Send us a Text Message.Scotty Austin isn't your ordinary or average run-of-the-mill rock star. With a remarkable track record playing across the United States, as well as being a multi-instrumentalist in numerous genres, it is clear he has a unique perspective when it comes to creating music. Hailing from Parsons, Tennessee, his interest in various instruments started at a young age when he began reading music in kindergarten while also gaining experience in the family band at church. By the late 90s, Scotty began expanding on his knowledge of music genres and branching out to multiple styles such as percussion and classical guitar performance before earning his spot as the band leader of the official NASCAR Rolling Thunder band for an entire season. His accomplishments continued when around the early 2000s, he won fourth place in the world during the International Blues Contest while representing Memphis, Tennessee. Shortly after, Scotty collaborated with a new original group and recording artist, Ash Bowers, along with Jason Aldean's label, Broken Bow Records, as well as the sister label, Stoney Creek Records. It wasn't long until Scotty decided to start his own original project, an indie rock band called Trash the Brand. He had wanted to record and play songs that he had written but never had the chance to play. Within weeks of forming, he was playing to packed houses and venues which in turn caught the attention of a few people in the music industry. Soon Scotty found himself in contact with Jeff Hanson (manager of Creed and Saving Abel), who offered to manage him. While negotiating, he asked Hanson to put him on the show with Saving Abel that was happening that weekend in Memphis. He was given the opening spot for the concert. A few days after the show, Scotty was asked to front Saving Abel in which he accepted and has since been with for over 8 years. Scotty Austin has used his natural talent and ear for distinct sounds to produce expressive song lyrics and music throughout his chttp://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarnThis episode is sponsored by www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn and brought to you as always by The Barn Media Group. Join me, Jason LaChance, host of the @KnockinDoorzDown podcast, certified addiction recovery coach, and mental health advocate for my sit down with Stephen Piazza @stephenpiazza4424 . Born in Northern California (San Jose), Stephen grew up in a strong Christian faith-based family. It was not uncommon for the Piazza family to be at church two and three times a week. In 1989, the Piazza family relocated to the Central Valley (Modesto). As a freshman, Stephen realized that music was becoming a passion in his life. In the late 90's Stephen joined a cover band called Second Avenue which played up and down the Central Valley for 2 years. In 2003, he joined a band called “Five Star Rising” which was signed to a management team, Chris Ricci Presents LLC, in late 2004. Local successes included: Winner of Battle of the Bands (opened for Spin Doctors) Opened for national acts who toured the Modesto area, such as Crossfade, Lit, Blue Oyster Cult, Vanilla Ice, Great White, Smile Empty Soul, The Calling, Third Eye Blind, and others. In 2009, Stephen was signed to an independent record label called “Big Time Records” with a band called “Dazeafter”. “Dazeafter” opened for other bands and had a hit remake of the song “Turn Up the Radio” which played for 3 months on rock stations throughout the nation. In 2014, Stephen produced a single called “Amanda's Web” as a solo artist under Steven Robb. “Amanda's Web” won a video and song contest for a magazine called Coast 2 Coast out of Miami, Florida. Stephen had fallen away from his roots as a Christian throughout the years. However, on June 12, 2020, Stephen had a near-death experience that changed his life. He had an encounter with Jesus in a hotel room in Reno and rededicated his life to God. He is now a Christian recording artist, singing for the One who gave him a second chance. His songs like “Washed Away” and “Set Free” share his story with the world of what JESUS did in his life and pray that the lyrics will point those who are battling with addiction or bondage to the One who can truly set them free. The message of his songs is meant to assure those who are seeking deliverance, that they are not ALONE! There is a God that will walk closer than a brother and carry them through their darkest days Stephen and I discuss the following and more. Intro 0:00 What was Stephen's upbringing and how did his path to substance abuse begin? 4:50 I lived the Rock N Roll Life. I could have joined the 27 Club with Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin & Kurt Cobain 11:10 What does Stephen see, when driving people to the methadone clinic? 26:46 Stephen respects that so many rockstars got sober and shared their journey 35:00 How did Stephen's faith lead him back to music & becoming a Christian artist? 44:00 This is Stephen Piazza Knockin' Doorz Down. Surprise! It's a special episode of CrossFade, thanks to a generous member of the MinnMax community. On Give to the Max Day, the MinnMax community raised more than $57,000 to help foster kids in Minneapolis. One of the many appealing donation rewards was an episode of CrossFade where the donor got to choose the album we talked about! Chris Fayter (a.k.a. Crayter) chose “Portal Of I,” the debut album of Australian prog metal band Ne Obliviscaris, which became one of his COVID-era comfort listens. We're really jazzed to get back behind the mic to discuss some great, unique music. Thanks to Chris and the MinnMax community for their ongoing generosity! We start off Episode 64 reminiscing about the Episode we recorded with Max's sister Deana Baker & a weekend with John Pardi & John Fogerty. Then we return to 2005 where we discuss shows with Alter Bridge, Crossfade, & Submersed at the Cains Ballroom as well as a Meshuggah & Disjointed show in OKC at Bricktown Live. The All American Rejects are coming to the Zoo Amp in OKC in October, in this episode we talk about a pair of AAR shows in Tulsa & OKC as well as the history of AAR in the early days. Every year CANCER SUCKS puts on an annual concert at the Cains to raise money for cancer research. We discuss the early days of the cancer sucks concerts that were 10 Local Bands for $10, giving many bands an opportunity to play the Cains, who normally would not be able to grace that stage. The reasons why some critics decried SUPER FLY on its release aren't ours to criticize (but we make that mistake on this episode a couple times anyway), but they're important to understanding its long-term impact. The bone it picks with the aftermath of the Civil Rights movement – that many of its victories were pyrrhic, and that America still has far to go before it can claim racial equity – makes it feel ahead of its time and very much of its time. Its actual function as a movie may have aged less than beautifully (it's not actually that much fun to watch or follow along with), but its combination of style (hello The Curtis Mayfield Experience) and cynicism give SUPER FLY an outsized cultural influence that precedes itself. Listen to an episode of Jason's other podcast, CrossFade, where he and Matt Helgeson discussed the music of SUPER FLY (and Rush's 2112) with video game composer Jason Graves: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/curtis-mayfield-vs-rush-feat-jason-graves/id1501267072?i=1000524248893 “I'll Let You Trip for Awhile: Curtis Mayfield's Super Fly” by Jay Ditzer for Perisphere, the Trylon blog: https://www.perisphere.org/2023/07/07/ill-let-you-trip-for-awhile-curtis-mayfields-super-fly/ Five Super Fly Hip-Hop Samples” by Matthew Tchepikova-Treon for Perisphere, the Trylon blog: “https://www.perisphere.org/2023/07/07/five-super-fly-hip-hop-samples/ Follow us on Twitter at https://twitter.com/trylovepodcast and email us at trylovepodcast@gmail.com to get in touch! CrossFade is taking a break! We haven't picked a return date yet, but Matt and Jason have ideas about how to make it even better going forward. We decided to end this season on a high note by bringing back the CrossFade Community Shuffle. It's an episode where dozens of our Patreon supporters send us their current favorite songs, we shuffle a bunch of them, and we listen to and talk about them live on the show! It's one of our favorite CrossFade traditions, so we hope you enjoy it. You can still enjoy all 60-some episodes of CrossFade for free wherever you listen to podcasts. From the bottom of our hearts, we want to express our appreciation for everyone who's enjoyed the show so far. Thanks for listening, chatting, asking, tweeting, posting, and sharing in the fun of CrossFade! You're the ones who make it great. We'd love it if you'd rate and review CrossFade on iTunes, ‘cause it means more people can find the show and love it, too! Neil Young's had quite a career. A hugely influential solo career, his work with CSNY, that thing during The Last Waltz, and now you can't even hear his music on the biggest music streaming platform on Earth. Wow! To finally crack the nut on Neil, Matt brought in writer and fellow Neil Young fanatic Tyler Wilcox for an in-depth discussion on two essential Neil records: Citizen Kane Jr. Blues 1974 (Live at The Bottom Line) and Tonight's the Night. Was rap already everywhere by the time you were old enough to choose what you wanted to listen to? If so, then it might be hard to imagine how important a show like Yo! MTV Raps was for the genre and for the music industry as a whole. It only ran for seven years, but in that time, it had an indelible impact on the kinds of music people were exposed to. In this episode, Matt (who was around for the rise of rap) and Jason (who was not) pore over the show's lasting impact by listening to some of the music you probably would've heard on Yo! MTV Raps back in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. It's quite a trip, spanning everything from classic braggadocio to harrowing tales of gangland paranoia to bit-based schtick and more. We've talked a lot about the Duluth-based indie rock band Low on this show, because Matt knows them well and Jason's never heard them. In the wake of co-founder/drummer/vocalist Mimi Parker's death in early November 2022, we wanted to dedicate an episode to a short retrospective on the group and Mimi's contributions to it. If you know Low, we hope this is a faithful look back at the group's impact. If you're new to the group, we hope you find a lot to love. Also, Matt put together a Spotify playlist of Low's music for our discussion, and you can listen along at this link: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2XvYeoVFqsiKKcQIcSQO66?si=c23db47cf12349f5 We'd love it if you'd rate and review CrossFade on iTunes, ‘cause it means more people can find the show and love it, too! This episode of CrossFade (The BossFade?) featuring writer, podcaster, and music journalist Natalie Marlin (https://twitter.com/NataliesNotInIt/) is devoted to rock icon Bruce Springsteen and ‘90s indies Archers of Loaf! Matt and Natalie chat a lot about the kinds of stories Bruce tells through his music and what makes his mild corniness endearing, as well as why Archers Of Loaf's sound cut through the Pavement-esque slacker rock vibe of the ‘90s. Like the bodacious ‘dos from which the sound gets its name, “hair metal” can be a hard genre to pin down! Luckily, we've got writer/podcaster/critic/organizer and hair metal fan Elana Levin to run through two genre classics to help set some things straight! Matt and Elana cover Def Leppard's “Hysteria” (the one with “Pour Some Sugar On Me” on it) and “Long Cold Winter” by Cinderella (one of the bands featured in HBO's Peacemaker TV series). In this episode, they chat about what makes hair metal so special and popular, what role Peacemaker played in popularizing some under-heard hair metal bangers, and why neither of them like “Pour Some Sugar On Me” very much. Pharoah Sanders (not “Pharaoh”) was a disciple of John Coltrane and a pioneer in his own right, putting spiritual jazz on the map with unique, genre-blending textures. You can't truly encapsulate an artist like Pharoah Sanders in a few songs, but on this episode, we pay our respects to the legend with seven songs that we think exemplify some of the broad strokes in artist's sonic palette. “When I say ‘I like everything,' I really, really like everything.” So says Tariq Ravelomanana (https://twitter.com/infinitykniives), who creates music under the name Infinity Knives. He means it, too: He gets inspiration from everywhere: folk, country, experimental, grunge, pop, hip-hop, prog, rap. That idealist eclecticism comes through in his own music, including his 2022 record, King Cobra, which he created with Brian Ennals. It also led him to bring “Welcome to Hard Times,” the 2020 country record by country musician Charley Crockett, to his CrossFade debut. Matt counters with 1996's “Paradise Don't Come Cheap,” the bombastic, iconoclastic second record by rap duo New Kingdom. Rife with industrial production and brusque lines complemented by the harsh vocals that carry them, it's a heavier record than one might give it credit for. Then, because they're both obsessed with music, Matt and Tariq just kind of talk about other music for, oh, about 15 minutes. It's a real treat if you love hearing people who love music talk about music they love. We recently uncovered our old iPods. We haven't really used them for several years, so we thought it'd be a lot of fun to hit “shuffle” and see which of the tens of thousands of songs on them came up first. Then we discussed each of them on mic! We're proud of some and cringing at a few others. It's a real time capsule, kind of a snapshot of who we were back then! Also, what we cared enough to download and put in iTunes and fill out the metadata for (ah, the inconvenient past). Hope you enjoy reminisce-ning along! It's a proggy, skanky episode of CrossFade with writer, editor, and podcaster John Carson (https://twitter.com/John_Carson)! In this episode, we're just barely scratching the surface of ska with John's pick, Streetlight Manifesto's “Everything Goes Numb”. Then we chart new territory with Nolan Potter's “Music Is Dead,” one of Matt's favorite albums to listen to on vinyl. Both are new to the other's picks, so it turns into a really fun, big conversation about genres, how ska and its perceptions have changed over time, making music on your own, and that time John got fired from his high school ska band while working at Subway. In this chooglin' episode of CrossFade, Matt and Jason take a suggestion from the community (thanks MinnMax supporter podbod!) and go back to some of the first music we can remember loving: The Doobie Brothers and Creedence Clearwater Revival! We talk about rock genre blending of the 1970s, complicated band dynamics, how these groups influenced us as musicians, and why this music has stuck with us for so long. We'd love it if you'd rate and review CrossFade on iTunes, ‘cause it means more people can find the show and love it, too! What does perfection mean to you? What if you knew someone ELSE called something “perfect”? That's what we wanted to find out on this episode of CrossFade, so we looked at two of the dozen albums that have received a perfect 10 score from Pitchfork, the music publication everybody famously agrees with and enjoys without reservation. Wilco's breakthrough “Yankee Hotel Foxtrot” and Amon Tobin's breakthrough “Bricolage” are pretty different (that's CrossFade babyyyy), but our discussion bridges them both: How does seeing that big 10 make you think differently about the music you listen to? How much does that matter in the age of influencers, when every opinion can be validated by someone, somewhere on the internet? It's a pretty complex question! We'd also love it if you'd rate and review the show on iTunes, ‘cause it means more people can find the show and love it, too! Content warning: This episode contains discussions of sensitive topics like depression, sexual abuse, and suicide as explored in the music of The Mountain Goats and Silver Jews. MinnMax Contributor and all-around gentleman Joe Juba brought an album by one of his favorite artists to CrossFade! This episode might be the most we've ever delved into lyrics. The Mountain Goats' “Heretic Pride” and Silver Jews' “The Natural Bridge” are both albums that go heavy on storytelling, picking unique perspectives to set the scene and evoke specific times and places. In this episode, we talk about what makes John Darnielle's music so compelling, the legacy of David Berman, distinctive vocalists, OSTs we love even if we haven't consumed the media they're from, and much more thanks to questions straight from the MinnMax community! It's a mid-aughts extravaganza on CrossFade, featuring writer, critic, connoisseur and musician Erin Margaret Day (https://twitter.com/comeawaywithEMD)! With Erin, we break down the radical roots of these bands and the kind of music they play, what Electrelane's largely instrumental album is saying without words, and how sometimes the sound of hopelessness actually kinda rocks. AJ Moser is the biggest Arcade Fire fan we know, and in this episode of CrossFade, he got to make the case for “Funeral” being one of the greatest indie rock records of the 21st century. Matt returned the favor with the esteemed, accessible Built to Spill record “Keep It Like a Secret,” which has the spirit and energy of jam band music but in a tight, catchy, interesting package. In this episode, we talk about Arcade Fire's reputation and career, what makes Built to Spill such fun, and grapple with the legacy of a debut record that got so much attention on release. For their 100th Episode, Aaron and Brent welcome a special guest who equally shares their love of music, both new and old. With a radio career that started in the mid 80s before transitioning to television in 1995 hosting MTV's 120 Minutes, Matt Pinfield has earned respect from fans, peers, and musicians over the years for his encyclopedia-like mind of music history and never-ending passion for the music he loves. As Vice President of A & R and Artist Development for Columbia Records, Pinfield was responsible for the signing and overseeing the production of albums by acts including Coheed & Cambria and Crossfade. In 2016, Pinfield penned his memoir, All Of These Things I've Done: My Insane, Improbable Rock Life, named after the song The Killers wrote about him. Not only does Pinfield take part in a compelling discussion on all things music with Aaron and Brent but he also joins them in picking artists to spotlight including The Virginmarys, Tyler Warren, and, The Wonder Stuff. After tackling Metroid in season 1 and then Halo in season 2, Game Informer's Video Gameography podcast turns its gaze to one of Sony's biggest properties: Uncharted. Over the next several weeks, we'll examine all of the mainline entries in Naughty Dog's blockbuster action series, so sit back and relax as we kick the season off with Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. Developed by Naughty Dog, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune was a big release for Sony's PlayStation 3 console. Released on November 19, 2007, Uncharted brought Naughty Dog into a bold new era of "mature" game development. In this week's episode, we talk about Naughty Dog's history developing titles like Crash Bandicoot and Jak and Daxter, how the studio was largely unprepared for the challenges of Uncharted's development. We also talk about how Naughty Dog almost designed a game similar to BioShock, how Johnny Knoxville served as inspiration for Nathan Drake, and how Gears of War's release changed Uncharted's design for the better. Join hosts Ben Reeves (@BenjaminReeves), Marcus Stewart (@MarcusStewart7), and ex-Game Informer editor and host of the CrossFade podcast Matt Helgeson (@MattHelgeson) as we unpack the history and impact of Nathan Drake's video game debut. If you'd like to get in touch with the Video Gameography podcast, you can email us at podcast@gameinformer.com. You can also join our official Game Informer Discord server by linking your Discord account to your Twitch account and subscribing to the Game Informer Twitch channel.
