Ivor Davis is a British journalist who, in 1964, went on tour with The Beatles for the Daily Express, covering their North American dates while ghost-writing a column for George Harrison (having taken over the assignment from Derek Taylor). He did similar duties for the following year, and after which, he settled in California as West Coast correspondent. His job saw him cover the Warren Commission findings, the gubernatorial campaign trail for Ronald Reagan (governor) and in 1968, Bobby Kennedy (whose murder Ivor was a witness to). The following year, Ivor was at the center of the Manson Family case when he became the first journalist to visit Spahn ranch, as well as the first writer to publish a book on the Tate-LaBianca murders, Five To Die. He first published his memoir of The Beatles' experience as The Beatles and Me On Tour ten years ago for the 50th; it's now been expanded and republished for the 60th anniversary. He also has a new true crime book out, The Devil in My Friend about a 1980s double murder in Malibu. You can find info on all at his website, https://ivordavisbooks.com/ The Jazz, Blues and R and B Podcast is found on: Youtube, Itunes, Anchor, Spotify, Amazon Podcasts, Google Podcast, Overcast, Breaker, Castbox, Radio Public, Podbay, Stitcher....and more! Over more than half a century as a writer for the London Daily Express and the Times of London, British-born Ivor Davis covered major stories in North America. He penned a weekly entertainment column for the New York Times Syndicate for over 15 years, interviewing some of the biggest names in show business, from Cary Grant to Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton to Tom Cruise and Muhammad Ali. In 1962 he was smuggled onto the campus of the riot-torn University of Mississippi when James Meredith became the first black student to be enrolled --accompanied by 127 --yes 127-- US attorneys--Days of rioting followed with two killed--including one foreign journalist. Three years later Davis  was in the front lines as Los Angeles' Watts riots erupted. In l964, Davis was the only British daily newspaper correspondent to cover The Beatles' first American tour from start to finish, given unparalleled access to John, Paul, George and Ringo on the road, in their hotel, and during long nights of card and Monopoly games as they talked frankly about their bizarre new life. He also ghosted a regular newspaper column for George Harrison. His first-hand, insider's memoir, the award-winning The Beatles and Me On Tour, 60th Anniversary Book, was published  in February. It is a fascinating journey back in time where for the first time he chronicles, frankly and humorously, 34 days with the world's most famous band on the road—at a critical moment in the history of rock. The anniversary edition was published on Feb 9th this year. Davis covered Robert Kennedy's 1968 presidential bid and was in the kitchen in the Ambassador Hotel the night Senator Kennedy was assassinated.  He was one of the Boys on the Bus chronicling the life of actor-turned-politician Ronald Reagan, first in his campaign for governor of California, then for president. He was a co-author of the 1969 political book Divided They Stand, which chronicled the Presidential election; and witnessed some of the biggest trials in American history: Sirhan Sirhan, convicted of killing Bobby Kennedy in 1969; black-power militant Angela Davis, acquitted of murder in l972; a year later, Daniel Ellsberg's trial for leaking the Pentagon Papers, and, in 1976, he was in San Francisco to see heiress Patty Hearst convicted of robbery after being kidnapped by the Symbionese Liberation Army.   His new true crime book, “The Devil in My Friend: The Inside Story of a Malibu Murder.”  It is an account of the famous Eighties trial of Malibu engineer Frederick George Roehler,  who was convicted of the murder of his wife and young stepson after an almost year-long trial in the Santa Barbara Courthouse in May l982. The killings took place close by—at Santa Cruz Island. The new book will be published this year on May 7th.   https://ivordavisbooks.com/ Connect more:  https://www.chonacas.com/podcast/ https://www.instagram.com/shesallovertheplacepodcast/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/katiechonacas/   I hope you enjoyed the episode, please share with one person! He has covered pop culture and iconic figures throughout his 60 + years in journalism as a writer for such massive and iconic papers such as the Express and the Times of London. His incredible body of work encompasses nearly every corner of pop culture - writing and interviewing everyone from the Beatles to Charles Manson, from Tom Cruise, Cary Grant, Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Muhammad Ali, Mariel Hemingway and Robin Williams just to name a FEW! London-born Ivor Davis first came to America in the early sixties and was appointed West Coast correspondent for the  London Daily Express in l963.His first big assignment came the following year: to hang out, travel with and get to know the four members of a new pop group from Liverpool who were tearing up the world with their music: the Beatles. In the summer of 1964 The Beatles embarked on a record-breaking, pandemonium tour of America. This is the first chronicle of that tour told by someone on the inside: Ivor Davis, then a young reporter for the London Daily Express. For 34 days, he had unrestricted access to the four boys from Liverpool from their hotel suites to the concert arenas to their private jet, fending off girls’ (& their mothers’) attempts to hook up with the band, playing all-night games of Monopoly with John Lennon, ghostwriting a newspaper column for George Harrison, being there as Bob Dylan introduced them to pot. In The Beatles and Me On Tour, Davis recounts the rip-roaring adventures of the most legendary band at a critical moment in the history of rock ‘n’ roll. As a writer for the Express & the Times of London, Ivor covered major events in North America. He penned a weekly entertainment column for the New York Times Syndicate interviewing some of the biggest names in show business. He was a co-author of the l969 book Divided They Stand, which chronicled the Presidential election & witnessed some of the biggest trials in American history: Sirhan Sirhan, convicted of killing Bobby Kennedy , black-power militant Angela Davis, acquitted of murder in l972 Daniel Ellsberg’s trial for leaking the Pentagon Papers, Patty Hearst convicted of robbery after being kidnapped by the Symbionese Liberation Army. He co-wrote Five to Die, the first book ever published about the Sharon Tate murders.
