Donna Burke explains that her mum gave birth to seven children of which there are two sets of twins. Donna is the first born twin to a boy and the second set of twins was also boy/girl. She basically in the middle of the seven children. To add to Donna's many talents, she is also the long time English announcer on the Shinkansen bullet train, from Tokyo to Osaka. She refers to herself as an entrepreneur, which she says she inherited from her dad. In addition to lending her voice to many genres, she also has a business called "Royal Flush" Japan Toilet Sound Maker. There's a Japanese cultural love affair with sound effects that mask any noises one may make while busy on the toilet! The video games that she's featured on, including her singing songs and character roles in video games are Metal Gear Solid, Silent Hill 2 and 3.My guest's mum had a very rough childhood. Marg's mother, Donna's maternal grandmother, was an alcoholic. Her second husband was a pedophile. Marg and her older sister were in and out of orphanages, treated horribly while they were there. So the two sisters figured out that they could pretend that their life was better than it actually was. The two sisters felt so much shame about their broken family, parent's divorced, etc so they decided it was a good idea to dream up a different past. This was a coping mechanism which seemed to help. When Marg was 14-15 years old, her biological father eventually let Marg live with him once he saw the horrific conditions she had been living in. Donna loved to sing and really tried very hard to get every opportunity to perform when she was a teen. Unfortunately her mom, busy with all the kids, didn't really realize how passionate Donna was and how committed she was to fulfilling her dreams of being a performer. Come 1996, Donna realized it was time to get away from Australia and ventured on to live in Japan. She is still there today with a budding career -using her voice for singing monster hits from legendary video games and doing voice overs, including the job as the english announcer on one of Japan's bullet trains.Marg has been to Tokyo to visit her daughter and loves spending time in Tokyo. Marg also was thrown into the spotlight because of the notoriety of her daughter's voice as the announcer on the Shinkansen bullet train. The video interview went viral and that was Marg's first experience with real fame.Though Donna's mom had a dark childhood for many, many years, she still instilled in her children that it okay and important "to be kind to yourself and it's okay to love yourself "Donna Burke has a wonderful sense of humor, though at times her childhood may have been a bit chaotic, her sense of humor staid intact. I so enjoyed speaking with her about her mom Marg. One of Marg's favorite songs that Donna sings is "Sins of the Father.""Sins of the Father" is a song from the game Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. It was first featured in the E3 2013 trailer. The lyrics were written by Ludvig Forssell, performed by Donna Burke and composed by Akihiro Honda.Donna also sings:"Metal Gear V:The Phantom Painhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QNvD-oNNQso#:~:text=Metal%20Gear%20V%3A%20The%20Phantom,the%20Father%20%2D%20Donna%20Burke%20%2D%20YouTube Donna Burke, the voice of Angela in "Silent Hill 2" wrote a song about her character. As the holiday season ramps up, we here at Scanline are prepared for a yearly ritual: playing all the games that we feel like we should have an opinion on before we record the Gimmick Awards, our yearly Game of the Year (and more than game) awards. That makes this the last stop of us just chatting normal games before we dizzy ourselves with our obligations as critics. To that end, Jen has been mourning the loss of a rival in F1 2023, Six has been modding Metal Gears on Steam Deck, and Kyrie wanted to see what's so remade about the Super Mario RPG Remake. Plus, we've all got thoughts on the 25th Anniversary Update for Half-Life. In chronological order, our music is 8bit23 by Koichi Morita, The 23 Enigma by Ian & Ethan Livingstone featuring Julie Seechuk from F1 23, the Steam Deck startup sound, Nuclear by Mike Oldfield from Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, Calling to the Night by Natasha Farrow with lyrics by Nobuko Toda, composed by Akihiro Honda, and arranged by Norihiko Hibino from Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops, In The Garden by Yoko Shimamura from Super Mario RPG Remake, Hazardous Environments by Kelly Bailey from Half-Life, and then a reprise of 8bit23 by Koichi Morita. You can find us on Cohost and Twitter at @jen-and-aster and @jbu3 for Jen respectively, @KyriePage and @KyrieAPage for Kyrie respectively, and @sixdettmar for Six on both.
This almost two hour video, is my strange attempt at understanding how the 1998 video game, METAL GEAR SOLID, for PlayStation (and later for Microsoft Windows) managed to change the landscape on video game industry. Indeed all of the METAL GEAR series caused an impact on the medium, that we still feel to this day.. The video which I'm reacting at, explains this fundamental question... The METAL GEAR series is famous for being the first to enter the "stealth" category as well as its long cinematic scenes, complex plots and its exploration of the nature of politics, wars, censorship, genetic engineering, artificial intelligence, loyalty, reality, subjective vs. universal "truths" and many other philosophical themes, in addition to frequently breaking down the fourth wall. The first game in the Metal Gear series was released in 1987 for the MSX2, with an inferior conversion for the NES. In 1990, its sequel, Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, was released. With the emergence of the fifth generation of consoles, Hideo Kojima managed to use the potential of the PlayStation to create Metal Gear Solid with exceptional 3D graphics (for the time) and voiceovers in all languages. After MGS came its sequels Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty for Playstation 2, Xbox and PC, and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater for PlayStation 2. A PlayStation 3 version of the series was released in June 12, 2008, by Kojima Productions, called Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, a spin-off with Raiden, was developed for the Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and Windows platforms. Its sequel Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain was released on September 1, 2015, being the eighth canonical title in the Metal Gear series and the sixth within its fictional chronology. The game serves as a sequel to Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, but its story predates the events of the original Metal Gear game. It was one of the first games, if not the first, to emphasize progressing without being detected by enemies, avoiding as much as possible to confront them. Many of the things that would become hallmarks of the series already appear in Solid Snake's first mission, such as the radio codec for communication with superiors, to clarify doubts about the mission, or even the cardboard box . A version of this same game was made for the NES in 1988, however, with 69 lines of text less and some changes in the story. A sequel, Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, was released in 1990 for MSX2 computers, but only on the Japanese market. Metal Gear 2 had important additions to the series, as well as a much more elaborate story full of revelations. After that, the Metal Gear series only returned in 1998, under the name of Metal Gear Solid, for the Sony PlayStation, adapting the gameplay of the first two games to a 3D environment. While the first two games were only relatively successful, Metal Gear Solid was a bestseller, with over 15 million copies worldwide. Several games tried to copy its formula, which made the Metal Gear brand one of the flagships of the Konami company. Metal Gear Solid had two sequels for the PlayStation 2: Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty in 2001 and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater in 2004, each one further enhancing gameplay and telling more of the history of the Metal Gear universe. In March 2006, Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence was released, with 2 discs, containing the same game as Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, but with a new camera, which allows full and free vision to the player. Also added more features and online mode, where a player can play against others over the Internet. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is the fourth game in the "Solid" series --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/manuel-velez61/message

What if video games could teach you how to be successful in life? Jon Harrison is a gamer, family man, and man of God. But he is also committed to helping people succeed. But what if we could learn keys to being successful from video games? Join Logan as he sits down with Jon Harrison to discuss his TEDx Talk, his book, Mastering the Game, and a little about his upbringing in a Presbyterian home. Keep Up w/ Jon Harrison Twitter Blog YouTube Book Housekeeping (4:22) Metroid Dread Review Metroid Dread Playthrough What Have We Been Playing (5:11) Jon dives in to Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain for the first time, alongside Kirby's Adventure on the NES to offset the dark, gritty tones of MGS. Logan boots up the indie Metroidvania, Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights. Topic (14:44) Here at TRG, we believe that everything has a worldview, including video games. From these worldviews, we're engaging with truths and teachings but the question is: do they line up with Scripture? Jon takes a similar approach to video games in that they do indeed teach us something. But how can what we learn be used for success in the workplace and life in general? Jon's message is so ingrained into his creativity and personality that he is committed to this through his blog and book, Mastering The Game. This is a fascinating conversation that shows video games have a place in today's society for the greater good. Jon has also had an amazing upbringing and we get into discussing religion and faith. Evan chats with David while catching a Tentacool. David and Evan are back for a regularly scheduled Ani-Gamers Podcast to talk about Metal Gear Solid (both 4 and 5), Mob Psycho 100, and Space Patrol Luluco, but more importantly: the whole world has gone crazy for Pokémon Go and our hosts are no exception. Topics include: sakuga/cours sympathizers, real-life Team Rocket, and Studio Trigger performance art. Also featuring David’s nephew making a lot of noise in the background. I did my best to mask a lot of the background noise, but David’s audio is still a little wonky sometimes. David just finished Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, and Evan is currently playing Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. Both hosts are playing way too much Pokémon Go. Evan and David finished Space Patrol Luluco. They also discuss more projects from Studio TRIGGER, including Inferno Cop, Little Witch Academia, Sex & Violence with Machspeed, Kill la Kill, and Kiznaiver. Evan is watching Mob Psycho 100 in the summer anime season. Twitter: Ani-Gamers, Evan, David Evan hosts the Crunchycast podcast on Crunchyroll and writes for Otaku USA Magazine. Show Notes: * Cody and Jon discuss whether 127 is a prime number (it is) in a moment of ominous foreshadowing * Cody explains how nuclear weapons work (kind of) in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, and the inner workings of Konami’s “worldwide nuclear disarmament” event online * Members of two subreddits, /r/MetalGearPhilanthropy (which Cody mistakenly calls Metal Gear Philosophers throughout the episode) and /r/MetalGearPatriots, are particularly active in vying for disarmament and proliferation, respectively * Cody references “mainstream” pickup of the event, including WIRED and Ars Technica * Jon compares the event to events in massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs) * Meanwhile, in real life, Cody and Jon actually saw each other in the flesh over Thanksgiving! Hear them recap their turkey day weekends, including Cody seeing Jon’s son running around and being hilarious * Hear why Jon is still playing Final Fantasy XIV, and what his latest plans are for his PC gaming life * PC building with Jonathan Martin * Cody and Jon make a MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT regarding the future of Unqualified Gamers * You will not want to miss next week’s episode, for anything, no matter what * Also on the GonnaGeek Network this week, check out Legends of S.H.I.E.L.D. Jon has a bone to pick with the upcoming downloadable content release schedule for Star Wars Battlefront, and Cody debates with him whether Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is guilty of DLC misdeeds. Show Notes: * Photo credit: Marco Verch via Flickr * Jon recounts the tale of one man’s ridiculous customer service experience with Sony * Cody counter-points with some good customer service experiences he’s had with Sony, which somehow leads to Jon talking about a subscription he has that allows him to listen to old baseball games… which is completely pointless * Jon is not a fan of how difficult it is to unsubscribe from basically anything on the iTunes Store * Jon claims that if you get a “dumb” customer service representative, sometimes you can get totally screwed * Cody posits that stupidity isn’t the only thing that can affect your customer service experience, as many people are great and many people are just kind of terrible people * Jon and Cody argue about whether they’re even arguing at this point in the customer service conversation * They transition into downloadable content (DLC) discussion mode, starting with a reference to the atrocious DLC in Plants vs. Zombies 2: Garden Warfare * Jon gives a primer on the Battlefield video game series, since Star Wars Battlefront is essentially a Battlefield game and the third game in the Star Wars: Battlefront series * Jon explains the $50 Season Pass available to order pre-release, and why he thinks that’s too expensive and splits the player base too dramatically * Is the initial offering for the game too thin at $60 for a game that’s been in development for a very long time? Cody doesn’t think it is, and discusses with Jon * Cody discusses his history with the Call of Duty DLC map packs and how dissatisfied he was with the maps * Jon compares Destiny’s latest expansions to the price of the season pass to highlight its absurdity to him, and Cody argues why the content is “worth it” to some * In Cody’s world, it’s just as offensive to have spent $20 on a game like Gone Home as it is to spend fifty bucks on some DLC, then reminisces on his multiplayer days playing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and 3 with his friends * Jon concedes that he is probably “just old” and seamlessly transitions into a discussion on in-app / in-game purchases, which seem a little more frightening * Cody helps enable the most seamless transition basically ever * Cody explains the online multiplayer in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, including Forward Operating Bases (FOBs), your staff, R&D, and offense/defense when infiltrating bases in multiplayer mode * Jon is a fan… up until Cody starts talking about how you can buy insurance, using real-world money, to “insure” your virtual characters from being captured by online adversaries * The verdict is out regarding exactly whom is the target of the game...

Catch up with Cody and Jon as they talk life milestones, Devil in the White City, Hearthstone, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, and Final Fantasy: Type-0 HD. Photo credit: Diavolomezzo via Flickr Show Notes: * Cody talks microphones, acoustics, and what kind of podcast you can expect to hear * Jon chastises Cody for not making enough Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney jokes when he interviewed Sam Castree III, Ace Attorney on the podcast * Cody rants about how Radiolab ripped off his story about the Cryptolocker virus; Jon tries to debunk his theory of being ripped off directly, but Cody uses the power of the lottery and math to thwart his efforts * Jon tells an endless, boring, rambling story about why he hasn’t been on the podcast lately, and somehow manages to do so while clicking his mouse the entire time * Congratulations to Mister Manager, since Jon thinks he’s a big deal now because he sold his house (hear how it happened!) * If you’ve ever wanted to learn about listing a house, buying or selling a house, or any other miscellaneous real estate questions… then this is definitely not the podcast for you. But Jon talks in painstaking detail about those things anyway * Fun fact about Walt Disney and his dad, which serves as a seamless transition into Cody talking about Devil in the White City, an excellent book * Cody explains that reading Devil in the White City is infinitely more fun and rewarding than playing Hearthstone in literally every way * Jon claims that the Arena is still “kind of” fun, but Cody insists that Hearthstone generally just really sucks and is not a game “for him” * Cody gives an update on Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, which he’s now played for a bit over 50 hours * Cody describes the “buddy” system, including D-Horse, Diamond Dog, and Quiet, which is very cool * Cody also discusses the prevalence of side missions and dispatch missions in the context of main story missions * Jon discusses his first impressions of Final Fantasy: Type-0 HD, which Cody had also begun playing before he got MGSV * Jon explains the premise and beginning of the game, and he and Cody discuss how the “tutorial” near the beginning nearly ruined the game for both of them * Cody calls out the voice acting after Jon calls out some inconsistencies in what graphics had increased resolution and what graphics seem to have been forgotten * They discuss pacing in games and how things like the tutorial in this game can really mess up a game * Cody plugs the GonnaGeek Network, specifically All Things Good and Nerdy * Reminder that you can subscribe to Unqualified Gamers on iTunes, and even leave reviews, which we would LOVE for you to do
Cody welcomes Sam Castree III, Ace Attorney, who discusses some fundamental legal needs of video game developers. Hear Sam walk Cody through the process of how a video game developer should select and leverage legal counsel from day one of development. Show Notes: * Sam Castree III, Ace Attorney, talks about how he got into practicing video game law, including an incident with a friend’s free-to-play game being ripped off and listed for sale by another company in Vietnam * Sam briefly touches on the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) and how it applied to the situation * For more information, you can check out Sam’s published paper, Cyber-Plagiarism for Sale!: The Growing Problem of Blatant Copyright Infringement in Online Digital Media Stores * Sam reveals that he was sworn in on Halloween, and Cody reveals why that is perfectly appropriate for Sam, whose trademark for years has been the color orange * Sam discusses word-of-mouth, networking, and other methods of growing a business * Learn the importance of establishing “the basics” when beginning a video game development venture * Background info on “one size fits all” lawyers and why to NOT use them when entering into an entertainment-specific business venture like video game development * Cody asks Sam to walk him through the legal process from square one, beginning with the moment a potential video game developer picks up a dev kit * Sam starts with the importance of defining what type of company you have, e.g. sole proprietorship, limited liability corporation, corporation, partnership, etc. * Sam talks about Lawyers for the Creative Arts (pro bono & low-cost legal help in the Chicago area), which he has worked with in the past * Sam explains independent contractor agreements, why it’s important to have them when someone contributes to your game, and what happens to those agreements after 35 years * On a related note, learn why Superman has been dealing with litigation for decades * Also learn about how different contracts work under different court jurisdictions, and why it’s important to get local legal help * In a rare moment, Cody contributes his expertise by mentioning one good piece of legal advice he’s ever heard: get everything in writing * Sam backs him up and actually explains why this is important * Sam goes into the details of different types of partnerships, such as general partnerships, and when and what kind of partnership may be a good idea * Sam explains the legal benefits and privileges gained from filing for a copyright, including some of the policies surrounding how and when you can do it * What do you do if you accidentally “rip someone off” when making a game? Sam explains! * Why using someone else’s content in your game is definitely a no-no * Cody and Sam talk about overseas litigation, and the reasons why it can be pretty ridiculously difficult to pursue * Sam talks trademarks and how protectable they are * He delves into King Digital’s attempt to trademark “saga” to protect their games like Candy Crush Saga, and why the trademark filing wasn’t quite as strange as everyone initially thought (although it was still pretty bad) * Cody brings up the iDroid from Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, and asks Sam about the “i” prefix as a trademark * Sam also talks about logo usage in games, and what can and can’t get you into trouble, including an interesting situation that is currently being “tested”

Ryan and Mattlegear get stuck on movies again with Turbo Kid, Batman (no-neck edition), Seventh Son, Big Game, Love and Mercy, yet another installment from Ryan's Fast and Furious marathon with Tokyo Drift, the BBC's Grand Theft Houser TV drama ("Gamechangers"), and the recently announced Mega Man movie, but then the video game part of their brain revolts (or is revolting) and they talk about time spent with the Mega Man Legacy Collection, Pac-man 256, Metal Gear Solid V The Phantom Pain of Typing Out the Entire Title, Mad Max, Titanfall, 3DS Street Passing, Super Mario 3D Land, The Swapper, and Evolve.
