These two lessons aimed to assist parents in grasping what the self is in order to more clearly aid their child in understanding who they are. We discussed that there are matters essential to our identity with uniquely essential parts of our identity given to us in union with Christ. Beyond the essential matters of identity, there remain “accidental” portions of our identity which require careful instruction from parents to children. Despite the transient nature of these accidental qualities, our essential qualities as Christian, human persons should be brought to bear on these matters. Because of this, every quality about our persons (and every introspective identity thought) should ultimately have its terminus on God, increasing His beauty in our minds and decreasing our prideful self-absorption and idolatry.
Dennis and Dara Aldy, share more from their Parenting Series, as they discuss the topic of Fathers and their important role in their children's life. If you have a question or topic you would like Turning Hearts to discuss, please email:info@thministry.com
This lesson provides a biblical basis for a discussion of "identity" which prepares for part 2, application of identity questions to parenting.
This lesson discussed the Scriptural directives regarding how parents are to transmit the story of God to their children. Some “best practices” on how to accomplish this were offered regarding education generally and spiritual education according to cognition, affection, and volition. Within the topic of spiritual education, the what, who, when/where, and why of discipline were addressed as parents represent the loving chastisement of God our Father. These best practices were considered together in the culminating activities of familial and corporate worship. Lastly, because Scripture sets the provocation of children in direct contrast with raising them to love the Lord, fourteen “worst practices” of provocation were educed for consideration.
Dennis and Dara Aldy continue to share about biblical parenting.Part 2: Needing a Family VisionIf you have a question or topic you would like Turning Hearts to discuss, please email:info@thministry.com

Today we are talking about the last phase in our Slow Parenting Series, the adult years and estrangement.Estrangement happens later in life when a family member cuts off another family member. This could be an adult child deciding to distant themselves from a parent or relative. Many times it is because the adult child is attempting to protect themselves.So... how do you keep your children from becoming estranged from you?Clinical psychologist Lindsay C. Gibson wrote the book "Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents" where she talks about the four types of difficult parents. I am sharing with you more detail on these parenting types and how they can lead to estrangement in the adult childhood years. The emotional parentThe driven parentThe passive parentThe rejecting parentThere are many ways to prevent them from becoming estranged, one of the most simple is having good communication. Say your sorry, show humility, and really work on yourself! Learn more about the four types of parents from Lindsay C. This is week three of our Intentional Parenting Sermon Series, packed with equipping resources for parents and anyone who invests in our next generation. In this sermon, Tyler shared insights from a book by Jonathan Haidt called The Anxious Generation, which argues that in the last few decades, Americans have made two contradictory choices about the safety of our children. We have become way too protective in the real world and not protective enough in the digital world. And guess what? Both are taking a spiritual toll on our kids. Let's be a church that fosters genuine community for our kids and teaches them about their identity in Christ. Let's work to combat what is stealing hope and joy from our kids and set boundaries to protect them. Let's pass down a faith that sustains them for a lifetime. To discover the parent resources for this series, be sure to visit necchurch.org/resources/
The idyllic end of the story is an absolutely essential hope in the parent-child relationship. This ideal is not merely some ethereal, fairy-tale ending; rather, Jesus incarnates and embodies the ideal. At His first coming, He inaugurated the restoration of all things which is first seen in the new nature of Christians. Like all humans, children must participate in the ideal. This is only possible by the Father's election, the Son's accomplishment, and the Spirit's application of redemption. Often through parental evangelism, God frequently and graciously imparts faith to the hearts of children which transforms their cognitive, affective, and volitional heart functions. As more and more hearts are redeemed, the sin issues both within and without of a child begin to disappear as righteousness prevails. Ultimately, these redeemed hearts congregate into a spiritual family called the church. By virtue of Jesus' person and work, the creation mandate is fulfilled in the church which allows all individuals to participate in parent-child relationships despite physical calling. Parents, both physical and spiritual, thus participate in the sanctification of the redeemed hearts found in their children.
These two lessons have attempted to argue that story itself is of principle importance to parenting because story is how we make meaning of the world. Secondary to this then we must be sure that our children are receiving the right story. The story of Christianity offers that the problem of humanity is sin. This sin issue is found both within our child and without the child in the external world. Initially, parents function to protect them from the evils of life, but ultimately, good parents are preparing children to transcend their guardianship in order to dynamically navigate the evils of this life as part of the church.
In week 2 of the Intentional Parenting series, Tyler focuses on The Best Parenting Style According to the Data. Parenting is a significant responsibility that shapes the future of children, influencing not only their character but also their faith. The "Intentional Parenting" sermon series is designed to equip Christian parents with the tools and strategies necessary to raise their children in a faith-centered home. By adopting the authoritative parenting style, engaging in daily faith conversations, and maintaining a united, faith-centered marriage, parents can effectively pass down their beliefs and prepare their children for a life rooted in faith. So, what is your vision for your kids? If it's not centered on Him, it's too small to carry them through this life. If you give them Jesus, no matter where the road leads—you can rest assured knowing that He will be with them. And there's no one better to walk beside them than our King Jesus. Train children to live the right way, and when they are old, they will not stray from it. - Proverbs 22:6
Where do children find themselves in the great story?
In this new series, Intentional Parenting, we will explore what it means and what it takes to pass down our faith to the next generation. We will not just talk about it; we will provide helpful tools and support along the way. In today's message, Tyler focuses on the biggest influence on our kids today. Guess what, parents? It's you! Research indicates that the best predictor of what any American religious life will be like in adulthood is how their parents held their religious beliefs while raising them. The power of parental influence has remained stable since the 1970s; however, there has been a decline in religiosity among American Christians. In this message, we will examine how parents can use their influence to develop faith in their kids that will sustain them for a lifetime. Be sure to check out the parent resource tool to audit your parenting skills and help you understand how you can nurture faith with your kids. A good framework allows both a dynamic, flexible, individualized approach while resisting the relativistic notion that there are no universal principles to be applied.
This this episode of our Slow Parenting Series we are talking about emotional regulation and how we can teach this to our children. To be able to teach emotional regulation to your kids you need to be able to self regulate your own emotions. It is not healthy for children to be in an environment that their caretakers lash out in ways that they can't expect. So you need to take a minute a look within! Where you are is where you are, where you are is not where you want to be and where you want to go. Slow living is about taking steps to get to where you want to go.How do you teach emotional regulation to your kids if your not emotionally regulated yourself? How to implement in your own family?Let's talk about how you can regulate your emotions so that you can be the best version of yourself to teach your own children.Want to know more about living a slowed down life?!Simple Shortcuts to Peace Course - https://stephanieodea.com/peaceNew Year, New You Mini Challenge - https://stephanieodea.com/newyouJoin me for my LIVE Masterclass - https://stephanieodea.com/masterclass/Website - https://stephanieodea.comBlog - https://stephanieodea.com/blog/Slow Living Podcast - https://stephanieodea.com/podcastSpeaking Opportunities - https://stephanieodea.com/speaking/Coaching Opportunities - https://stephanieodea.com/coaching/Courses - https://stephanieodea.com/courses/Contact - stephanieodea.com/contact/
As we continue through the Slow Parenting Series, let's take a pause and go back to the basics. The purpose of slow parenting is to slow down and thoughtfully and purposefully plan what is next. Today we are talking about school age readiness! Heeyy yall!! Last week we kicked off the Parenting Series talking about The Dismissive Mom. So many moms were blessed by that message and even reached out afterwards. Some of them are still reaching out. What I would like to say is that I am so proud of you all for having the courage to listen in, and having the desire to take action, heal, and be better for not only your kids but for yourself. As we mentioned last week. It's not that we don't want to be good parents, sometimes it's just that we feel we don't know how to and as a result we don't. I want you who are listening in to take this opportunity to forgive your parents and grandparents for what they didn't know. Many of them did the best with what they had and were given. Does this make it okay? No. however as parents, and as a mom, what I realized is that I have to extend the same grace that I would hope and pray my children will extend to me one day because they fact of the matter is that we are all still figuring it out. So tonight's message is for those of you who is like, I never had the model. I don't even know where to start. I don't know how to be a mom or a parent.
Heeyyy yall! What I know about God is that He is not only concerned with the material and the outer blessings, He's concerned with us as a whole. God want us thriving in every area, starting with our family. Not enough people in ministry are talking about how to be better parents. As a result, we are left to raise broken children being raised by broken parents, who were once broken children. We pray all the time about breaking generational curses, however we have to put some action behind those prayers. I know I always say that our bible studies are for everyone, including those without children, however if you don't have children yet, you may want to stick around because, if i knew in advance what to do and what not to do, I would have been better for it. I will warn you, or say: Trigger Warning This is not intended to crush you in spirit, the intention is to bring awareness which will bring about change and transformation. Knowledge is power. The bible says in all thy getting, get understanding. We're starting a new series on Parenting and tonight we're touching on the Dismissive Mother and the Cold Mother Syndrome. #dismissiveavoidant #dismissiveparent
Everything right, true, and good has been distorted and spoiled by the world. These counterfeits are being sold to our kids as the real thing; and even many Christian kids are buying it. What can Christian families do? Bucky talks about how deception works, and how teaching biblical discernment will guard and guide your kids in truth. (Parenting Series, Part 2 of 3.)
Modern parenting has made a child's happiness the goal. However, that's not the purpose of parenting given in the Bible. And since God designed and created the family, He knows the best way for families to function. Parents, the only way to know if you're hitting the target is to know God's purpose for parenting. (Parenting Series, Part 1 of 3.)
On this West Virginia Morning, we begin a new series called “Now What? This is quite possibly the MOST REQUESTED topic y'all ask me to talk about when it comes to parenting. That's right... we're talking about PHONES. This conversation will look different for every family and every kid, but it is INEVITABLE that every kid will have access to phones and screens. So how do we help them? What worked 10 years ago, may not work today. Heck, what works now will probably change in 6 months. Technology evolves FAST. If it feels like you can't keep up, I have some ideas. This week, we have two of our very best friends, Blake and Allie. We raised our kids together. At least 50% of the things we tried with our kids, we got from Blake and Allie. WHEN I TELL YOU they have raised 4 of the greatest women on Earth! It's been a joy to watch them grow. In 2011, when I ruined my life and my family's lives, they were the ones that said to me “you can live with us.” (If you don't know this story, you can read about it in my book Kill the Spider). I don't know that my healing could have happened without this family. Now you know the guts of the relationship… Today we talk about the importance of COMMUNITY when parenting… How to create a safe space for our kids to not be okay… The importance of not SHELTERING our kids from real life, but SHEPHERDING them to show the fruits of the Spirit through it all… _______ Purchase my book Kill the Spider HERE: https://www.amazon.com/Kill-Spider-audiobook/dp/B075X1RCJM/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=kill+the+spider+carlos+whittaker+book&qid=1692808769&sprefix=kill+the+spider+%2Caps%2C145&sr=8-1 Watch our swimming with manatees vlog on YouTube HERE: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kROMGYSALaI Get 15% off of my merch with code SUMMER HERE: https://loswhits-merch.myshopify.com/ You can find me on Instagram (@loswhit) here: https://bit.ly/CarlosIGNotes Purchase your copy of my new book, How to Human, HERE: https://bit.ly/HowtoHumanNotes Let's keep in touch! My kids' therapists are here!! I am SO grateful for David Thomas and Sissy Goff. They are the hosts of the Raising Boys and Girls podcast and are SO wise. They are also both Executive Directors of Daystar Counseling Ministries here in Nashville, TN. With a combined 50+ years of experience, they KNOW what they are talking about!!! I've had each of them on separate episodes but never together. YOU AIN'T READY FOR THIS! You are going to need to grab a journal and a pen because some of what they share will literally change your life. We lean into boys, we lean into girls, we lean into socialized behavior, we lean into medicated behavior, we lean into girls anxiety and perfectionism and how we tend to ask boys about what they do or think RATHER than how they feel. This episode is PACKED. I cannot tell you enough about how this episode will impact you!! ____ Learn more about Daystar HERE: https://www.daystarcounseling.com/ Listen to Raising Boys and Girls HERE: https://pod.link/1366344369 Pre-Order Sissy's brand new book The Worry-Free Parent HERE: https://www.amazon.com/Worry-Free-Parent-Living-Confidence-Your/dp/0764241028/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2P93DGMXE16XS&keywords=worry+free+parent+sissy+goff&qid=1692213411&sprefix=worry+free+%2Caps%2C143&sr=8-1 Purchase your copy of my new book, How to Human, HERE: https://bit.ly/HowtoHumanNotes Let's keep in touch!
