The greatest of all time, Meiko Kaji, recently came to NYC for a retrospective of her work at Japan Society, so naturally I had to celebrate with a podcast episode in her honor. This is a solo outing, where I discuss the Stray Cat Rock series, which Kaji made for Nikkatsu. It launched her to countercultural stardom and was her last major project for the studio before departing for Toei in 1972 where she went on to greater heights with a series of crime and revenge films. I discuss the five film series: Stray Cat Rock: Delinquent Girl Boss (1970), Stray Cat Rock: Wild Jumbo (1970), Stray Cat Rock: Sex Hunter (1970), Stray Cat Rock: Machine Animal (1970), and Stray Cat Rock: Beat ’71 (1971). These are incredibly stylish and often whimsical, though only loosely connected stories of girl gangs, their battles with rival male gangs, racism, the American occupation in Japan, drug use, the Tokyo nightclub scene, and freewheeling hippies. Kaji doesn’t play a recurring character (as in the better known Female Prisoner Scorpion series), but different iterations of a cool, charismatic gang boss and juvenile delinquent with a heart of gold. In the episode, I mention that my live interview with Kaji from March 28 will hopefully be up on Japan Society’s YouTube page soon (but there is a ton of great Japanese cinema content there already). Can we control a virtual body as naturally as our own—using only brain activity? Answering this question led Taiga to the nomination for the International BCI Award, bringing all of us one step closer to a future once imagined in science fiction.

Dr. Sudipto Das completed a Bachelor's in Technology (B.Tech) - Biotechnology (honours) from Rai Foundation Colleges, Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University, Mumbai, India in 2007, followed by a M.Res – Biomedical Sciences, University of Glasgow, U.K in 2008. Subsequently, Dr. Das obtained his PhD in cancer genetics under the supervision of Prof. Raymond Stallings in 2012. He has also spent time as a visiting research fellow in VIB, K.U., Leuven, VuMC, Amsterdam and Hoshi University, Tokyo Japan. His doctoral work gave him the opportunity to develop a core expertise in the area of epigenetics focused on DNA methylation alterations and non-coding RNAs, which he further enhanced during his Post-doctoral career. This has allowed Dr. Das to obtain prestigious fellowship from organizations such as the Irish Cancer Society, obtain several awards, develop various national and international collaborations and publish highly cited peer review articles in high-impact scientific journals (including Cancer Research, Oncogene, JCI, Nat Comms, JCO, Cancer Discovery). Dr. Das's key research focus involves application of genomics and epigenomics approaches across a several diseases especially cancer and inflammatory bowel diseases as well as heart failure, with the aim to identifying potential predictive/prognostic biomarkers and/or therapeutic targets that can ultimately aid in enhancing better patient care. His expertise has in turn allowed him to develop various international and national collaboration leading to successful funding applications from British Heart Foundation and Heart Research U.K and Japan Society for Promotion of Science. To date, Dr. Das has accrued >3.5 million euro in funding from national and international funding agencies inlcuding Research Ireland, Health Research Board, Enterprise Ireland and European Crohn's and Colitis foundation, allowing him to establish the "Epigenetics in Gastrointestinal research group". The research group primarily focusses on identifying the role of epigenetic modification as novel biomarkers and therapeutic targets in GI diseases. Dr. Das has led development and expansion of an award winning M.Sc - Technologies & Analytics in Precision medicine established in 2021 funded by the Higher Education Authority - Human Captial Iniative grant. The Royal Albert Hall was the unlikely venue for the biggest Sumo wrestling tournament ever staged outside of Japan on 9th October, 1991. Around forty wrestlers, described in the press as “bouncing like fat Buddhas,” thundered across a ring on clay sourced from a field near Heathrow. Part of the grand Japan Festival - a four-month cultural takeover marking 100 years of the Japan Society, including kabuki at the National Theatre and Buddhist sculptures at the British Museum - demand for tickets was sky-high, thanks to Channel 4's cult Friday night sumo broadcasts. A Shinto-style canopy was shipped over, and reinforced hotels were arranged for the athletes, complete with detachable showers, reinforced beds, and double-sized meals to help them hit their 7,000-calorie daily target. The lineup featured stars with nicknames like “The Killer Whale,” “The Plum,” and the 37-stone “Dump Truck,” Konishiki Yasokichi. Ep. 333: Kiyoshi Kurosawa on his new film Cloud, life, lighting, casting, and the last thing he saw Welcome to The Last Thing I Saw, with your host, Nicolas Rapold. Cloud is the new film by director Kiyoshi Kurosawa, whose unique career includes the films Cure, Pulse, and Tokyo Sonata. Cloud follows an internet reseller (Masaki Suda) who becomes targeted for murder by a band of customers he has played a little too fast and loose with. It's suffused with the air of menace that the director excels at creating, but situated in an actual cutthroat world of extremely online internet resellers. Kurosawa has said it's partly inspired by a true story of an internet-inspired killing, and partly by his desire to shoot an action movie, particularly with characters who are (relatively) ordinary people. As a longtime fan of his work, I felt especially fortunate to speak with director Kiyoshi Kurosawa about Cloud and his work generally. Thank you to Monika Uchiyama for translation. Cloud is in theaters now and had its world premiere in the Venice film festival last fall. It was the centerpiece film at the Japan Society's annual festival Japan Cuts, where director Kiyoshi Kurosawa was honored with the Cut Above Award for his outstanding achievements in cinema. There are retrospectives that remain close to one's heart and for me, one such was an immersion in Mikio Naruse's work many years ago at Film Forum. Fortunately, film history can repeat itself in a good way: Metrograph and Japan Society have teamed up for a Naruse retrospective on his 120th anniversary. I spoke with Edo Choi, a film programmer at Metrograph and past guest on the program, about Naruse's rich and perhaps still underappreciated body of work, as well as its context within Japanese cinema. Among the films discussed: When a Woman Ascends the Stairs, Wife! Be Like a Rose!, Floating Clouds, and perhaps one of the great swan songs, Scattered Clouds, before Naruse's death in 1969. Dr. Samuel Jamier, Executive Director of the New York Asian Film Festival/Foundation (NYAFF), tells me about his childhood, growing up as a Korean adoptee in France and how his experiences led him to his current role of promoting stories from around the world. He shares his thoughts about reducing stereotypes and advancing representation in film, including: Supporting quality films with multi-dimensional characters vs. blanket support of films with actors who identify with under-represented groups Encouraging increased viewership of films with subtitles Volunteering with the NYAFF. ========================================== Bio: Dr. Samuel Jamier is a distinguished curator, producer, and the Principal of SMLX Consulting, a leading consultancy dedicated to empowering creative teams and enhancing storytelling across Asia and beyond. As the Executive Director of the New York Asian Film Festival/Foundation (NYAFF), Sam brings extensive expertise from his pivotal roles at the Japan Society, The Korea Society, and the French Embassy. After relocating to New York City from Paris in 2002, Sam began his career as a Chargé de Mission for the Cultural Services of the French Embassy, where he spearheaded the literary program. At The Korea Society, he orchestrated diverse programming initiatives, spanning from foreign policy and corporate symposia to Korean cinema and traditional performing arts. His multidisciplinary programs featured notable figures such as Bong Joon-Ho and the DPRK delegation to the UN for the NY Philharmonic's "Live from North Korea" concert. As a Senior Film Programmer at the Japan Society, he curated comprehensive film series and festivals, notably the acclaimed Japan Cuts festival. In his current role at NYAFF, Sam has transformed the festival from a niche operation focused on Kung Fu flicks and genre movies to a globally influential event, fostering industry relationships across China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, and Southeast Asia. Sam's work is influenced by his unique background as a Korean adoptee raised in Brittany, France. His personal journey navigating multicultural identities inspires his commitment to fostering authentic cultural representation and enhancing storytelling accuracy for global entertainment professionals.
Tom Montag, CEO of Rubicon Carbon, joins us to discuss the world of carbon credits. Tom has had an illustrious career, previously serving as Chief Operating Officer at Bank of America, President of Global Banking and Markets, and a member of the executive management team. He joined Merrill Lynch as Executive Vice President and Head of Global Sales and Trading in 2008, just before its merger with Bank of America. Before that, he was with Goldman Sachs, co-heading the Global Securities Business and serving on its management committee.
