Today on a special Too Opinionated we celebrate fifty years of Little House on the Prairie and the announcement of a new Netflix adaption by chatting with cast members Dean Butler and Alison Arngrim. TV fans around the world remember Arngrim as Nellie Oleson, the acid-tongued hellcat – declared “TV history's #1 one bitch” by Vanity Fair – who tormented pure, sweet Laura Ingalls for seven years on “Little House on the Prairie.” In Confessions of a Prairie B*tch, Arngrim offers a riotous evening of anecdotes, stand-up comedy, and multimedia content about life as the scorned yet beloved devious pre-teen, complete with frilly petticoats and curls. The one-woman stage show made its debut in New York City in 2002 and has since become a global sensation, drawing packed houses in the U.S. and abroad. The hit show spawned Arngrim's record breaking New York Times Best Selling memoir, similarly titled "Confessions of a Prairie B*tch: How I Survived Nellie Oleson and Learned to Love Being Hated" (Harper Collins). Cast at twenty-two years old, Butler had no idea of the lasting impact being cast in Little House on the Prairie would have on him. Having previously starred in Judy Blume's Forever with Stephanie Zimbalist, Butler was fresh- faced and naïve to Hollywood, eager to make his mark. He found his home in the Prairie and embraced his fellow cast members as family. Butler's passion for honest-to-goodness entertainment began in the Prairie and followed him throughout his rich career of acting, producing, and directing. PRAIRIE MAN: My Little House Life & Beyond (on sale June 25, 2024; HC, $28.00) by Dean Butler shares the behind- the-scenes of Little House on the Prairie on a heartfelt journey of “good luck, good television, and the very good— if gloriously imperfect—people who made it so.” Cast as Almanzo, Laura Ingalls' starring love interest, Butler captured the enduring affection of fans and co-stars alike. With a foreword from Melissa Gilbert (Laura) and Alison Arngrim (Nellie), this uplifting memoir follows Butler's journey from childhood to the Prairie and beyond. On this week's motivation monday, I'm talking to Alison Arngrim. New York Times Best Selling author of Confessions of A Prairie Bitch: How I Survived Nellie Oleson and Learned to Love Being Hated, Alison Arngrim is best known to viewers world-wide for her portrayal of the incredibly nasty “Nellie Oleson” on the much loved, long running hit television series Little House On The Prairie, and continues to amuse audiences through her many film, television, stage and multi-media appearances. Her one woman show Confessions of a Prairie Bitch, which started at Club Fez in New York in 2002, has now become a world-wide phenomenon, having been performed to packed houses in New York, Los Angeles, Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia, Green Bay, San Francisco, Seattle, and in France, where Arngrim performs entirely in French to standing room only crowds in her all-French version titled: Confessions d'une Garce de La Prairie and La Malle aux Tresors de Nellie Oleson. As a stand-up comedian, Arngrim has headlined at nightclubs such as the Laugh Factory, the Comedy Store and the Improv in Los Angeles; as well as the Laurie Beechman Theatre in New York and assorted comedy venues across the United States and Canada. She is currently starring in two comedy series pilots: Life Interrupted, as the ex-wife of commercial child star Mason Reese, with Erin Murphy, (“Bewitched”) as her new wife and Dawn Wells, (“Gilligan's Island), as her mother, as well as, C.P.R. – Child Performers Resurrection Talent Agency, as an ex-child star gone wrong, trying to save herself and her assorted misfit cohorts by opening a talent agency. Arngrim has mocked her status as an “ex-child star” on Jay Leno's Tonight Show, during their month-long parody, “Hollywood Survivor” and continues to be a frequent interview subject on everything from A&E, “E! Entertainment, TV Land and VH-1, to CNN and the Travel Channel. The TV Land network honored her undying image as TV's worst bitch, by declaring her the winner of their 2006 award for, “Character Most Desperately In Need Of A Time Out.” She starred in the heartwarming, gay, Christmas cult classic, Make the Yuletide Gay, as the overbearing “Heather Mancuso.” Her other television and film appearances include, Livin' the Dream, Tinder & Grinder, The Bilderberg Club, For the Love of May with Ru Paul and Patricia Neal, and The Last Place On Earth with Billy Dee Williams and Phyllis Diller. In 2007, she began her foray into French cinema with the role of “Edith” in the French detective comedy, Jean Pierre Mocky's Le Deal. Her stage work includes, The Vagina Monologs, Sirena: Queen of the Tango, Dear Brutus, The Wool Gatherer, the French bedroom farce, In One Bed And Out The Other, Michael Kearns' AIDS/US II, “Rita” in the 2005 GLAAD Award nominated production of Last Summer At Bluefish Cove, the somewhat off kilter “Reverend Pat Miass” in Joni and Gina's Wedding, and the Ovation Award Nominated musical-drama, Flirting with Morty, as the abusive, trashy and tragic Ray Lee. In her spare time, she takes tourists on the rollicking comedy outing, Nasty Nellie's Tour of Hollywood, (featured at Dearly Departed Tours), where she simultaneously enlightens and amuses passengers with behind the scenes tales from both Hollywood history and her own life. Offstage, Arngrim has been a dedicated and compassionate AIDS activist for nearly three decades, volunteering for AIDS Project Los Angeles and Tuesday's Child, an organization assisting children and families affected by HIV and AIDS. In addition, Arngrim currently serves as California Chair, National Spokesperson and Founding Board Member on the National Advisory Board of The National Association to Protect Children, or PROTECT.org, fighting to give children a legal and political voice in the war against child abuse.
TV's Nellie Oleson joins Rick and Dave and talks about her one-woman show (and book) Confessions of a Prairie Bitch. She has incredible stories about Liberace, Pia Zadora, Carol Channing, Jerry Lee Lewis, and of course, Michael Landon. [Ep174]
**Warning**: If you, like Dean, have never read the beloved novel *Little Women* or watched any of its movie adaptations, brace yourself—you may not fully grasp the emotional weight of today's episode recap: "Little Women"! (Honestly, Dean Butler, how *dare* you!) In this episode, we meet more characters that we end up falling in love with, only to never see them again (you know, the infamous *Vortex of Special Guests* from the multiverse?). But let's get down to the real issues: Why are the wigs so distractingly bad in this episode? Is Jenny indeed Mrs. Beadle's long-lost daughter? Does Nellie's intense, pantomimed sewing session make you...uneasy? And seriously, why does Ma scrubbing the bare floor make you *so* tired just watching it? Plus, Pamela and Alison share their *uncomfortable* “groomer vibes” from one of the main characters, and we take a detour to *Frontier House* on PBS to remind ourselves that a solid stockpile of chopped wood is *essential* for prairie life! Alison also spills the tea on the real-life inspiration for her character, Nellie Oleson, and uncovers some surprising connections to this episode, along with juicy behind-the-scenes gossip about Katherine MacGregor and Jonathan Gilbert! In a moment of sheer brilliance, we even compare the *Little House* characters to Muppets—and yes, we're calling out Miss Piggy specifically! Lastly, Alison cracks the mystery of *why* Baby Carrie takes that tumble down the hill in the opening credits. You won't want to miss it! Then join Pamela, Dean and Alison on Patreon! Cori Rice joins me to discuss this sometimes romantic and sometimes hilarious episode of Little House! “Adam and Luke Simms arrive in Walnut Grove, where Luke quickly falls for Nellie Oleson despite his unconventional appearance—barefoot and in overalls over long underwear—which horrifies Nellie's mother, Harriet, who forbids their relationship. Meanwhile, Luke enlists Mary's help to pick out a ring for Nellie's birthday, but a misunderstanding leads Nellie to believe he's toying with her feelings, prompting her to complain to Miss Beadle, who then confronts Adam Simms and unexpectedly begins to fall for him. As tensions rise, Luke and Nellie decide to elope, marrying and heading to a hotel, only to be tracked down by Harriet, Nels, Adam, and Miss Beadle, setting the stage for a dramatic confrontation. Alongside this, a budding romance blossoms between Miss Beadle and Adam, adding a tender counterpoint to the youthful impulsiveness of Luke and Nellie's union.” Here Come the Brides originally aired on December 5, 1977 The opening song “Albert” is written and performed by the amazing Norwegian band, Project Brundlefly and is used with permission. Arngrim's father, Thor Arngrim, was a Canadian-born Hollywood manager. Her mother, Norma MacMillan of Vancouver, British Columbia, was an actress who provided the voices for characters as Casper on Casper the Friendly Ghost, as Gumby on Gumby, as Davey on Davey and Goliath, and Sweet Polly Purebred on Underdog, as well as other animated children's programs. After beginning a career as a child model and actress in television commercials, Arngrim rose to fame as a child star in 1974, portraying the role of Nellie Oleson on the NBC television series Little House on the Prairie. She originally auditioned for the role of Laura Ingalls and, later, Mary Ingalls, but was instead cast in the role of antagonist Nellie Oleson. Arngrim would play the role of Nellie for seven seasons and her portrayal became a cultural reference and camp archetype for the spoiled "bad girl" throughout the 1970s.[citation needed] Years later, in one of her stand-up routines, Arngrim described playing Nellie on Little House on The Prairie as "like having PMS for seven years." in 2002, she was honored by the Young Artist Foundation with its Former Child Star "Lifetime Achievement" Award for her work as a child actress on Little House. At the 2006 TV Land Awards, Arngrim tied with Danielle Spencer ('Dee' on What's Happening!!) as the "Character Most in Need of a Time-out" for her role as Nellie.
Aimee Muñiz joins the podcast to discuss this heartwarming episode. I hope you enjoy it as much as we did when we recorded it! "As a prank to make him look foolish, the older boys of Walnut Grove school nominate the object of their practical jokes, gentle Elmer Dobkins, to run for class president against popular Mary Ingalls and wealthy Nellie Oleson. While Mary and Nellie wage their campaigns with promises of popcorn and gum balls, Mr. Dobkins witnesses his son being teased by the older boys and, when he finds out why Elmer was nominated, angrily orders him to pull out of the election. But, when election day comes and the race seems too close to call, a cruel act and children tired of being bullied decide the outcome." Picking up right where we left off...Caroline confronts Laura about her misdeeds with Nellie's dinner date with Almanzo. While she's okay with "apologizing" to Nellie, Laura bolts rather than being forced, like a child, to apologize to Almanzo. More than ever Laura is determined to become a woman and she believes accelerating her plan in becoming an educator is the path in doing so. But first she has to pass her final School exam. And the only way to do so is to get the study material from the one person in town whose taken the test...Nellie Oleson. Nellie is nice enough to share the resources material as well as her own experience with taking the test and what to focus on (P.S. History is NOT important). On test day, Laura's dreams of being a graduate are dashed and she realizes that actions have consequences...not only hers but Nellie's. Oh, and Charles is having a hard time with Laura's feelings as she is starting to move towards womanhood. Why did Laura think Nellie would not retaliate for the Cayenne pepper chicken mess? How long before we see Bare-chested Charles again? Should Harriet have considered opening a mud bath spa for Nellie instead of a restaurant? And we are back from the West Coast excursion and it's time to get back to school. The classroom seems different because 1) Ali G is no longer the teacher being replaced by a Miss Eliza Jane Wilder and 2) Nellie Oleson is a graduate/adult. Harriet decides to celebrate this moment by gifting Nellie her very own Hotel and Restaurant to Nellie's disgust. We also find out that Eliza Jane Wilder has a bother: Almanzo "Manny" Wilder. WOOF! You don't need a crystal or magic 8 ball to see this young man is going to amplify the rivalry between Laura and Nellie. Oh, Caroline gets a new job and it's the return of Bare-chested Charles. Man-o-Man what a wild return to the prairie. Does Laura know that her voice overs are actually spoilers? Almanzo/Manny/Manly/Zaldamo...how many names does one person need? An iconic TV character is immortal. That truth has become increasingly official in today's digital age where every episode is but a click away. And as Alison Arngrim has well learned, if you played the villain, folks are still pissed. Alison's portrayal of frontier hellion Nellie Oleson struck such a resonate chord with fans that Alison has learned to embrace the Nellie energy and use it for good. Her book is called, Confessions of a Prairie Bitch: How I survived Nellie Oleson and Learned to Love Being Hated.Raised in a bohemian show-biz family, Alison has been acting since early childhood. Her role as Nellie allowed her to vent the anger she carried due to suffering repeated sexual abuse at the hands of her brother. The power of Nellie gave her a voice to testify before the California State Senate and help create new law that criminalizes incest.Nellie also provided Alison with a platform to advocate for AIDS research, education and outreach when her TV husband and beloved friend Steve Tracy died of the disease. Her traumatic childhood caught up with her after the wonderful distraction of Little House was over and with a compass that points to “Happy,” she walked into a therapist's office at the age of 21 and said, “Here's what happened to me. Let's get to work.”Alison shares loads of backstage Little House stories and talks about her relationships, then and now, with her cast mates and she is definitely up for a round of LHOP Trivia!Plus, Fritz and Weezy are recommending the Barack Obama series, Working: What We Do All Day, on Netflix and Shrinking on Apple +, and we shout out the new album on Band Camp from Media Path friend, Melanie, The Magic Bus.Path Points of Interest:Alison ArngrimConfessions of a Prairie Bitch by Alison ArngrimAlison Arngrim on WikipediaAlison Arngrim on TwitterAlison Arngrim on InstagramAlison Arngrim on FacebookLivin' on a PrairieShrinking - Apple +Working: What We Do All Day on NetflixThe Magic Bus by Melanie
Today on Too Opinionated we visit with actress/comedian Alison Arngrim! The iconic child actor who successfully transitioned into stage, screen and TV star, as well as respected and outspoken activist, not to mention TV Land Award winner, ALISON ARNGRIM, continues to tour the world with her critically acclaimed CONFESSIONS OF A PRAIRIE BITCH. Best known as acid-tongued, pre-Midol meanie Nellie Oleson from "Little House on the Prairie", Alison Arngrim presents an uproarious evening of storytelling, stand-up, and multi media about life as everyone's favorite toxic pre-teen brat, complete with petticoats and ringlets. In addition to seven years on "Little House on the Prairie," Alison has guest starred on "Love Boat" and "Fantasy Island," among others. After her good friend and "Little House" co-star Steve Tracy died of AIDS in 1986, Alison became a prominent AIDS activist with AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). In 1988 Alison spoke before the Presidential Commission on AIDS and was the first woman to receive the "Friend in Deed" award at APLA. In 1992 Alison was presented with a resolution by the Los Angeles City Council commending her on her work on behalf of people living with HIV and AIDS. In 2004, Arngrim revealed to the world that she was sexually molested as a child and joined the advisory board of Protect, a group that fights to give children a voice in the war against child abuse. In 2006, she received the prestigious Justice Award from Justice for Children, a national child protection organization and an award from The National Association to Protect Children. Another milestone in her career happened in 2007 when, after much lobbying, she was proudly placed on Mr. Blackwell's “Worst Dressed List” alongside Victoria Beckham, Lindsay Lohan and Mary-Kate Olsen. The Ingalls take a backseat in this Garvey centric episode. When young Andy Garvey demonstrates less than stellar academic aptitude, school mom Alice Garvey will go to any lengths to help him improve his GPA. Unfortunately, top student Albert is letting his grades slide (and isn't Alice's first choice of tutor) leaving her only one option: Nellie Oleson. Wanting to make his school mom happy with better grades, Andy follows Nellie's lead and starts to cheat. As his grades rise, Andy starts heading down a shame spiral. Even after being confronted by Laura, Andy feels he's in too deep with no way of saving his conscience. It's not until Charles makes his appearance in the episode that Andy starts his way back to being an honest student. Is an F minus really a thing? Albert and Andy are two prairie boys on the edge of their tween years and are starting to test their boundaries. Which doesn't go over well at Plum Creek or the Garvey Estate. Jonathan Garvey shares a childhood trauma inspiring Charles to repeat something similar for the boys. Set to task with crossing the prairie wilderness en route to Sleepy Eye to retrieve a letter and return home safely, Albert and Andy hope to prove themselves as men and make choices like a man. But they are not alone, following behind Charles and Jonathan Garvey are hoping for failure. Tit for tat and back and forth for every good fortune Albert and Andy encounter Charles and Jonathan Garvey endure humiliation and defeat. It's an unintentional father and son camping trip that makes you wonder if Charles is happy he didn't bring his rifle this time. If Andy used Nellie Oleson's talking machine and listened to himself, would he reconsider his desire to quit school? How happy do you think Laura is to have her room back for a few days? Hello Backstory fans! In this great episode we welcome actress, author, and stand up comedian, Alison Arngrim, who played the somewhat mean spirited and snobbish "Nellie Oleson" on the popular tv show "Little House on the Prairie". Alison chats with us about her time on the show of course, and what it was like to play a character that people loved to hate. She wrote a book about the subject, "Confessions of a Prairie Bitch" which was a New York Times Best Seller. Her one woman show of the same name has been performed around the US and Europe. She has also performed in plays, and has appeared in many movies over the years, and is a frequent guest on various tv shows often. Alison also talks about her deep roots in activism, having been involved in AIDS education and awareness, as well as child abuse prevention for many years. While the common perception of the character of "Nellie" is that of a mean girl, Alison is exactly the opposite. Her caring personality, her humor, and her willingness to talk about everything with openness and passion is proof of this. We hope you enjoy this chance to get to know Alison, and we know you will find this interview as enjoyable as we did.

With things at Plum Creek being peaceful, you know it's time to stir the pot. Enter Fagin, a young calf in the back of the wagon, who is gifted to Albert, from Charles, to help teach the both of them about livestock. Albert takes special interest when he learns he could win a prize at the upcoming fair by how well he raises the calf. As Albert and Charles spend more time together, Laura is once again feeling like a third wheel..and sometimes like a spare. Things finally erupt when Laura, egged on by Nellie Oleson, expresses her frustration of feeling, once again, she is losing her Pa to...a brother. When word of this is overheard by Albert, he decides to move on/runaway leaving Laura to take Fagin to the competition at the fair. Prior to the final round of judging for Fagin, Albert is spotted, chased, and finally, caught by Charles. And together they return to see Fagin with a blue ribbon and Laura accepting the award on behalf of her brother. Now that Albert calls Charles Pa and Laura his sister, will he really stop peaking from behind the curtain? Could Harriet have gotten any ice from the ice storage across the way for Nellie's eye or was using a the steak as a cold compression her way of showing off her wealth? New York Times Best Selling author of “Confessions of a Prairie Bitch: How I Survived Nellie Oleson and Learned to Love Being Hated,” Alison Arngrim is best known to viewers world-wide for her portrayal of the incredibly nasty “Nellie Oleson” on the much loved, long running hit television series "Little House on the Prairie," and continues to amuse audiences through her many film, television and stage appearances. Her one woman show “Confessions of a Prairie Bitch”, which started at Club Fez in New York in 2002, has now become a world-wide phenomenon, having been performed to packed houses in New York, Los Angeles, Boston, Chicago, San Francisco, Seattle, and in France, where Alison performs entirely in French to standing room only crowds in her all French version titled: “Confessions d'une Garce de La Prairie”. In 1986 when her friend and "Little House husband" co-star, Steve Tracy, passed away due to complications of HIV/AIDS, Alison began volunteering at AIDS Project Los Angeles. Her duties ranged from working on the Southern California AIDS Hotline and the APLA food bank, to chairing the steering committee of the volunteer speakers bureau and developing “Safer Sex” workshops. She has provided AIDS education to doctors, nurses, prison inmates, service clubs, churches, department stores and schools, written AIDS education articles for the magazines "Frontiers" and "Designers West” and spent seven years hosting the APLA educational cable television show, "AIDS Vision." In 1992, Joel Wachs presented Alison with a resolution by the Los Angeles City Council commending her on her work on behalf of people living with HIV and AIDS. From 1989 through 1993 she served as Program Manager at Tuesday's Child, an organization assisting children and families affected by HIV and AIDS. From 1989 through 2003 she served as both hostess and producer for the comedy stage at the AIDS Project Los Angeles Annual Summer Party, where she helped to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for people living with HIV. She currently serves as California Chair, National Spokesperson and Founding Board Member on the National Advisory Board of The National Association to Protect Children (www.PROTECT.org), fighting to give children a legal and political voice in the war against child abuse. As an activist for the improvement of child protection laws, she has spoken before the California Senate and worked on legislative and political campaigns in several states, including Virginia and New York, in addition to PROTECT's work on federal legislation in Washington, D.C. She has appeared on numerous television news programs discussing the legal and political issues surrounding child abuse and molestation. She came forward to tell the world about the sexual abuse she suffered in her own life, during her 2004 interview on Larry King Live. She continues to be interviewed on this and other topics on Nancy Grace, CNN's Showbiz Tonight, The Insider, Court TV, and Bill O'Reilly's The Factor. She takes pride in the fact that so many people enjoyed hating her as a girl and is more than happy to give them the opportunity to do so in the future. "My fans have proudly taken on the name "Bonnetheads" to designate their love of all things Prairie and many have posted pictures themselves wearing bonnets while they read along at home," remarks Alison. What starts off as a simple frogging expedition one afternoon turns into the moment when Laura starts to feel she is ready to kiss a boy. She's had feelings for boys in the pass, but this is the first time she is ready to try out kissing. In fact she is so interested in kissing, not only does she practice with the mirror up in the loft, she also manages to inquire to Big Sister Mary about the whole experience. In addition she seeks the counseling of someone who was recently married: Nellie Oleson. If that wasn't enough, Laura now feels there is some completion for her potential beau when a new kid shows up at school, showing off all the traits that Laura is now trying to conceal. And when Laura tries to take matters into he own hands, gravity proves that somethings you can't rush. Meanwhile, Charles and Jonathan Garvey have won a freighting competition and the award is a contract job. This job keeps these family men away from home longer than either of them want to be. And they soon realizing that money doesn't always make you happy...in fact it's sort of making them miserable. Did Doc Baker properly set Charles' broken foot before putting a cast on it? How come Mrs. Simms was on screen and nobody called her Mrs. Simms....or even Miss Beadle for that matter? Caroline has spent plenty of time at the little house with Charles gone on long stretches, Why is this time different for her?

Walnut Grove is the new home of Father and Son duo: Adam and Luke Simms. One his first day of school Luke meets Nellie Oleson whom is immediately smitten with the young man. Not only that but her usual solution of getting people to like her, bribery via candy, is not going to work forcing Nellie to step outside of her comfort zone. Speaking of comfort zones, Harriet Oleson is also out of hers when she finds out her daughter is in love with the son of a Pig Farmer. Miss Beadle doesn't seem to mind the pig farmer occupation, in fact she finds any reason/excuse to head to the Simms farm to talk with Adam. And like father, like son, these men end up with a woman by their side. While Miss Beaddle is reluctant to accept the marriage proposal that was offered to her, Nellie and Luke....sell a sow, steal a buckboard and elope to Sleepy eye to find the nearest Justice of the Peace and get married. Needless to say Harriet with the Shotgun (the widow maker) along with Mr. Oleson, Miss Beadle, and Mr Simms head to Sleepy Eye. And while one marriage is dissolved, after a bit of hilarity, a second wedding takes place. Is anyone disappointed we didn't see more of the Ingalllas in the is episode? With the parents away in Sleepy Eye, what sort of hijinks did Willie get into at the Mercantile? How did we get to the beginning of summer with no mention of winter taking place?

Welcome to the Redwood County Fair bringing people together from all around the area for a fulfilled special day. In addition to all of the fantastic food (Candid Apples! Popcorn! Bread and Butter Pickles!) there are plenty of games and even some rides. There is even a Hot air balloon. Among the crowds of fairgoers we're introduced to Patrick, a fellow resident of Walnut Grove, who happens to have some feelings towards Mary. He's not the only one, Cass McCray, owner of the hot air balloon manages to try to persuade Mary to spend the entire day with him. And speaking of the entire day, Caroline spends most of her time entering her wares into the competitions at the exhibit hall. Charles is all over the place from the Wild Jackass riding contest to shopping for Bulls. Laura is mesmerized by everything she sees and even manages to get a job (only for 30 minutes). And Carrie....She's about to have one of the best moments of her young life. Oh and there is a pesky Pickpocket who happens to have more screen time than necessary. Just one of those days at the fair. How many times did Nellie Oleson end up in the dunk tank? Why didn't we ever see Willie Oleson interact with the clowns? Where do they store that state of the art modern fire engine and how far does it travel?
