[originally published on Patreon February 15, 2024] Today I discuss more criminals involved in the banana trade, introducing the Vaccaro Brothers and Sam the Banana Man Zemurray. I discuss that intersection between organized crime and Wall Street that intersected precisely in the banana trade through these figures. I go through Zemurray's career, from his start in Alabama, his Cuyamel Fruit Company, the Honduran coup of 1911 and the concurrent takeover of Honduran national debt by JP Morgan bank, and the ensuing takeover of Honduras by United Fruit Company. Then, I discuss Zemurray's takeover of United Fruit Company (brokered by Sullivan & Cromwell) as well as the decisions Zemurray took at the helm of the company. After that, I discuss Zemurray's role in the creation of the modern state of Israel, especially regarding the multiple votes at the United Nations for the Partition Plan for Palestine in 1947. Then, I cannot avoid discussing Zemurray's children who just so happened to have become scholars of Central American studies. [note: at the time I wrote and recorded this episode, I had not purchased The Heritage of the Conquistadors: Ruling Classes in Central America from Conquest to the Sandinistas by "Samuel Z. Stone", but I subsequently purchased the book and confirmed that it does not mention Samuel Zemurray or Cuyamel whatsoever. The book does mention United Fruit Company, though the author does not see fit to mention that his grandfather at one time ran said company.] Finally, I end the episode mentioning the Melville Collective's guerrilla actions against UFC offices in 1969. Songs: Osbie's Banana Song by the Thomas Pynchon Fake Book Yes, We Have No Bananas by Louis Prima

In the next episode titled "Tony Bloody Alcock: Mad Monday Mayhem," listeners will be in for a treat as Taz, also known as "Taz the Banana Man" from his calls to the Alpha Blokes Podcast, shares a series of entertaining and wild stories.Taz kicks off by revealing his past as a football player, with a nod to his coach, Kevin Langer (brother of Alan Langer), from the Innisfail Leprechauns. He recounts a humorous incident from 2000 when the Broncos faced the Roosters, and Kevin played a prank on the team involving a switch from beer to coffee. The episode takes a mischievous turn as Taz recalls a prank involving money attached to a fishing line near a pub, leading to a near-miss incident with a child and a car. The night's antics continue with Taz and his friends commandeering road closed signs, creating their own private party zone on the street, much to the confusion of the local police.Knuckles then shares his own tale of pranking in Rockhampton, involving stealing and creatively relocating 'for sale' signs around a friend's house. The conversation shifts to the excitement and wildness of 'Mad Monday' celebrations, highlighting the intense, often outrageous end-of-season festivities in sports teams. The episode also delves into the world of martial arts, with Taz sharing a story about being unexpectedly put to sleep with a rear-naked choke by his friend's son after a few drinks.Lastly, Taz talks about a prank involving speed camera cars. He describes how his friend bought a car identical to those used by the police for speed monitoring and fooled unsuspecting drivers by flashing lights at them, mimicking a speed camera operation. This episode promises a mix of humor, nostalgia, and a touch of the absurd, capturing the essence of Taz's adventurous and playful spirit. Season 5 of the Alabama Short Stories podcast is just around the corner, and I can't wait for it to get started. Hey, this is Shawn Wright, your host for another trip around the state of Alabama to learn about the characters that make Alabama, well… Alabama. I am going to kick off the season with a story about Sam the Banana Man and his role in getting the banana that's sitting on your counter from Central America to you just so you can throw it out when it's too ripe. There's a story about Shorty Price. If you grew up an Alabama fan, I am sure your ears just perked up. Auburn fans, you won't want to miss this one. There is Alabama's first Miss America who inadvertently helped start the Miss USA pageant. A Supreme Court justice whose appointment was almost derailed because of an initiation at a Klan rally at Edgewood Lake in what would become Homewood. I tell the story of Truman Capote and Harper Lee growing up together in Monroeville and it being told on the silver screen in a little movie called “To Kill A Mockingbird.” Have you ever heard of it?There is the story of Carrie Tuggle, who, wanting to keep black children out of adult jails, built the Tuggle Institute and helped start the Jefferson County Family Court. John Henry was a steel-driving man, and some people think this folk hero's tale of his race against a steam power drill happened close to Dunnavant and not in West Virginia. Regions Bank lights up the Birmingham night sky during the holidays, and Alabama Power builds a lake that fills up much faster than everyone expects. Our final story, just in time for Veteran's Day, is about how Veteran's Day got its start in Birmingham, thanks to the efforts of Raymond Weeks. Season 4 Episode 4 of Spider-Man: The Animated Series is “The Return of Kraven” The third entry in the loose trilogy of Kraven appearances is here to be side-tracked by conversations about racism and Bananaman. But back to the episode, we've got a mysterious creature on the loose and a hunt through the jungles of … Continue reading S4E4 – Somehow, Kraven Returned →
Bill Olsen aka Bananaman, founder and iron fisted overlord of Code Red Releasing has finally shuffled off the proverbial grocery store shelf and into the great smoothie beyond. To honor him, we've hand selected two of his most well regarded releases. We kick things off with the Australian, Terminator/Aliens/Blade Runner by way of boob armor and the outback in The Time Guardian (1987). Then we witness soggy, sweaty Jason Miller slow-jog his way through the jungle to help rescue some 34 year old teens who fall on the wrong side of the least capable South American kidnappers in Toy Soldiers (1984). This week on Junk Food Dinner, while Sean is out exploring Japan, we go back to the original JFD recipe and conjure up the ghost of original JFD host Mr. Mark Freado Jr. to explore three very different flicks. Up first, Count Dracula has opened his castle up to tourist in an attempt to find a rare blood type to bring his long dormant wife back to life. When he finds the blood type among a group from Playboy Magazine, he is able to bring her back, only this time she's black! Hijinks ensue in 1974's Old Dracula (AKA Vampira). Then, we sample an 80's horror flick from Mexico (but filmed in Texas) about a group of college kids who accidentally raise the dead only to be picked off one by one and also put a young group of trick 'r treaters in danger in Cemetery of Terror from 1985. And finally, we get the not-so-true story of the rise of America's foremost parody song writer in Weird: The Al Yankovic Story from 2022. All this plus we catch up with what Mark has been up to since we last talked, Godzilla Day, we pay respect to Banana Man, hot new blu-rays and so much more.LISTEN NOW:MP3 Direct DonloydAlso, if you like the show, please take a minute and subscribe and/or comment on us on iTunes, Stitcher, Blubrry or Podfeed.net. S3E18 - Jake deals with some deep self actualization, and Finn ain't havin' none of it! Plus, we get introduced to the legendary Banana Man, who is definitely the butt of one of the Banana Guards IMHO. Gonna be a fun episode y'all!

Standing on the shoulders of giants (Brendy and Pip and everyone else who did the podcast before us) means we have reached episode 200 of The Electronic Show podcast! Wowzer! Thanks for being with us for this record-breaking feat. We asked for suggestions and received many excellent ones, but in the end we went with a suggestion from Jonathon which, at the time we recorded, I did not realise would be instantly revealed by the episode title. Cheers to you all! For such a potentially ridiculous theme, the lads have brought some quite serious and sensible suggestions to the table. I can't apologise enough. We do have a long discussion about Banana Man, and this week our Cavern Of Lies is a lovely special reader mailbag which I unfortunately introduce in an accidentally insulting way.
It's been a long time since we did any podcasting, how do we do this? I forgot. Maybe it's because we have Changnesia. I don't know much about Changnesia, but not knowing about Changnesia IS a symptom of Changnesia so that tracks. Or does it? No. No none of this makes any sense. But here we are talking about it anyway because that's what we do. Also, naturally, we spread the lore of the Bananaman. Ben dresses up in a banana costume. Mike opens up a fresh pack of hell for that good good shuffle.

An egg is of course the fertilized ovum of an animal that grows and develops as an embryo inside some kind of organic vessel. And as delicious as that sounds, they are only to be consumed when they are hot, never cold as everyone in their right mind truly understands. Last week you may recall Sidey snorting with derision at the thought of compiling a Top 5 Eggs but it turns out Howie was some kind of egg savant, listing numerous egg or egg related scenes and movies in a matter of seconds. Sadly our favourite ginger insult magnet isn't joining us this week and neither is Bad Dad Dan, still journeying in far flung places, which is a shame because the pun potential as far as eggs are concerned is cracking. Should I make a few of my own? Maybe I'll whisk it. Jane Campion won the Best Director Oscar at the 94th Academy Awards, which was a sterile affair with very few incidents to note of any kind, for the THE POWER OF THE DOG, which is definitely NOT a western. In 1925 Montana, wealthy cattle farm owner George Burbank (Jesse Plemons) marries widower Rose Gordon (Kirsten Dunst), much to the anger of George's brother Phil (Benedict Cumberbatch), a macho, vicious bully who prefers spending his days working the ranch and his evenings tormenting Rose. As Rose's son Peter (Kodi Smit-McPhee) begins to spend more time with Phil, a more complicated picture emerges. Is Phil a desperately repressed and lonely individual pining for his former lover? Or are we watching the grooming process of a sexual predator? A fascinating and often very beautiful movie with stunning cinematography, this was liked or loved by all of us to some degree or another. Like an arthouse period drama slash revenge thriller, with a straightforward narrative that was more a triumph of mood and tone for my money. Well worth checking out. But not a western. Peter's refusal to honour the central conceit of the show and instead focus on his childhood favourites continues as we look back at BANANAMAN. Essentially the DC superhero Shazam! but for Bananas, when schoolboy Eric eats a Banana he becomes the potassium filled superhero. We review season 2 episode 3's "Trouble At The Mill" in which our hero runs afoul of his villainous counterpart Appleman. This British animation classic features The Goodies who were less than impressed by the final product apparently and even back in the day I wasn't all that keen on this beyond the theme tune. But what a theme tune it was!We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. Try us on twitter @dads_film, on Facebook Bad Dads Film Review or on our website baddadsfilm.com.
