Every year, The Brian Lehrer Show asks you to submit the best photo you took that is sitting on your phone – and every year, you deliver with some truly impressive snaps!  This year, you submitted over 1,000 photos! Our partners at Photoville, along with a special guest judge, documentary photographer and writer Meryl Meisler, picked out their favorites (check out their 'Top 50' gallery), and then Brian and the team joined in to help select three winners to present their photos on the air. Brian speaks with Meryl Meisler and Laura Roumanos, executive director and co-founder of Photoville, about the three winning photos, which you can see below. Plus, hear the winning photographers talk about their submissions. Partner's Note: Photoville will be celebrating it's 13th festival this year with a city-wide celebration in June. Click here to learn more about the festival, as well as this non-profit and their education and public programs. This Year's Winners: Alfield Reeves's "Grandma"   While visiting home (Monrovia, Liberia, West Africa) for my father surprise 60th birthday party I got to spend a lot of time with my family, including my grandmother. So while the family was in the kitchen hanging out and enjoying each others company I capture this candid of her just observing. (Alfield Reeves)     Deborah Seidman's Are you running away from home? Chelsea, Manhattan NY: Taken in September on a side street of Manhattan. Begs the question of running away, homelessness, hoarding. Which one is this? (Deborah Seidman)   Karl Wagenführ's Death Defying Squirrel Out Our 12th Floor Window Hackensack, NJ: One day there was a knock on our balcony door; being as we are on the top (12th) floor of our building, this was odd. Looked out to see a squirrel on our porch trying to get in. It had climbed up our building, balcony to balcony, and was now panicked because it couldn't go any higher, and didn't know how to get down. This photo was snapped as it attempted to climb up from our window to the roof, which it couldn't manage because of the metal flashing to prevent exactly this. I finally had to persuade our panicked guest (with a broom) to go to the corner of the building, where it finally turned around, and climbed down the brickwork all the way to the ground. Meryl Meisler was born 1951 in the South Bronx and raised in North Massapequa, Long Island, NY. Meryl began photographing herself, family, and friends while enrolled in a photography class taught by Cavalliere Ketchum at The University of Wisconsin, Madison. In 1975, Meryl returned to New York City and studied with Lisette Model, photographing her hometown and the city around her. After working as a freelance illustrator by day, Meryl frequented and photographed the infamous New York Discos. Meisler began releasing large bodies of previously unseen work. Meryl's first monograph, A Tale of Two Cities: Disco Era Bushwick (Bizarre, 2014), received international acclaim. The book juxtaposes her zenith of disco photos with images of the burned-out yet beautiful neighborhood of Bushwick, Brooklyn in the 1980s.  Her latest monograph, New York PARADISE LOST Bushwick Era Disco (Parallel Pictures Press 2021). Meryl lives and works in New York City and Woodstock, NY, continuing the photographic memoir she began in 1973 – a uniquely American story, sweet and sassy with a pinch of mystery. Meryl Meisler is an acclaimed photographer known for her street and documentary work. Meisler began photographing in the mid-70s, focusing on the Jewish community in her hometown on Long Island as well as the nightlife scene in NYC. After becoming an art and photography teacher at a public school in Bushwick, Brooklyn, she continued to shoot the world and people around her. Following her retirement in 2007 that she began to delve into her old, boxed-up contact sheets and negatives—revealing a New York that was long gone, captured in a totally individual and unique manner. Since then Meisler's photographic career has had a renaissance; publishing three books of her photographs—centering mostly on Bushwick, disco and Long Island suburbia—and has participated in countless gallery exhibitions. She joins host Laura McLaws Helms to discuss her childhood, NYC in the 70s and 80s, her creative process, balancing a full-time job and her creative pursuits, and her future projects. There is a vibrance, a joy, and a love for photography that one feels when speaking with Meryl Meisler.  It's also very cool that by day she was a high school art teacher in Brooklyn and, by night, dancing and photographing at legendary clubs like Studio 54. Anyway, that's just how I see it. Of course, there's a lot more to Meisler's photography than just 1970s disco and 1980s Bushwick, and we talk about a wide range of subjects on this episode of the B&H Photography Podcast.   Meisler's latest book, New York PARADISE LOST Bushwick Era Disco, is a wonderful look back at two very different versions of New York. It juxtaposes images she took in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Bushwick and those in the clubs and discos of Manhattan. We speak about how photography starts conversations, and how we can feel more confident with a particular camera, whether medium format, FUJIFILM X series, or a Canon point-and-shoot. We also discuss editing and maintaining a large body of work over a period of decades, studying with Lisette Model, balancing a photography practice with a full-time job, and an upcoming exhibit of Meisler's work to be held at the same public school at which she taught.   Join us for this uplifting conversation and check out Meisler's extended exhibition at The Center for Photography at Woodstock, through September 15, 2021. Meryl Meisler: The Best of Times, Worst of TimesMarch 22 - July 23, 2021Kathleen O. Ellis GalleryIn Light Work’s early days, during the 1970s and 80s, many artists arrived for their month-long residency with no specific plans for using their time. With only a camera and a vague idea of exploring, they walked the streets of Syracuse, open to the synchronicity of what might happen. Incredible photographs ensued and the artists often called them gifts. Grateful to land in the right place at the right time, they discovered images on their contact sheets that startled and delighted them. But they also saw photography as more than random luck. It was both a collaboration and a conversation. They saw themselves as witnesses.Over the same decades, Meryl Meisler was photographing her life in and around New York City with the same sense of exploration and possibility as those pioneering Light Work AIRs. Retiring from decades as a public-school art teacher, Meisler began to unearth and rethink her own archive. Part time capsule of the 70s and 80s and part memoir, Best of Time, Worst of Times is an invitation to join her for a wild ride—disco nights, punk bars, strip clubs, Fire Island, family, friends and neighbors, and suburban Long Island. Her exuberant celebration of human connection is particularly poignant now, when we can take none of these gatherings for granted. Meisler clearly celebrates with her subjects. These are her people: she is not an outsider but a participant. She depicts our own shared humanity, humor, and joy.“I want to show you who I am,” she says now. “My identity as a woman, Jew, lesbian, middle- class teacher, Baby Boomer, New Yorker, liberal, American—and so much more—influences how I perceive and create art about the world around me. I’ve only just begun revealing my huge photography archive. Well this is a strange session—but on so many levels. First of all, Meryl Meisler was Dylan's digital art teacher when he was in 7th Grade. They haven't seen each other in ten years-since school really-and meet up IRL in the studio. Loved seeing them together and hearing in their reflections how they affected each other. Meryl got Dylan into her first film festival as a kid! The other part of this session is between Dylan and myself, with Meryl taking the shrink role. I had offended Dylan about four years ago when we were on stage together. And that's all I'm saying. This is the closest I've come to crying on the mic though! And with all this going on, we barely got to touch on the fact that Dylan is the current Miss Subways!! https://www.nytimes.com/2019/10/08/nyregion/Miss-Subways-NYC.html Here's some info about Meryl Meisler, an incredible photographer artist. You can see her work and all that stuff here: Her bio is too long for this post but you'll recognize these places in it: Meisler has received fellowships, grants and residencies from the New York Foundation for the Arts, Light Work, YADDO, The Puffin Foundation, Time Warner, Artists Space, C.E.T.A., the China Institute and the Japan Society. Her work has been exhibited at the Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn Historical Society, Dia Art Foundation, MASS MoCA, Islip Art Museum, Annenberg Space for Photography, the New Museum for Contemporary Art, New-York Historical Society, Steven Kasher Gallery, The Whitney Museum of American Art and in public spaces including Grand Central Terminal, South Street Seaport, Photoville and throughout the NYC subway system. Full bio here. More about Dylan Mars Greenberg: It's insane how much great work she's accomplished and she's only 22! The most inspiring way to find out about Dylan is from this wonderful documentary by Piano Whitman that I totally recommend: http://nobudge.com/main/woman-from-mars. And here's a headline from when she was only 19! "How a 19 Yr Old Directed & Sold 6 Feature Films with Dylan Mars Greenberg". More about his seven feature films and music videos with notable artists on her Wikipedia page here.

"It’s our season finale, and we’re thrilled to close out a summer of Bushwick stories by partnering with our friends at the new community media project, This Bushwick Life. Together, we sat down with an artist whose work captured Bushwick at one of its most defining moments: the early 80s. In that time, she lived many lives, from disco club kid to Bushwick public school teacher, but through it all, she was one thing more than any other: a photographer. This week, we’re stepping into Bushwick’s Past with an intimate conversation with one of the community’s longtime chroniclers: Meryl Meisler. AFTER THE EPISODE: We’d like to extend our gratitude to Meryl, who was incredibly gracious and generous with her time, for joining us in the studio to share her memories, and her work, from Disco Era Bushwick. You can find out more at her website (http://www.merylmeisler.com) and her Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/merylmeisler/). We’d also like to thank our friends at the new community media project, This Bushwick Life, for making this episode possible. This Bushwick Life was created in July of 2018 to promote the Bushwick residents, local businesses, and community organizations that make the neighborhood a better place to live, work, and visit. Their mission is to create awareness, make introductions, and strengthen ties between people in the community. No story is too small, and nobody is too cool. If you want to learn more, or you’ve got something to share, you can visit them at their website (https://www.thisbushwicklife.com), check out their Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/thisbushwicklife/), or get in touch directly at info@thisbushwicklifelife.com. We’d of course, also like to thank you so much for joining us this week, and throughout this season. None of this would be possible without your support. We’ll be taking a brief break before returning this Fall, with more of Bushwick’s incredible stories. But in the meantime, we’d love to know what you’re interested in hearing, and how we can do better. Get in touch by emailing us at hello@hearbushwick.com, or by DM’ing us on our instagram (https://www.instagram.com/bushwickpodcast/). We can’t wait to hear from you, and we’ll see you soon."
