Astronomy Daily · S05E164 “Eclipse Eve” · Tuesday 11 August 2026. Sources are primary/agency where possible; aggregator dates were checked against originals. In this episode •    LEAD — The 12 August total solar eclipse: the only total eclipse of 2026 and the first over mainland Europe since 1999. Totality arcs from Siberia over the North Pole to eastern Greenland, western Iceland, northern Spain and a sliver of Portugal; maximum totality ~2 min 18 s. Partial for much of North America near sunset; not visible from Australia. ESA livestreams from the Javalambre Observatory, Spain. •    MIDDLE 1 — A state CASC Long March 7A exploded ~85 seconds after lifting off from Wenchang on 10 August, a total loss (payload reported as the Zhongxing-4B communications satellite). Separately, Landspace's private Zhuque-3 was on the same-night manifest from Jiuquan for its second propulsive landing-legs recovery attempt — outcome unconfirmed at recording. China's first orbital-booster landing (net-capture, Long March 10B) already succeeded on 10 July. •    MIDDLE 2 — The Perseids peak overnight 12–13 August under a New Moon — the darkest conditions in roughly two decades. Parent comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle. Realistic ~30–50 meteors/hr from dark sites (nominal ~100), with a slim chance of a dust-trail boost; the next confidently forecast outburst is 2028. •    MIDDLE 3 — Japan's H3 launched Michibiki No. 7 (QZS-7) from Tanegashima, bringing the Quasi-Zenith Satellite System up to the strength Japan needs to run it as a standalone service — a regional navigation layer that keeps a satellite near the zenith over Japan/Asia-Pacific, reinforcing GPS and building navigation resilience. The satellite also hosts a US Space Force space-surveillance sensor (SACHI). •    CLOSER — Both-hemispheres skywatch: eclipse viewing times (totality window ~16:58–18:34 UT, greatest ~17:46 UT) and the ISO 12312-2 eye-safety rule; Perseid how-to for the North (best 2 a.m.–dawn); and Southern-Hemisphere content — pre-dawn planets, evening Venus, Comet 10P/Tempel 2. Eye safety •    A partial eclipse is never safe to view with the naked eye. Use ISO 12312-2 certified eclipse glasses/viewers, or indirect projection (pinhole). Direct viewing is only safe during true totality, and only inside the path (Greenland, Iceland, Spain). Dutch journalist and podcaster Rico Brouwer discusses the fallout of COVID-19 and his successful legal battle against the Dutch state to protect the rights of independent journalists to film court cases, framing it as a victory against government overreach. He talks EU, WW3, and also comments on the Great Reset project to strip us of our assets, citing examples in Holland of unrealized capital gains proposals. Given his background in IT, he touches on the loss of individual agency in a cloud-based digital economy. Finally, he pays tribute to the late John C. Dvorak, reflecting on the changing landscape of independent media and the proliferation of influence operations within the podcasting space. They are made by Rico Brouwer from Almere. Usually in my studio at home, sometimes on location such as at a demonstration. Since the 2008 financial crisis, I've been trying to read and listen to podcasts a lot to find out and understand what's going on around me in the world you don't hear about on TV. The podcast has existed since December 20, 2018 with a broadcast every week about activism, (geo) politics and what is current. “Potkaars – talk to everyone” who does things, activists and specialists who provide interpretation. People who give me hope. Potkaars is the report of my search. After my training as a Social Pedagogical Counselor I worked in ICT at ao. Tridion, ING, the Academic Computing Center Amsterdam and as a teacher at Global Knowledge. The crisis in 2008 changed my view of the world and it brought me back to school. In 2014 I became an activist. The reason was when – after Edward Snowden – Bolivian President Evo Morales' plane was grounded in the EU on behalf of the United States because Morales joked that he might grant Snowden asylum and take him with him from Moscow. “If the power in the Netherlands lies in The Hague, then perhaps the way to make things better is through politics? ” I would try and so I became a politician in the 2017 House of Representatives elections: candidate # 3 and campaign leader for the Pirate Party. After those elections, I continued as an activist with “Real Fairytales”. In music these are the reverse of fake news: the difficult themes in fun songs. In 2018 I became a journalist. Now I do interviews with specialists on all subjects from all over the world. What my guests share is a message of hope. I am writing a book about and with whistleblowers and live with my wife, our two children and the dog Sachi – in the Verzetwijk of Almere. *Podcast intro music used with permission is from the song “The Queens Jig” by the fantastic “Musicke & Mirth” from their album “Music for Two Lyra Viols”: http://musicke-mirth.de/en/recordings.html (available on iTunes or Amazon)

There is something very easy and generous about the way Reki Reinantha tells his story. He came to Australia from Indonesia as a high school student, began studying architecture, then slowly found himself pulled towards the kitchen and the pleasure of making people happy through food. Since then, his path has taken him through Japanese restaurants, major hospitality groups, pop-ups, setbacks and, eventually, businesses of his own. Since then, his path has taken him through Japanese restaurants, major hospitality groups, pop-ups, setbacks and, eventually, ventures of his own. Today, that includes Sachi, his seafood and sushi restaurant built around the idea that exceptional Japanese food can be both highly skilled and genuinely accessible; Atsu, which has earned a loyal following for its fun katsu, skewers and highballs; and Common Cuts, a newer venture that applies the same philosophy of quality and approachability to Melbourne's steakhouse scene. But what stayed with me most was not the scale of what he has built. It was the way he talks about the people around him: the responsibility of leading a team and the very lovely belief that good things happen when you are surrounded by good people. Listening to Reki, it becomes clear that the restaurants are only part of the story. At the heart of everything he has created is a commitment to community, opportunity and the relationships that make hospitality.

Child Life On Call: Parents of children with an illness or medical condition share their stories with a child life specialist

This week's guests, perinatal mental health therapists Emily Souder and Mahaley Patel, share the story behind their book Your NICU Story: Reflecting on Your Family's Experience—a guided journal created to help families process the emotional impact of a NICU stay. Mahaley also opens up about her daughter, Sachi, who died after a NICU stay, and how storytelling and narrative healing became a lifeline in her grief. She and Emily talk with Katie about why so many NICU parents carry trauma long after discharge and how writing your story can help families reconnect with what they experienced. They also discuss the emotional weight of making medical decisions during a NICU stay, the importance of compassionate healthcare providers, and why healing sometimes begins months or even years later. If you've ever struggled to process a NICU experience—or wondered how to revisit it in a way that feels safe and meaningful—this conversation offers powerful insight and hope. Emily and Mahaley's biggest message? Your story deserves space, compassion, and time—and reflecting on it can be an important step toward healing. Breaking Barriers & Pioneering PursuitsOn the latest episode of Rising Tide, bodysurfer David Helvarg and board surfer Natasha Benjamin sit down with photographer, filmmaker, and journalist Sachi Cunningham — a woman who has spent more than two decades pointing her lens at the pioneers rewriting what's possible in big wave surfing.Cunningham helped build the LA Times video team from the ground up, producing the award-winning Chasing the Swell series and documenting the historic first women's heats at Mavericks, the legendary big wave break that rises from the deep-water canyon just south of San Francisco. Now living within earshot of Ocean Beach, she's putting the finishing touches on her first major documentary, Big Wave Women — a film tracking the hard-won fight for pay equity among the elite athletes drawn, or perhaps driven, to ride some of the most dangerous walls of water on the planet. The conversation ranges wide: the cameras she trusts in the impact zone, the technical and physical demands of shooting from inside the surf, and a recent piece she wrote examining the geology and marine ecosystems that make Mavericks not just a spectacle, but a living seascape. Doch was ist Ironie überhaupt? The Surfer’s Journal presents Soundings with Jamie Brisick

For more than two decades, Sachi Cunningham has been training her lens on women and the pioneers of big-wave surfing. After earning a BA in history from Brown University and a Masters of Journalism from UC Berkeley, Cunningham started the first video team at the LA Times, where she produced the award-winning series Chasing the Swell, which documents the first ever Big Wave World Tour. She was the first person, male or female, ever to have water shots published of wily Ocean Beach.  Other "firsts" include serving as the first female board member of Save the Waves Coalition and first woman to receive the Wave Saver Award from the non-profit. She documented the first women's heats at the Mavericks WickrX Invitational, the Puerto Escondido Big Wave Challenge, the Da Hui Backdoor Shootout, and The Eddie. Cunningham has been included in both Surfline's list of top filmmakers and Surfer magazine's list of top photographers. Her feature-length documentary, SheChange, about the quest for pay equity in big-wave surfing, is presently in post-production, and has been featured in the New York Times and on the Today show. A mental health advocate and cancer survivor, Cunningham lives with her husband and daughter in the Outer Sunset neighborhood of San Francisco, where she's a Professor Emerita at San Francisco State University. In this episode of Soundings, Cunningham sits down with Jamie Brisick to talk about shooting from the water at Ocean Beach and Maverick's, the importance of journalism, her quiver, motherhood, and her battle with cancer. Produced by Jonathan Shifflett. Music by PazKa (Aska Matsumiya & Paz Lenchantin).

What if the secret to living longer isn't found in cutting-edge supplements or complex biohacking, but in the timeless wisdom of Japanese rural communities? In this revealing conversation, 63-year-old biohacker and Ikigai Diet expert Sachiaki Takamiya shares groundbreaking findings from the World Longevity Summit held in Kyotango, Japan – a remarkable longevity hotspot with three times more centenarians than the national average.Forget what you thought you knew about Okinawa. The latest research shows other Japanese regions now lead in longevity statistics, with Kyotango emerging as a living laboratory for understanding what truly contributes to a long, healthy life. Through the Kyotango Longevity Cohort Study, researchers have identified four interconnected pillars that support exceptional longevity: a primarily plant and fish-based diet rich in fiber, functional movement integrated into daily life, strong community connections, and a deep sense of purpose through contributing to others.Sachi challenges Western misconceptions about ikigai, explaining how this concept relates to longevity in more nuanced ways than typically portrayed. Rather than simply "following your passion," the ikigai that supports longevity comes from feeling needed by others and having meaningful ways to contribute to your community. This perspective transforms how we might approach purpose in our later years. The conversation explores practical applications of these principles, from the ideal ratio of plant to animal proteins (hint: it's 50/50), to simple movements that maintain crucial functional abilities like walking speed and grip strength. You'll learn about "Mago wa Yasashii Koku," the Japanese mnemonic for remembering essential food categories, and how community-based exercise naturally combines physical activity with social connection.Whether you're fascinated by Blue Zones research, interested in Japanese culture, or simply want to understand how to live better for longer, this episode offers accessible wisdom that stands in refreshing contrast to complicated health protocols. Connect with Sachiaki through his YouTube channel "The Ikigai Diet Channel" or website theikigaidiet.com to continue your journey toward a more balanced, connected approach to longevity.

This format is a little different from our normal show. It's a lot less formal, you'll hear some jokes and laughter, but really it's just four guys who all really care about agtech and its ability to improve agriculture in the future. If you've been around agtech circles for very long, especially if you're on LinkedIn, you know all three of our guests today: Walt Duflock is the vice president of Innovation at Western Growers, which represents family farmers growing fresh produce in Arizona, California, Colorado and New Mexico. Sachi Desai is with Bayer Crop Science. He has over 20 years of experience in AI and machine learning research, development and application across multiple industries including agriculture. Rishi Pethe has guest hosted this show a number of times. He is the author and publisher of the twice weekly newsletter, Software is Feeding the World. He also just released a whitepaper today which is a practical guide to generative AI and explains how organizations can go past proof of concept phase of these new capabilities. Make sure you go download that. I'll leave a link for that in the show notes. I will also leave a link in the show notes where you can read the Agtech Alchemy Quarterly, which is what we're going to talk about in today's episode. I knew it would be filled with insights, but it surpassed my expectations, and it's 116 pages long, so obviously we will just barely scratch the surface in today's episode. Make sure you go read the full digest to understand what's happening today in agtech. It was really cool to read thought pieces from creators back-to-back in the same document. I started making connections that I don't think I would have made if I read them independently. If I had to summarize an overall theme for this one, it would be an exploration of if and when technology can be a true competitive advantage. There is a lot of talk of AI, especially generative AI, but the pieces run the gamut. Rico Brouwer joins us again from the Netherlands to discuss his relentless activism and how he feels the world is headed in a mad direction. He comments on the alternative media space, particularly in the Netherlands, and the censorship, narcissism, and financial difficulty in the industry. Tyranny is descending upon the West, but he also sees hope because the news of this totalitarianism is spreading quickly thanks to the internet. He comments on the idea of strategic relocation and his venture to Paraguay. Europe and the EU is a jurisdiction you want to move out of. They will take us to war. He remains hopeful and focuses on changing the world for the better. Watch on BitChute / Brighteon / Rokfin / Rumble / Substack Geopolitics & Empire · Rico Brouwer: Escape From the West!
