RPG title screens bear a heavy burden. They're one of the first things we see in a game, making them one of the best places to leave a strong first impression. And often, a key component of that is the music. Several years ago, we highlighted eight standout title screen tracks in episode 71, and today, with a new panel, we're highlighting eight more! Come in and enjoy the music of several games you may know and some you likely don't. Welcome Matt to his first episode, and learn why there's an Elvis song in our links below, in this jam-packed episode of, well, jams!As a side note, this episode's publish date was moved back, so some of the info near the end about Random Encounter and Retro Encounter's schedule is accurate, if behind where the shows currently are.Featuring: Mike Salbato, Gio Castillo, Tin Manuel, Matt Wardell; Edited by Mike SalbatoLinks for this episodeRhythm Encounter 61 - A Very Yoko Shimomura JanuaryRhythm Encounter 71 - Press Start: Title Screen MusicSquare Enix: KINGDOM HEARTS: Memories of Dearly Beloved with Yoko ShimomuraYouTube: Elvis Presley - Unchained Melody (live)YouTube: Community Pom: Ending ThemeTracklistPeaceful Beginnings0:11:20 - ‌Somnus (Instrumental Version) (Yoko Shimomura) - Final Fantasy XV0:13:46 - Dearly Beloved -KINGDOM HEARTS III Version- (Yoko Shimomura) - Kingdom Hearts IIICheerful Beginnings0:32:30 - ‌Solramimi (Kazuki Yanagawa) - Atelier Ryza: Ever Darkness & the Secret Hideout0:34:27 - Title (Hideki Tobeta) - Community PomEmotional Beginnings0:56:01 - Dragon Age: Origins (Inon Zur) - Dragon Age: Origins0:58:46 - ‌Off-Seer (Yasunori Mitsuda) - Xenoblade Chronicles 3There's-no-time-for-backup Beginnings1:20:49 - Metropolitan Edge (Akira Yamaoka) - The 25th Ward: The Silver Case1:23:47 - Invitation to the Overworld‌ (Yukihide Takekawa) - Soul Blazer1:53:10 - Matt's Bonus Track!Album links for places to buy, stream, and more are available in our post on RPGFan.Get in Touch:RPGFan.comRPGFan ShopEmail us: music@rpgfan.comTwitter: @rpgfancomBluesky: @rpgfan.bsky.socialInstagram: @rpgfancomThreads: @rpgfancomFacebook: rpgfancomTwitch: rpgfancom

I am joined by Mark Benis, who has composed the musical soundtrack for the point and click adventure game Rosewater, set in the wild west and released in 2024. Mark has also worked on the soundtrack for Lamplight City with others credits for titles including Wolfenstein: Youngblood. In this podcast, we discuss his joy of retro chip-tune music of retro gaming platforms including the Nintendo Game Boy, which has inspired his journey creativity to now write musical soundtracks for modern gaming titles. Topics include: Mark Benis’ opportunity to become a game composer Childhood love of Pokémon Red/Blue music led to a lifelong curiosity about chip music The beauty of 8-bit music to orchestral and back again Using Wwyse and FMOD as audio middleware to replace line-by-line coding Mark’s early days and the audio equipment he used The financial barrier of the many professional audio sample libraries No woodwinds in the game Lamplight City inspiring creativity by limitation How hardware MIDI modules (Roland MT-32, Sound Canvas etc) have been replaced with software music audio libraries Mark’s go to piano performances to loosen his fingers and inspire his thoughts Mark’s computer and desk setup for music composition What is Rosewater and the musical brief you were given Avoiding the typical wild west country style music How much of the original work made it into the game soundtrack? How much of the artwork and game direction did Mark see before composing the tracks? Timing introductions to the music, or arranging the music to the intro? Hearing the voice acting dialogue for the first time reactions Mixing virtual instruments with live music players Choral music creation for the game Lamplight City recorded in a church with a real choir Mark’s future projects Collaborating on musical projects and avoiding arguments Featured music within the podcast, kindly provided with permission by Mark Benis… 7-43 to Rosewater Once Upon a Time in Western Vespuccia Night Walk The Showdown So Long, Partner Flor Silvestre by Christiane Ramirez You can download the full Rosewater Soundtrack on Mark Benis’ Bandcamp page. Broken Chair Scores

This is episode 44, which marks a paradigm shift (at least a small one). We have tried to be more concise in discussing the scores we have brought along, so that we can stay under the 90 minute mark. You'll hear us talking about this during the actual show. It's all about constraints and how they can make the show better. You'll be the judge of that. As always, we bring you two soundtracks. This time they are both related to anime, or at least come from Japanese culture. On the film side we have Hellsing, a 2001 anime directed by Umanosuke Iida and Yasunori Urata with a soundtrack by Yasushi Ishii. The game is Xbox 2007's Lost Odyssey, with a score by none other than Nobuo Uematsu and directed by Daisuke Fukugawa. If you want to support us you can always write a comment here in the page, on Mastodon or on Instagram which would be highly appreciated. If you're interested in a more relaxed podcast about mostly (city-) building game soundtracks for the PC (think Anno, Settlers, Tycoons from the 90's and onwards) then check out Aufbaumusik. Enjoy this episode and please give us feedback!

In this episode of Bring the Pain, I decided to kick it old school and do a VGM podcast about one of my favorite video game series, Ninja Gaiden. This fast-paced side-scroller had some of my fondest memories with my friends and my brother Tom. Ninja Gaiden wasn't a joke, as many of us who played it knew, but what kept us playing was the soundtrack. All three games could definitely fit into the break beats category, which is the style of music a lot of my DJ friends play. This episode is definitely full of octane from the front to back with a few surprises along the way. It's time to buckle up and get ready for one of the craziest rides you'll go on this year. Have a great day, everyone, and may the VGM be with you.Thank you for the support and contributions all of you make for my podcasts and articles each week. With fall (or autumn, if you prefer) around the corner for many of us, it feels like a good time for relaxing music. While we did a pair of episodes focused on relaxing RPG music about four years ago (see Episode 54 and Episode 55), this time, RPGFan's biggest lo-fi fans got together to listen and chat about lo-fi RPG music. Sometimes these are straight from games, but often they come from the incredible community of independent musicians and arrangers. We have both of these and more covered today, to put on your favorite comfy Lofi Girl merch and chill out with us.Featuring: Mike Salbato, Hilary Andreff, Gio Castillo, Wes Iliff; Edited by Paul DennisSpecial Credit: Our title this episode is inspired by and in honor of Homework Radio's excellent fantasy-themed lo-fi playlists.
