This week on Transmissions: Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad, the duo behind the label and concert series Jazz Is Dead. Founded in 2017, Jazz Is Dead began releasing new work by jazz artists frequently sampled in rap and hip-hop in 2020, including releases from legendary players like Roy Ayers, Azymuth, Gary Bartz, Lonnie Liston Smith, Tony Allen, and more. On January 31st, the duo released JID022, featuring new music from 88-year-old Ghanian highlife and afrobeat master Ebo Taylor, and on April 4th, they will release JID023, featuring Brazilian vocalist Hyldon. Recorded in analog at Linear Labs, the Jazz is Dead series does more than pair younger players with established elders; it showcases the powerful link that connects musicians across decades. As producers, musicians, podcasters, and much more, both Ali and Adrian are heavy hitters. Muhammad is of course known for his work with A Tribe Called Quest, Lucy Pearl, and The Midnight Hour, a duo with Younge. And of course Adrian is an accomplished musical force too, check out his work with The Delfonics, Souls of Mischief, Ghostface Killah, and Kendrick Lamar. We taped this conversation in January, in the hazy, strange weeks after the terrible fires that tore through the city of Los Angeles. That's where our conversation starts—reflecting on history lost, and what it takes to preserve it, and also, why they don't necessarily think of Jazz Is Dead as an archival or preservationist project in the first place. You can read a full transcript of this conversation at Aquarium Drunkard, where you'll find 20 years worth of playlists, recommendations, reviews, interviews, podcasts, essays, and more. Creativity and personality are the main caracteristics of this brazilian duo formed by Marcelo Abreu and Diogo Vaille. After a long history in brazilian electronic music scene, these two guys got together and already put their first tracks made as Bruce Leroys project on one of the most vital deep-house labels at the moment, the OFF Recordings. Now, they are already being charted and supported by artists like Joyce Muniz, Doctor Dru, Tiger Stripes, Jay Lumen and many others, and their unique fusion of Deep, Disco, Funk, Techno, Hip-Hop, and Garage keeps making more and more fans all over the world. "Without trying to flatter SlothBoogie, but flattering them, we really enjoyed Philippa's release. It's one of the best EPs of the year so far. The Tiptoes' track fits perfectly alongside the classic “The Curse”. SlothBoogie consistently delivers music of excellent quality across different dimensions. In this set, we've mixed in previously released tracks from our label AUREUM and two unreleased tracks. “Acaju” and “Maravilha Marginal” are the next two EPs from our label, and we have a lot of belief in these tracks. We included the Art of Tones version for our first release on the Aureum label. Also featured in this mixtape is our collaboration with our favourite band, Azymuth, and the remix by Felipe Gordon for our partnership with Bernardo Campo. Mr. G doesn't need introductions. “Snare Bouncin'” is that raw groove we all love, reminiscent of Kenlou & MAW at their best! Even though it's from 1997, Mateo & Matos still sound incredibly fresh." Their new project: Augusta Barna, Bruce Leroys - ACAJU (Aureum), is out on the 29th Sep 2023
I'm by no means super deep on Brazilian jazz, but figured it was a good time to play a few favorites! In episode #50 we celebrate the album "Previsão do Tempo" by Marcos Valle, released in September 1973 by Odeon. After experimenting with different bands, and a handful of soundtracks under his name, Marcos Valle came up with his album masterpiece according to many critics. Backed up by the trio Azymuth, "Previsão do Tempo" is a blend of Brazilian MPB, with funk, soul, pop, and jazz, with a high volume of political lyrics, written mostly by Marcos and his brother Paulo Sergio Valle. The album was not a mainstream hit upon its release although over time gained a cult status amongst DJs and record collectors. Follow our playlist on Spotify: "Soundtrack: Brazuca Sounds". Y el domingo 16 nos dejó, a los 92 años, el estadounidense Ahmad Jamal, pianista admirado por Miles Davis, al que recordamos en solitario ('Spring is here'/'Your story', 'Emily'), en trío con contrabajo y guitarra ('I get a kick out of you', 'It ain´t necessarily so'), con contrabajo y batería ('Feeling good') y con trío y orquesta de cuerdas ('The shadow of your smile'). "Jazz is always present in our life. It's a sensation of freedom. The possibility to express yourself, mind and heart on that precise moment." Jazz has constantly been part of Azymuth's spirit. You can hear it everywhere. Furthermore, their open-minded vision of creating music back in the '60s and 70's lead them to mix Jazz with Samba and rock uniquely. Among the many songs they made, there's one in particular that I always love to listen to. It's called "Villa Mariana". I believe a perfect way to describe their timeless music. In today's interview, Azymuth talks about the past, present and future of Jazz, its musical roots and the contribution of festivals like Jazz:Re: Found to Jazz music. You will also hear some great stories from Kiko about Villa Mariana. Enjoy the chat! I know I did

In this week's podcast Tim and Jeremy complete their three-parter on Brazil, looking at music in the country from 1968 - 1975. Against a backdrop of managed democracy, repression and censorship for musicians, we hear about a number of exciting artists who combined inventive experimental radicalism with a popular imagination to create electrifying music. Jeremy and Tim introduce Fusion groups like Azymuth and Aitro, totemic Brazilian singers like Astrud Gilberto, and the incredible output of Jorge Ben. Tim and Jeremy also discuss varying psychedelic aesthetics in the country and internationally, including the contrast between indigenous practices and the classical countercultural LSD scene; spent time on the place of reissuing culture of contemporary labels like Mr Bongo; and disagree over how we should listen to music with explicitly religious lyrics. As broadcast November 17, 2021 with plenty of samba for you podcast dancers. Tonight Danno had to fly to Rio solo as he's come down with the flu and didn't wanna get Lizz Kalo sick as well, but that took away absolutely none of the abject majesty of a country that is truly gifted in so many ways, with music being one of the chief gifts. We mainly stayed classic tonight but did give a few nods to the contemporary on-the-rise artists of Brasil just making their way. #feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)Tim Maia – Gostava Tanto De VocêMarcos Valle – Estrelarbelina – a gente não tem nada a verDeodato – Whistle BumpJoão Donato feat Jazz Is Dead – Não Negue Seu CoracãoAzymuth feat Jazz Is Dead – Ao Redor Do Samba Part II (33:38)Elis Regina – Aguas de Março (MPB Especial 1973)Antonio Carlos Jobim – Children's GamesBebel Gilberto – Samba de BencãoErasmos Carlos – GrilosCaetano Veloso – You Don't Know MeTitcho Looper feat Rodrigo Samsara – Primeira PessoaVictor de Albequerque – Sinto Maito Part III (63:36)Jorge Ben - Descobri Que Eu Sou Um AnjoGilberto Gil - Toda Menina BaianaElis Regina - Tiro Ao Álvaro Elis Regina – Como Nossos PaisClara Nunes - Você Passa Eu Acho GraçaCaetano Veloso – Nine Out of Ten Part IV (94:56)Sergio Mendes & Brasil ‘66 - Mas Que NadaToco - GuarapirangaIZA - Meu TalismãTim Maia – Ela PartiuSouth Club - If I were richO.O.O – 눈이 마주줬을 때
In episode #19, we talk about the Brazilian biggest record label Som Livre. Founded in 1969 as a vehicle for Globo TV's soap opera soundtracks, it gradually started to release new talented artists such as Novos Baianos, Azymuth, Guilherme Arantes, until it quickly became a Brazilian phenomenon in record sales. We explored some of the great records released during Som Livre's first incarnation, under its iconic SOM LIVRE green logo used between 1971-1977.
