La semana pasada Donald Trump publicó en Truth Social un mensaje apoyando a Ucrania en su lucha por recuperar su territorio. Al mismo tiempo se burlaba de Rusia, a la que calificaba como un «tigre de papel». Ese mismo día, en Nueva York, aseguró que la OTAN debería derribar aviones rusos que violen su espacio aéreo. Estas declaraciones sorprendieron a los observadores dado el tono beligerante hacia Rusia. Pero el mensaje de Trump incluía ciertos matices que provocan serias dudas sobre su compromiso con la OTAN. Se refirió a la alianza atlántica casi como un cliente al que suministra armas y al que le desea suerte, una postura distante, como si Estados Unidos no tuviera un papel activo y de liderazgo en la organización. En una rueda de prensa posterior, al ser preguntado sobre el apoyo militar que prestaría a sus aliados europeos en caso de que tengan que derribar aviones rusos, Trump respondió que su participación dependería de las circunstancias, algo que choca con el principio rector de la OTAN: el artículo 5, que establece una defensa colectiva automática ante un ataque a cualquiera de los miembros. Esta condicionalidad debilita la confianza en el compromiso de EEUU, que representa dos tercios del gasto militar de la alianza. Trump también ha condicionado la ayuda a Europa a que los países dejen de comprar hidrocarburos rusos e impongan aranceles a China, lo que abunda en su enfoque transaccional para todo, es decir, te ayudo, pero sólo si haces lo que te indico. En las últimas semanas Rusia ha intensificado sus provocaciones contra la OTAN. Se han producido varios incidentes como la incursión de 19 drones en el espacio aéreo polaco interceptados por cazas holandeses y polacos, y sobrevuelos de cazas rusos en Estonia y el mar Báltico. La OTAN ha respondido con la Operación Centinela Oriental, pero EEUU no participa en ella, lo que refuerza la idea de que Europa está sola. El Pentágono se ha abstenido de involucrarse en estas operaciones, y las declaraciones de sus representantes, como el general Alexus Grynkewich, no disipan las dudas sobre el compromiso estadounidense. La guerra en Ucrania y la agresividad rusa han reavivado el debate sobre la autonomía estratégica europea. La OTAN ha respondido a las incursiones rusas, pero tiene demasiados puntos débiles como la dependencia en inteligencia, transporte militar, guerra electrónica y sistemas de defensa antimisiles como el Patriot. Los ejércitos europeos, fragmentados por intereses nacionales, arrastran infinidad de problemas burocráticos y políticos que dificultan su capacidad de respuesta. Europa ha incrementado su gasto militar, en parte por la presión de Trump, pero aún depende de EEUU en aspectos fundamentales. In this milestone 100th episode of our podcast, Stuart celebrates seven years of the show by reminiscing about its origins and dipping into the very first episode from September 2018. Then its time to welcome back friend of the show Vanessa Viger, Chief Marketing Officer at Envision. The Ally Solos Glasses are designed to look like normal, lightweight everyday frames. They feature a camera on the left arm and battery-powered, removable stems that offer a 10-hour battery life with swappable arms for all-day use. They will be available in medium/large sizes and three colour options, complete with a folding case. The glasses are offered at an early bird price of £380, normally around £532. This price includes a 1-year Ally Pro subscription worth around £200. They connect via Bluetooth to a phone and can function as a headset for music and calls. They utilize existing Ally profiles/personalities across devices and employ multiple AI models for different tasks, focusing on accuracy over speed for safety. Unlike the hardware-focused Envision glasses, the Ally Solos adopt a software platform approach. Envision provides customer support, while Solos handles fulfilment. These glasses are built with an accessibility-first approach, distinguishing them from general market products like Meta Ray-Bans. Key scenarios include reading menus, food packaging and signs, getting real-time descriptions of what's around you, checking your calendar and even finding out what the weather forecast. They are also prescription and tinted lens compatible and aim to target a broader market, including the elderly, individuals with cognitive needs, and those seeking general convenience.  Ally and Ally Solos Glasses users have complete control over their privacy since all Envision products are GDPR compliant and you are opted out of data sharing by default.

In this episode of iCantCU, I'm finally back after a month and diving into the Ally Solos—new smart glasses from Envision designed specifically for blind and low-vision users. Unlike Ray-Ban or Oakley Metas, these aren't built for social media first. They won't shoot video at launch, but they'll capture photos and focus on accessibility features that actually matter to us. The presale had me tempted, and even though I held off because of past bad experiences with uncomfortable frames from other brands, I may still give them a try with their 30-day return policy. I also share some of the frustrations I've had with my Ray-Ban Metas—like constant notifications interrupting conversations, calls bouncing between devices, and unpredictable dictation. While the glasses can be fantastic when they work (like helping me confirm my Harrisburg train at 30th Street Station), those quirks make me eager to see if the Ally Solos can do better.
