Perhaps the most important letter from Yung to Bill W. was a letter suggesting a spiritual solution was needed to overcome addiction. He was a firm believer that addiction has nothing to do with weakness but is a misdirected cry for wholeness.   Another viewpoint that Carl Yung gave us is to not ask why you want to quit drinking but what pain you are trying to silence? Or what role is alcohol playing?   When we start asking the right questions and stop fighting the addiction, the healing process begins. If you keep doing your own inner work, the massive ship called your addiction will change course. It takes time to redirect the energy called an addiction, but when we start asking the right questions, it's going to happen. It's just a matter of time.   [07:36] Paul introduces Brian:   Brian is 40 years old and lives in Springfield, MA. He has been married 13 years, and they have two children. For fun he enjoys weight training, cooking, and spending time with his kids.   Brian is the oldest of four kids and his parents divorced when he was young. He shares that he internalized a lot of stuff growing up and carried a lot of emotion. Brian wasn't the kid to act out, but he recalls the first time he drank was when his mother was out of town and he ended up getting very sick. He says it taught him a lesson, and he didn't party much in high school.   In college, Brian says, alcohol acted like that warm hug that people talk about. It gave him a lot of confidence socially and he became friends with people older than him. Once they started graduating, he lost a lot of the friends he drank with, so he found himself drinking alone occasionally which he didn't think there was anything wrong with.   After graduation, the job market was tough which had Brian stressed out and he began using alcohol as a coping mechanism. He was drinking daily and ended up getting pancreatitis after a while, which was a bit of a wake up call for him. The drinking didn't end but Brian began to try and moderate.   Over the years Brian was able to quit for periods of time but would return to drinking to cope with traumatic events. He was working on sobriety, watching YouTube videos, trying naltrexone and listening to podcasts. He was making progress, but COVID came and knocked him down again.   Brian did not want to fall onto the same path that his father had with his alcoholism. Brian had a rock bottom moment when his behavior on a vacation had him showing a negative side of himself to his in-laws.   On the weekend of his wife's birthday, Brian had a few days sober, and his internal voice was trying to convince him to drink. He turned on the RE podcast while he was mowing the lawn and soon after had made the decision that he was going to quit drinking forever. He then burned the ships and told his wife about his decision.   Since quitting drinking Brian's health has improved, he has lost 35 pounds and has found a community in Café RE. He is planning on finding more connection locally to him through AA soon.   Brian's parting piece of guidance: listen to your heart rather than your brain. Have you ever come across one of those rare true crime cases that keep you scratching your head. Things just don't add up and it seems helpless not having more answers. Well, this case will leave you asking questions for sure. Today KCC discusses the case of a Jane Doe who has been nameless for almost 40 years. She was discovered at the scene of a semi-truck crash. The twist, she was found under the trailer. So many theories surround this case and how she ended up underneath a tractor trailer. It was recently thrust back into the media because Fayette County is determined to give her back her name. 

The announced episode number is incorrect. Episode 537 was injected into the podcast in light of the immediacy of the situation. Charles Spurgeon wrote a profound statement in his evening devotion for May 7th: "We would not wish to enter heaven till our work is done, and it may be that we are yet ordained to minister light to souls benighted in the wilderness of sin." There aren't many dairy farms left in Tennessee but one of the more unique ones still around is Cleburn Jersey Farm in Spring Hill, Tennessee. Laura Purtle is the sixth generation on the farm and takes pride in continuing the legacy her ancestors have passed down for decades. They have the oldest continuing milking jersey herd in the Nation. Laura explains what it means to her to carry on the legacy of their dairy farm and how they've expanded to keep it all going.

I need to add a note to this episode before it begins.  I had emailed Mel a few weeks ago for a follow up and didn't get a reply, but I know she's a busy lady and didn't think much about it.  Then today I received a note from Carolina that she had also reached out to Mel several times with no response.  So Carolina did more digging and found Mel Shields obituary.  Mel passed away on April 5th, 2025.  Only five days after this interview was recorded. This was quite a shock to us.  But I can't imagine the shock it must be to her dear husband, Paul. Paul, I want to extend my heartfelt sympathy.  It was a privilege to know Mel through our quilting group.  She will be greatly missed.  And I want to let you know that you and your family are in our prayers. It was an honor to record Mel's story.  And Paul, I hope being able to hear her voice in this interview will give you comfort. Mel Shields just has a few rules you need to follow when you're at The Quilting Room with Mel. There are no quilting police, you make your quilts the way you want to and if you are happy with the results, so is she. Everyone is welcome in her quilting room and last but not least enjoy your sewing machines the way you want to. These rules become very clear as we get to chat with Mel you'll hear her deep love for quilting and sewing machines. Here's Mel's No Y-Seam LeMoyne Star Obituary for Melissa Dawn Shields September 28, 1979 - April 5, 2025 Quenemo - Melissa Dawn Shields, 45, passed away on Saturday, April 5, 2025, at Advent Health in Ottawa, Kansas. She was born on September 28, 1979, in Ottawa, Kansas, the daughter of James and Donna (Green) Meek. Melissa had lived most of her life in the Quenemo Community. She graduated from Marais des Cygnes Valley High School in 1998.   Melissa had worked as a waitress in high school and college, worked for Grapevine Internet as a Tech Rep and had worked several years at Marais des Cygnes Valley Elementary School. She had started as a Para with Three Lakes and then became the librarian and IT technician for the school. She had been a volunteer firefighter and worked with Osage County Emergency Management. She was a member of the Quenemo United Methodist Church and had always helped with the Quenemo Penny Suppers. On December 19, 2004, Melissa was united in marriage to Paul Shields at the Michigan Valley Community Church. Melissa was preceded in death by her parents, James and Donna. Melissa is survived by her husband, Paul of 20 years; by her son, Joshua Shields of Herington; by her stepdaughter, April Shields; by her brother, Jim Meek of Spring Hill; and by her sister, Dee Dinkle of Independence, Missouri. Funeral services for Melissa will be held at 11:00am on Friday, April 18 at the Feltner Funeral Chapel in Lyndon. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Quenemo. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:00pm on Thursday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions in memory of Melissa may be made to Marais des Cygnes Valley Elementary School, sent in care of Feltner Funeral Home, 818 Topeka Avenue, Lyndon, KS 66451.
