✨ Episode Overview: Remember when this was supposed to be a trilogy? Well… surprise! Here's the bonus track — the addendum.
In this episode of the HX podcast, as part of our "Well at Work" series, I had the privilege of speaking with Justin Long, an author who shared his incredible story of resilience. I was so impacted by his journey, which he says truly began when he got sober at age 32 after years as a "raging alcoholic filled with self-loathing". Justin recounts growing up in an emotionally dysfunctional household, shaped by generational trauma, where he was made to feel he had no value. This led him to a life of searching for external validation through alcohol and other harmful behaviors. Justin's path to healing has been a lifelong journey involving AA, a pivotal mentor named Roland, and transformative trauma therapy. We talk about how he learned to develop self-awareness, challenge those negative beliefs instilled in him since childhood, and shift from self-loathing to self-love. He now applies these profound lessons to his leadership role at Spring Hill Equine Veterinary Clinic, where he focuses on knowing himself to lead himself, understanding his team as individuals, and creating a positive culture where people can grow. His message is a powerful reminder that if you don't feel good about who you are, you have the power to change that. If you'd like to check out his books, click here for more details. I hope you enjoy this episode! Stacie More episodes at StacieBaird.com.
The Cardinals coach previews his team's game with Spring Hill
I sit down with Pastor Tony Calabrese, lead pastor at The Gathering in Spring Hill, Tennessee, for a conversation that ranges from his admittedly bougie coffee habits to the deep spiritual work that happens in seasons of transition.Tony shares how his passion for prayer was shaped by watching his single mom depend on God through difficult circumstances, and why he believes prayer begins with understanding God as Father rather than taskmaster. We dive into his journey of saying yes to his biggest no - church planting - and how God often calls us out of our comfort zones to step into His purposes. The heart of our conversation centers on transition as spiritual invitation. Tony offers profound insight for anyone feeling stuck between what was and what's to come, explaining why God's perceived absence in difficult seasons might actually be the prime condition for His breakthrough. We explore how the greatest demonstration of God's power at the resurrection was actually what was missing from the tomb, not what was there.Tony also shares about The Gathering, the church he recently planted after a previous church planting season ended during COVID. He describes this new venture as the most freeing and joy-filled season of his 19-year ministry. Whether you're in a season of transition, struggling with prayer, or simply need encouragement to trust God in the unknown, this conversation offers hope and practical wisdom for following Jesus through every season of life.Chapters00:00 | Introduction and First Impressions04:42 | Transitioning Through Life's Seasons05:11 | The Coffee Journey09:12 | The Power of Prayer14:27 | Personal Stories of Prayer19:13 | Saying Yes to Our Biggest No23:07 | Encouragement for Prayer29:02 | Navigating Transitions30:14 | Navigating Transitions: The Spiritual Journey37:01 | The Power of Dependence in Transition41:29 | God's Silence: A Test of Faith47:34 | The Gathering: A New Church Community54:45 | Designing a Beautiful Day: Simple JoysTony's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tony_calabrese_The Gathering Website: https://www.thegatheringchurch.co/Tony on QAVA: https://qava.tv/teachers/tony-calabrese/

Henry E., better known as “Hank” Erwin, is widely known as the “storyteller of motivation!” His talent for telling stories that both entertain and result in commitment and action on the part of his listeners is legendary. Hank learned the art of storytelling from his late father, Medal of Honor Recipient Henry “Red” Erwin, who held small crowds spellbound with stories of bravery in World War II. Hank became a committed Christian in college and married his sweetheart Shelia Daniel the day before his graduation. They have now been together for 53 years and have two married sons, and seven grandchildren. They reside in Spring Hill, Tennessee. But it was telling stories that guided Hank's life. He attended Dallas Seminary in Texas to become a preacher. But during those days, God opened a door into radio and TV leading him to become an on-air personality. So, instead of becoming a preacher, Hank plunged into media for nearly thirty years as a journalist and talk show host. He soon became a media advocate for pro-life and family values, patriotism, and conservative issues. All that eventually won him awards and notice in Alabama among voters looking for fresh faces in the world of politics. So in 2002, Hank was elected to the Alabama State Senate, serving two terms as a firebrand for conservative family values across the state. He fought to bring gambling to a standstill and helped usher in a whole new Republican government for the people of Alabama. However, strange as it may sound, it was his bedtime stories that really changed history! As a loving father, he told his two sons bedtime stories when they were very young. For example, he used Woodlawn football stories that were so colorful that it ultimately ignited their imaginations to the point that they wanted to become movie makers! So, forty years later the world now knows the famous Erwin Brothers, Andy and Jon, who have gone on to produce and direct ten faith-based motion pictures, all of which that have garnered Dove Awards for outstanding achievements in Christian film! You will undoubtedly recall many of them, including “October Baby,” “Woodlawn,” “I Can Only Imagine,” “Jesus Revolution” and “House of David.” Hank now spends some of his time traveling around the country telling stories in banquets and churches to entertain and motivate people. But, recently Hank also assumed the role of leading a nation-wide movement for revival and spiritual awakening called the Great American Prayer Revival, or GAP26. This effort has the potential to be used by God to bring much-needed healing to America. In this podcast, Hank tells how, when he was in college, God lovingly brought him to faith in Christ and then, through a wide variety of career moves, to where he currently is now leading GAP26, a nation-wide effort to bring much-needed revival and spiritual awakening to America. You will find his call to get involved with this important effort very compelling! For more information, go to GAP-event.org.

Today we have Brian. He is 40 years old from Spring Hill, MA and he took his last drink of alcohol on July 16th, 2024. Perhaps the most important letter from Yung to Bill W. was a letter suggesting a spiritual solution was needed to overcome addiction. He was a firm believer that addiction has nothing to do with weakness but is a misdirected cry for wholeness. Another viewpoint that Carl Yung gave us is to not ask why you want to quit drinking but what pain you are trying to silence? Or what role is alcohol playing? When we start asking the right questions and stop fighting the addiction, the healing process begins. If you keep doing your own inner work, the massive ship called your addiction will change course. It takes time to redirect the energy called an addiction, but when we start asking the right questions, it's going to happen. It's just a matter of time. [07:36] Paul introduces Brian: Brian is 40 years old and lives in Springfield, MA. He has been married 13 years, and they have two children. For fun he enjoys weight training, cooking, and spending time with his kids. Brian is the oldest of four kids and his parents divorced when he was young. He shares that he internalized a lot of stuff growing up and carried a lot of emotion. Brian wasn't the kid to act out, but he recalls the first time he drank was when his mother was out of town and he ended up getting very sick. He says it taught him a lesson, and he didn't party much in high school. In college, Brian says, alcohol acted like that warm hug that people talk about. It gave him a lot of confidence socially and he became friends with people older than him. Once they started graduating, he lost a lot of the friends he drank with, so he found himself drinking alone occasionally which he didn't think there was anything wrong with. After graduation, the job market was tough which had Brian stressed out and he began using alcohol as a coping mechanism. He was drinking daily and ended up getting pancreatitis after a while, which was a bit of a wake up call for him. The drinking didn't end but Brian began to try and moderate. Over the years Brian was able to quit for periods of time but would return to drinking to cope with traumatic events. He was working on sobriety, watching YouTube videos, trying naltrexone and listening to podcasts. He was making progress, but COVID came and knocked him down again. Brian did not want to fall onto the same path that his father had with his alcoholism. Brian had a rock bottom moment when his behavior on a vacation had him showing a negative side of himself to his in-laws. On the weekend of his wife's birthday, Brian had a few days sober, and his internal voice was trying to convince him to drink. He turned on the RE podcast while he was mowing the lawn and soon after had made the decision that he was going to quit drinking forever. He then burned the ships and told his wife about his decision. Since quitting drinking Brian's health has improved, he has lost 35 pounds and has found a community in Café RE. He is planning on finding more connection locally to him through AA soon. Brian's parting piece of guidance: listen to your heart rather than your brain. Follow your instincts. Join us for this special reflection on what God has done in our church this year. We remember the power of prayer and the profound affect it has had on our faith this year as we have seen God move.
Host Jeremy C. Park talks with Graham Honeycutt, Executive Director of Tucker's House, who highlights the Middle Tennessee-based nonprofit organization and their efforts to provide home modifications for families of children and young adults with disabilities. The organization provides financial assistance, construction management, and functional home modifications, which include making bathrooms accessible, adding adaptive equipment, adding solid flooring, adding ramps and widening entry doors.During the interview, Graham shares some of the history for the organization and how he and his family were introduced to Tucker's House and were blessed by the organization's efforts; and how he now has that same opportunity to help other families, after assuming the role of Executive Director five years ago, after Founder, Sunny Rosanbalm's retirement. Graham describes their process and discusses the importance of pairing licensed therapists with architectural designers who understand inclusive design to ensure that the modifications made to a home will serve the children and families throughout their lifetime and assist them every day. They start with an assessment to create an individualized plan that accounts for a child's current and future needs, considering factors like prognosis and long-term accessibility. The pre-construction phase can take 3-6 months to coordinate all necessary parties, and the process involves details like installing solid flooring, widening doorways, and adding accessibility equipment like stair lifts.Graham discusses bathroom modifications for disabled individuals, including accessible showers, sinks, and towel racks, emphasizing independence and dignity. He explains that these projects involve collaboration with various community partners, and talks about their House to Home video series on their website and YouTube channel, which showcases transformations of selected families' homes. Graham describes some of their current projects, highlighting a ramp installation for a Spanish-speaking family in Murfreesboro and another project in Spring Hill, with filming underway for the next House to Home episode.Graham explains the organization's funding needs, including their "Thrive in 25" campaign to serve 25% more families, and emphasizes the importance of financial contributions and partnerships with construction professionals. Graham shares heartwarming feedback from families about the life-changing transformations their homes undergo, and provides various ways for the community to support their efforts, including visiting tuckershouse.org, watching their award-winning video series, and contacting them via phone or social media.Visit https://tuckershouse.org to learn more and get involved.
Reclaiming the Inner Life as Christ's Sacred RetreatWhat if your soul is more than a battlefield—or a burden to manage—but a garden? In this episode, we step into the rich metaphor drawn from Charles Spurgeon's 19th-century devotion on Song of Solomon 5:1, where Christ says, “I am come into my garden.” With help from Gordon MacDonald's Ordering Your Private World, and a haunting lyric from Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, we explore what it means to reclaim the soul as sacred space. You'll be invited to:Reimagine your inner life as a walled garden—set apart, protected, and tended by graceHear Spurgeon's challenge to resist worldly encroachmentReflect on MacDonald's insight: that an untended soul will always be overrun by the worldLong for the Eden your soul remembers—and the Christ who still walks among the liliesThis isn't about performance—it's about presence. Not religious activity—but relational intimacy with the One who purchased your soul as His own retreat.
Have you ever prayed and felt like your words were hitting the ceiling? That God was silent, even when your heart was screaming? This episode is for you.

The announced episode number is incorrect. Episode 537 was injected into the podcast in light of the immediacy of the situation. The following is a rework of the Charles Spurgeon Evening Devotion for June 22which was first published in 1866. The estimated writing year for June 22 devotion would have been Circa 1865 or early 1866. His words written down by candle or lamplight approximately 160 years ago are soberingly impactful and apply to us at this very moment in history. As soon as I read it I knew I had to shine the spotlight on its message. Spurgeon's devotion is in the public domain and copyright free.DONATE You can help support this podcast by clicking our secure PayPal account.
