For this week's bonus, we're talking about the Starmer / McSweeney government getting outflanked on the left by frothing reactionaries because of their steadfast devotion to water companies being in private hands, and bad. We're also talking about an amazing recent article about the mad boy king septuagenarian pub magnate who loves closing his pubs permanently as punishment for the slightest infraction. Some tracks were recorded by the Kinks in this year which never made it onto an LP release, including their classic single Days (which reached No. 12 in the UK chart in June) and Wonder Boy (which only reached No. 36, in April). This collection of bonus tracks also includes rare recordings made by the Kinks for TV and film: namely Where Did My Spring Go, Til Death Us Do Part and When I Turn Off The Living Room Light. Introducing the Band:Your hosts Scot Bertram (@ScotBertram) and Jeff Blehar (@EsotericCD) are with guest Jay Cost. Jay is the Gerald R. Ford senior non-resident fellow at the American Enterprise Institute and the author of, most recently, James Madison: America's First Politician. Find him on Twitter/X at @Jay__Cost.Jay's Music Pick: The KinksHaven't we done these guys already? We sure did! For the first (and possibly last) time, Political Beats has done something unprecedented and gone back to cover an artist for the second time. Why? Because frankly, our original Kinks take was Episode #7 (we're up to #130 now, seven years later), and we didn't know what we were doing with the format yet, didn't do the discussion justice, and frankly this should have been a two-part episode. So now it is! Jay was great with us back in the day -- except for the part where we had to cut short the discussion because he had to pick up his kids from school -- so we've invited him back to do proper justice to Ray and Dave Davies, eternally warring brothers who fronted a band that started as the most mindlessly brutish of all the British Invasion '60s hitmakers ("You Really Got Me," "All Day And All Of The Night," "Tired Of Waiting For You," "Till The End Of The Day" -- all rockheaded classics) and then rapidly transformed into one of the most curiously intellectual bedsit-room British bands in history, as quintessentially "English" in the late Sixties and Seventies as The Band was effortlessly "American." The music during their early phase (discussed this week -- part two coming soon!) transforms from hitmaking international singles to insular, intensely well-written melodic and lyrical miniatures about English eccentrics and English life -- the sort of music that was destined to fail commercially in its moment but which later became (and remains) the subject of endless musical, emotional, and intellectual fascination. Join us then, as we take a second, far juicier bite at the apple and chronicle these glorious early years of growth for the Kinks, culminating in The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society (1968), an album all about the seductions, perils, and aches of nostalgia. Later on, after this point, the Kinks would reemerge into the world at large, cultivating a massive international (and specifically American) fanbase during the Seventies and Eighties with a very different kind of music. But for now, get ready for stories of session men, insufferably perfect schoolboys, ugly urban tube stations at dusk, and utterly phenomenal cats as we take you back to the mysterious era known as "decline-phase late Sixties Britain" and discuss the last of the good old-fashioned steam-powered bands.

Auf ihrem Album "The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society" sind zwar keine großen Hits, dafür umso mehr spannende Kompositionen. The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society" is the most successful flop of all time." Es geht zurück aufs Dorf in "The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society". __________ Über diese Songs vom Album "The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society" wird im Podcast gesprochen (03:52) – "Animal Farm"(04:29) – "Sitting by the Riverside"(20:30) – "Village Green"(26:40) – "The Village Green Preservation Society"(30:27) – "Monica"(34:21) – "Wicked Annabella"(37:34) – "Walter"(42:43) – "Picture Book" __________ Über diese Songs wird außerdem im Podcast gesprochen (01:32) – "You Really Got Me" von The Kinks(01:39) – "Sunny Afternoon" von The Kinks(18:50) – "Penny Lane" von The Beatles(45:23) – "Warning" von Green Day(45:55) – "Don't Look Back in Anger" von Oasis __________ Shownotes Doku zu The Kinks – "The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z-ragx6CtTI Auftrittsverbot in den USA: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oup7NCcfb10 YouTube-Channel von The Kinks: https://www.youtube.com/@TheKinksMusic __________ Ihr wollt mehr Podcasts wie diesen? Adam Boyd joined the Badass Records Podcast for episode #13, and what a treat it was to have him. We go back some 15ish years to the good, old service industry, a time in which we'd occasionally agree to disagree on this, that, or the other. These alleged debates were -- in my experience -- almost always light-hearted, in the spirit of quality conversation, and often over a post-shift cold one.Adam was always one of my favorite F.o.H. soldiers, and -- though we seldom see one another now -- he remains one of my favorite humans; I suspect his wife and kids feel lucky to have him both a) in their lives, and b) out of the business, as the saying goes. When it came time for calendars and brass tacks, etc., we -- by way of happenstance -- broke a few BRP barriers, in that this conversation not only included more badass records than any of the previous, but it also shattered the existing longest-run-time mark, clocking in at just a smidge over four hours. I imagine the Wednesday morning after our chat to've been a foggy one for Mr. Boyd at the ol' jobby-job, but, hey -- when you're hashing out 15 records -- it's gonna be a minute.Anyway, Adam's list arrived via the text-message machines and included the following albums (in this order):Nirvana's In Utero (1993)This Year's Model (1978) by Elvis Costello & the Attractionsthe infamous London Calling (1979) by The ClashPink Flag (1977) by Wirethe game-changing Loveless (1990) c/o My Bloody ValentineEnter the Wu-Tang (36 chambers) by Wu-Tang Clanthe currently-on-display-behind-Tom-Segura's-chair (2 Bears 1 Cave Podcast) Ready to Die (1994) by The Notorious B.I.G.Prefab Sprout's 1985 record titled Steve McQueenthe 1976 self-titled album by The Modern Lovers, which I accidentally skippedEverybody Knows This is Nowhere (1969), Neil Young & Crazy HorseJoy Division's 1979 release, Unknown PleasuresParis 1919 (1973), John CaleThe Velvet Underground's 1969 self-titled debuta 1968 number called Odyssey & Oracle by The ZombiesEither/Or (1997), Eliott SmithThe Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society (1968), by The KinksMany thanks to Adam for being willing to dust off the ol' communication lines and share his unofficial COVID-19 music project with me, and extra-special thanks for being willing to come sit in my basement and bullshit about it for four hours. Please consider giving our conversation a view or a listen, and please -- if you dig it -- pass it along.copyright disclaimer: I do not own the rights to the intro/outro audio, but -- as per yoozsh -- they're too good not to use. They are samples from 2Pac's "I Ain't Mad At Cha (featuring Danny Boy)" from his 1996 record, All Eyez on Me (c/o) Interscope Records, and "Thank You for Sending Me an Angel" off of the Talking Heads's 1978 release entitled More Songs About Buildings and Food (c/o Sire Records).

Gentle Giant's “Octopus” is one of Marty's favorite records and “hugely influential” to his path as a musician and composer. If not for this album and the friends he made over it, he may have stuck to performing piano – and some of your favorite video games would sound a whole lot different. Matt's pick, the equally English “The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society,” was a critical underdog that's achieved new life as a cult classic in the 50+ years since its release. Matt thinks it's better than The Beatles in some ways. Don't tell him I wrote that here. I wanna make him explain that take on a future episode. Glenn Fosbraey is the Head of English, Creative Writing, and American Studies at The University of Winchester where he specialises in the academic study of song lyrics. His publications include the book Writing Song Lyrics: Creative and Critical approaches (Palgrave MacMillan 2019), chapters 'Manipulation and truth in The Final Cut' in Pink Floyd. A Multi-disciplinary Understanding of a Global Music Brand. (Routledge 2020) and ‘I’m (not) your man’ 'Songs of Leonard Cohen', as well as the upcoming edited collection Misogyny, Toxic Masculinity, and Heteronormativity in Post-2000 Popular Music (Palgrave Macmillan) due later this year.Glenn expresses that when The Kinks released The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society in 1968, it was perhaps the first album to focus on the everyday aspects of the life of the average person in Britain. As far removed as possible from the psychedelic introspection of the biggest selling bands of the time (led, of course, by The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band), ...Village Green delighted in detailing the smaller joys of British life, such as strawberry jam, draught beer, custard pies, and Desperate Dan.Glenn describes that this celebration of every day can be traced across pop music ever since, and one of its biggest supporters, The Smiths, chose their band name as an antithesis to the Spandau Ballets and Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Darks of the music world. As the 21st Century arrived, the every day continued to be documented in popular music, led by Mike Skinner’s creative outlet The Streets. Skinner’s world is a portrait of everyday British life, with Kebab shops, greasy spoon cafes, cans of lager, London underground travel cards, Nike trainers, mobile phone ring tones, and ‘reeking jeans’.Capturing the zeitgeist doesn’t have to involve the big issues of the day: for Glenn, the most effective way of capturing that moment in time is to chart the every day, the mundane, or the banal. Glenn's discussion circles around the importance of banality in pop music, and how it’s the smaller things in life that make song lyrics so important.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/user?u=21685169)

Mark Doyle is a professor of history at Middle Tennessee State University. A native of Oklahoma who now resides in Nashville, he has lived for extended periods in New Orleans, Boston, and Ireland. His latest book is The Kinks: Songs of the Semi-Detached. Mark and Colin talk about the historical and sociological background of the Kinks' golden period in the late 1960s and early 1970s. More specifically, they discuss how the brilliant and multi-faceted Ray Davies, the Kinks' main songwriter and singer, commented on the profound changes going on around him. In the process, he and the Kinks made classic albums such as Something Else, Village Green Preservation Society, Arthur, Lola, and Muswell Hillbillies. Mark and Colin also examine the challenges of doing a different kind of writing, namely, how historians trained in a doctoral program examine a pop culture subject. As Mark sees it, he didn't want to write a typical history of the band. And while interviewing someone in the Kinks would have been fun and exciting, talking to a famous musician won't necessarily add much to your story.   The Kinks were a distinctly British band, but the subjects Ray Davies analyzed--urban renewal, alienation and economic anxiety, the rise of the suburbs, the expansion of the welfare state--were relatable to Americans, too. Ray's songs did not emerge in a vacuum. His art was born amid the changes going on in the postwar world all around him.

The first Roxy Music album brings together a patchwork of inspirations and influences from across the decades. In the second episode of Ghost Echoes, we stroll spontaneously into the movie theatre of the mind and examine a few of them. Here's looking at you, kid. Music and Sound Notes: - All of the Roxy Music tracks heard here for illustrative purposes are from their debut album. They include: “Re-Make/Re-Model”, “Virginia Plain”, “Bitters End”, “Chance Meeting", and “2HB”. - The recording of Rachmaninov's second piano concerto near the start is by an anonymous soloist and symphony orchestra, from Musopen. The excerpt from Brief Encounter itself features a recording of the same concerto by Eileen Joyce with the National Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Muir Matheson. The Noël Coward song heard shortly after is “The Party's Over Now,” from the musical Words and Music. - The segment on pop art features excerpts from Buddy Holly's “Everyday” and David Bowie's “Andy Warhol.” The section about musicians who went to art school features tiny extracts from “All Your Love” by John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers; “Imagine” by John Lennon; “Brown Sugar”, “Some Girls”, and “Honky Tonk Women” all by the Rolling Stones; “Whole Lotta Love” by Led Zeppelin; “Pinball Wizard” by the Who; “Tubular Bells, Part 1” by Mike Oldfield; “Bike” by Pink Floyd; “Layla” by Derek and the Dominos; “The Village Green Preservation Society” by the Kinks; “Seaside Rendezvous” by Queen; “Your Love is King” by Sade; “Common People” by Pulp; “You're So Great” by Blur; “Man-Size” by PJ Harvey; “Paper Planes” by M.I.A.; “Kiss With A Fist” by Florence and the Machine; and “London Calling” by the Clash. - The recording of Wagner's “Ride of the Valkyries” used here is by the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Uwe Mund. The brief excerpt from the start of Das Rheingold is the Staatskapelle Dresden conducted by Marek Janowski, and the horn call from Götterdämmerung is the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra conducted by Riccardo Chailly. - The music that finishes the episode off is from the end of Max Steiner's score for Casablanca. Further reading, watching: - The two main sources for biographical information were Michael Bracewell's Re-Make/Re-Model and Simon Reynolds' Shock and Awe. The Brief Encounter section is loosely inspired by Roland Barthes' essay “Leaving the Movie Theatre” from The Rustle of Language. The list of art school alumni who went on to pop stardom comes from Pretentiousness: Why it Matters by Dan Fox. - The BBC documentary at the beginning of the pop art section is “Pop Goes the Easel,” an episode of Monitor, hosted by Huw Wheldon and directed by the great Ken Russell. The interview clips with Ferry are taken from a Channel Four documentary called This is Tomorrow. - The images in this blog post were the main source for my descriptions of the Roxy Theatre. - Other film and television clips come from Brief Encounter; What's Opera, Doc?; The Wizard of Oz; Casablanca and Now, Voyager.

II of our series, we talk about all the new characters and concepts introduced on Side B of "Village Green" and how the album became so popular after commercially failing upon release (on the same day as the Beatles' White Album, too.) We'll also discuss the Kinks' career after "Village Green," including "Lola," their transition to arena rock, and final show in the mid-90s. It's also possible we'll see a rare Kinks revival by the end of 2019, so I'm sharing details on that as well!

In the two years Ray Davies took to write this album, the Kinks went from global stars to has-beens. By 1968, focus had shifted to Jimi, The Stones, and the Beatles, and there was no place for the twee "Village Green." So how has the album since become so legendary? In this episode, we'll talk about the rocky history of the Kinks, and why they got banned from playing in the U.S. at the peak of the British Invasion. We'll also meet the characters on Side A of "Village Green" and explore the place a bit.

To celebrate the first ever National Album Day we were joined by Dave Davies from The Kinks to look back at 50 years since the release of ‘The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society’ at The John Peel Centre For Creative Arts in Stowmarket. The Kinks are the Village Green Preservation Society wasn’t initially a success upon it’s release, coming along at a time when Jimi Hendrix’s Electric Ladyland, Led Zeppelin’s debut, and the Rolling Stones’ Beggars Banquet were the flavours of the day. Although praised by many critics, it was largely overlooked by the public. However, as years passed, it’s following grew until it become viewed as a masterpiece. For many it is now justly considered Davies’ and The Kinks’ most satisfying album: a creative highpoint matched only by the band’s landmark singles of the period. Read more: classicalbumsundays.com

The Beautiful South - The Rocking Chair @ 898 (1992) [EP] (2017) Dar Williams - Party Generation @ End of the Summer (1997) Jefferson Airplane - Lather @ Crown of Creation (2009) The Kinks - Where Did My Spring Go @ The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society

There was a lot going on in rock n'roll in 1968. The White Album and Electric Ladyladyland (to name just a few) were re-shaping the contours and reach of the genre and things were moving pretty fast. So it was a hell of a head-scratcher when Ray Davies and his merry bunch slowed things right down. Eschewing all that cutting edge modernity for a retreat to the Village Green, with all its traditional quaintness and bucolic serenity, The Kinks lit a pipe, donned tweed elbow patches, and consciously stopped looking forward, instead dreamily turning their minds and guitars to the halcyon days of traditional small town life. A ballsy move that was ill received at the time but has earned this record the reputation as one of the band's, and indeed the era's, finest. Our mate Huey joins us to walk through the town's nooks and crannies, discuss the concepts and themes, the making of and the merits of each track, before tackling the frosty reception it received and what lay in store afterwards for The Kinks.

JUNIOR ASPIRIN RADIO SESSION 20 THE BREXPODDevised, debated, campaigned and voted on by Andy Cooke, Dan Fox & Nathaniel MellorsHaving relocated our production facilities to a heavily fortified and luxury redoubt deep in the Scottish highlands, Junior Aspirin Records presents The Brexpod: a balanced, neutral and wholly unbiased reflection on the misery and hopelessness inflicted on the United Kingdom by the cowardly, venal, xenophobic, meretricious, mendacious, over-privileged turdworms who, on 23rd June 2016, paddled the country up Bullxit creek and left us in a Euromess without so much as a bratwurst or baguette to gnaw on. From the country that brought you sterling classics such as The Restoration, Luddism, Tony Blair, Margaret Thatcher, the invention of the machine gun, and the colonial subjugation of countries across the globe, the Brexpod is a three-hour epic told in broken English, and featuring Cotswold-stone-cold hits including 'Turd on the Run' by The Rolling Stones (feat. Oh you guys. Sometimes I wish I were you. Then I wouldn’t know about some of the “AMAZING” on the fly stuff we occasionally pull, and I would go into listening to the show with even wider eyes (Cause face it, this show is like Jaws/Star Wars circa mid-70’s, albeit wrapped up in all the Beatles albums combined). We were just about out of that damn garage, and then Ryan showed up…let me back up a bit. I picked the record this week, and it’s “The Kinks are The Village Green Preservation Society” by…wait for it…The Kinks (wouldn’t it have been wonderful if I dropped in C and C Music Factory right there?). I love the British Invasion, I think the Beatles were the most confounding and amazing band ever, most of my all time favorite bands and records hail from The British Isles…but somehow the Kinks had mostly fallen off of my radar. And that’s not for lack of people nudging me toward them (looking at you Darin Murphy). Long story short, I finally understood all of the comparisons to Blur- Parklife I’ve heard over the years. Because of a 2am text I had received a few nights before taping, I knew Ryan was a fan of this one. Which is why when I walked into Mark’s garage and Ryan wasn’t there I was all sad-faced and shit. Turns out, if you are playing with your dog and accidentally scratch your cornea in 2 places, and you are in so much pain you have to move the recording of your podcast to the following day cause you have to go to the doctor…not everybody can make the re-schedule the next day. Ryan had to work that night, and nobody bothered to tell me-sad trombone-. Well lucky for us, our guest for the night, Infamous Music Journalist Chad Swiatecki, did a most admirable fill-in. Sadly, Ryan really liked the record and Chad did not, so I regret not having them in the same room. I’m not above throwing meat to the wolves. Buy "Village Green Preservation Society" on Amazon ### A Few Minutes With ### For “A Few Minutes With”, we watched Kip Winger do some logic gymnastics and bass twirling while he struggling with his attraction for a 17 year old (Now a woman of 45 as we point out)…or actually, there’s no struggle, he straight up admits he’s an admirer of underage women in the song. Oh, and then Ryan showed up right as we were all getting in our cars to go home, so we fired the whole thing back up, and did another show in fast forward as a postscript. I have yet to have heard it, but I’m cringing a little because by that time I might have had a few beers… We’re loving all of the discussion with you guys, please keep the comments and messages and e-mails coming! We have yet to include a listener pick for one of our shows, but we will; we talk about it a lot…we’re just waiting for a few to pick from. Is it fair to say I’ll be doing this again in a week. Yes. Hope to see you then,

In this episode, I thank you for putting up with my podcasting learning curve. I'm used to singing into a microphone, but not talking into one. I observe the 22nd anniversary of the death of Freddie Mercury, one of my favorite musicians of all time. He was born Farrokh Bulsara, but chose the best stage name ever. Just like when JFK was assassinated, people remember where they were when they found out Freddie died. I was in Weatherford, Oklahoma, finishing up my degree with classes like bowling and tennis. I was dating a grunge girl. Freddie was one of the first celebrities to die of AIDS. I went over to my best friend, Phil's, apartment, and we listened to Queen and tried to come to terms with the bad news. Queen's Greatest Hits from about 1981 was the first Queen record I bought. It had "Bicycle Race" and "Fat Bottomed Girls" on it, and I was only ten or eleven years old, but I liked that. "Flash" was a huge hit, and I love it. I even try to sing it for you. "The Game" was the first rock record I ever bought, and it changed my life. I also bought "The Long Run" at the same time. My grandma bought them for me at KMart. I bet she thought I was going into a phase. The Eagles were good, but not as good as Queen. "The Game" was the first Queen album to use synthesizers. They always created their futuristic sound just with Brian May's guitar. "Play the Game" is an emotional hammer, followed by the funky "Dragon Attack". "Need You Loving Tonight", "Crazy Little Thing" etc. They all sang except Deacon. "Prime Jive" is sung by the drummer and it rocks! The album ends with some ballads that will knock you in the dirt. I implore you to seek out that album. The next album of theirs I got into was "The Works" with "Radio Gaga" on it. It had some other minor hits like "I Want To Break Free". "It's a Hard Life" sounds just like "Play the Game". There were lots of synths on that album, but not as many as on "Hot Space", which sounds like a sequenced album. I talk about "Life Is Real", which Freddie wrote for John Lennon. I got into "Innuendo" a lot, which was in 1991, the year Freddie died. It had a different sound. Freddie was very sick and almost couldn't sing sometimes. He had a strong will to perform, and it wasn't for money. He could play piano better than Elton John. There are some full length shows on YouTube you should watch. "The Show Must Go On" closed the album, and Freddie was really hurting when he recorded it. In 1988 I got Queen II. It's a very different album, talking about fairies and stuff, like Tolkien. "Ogre Battle" is as complex as Metallica. I bought an import CD that had a pound notes price sticker on it, which made me proud. "Sheer Heart Attack" is a rocker and has a great cover. You should check it out. It's got "Killer Queen" on it and "Now I'm Here", as well as the gay anthem of all time, "Misfire". John Deacon wrote it and played guitar. Freddie sings like an angel and there is much double entendre. Then they did a trio of albums named after Marx Brothers movies. The first two, "A Day at the Races" and "A Night at the Opera" are the finest example of layered rock music ever. I bought a gold plated CD of "Opera". Both of these albums have period pieces like vaudeville on them. British families after the war learned instruments and had family time together playing songs. They didn't watch TV. "Made In Heaven" is the final Queen album. The cover is beautiful and looking at it made me tear up. It features Freddie in front of Lake Geneva. Freddie was dying during the recording, but the song's messages are hopeful. That was Freddie, and I miss him. I speculate whether Freddie's buck teeth contributed to who he became as a performer. Samson had his hair, and Barbara has her nose, and Freddie had his teeth. I saw a picture of him as a child and his teeth were huge. That humbled him. Now kids have too much unearned self-esteem. I used to feel like I was showing off just by wearing sunglasses. Freddie faced down what stared him in the mirror and overcame it as the biggest star on Earth. Next, I observe the 45th anniversary of the Kinks "We Are the Village Green Preservation Society" album, which is a masterpiece. They are the quintessential British band. The album has lots of character studies and role playing inspired by the Beatles. The Village Green is a working class place in the post war era mentioned on multiple albums. The post war era was very influential to British bands like the Stones, the Who, and others. They were very worldly at a young age. All the Kinks albums of the period were loose concept albums. Ray Davies was lamenting the passing of old British traditions on these albums. He was part of the cultural change, but at the same time he was melancholy about it. The album came out in 1968 and was recorded at Pye Studios. Ray produced it. You wouldn't know the songs unless you like the Kinks, but all the songs are good. My website is www.PaperbackRocker.com. For episode 31 of Love That Album I am joined by Ben Eisen of the All Time Top Ten podcast to discuss a highlight album from a champagne year for rock music. By 1967, The Kinks had already released an enviable number of brilliantly crafted singles. Like many other bands from the so-called British Invasion, they had their blues roots (Ray Davies was particularly keen on Big Bill Broonzy), but then went on to explore other musical avenues (though no Dead End Streets – geddit????) “Something Else By The Kinks” was indeed just that. Full of great little character studies and stories, this was the band exploring British life with both affection and a little cynicism. Part psychedelia, part British music hall, this album has its place cemented in history for “Waterloo Sunset” alone. Fortunately, there are many other joys on this record. Dave Davies gets in on the songwriting action too. This album was followed by “Village Green Preservation Society” an album that has garnered more attention. As great as that record is, Ben and I have a lot of affection for “Something Else”, and we discuss why on this latest episode. Eric Reanimator returns to discuss The Soundtrack of Our Lives, “Behind The Music”. Through him, I’ve become a fan, so tune in and become a convert to this great Swedish band. Summer, summer, summertime! I threw this one together at the last minute, but I think I did a pretty good job of capturing the mood of this lazy, hazy, hot July. Random Old Records Podcast #33 drifts by in a dreamy blur of psychedelic moods, shimmering reverb guitar, and loping dance beats, with a mix of new and old tracks. If you're one of those people who are melting in this punishing 100+ degree heatwave rocking the midwest, and just want to sit around in a dark room getting lifted all day, this is the podcast for you!Episode #33 kicks off with the all-time classic opening medley from the debut LP by The Soft Machine, a towering groove filled with stunning drums from Robert Wyatt, screeching organs, and slow-burning instrumental fury, and goes into some screaming garage psych from The Night Beats and Thee Oh Sees, then a Brit-psych style workout from The Paperhead, who put out one of the best LPs of the year on Trouble In Mind a few months back. I've been raving about them ever since, and now I'm SUPER-PUMPED that they're playing a free show at one of the best new venues in Cincinnati, MOTR Pub, on July 27th. If you're anywhere close, come check it out! Also, check out the perfect lo-fi 60s psych vibe of Jeffrey Novak on this episode of Random Old Records. He just so happens to be the producer of The Paperhead LP, and will be guesting on keyboards on their tour. Sweet deal!Elsewhere, you'll hear dreamy electronic-psych tracks from Washed Out, Hype Williams, and Black Moth Super Rainbow, and more chill jams from the likes of Pure X (AWESOME new LP), Seapony, Sic Alps, White Fence, Blouse, and Kelley Stoltz.
