUTOSHOW Detriot-based electric car startup Rivian Automotive is getting ready to take the stage later this year at the Los Angeles Autoshow and debut the company’s first electric truck. “according to Christian Prenzler for Teslarati. "Rivian is also creating an 800-HP version of the vehicle capable of more than 450 miles of range, making it an SUV having the longest all-electric range on the market" These will serve the popular American consumer truck segment which we don't have in the UK or Europe to such a large extent. It's easy to quote numbers on something not yet made, but they say 0-60 in 2.8 seconds. “It’s stiffer than a supercar,” said CEO RJ Scaringe in speaking with Engadget. “There are only a few cars in the world that are going to be as fast as ours, and we have a large five-passenger truck.” The price they say is in the $50K to $90K region which seems way too cheap for all that performance. Rivian have their factory, the old Mitsubishi plant in Illinois, which they bought in January 2017. https://www.teslarati.com/rivian-800-hp-electric-truck-la-autoshow/ ADVANCED E-BUSES HIT ROADS QUICKER THAN EVS The latest long-term forecast from Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF) shows sales of electric vehicles (EVs), increasing from a record 1.1 million worldwide last year to 11 million in 2025, and then surging 30million by 2030 which cost-parity with combustion is achieved. China will lead this transition, with sales there accounting for almost 50% of the global EV market in 2025 and 39% in 2030. The advance of e-buses will be even more rapid than for electric cars, according to BNEF’s analysis. It shows electric buses in almost all charging configurations having a lower total cost of ownership than conventional municipal buses by 2019. There are already over 300,000 e-buses on the road in China. https://www.windpowerengineering.com/business-news-projects/advanced-e-buses-to-hit-the-roads-quicker-than-electric-vehicles/ CHINA CUTS CAR TARIFFS "China will cut tariffs on most imported cars to 15 percent from July 1, the finance ministry said on Tuesday following a thaw in trade tensions with the United States" says the UK's Daily Mail. Whilst Bloomberg say: "For Tesla, a tariff cut will provide a boon until they set up local production. Tesla has been working with Shanghai’s government since last year to explore assembling cars in China. China saying that it will allow foreign new-energy vehicle makers to fully own auto factories as early as this year removed a primary hurdle for Elon Musk." https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-05-22/china-is-said-to-cut-car-import-duty-in-boost-for-lexus-bmw http://www.dailymail.co.uk/wires/afp/article-5756777/China-says-cut-auto-import-tariffs-July-1.html MODEL 3 PERFORMANCE COULD END UP BEING EVEN QUICKER Staying with Tesla and it seems Ryan McCaffrey from Ride The Lightning Tesla Podcast has a direct line to Elon - which some superfans of both would probably compare to that old saying about The Pope having a direct line to God. I'm joking. Mostly. However Ryan said on Twitter: It’s probably not *this* simple with manufacturing, but wouldn’t the robot just reach into the red caliper pile on the assembly line for the cars tagged as Performance? In other words, it’s just a different part (in practice if not technically so), not a different process." So he's talking there about the red brake parts seen on other performance models. To which Elon replied: "not promising anything, but we *might* be able to increase Model 3 Performance power output a little" However I think many buyers will be happy to stump up $54,000 for a very quick dual motor Model 3, rather than $78,000 (without Autopilot) for a stupidly quick Model 3. There will be those who always want the fastest, but basic dual motor would do me more than fine. https://electrek.co/2018/05/22/tesla-model-3-performance-version-higher-power-output-teases-elon-musk/ DS3 DESTINED FOR PARIS MOTOR SHOW Maybe DS are feeling like they're being left out of the EV party because Rachel Burgess in Autocar point out: "DS will reveal the electric DS3 Crossback compact SUV, a rival to the Audi Q2, at the Paris motor show this October ahead of its launch in 2019. The EV variant of the new car, which will run alongside more traditional powertrains, will be available from launch and will offer a range of more than 124 miles on each charge. The urban-focused car is likely to have a 50kWh battery pack. DS product boss Eric Apode told Autocar that "DS has to lead [the electric] innovation" within the PSA Group. "This is also because of pricing. It [electric technology] has to start with premium brands because the prices will be high," he said. "Then, as the pricing decreases, it can go to the other brands." https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/electric-ds-3-crossback-be-revealed-2018-paris-motor-show MODEL 3 BRAKE ISSUES WILL BE SORTED SOON Finally on Tesla, Elon Musk has now admitted there was a braking issue with the Model 3. The braking issue was first pointed out by Consumer Reports. He said it can be fixed with a firmware update that the electric car maker will be rolling out in a few days. He said in a reply to Electrek: "Looks like this can be fixed with a firmware update. Will be rolling that out in a few days. With further refinement, we can improve braking distance beyond initial specs. Tesla won’t stop until Model 3 has better braking than any remotely comparable car." https://www.cnbc.com/2018/05/22/teslas-musk-admits-model-3-braking-issue-promises-fix.html BP INVESTS $20 MILLION IN FLASH BATTERIES CNBC report on more oil money flowing into electrons: "BP said its venture capital arm was investing in Tel Aviv-based StoreDot as it looks to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in its operations. StoreDot develops so-called "flash batteries," lithium-ion batteries that it says can charge electric vehicles in a matter of minutes." "Ultra-fast charging is at the heart of BP's electrification strategy," Tufan Erginbilgic, chief executive of BP's downstream business, said in a statement on Tuesday. "StoreDot's technology shows real potential for car batteries that can charge in the same time it takes to fill a gas tank." The range on their batteries is said to be 300miles but the product won't even start to be commercialised until 2019. https://www.cnbc.com/2018/05/22/bp-invests-in-israeli-battery-startup-storedot.html NISSAN: VEHICLE TO GRID SERVICES WILL NOT DRAIN EV BATTERIES Finally Nissan Europe chief Gareth Dunsmore has responded to suggestions that V2G, which is being led in many ways by Nissan because of the CHAdeMO connector, and he says: "“It is not draining the battery, it is using the battery to balance the grid. It uses the battery, but it also puts energy into the battery; it is going up and down rather than draining. Draining the battery is not where the value is for the energy company or the customer.” Accoring to The Energyst: Mike Kerslake, UK technical manager for Chinese battery firm BYD, said V2G services for those customers may require a change of service model in terms of battery ownership and management. “Perhaps the vehicle owner doesn’t own the battery, but it is [instead] leased from an energy resources company, who also gets value from the vehicle to grid capability,” said Kerslake. “So there is quite a potential change in the way it works.” https://theenergyst.com/nissan-vehicle-grid-services-will-not-drain-ev-batteries/ I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. IGN'S Ryan McCaffrey Calls Out Microsoft Phil Spencer Over The Quality Of XBOX Eclusives
I met my pal Ryan McCaffrey when he started working at IGN in 2012, and we quickly became good friends. I wanted to invite him on Fireside Chats not only to discuss our days together at the world's biggest video game website, but to dive deep into his love of dogs, and my fledgling love of pups, too. His two Boxers -- the sadly deceased Maggie and the new baby Daisy -- have filled his life with love and joy, as has Lola in my life. That's what this podcast hinges on, and I hope you enjoy the conversation.
Saturday 3rd March 2018. DUAL MOTOR DELIGHT Firstly some news in brief, and this a tweet coming from Ride The Lightning podcasts Ryan McCaffrey, or DMC Ryan on twitter…the first dual motor Tesla Model 3 seen on the road: ”I spotted #8370 in the wild this weekend in San Francisco. It’s red with 19″ Sport wheels, if you’re curious.” GTE BECOMES THREE …but first, where do you stand on Plug In Hybrids? I think they’re the gateway drug of the next 5 years to get people used to driving on electric. They provide the safety net for those who worry that, for the one long trip they do each year, somehow the tabloid newspapers are right and batteries don’t go very far. Others say that if you’re going to plug a car in, just plug in a pure battery electric car. One of the most effective engineering solutions is the way VW’s drivetrain works so well in the Golf GTE and Passat GTE. All electric when you want, up to 80mph, and it seamlessly works with a petrol motor when for either range or power. Well now the third GTE has been spotted and it’s the ever popular crossover SUV size car, of a Tiguan. It’s been spied testing without camouflage and with the GTE badges on so it’s almost ready. Due to be unveiled in April, production starting later this year in Germany with deliveries before the year end. The Tiguan will probably do 0-60 in that 8 second range if it uses the same 10kWh-ish battery and powertrain from the Passat. https://www.carscoops.com/2018/03/vw-tiguan-gte-scooped-plenty-plug-hybrid-badging/ EGOLF SALES RECORDS Meanwhile, in the bit of VW which makes rather larger battery packs, the new eGolf is going down well in Western Europe. According the InsideEVs it was the best selling BEV in Western Europe in January 2018 with 1,864 registered. That’s only a few more than the Zoe and i3 but a win’s a win! The 36kWh battery is nothing to write home about but on recent cold weather test video on YouTube it fared the same as the new LEAF – both of which were beaten by the ridiculously efficient IONIQ with it’s teeny weeny battery. However Renault will point out that the Zoe is production constrained and they could have sold more – well, they should have built more! https://insideevs.com/vw-e-golf-was-1-selling-bev-in-western-europe-in-january/ EVgo RAPID PLANS In North America EVgo is cutting the cost of public charging and they say “drastically simplifying”. Public charging seems to be a bit of a battlefront with a lot activity around chargepoint makers, installers and even the businesses who often foot the costs of having them installed. EVgo is launching a simple Pay As You Go option alongside a $9.99 / month membership, although there’s a caveat to say what you’ll pay depends on where you are. Membership pricing is by the minute and costs $0.15 to $0.21 per minute. As they’re rapid chargers you’re limited to 60 minutes off peak and 45 minutes during daytime. https://www.evgo.com/ NEW MEGA MEGA CHAdeMO Staying with charging and CHAdeMo could be getting even faster. It’s called CHAdeMO 2.0 and increases the theoretical voltage to 1000volts, and 400kW of power. You may have heard about the recent wave of new 150kW chargers due to be installed this year, or even the 350kW CCS chargers VW’s Porsche are installing at every dealership to promote the Mission-E, or even the new rapid charging networks arriving in Europe. It’s the ever-present chicken and egg debate – there aren’t any cars to use the spec yet but when someone like Jaguar launch the I-PACE yesterday with 100kW charging, you see all those internet haters pointing out chargers don’t get that powerful. With almost 20,000 CHAdeMO chargers worldwide, used by the 775,000 cars sold with a compatible plug, it’s great to see investment in future charging needs. https://www.chademo.com/ MERCEDES RELEASE EQC PICS Finally, anything you can do, I can do better. Toady has seen a slew of articles about the Mercedes-Benz EQC electric SUV, the day after the release of the I-PACE got everyone’s attention. It could just be a coincidence, but it’s interesting timing for Merc to release new shots and details of the testing program. I’ll put a link in the podcast description and on the blog at evnewsdaily.com if you want to read “Five questions for Michael Kelz, Chief Engineer EQC”. https://www.motor1.com/news/234658/mercedes-releases-first-image-eqc/ Thank you for listening today, I hope you've enjoyed it. We'd love to spread the word about electric cars so please do share this with at least one person who might be interested. Just a reminder you can listen to all of our previous podcasts on iTunes, Google Play for your Android devices, and most recently now on Spotify’s Podcast section. Whilst you’re there why not subscribe for free and then you get them automatically. It would really mean a lot if you could take 2mins to leave a quick review on iTunes which will help us spread the word to a wider audience about electric cars. IGN's Mitch Dyer, Marty Sliva, and Destin Legarie welcome Brian "BRAP BRAP" Altano to Podcast Unlocked this week, in an episode free of Ryan McCaffrey's typical order. Structure is out the window. Sanity, lost. Sense? None. Profanity? Prevalent. On the agenda this week, the Locksmiths discuss whether or not Marty O'Donnell's departure from Bungie means much for Destiny, and where we'd like to see him go. After that, we wonder about Tales From the Borderlands -- the core is great, but do we really want to play it? In this week's nightmarish trainwreck of a podcast, Ryan McCaffrey, Destin Legarie, Mitch Dyer, and Marty "Tardy" Sliva show you why Podcast Unlocked is the #1 Xbox podcast. GTA V and awkward banter dominate the beginning of this week's show, which ravels out of control as the team gets into this week's news and releases. HEADS UP: For whatever reason, this awesome episode was sabotaged by the mysterious ghosts that plague the IGN podcast room. No static this time, fortunately -- it just sounds like we're inhaling a whole lot of helium while hanging out and chatting.
