With the season of food and fullness upon us, in this episode of Ask Alice, she interviews Registered Dietitian and Professor, Dr. Melissa Powell, on ways that parents can help kids - and themselves - survive the season of sweets and stuffed. She explains the notion of mindfulness and intuitive eating, as opposed to the "anything goes" or "forbidden fruit" mentality. While Alice approaches the emotional component of holiday foods, Melissa provides insight on balancing food choices. She also encourages the notion of hospitality by teaching kids a spirit of gratitude and appreciating foods from other cultures and families.Resources:Children Just Like Me: A New Celebration of Children Around the World by DKThe Harvard Nutrition Source Melissa-Powell [at] utc.eduBiblical Wisdom for Teenagers' Eating Habits by Melissa Powell

In this episode, Susan shares two intriguing investigations (“Banana Man” and “Screwdriver Bandit”) that she had the opportunity to work on and elaborates on her role in those cases. Susan gives advice to hiring managers on how to find the best candidate for an agency, and it’s not always the candidate that has the most technical skills or experience; Susan also gives advice to job seekers on alternative options for an analytical career -- options are not just limited to law enforcement or the public sector. As one of the most influential members of IACA, Susan is a pioneer and trendsetter to many of the projects and services offered by the IACA today. Susan provides insights on what it was like being a board member in the different positions that she held (Secretary, VP of Administration, and President) as well as advice to those interested in being more involved with the IACA, especially as a board member. Susan is currently the Director in the Strategic Batch Consulting, Government Education, XML Platforms for LexisNexis, stationed in Washington D.C. Season: Remembering Our Stories Speaker: Ben White Location: 3800 Marlton Pike About Talk: God’s people tell the story. We are limited to our own experience. That’s part of being human. That goes for the people who wrote the Bible, too. This is good news because it helps us understand the strange parts of the Bible that are hard to reconcile with the witness of Jesus, and it invites into the story and into the storytelling. We tell the story now, too. In honor of this good news three stories: St. Valentine, The Burial of Stephen (based on Acts 7 and 8), and Melissa Powell in Nigeria declaring, “If the children don’t eat, I don’t eat.” All three stories have the theme of sacrifice.
We all have to go on our personal odysseys for growth and money or whatever, but it's not until we return home that we see how much we've grown...or regressed. Melissa's Mount Pleasant series shows us the life and times of Iris and her father Henry after she leaves the big city lights for simpler rural times. We talked about the second book in the series "Every Now and Then" and her plans for addressing racial tension in a time where compassion amongst races seems to be waning. Ben was off larping or planting microgreens so Dom handled this biz. Give it a listen..or don't! The least you could do though is check out Melissa's work. Enjoy.
