What If Joe Douglas Ran the 2019 Jets Offseason 8/7/20

Earlier this week a listener named Andrew sent a request for a show centered on a hypothetical situation where Joe Douglas was hired as Jets general manager in January 2019. At that point the Jets had the second most salary cap room in the NFL and the third overall pick in the NFL Draft. They also had a quarterback with three years remaining on his rookie contract.Of course Douglas wasn't hired then. He was only hired after Mike Maccagnan ran the entire offseason and essentially set the core of the Jets roster for the next two seasons. What would have happened in a Douglas 2019 offseason? While I can't speak to specific players Douglas would have signed, there are many aspects that would likely be different from Adam Gase to the way positions are valued to the approach to free agency to broader aspects of the team's management. Ultimately I think the focus would be more on football than on media attention. This is the topic of today's show. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

When the next general manager of the Jets is hired he will take control of the front office. It will be his job to construct a vision and execute it.With all of the drama surrounding the franchise and this search, the topic of data analytics has not frequently been mentioned. Presumptive favorite Joe Douglas currently works for the Eagles, one of the most effective teams in the league at leveraging data into on field results. One might guess he would bring that approach to New York. The Jets' past use of data is an even bigger mystery. An ESPN ranking four years ago put the Jets among the professional sports franchises utilizing analytics the least. There were a few rumblings about Mike Maccagnan starting an analytics department, but there wasn't much reporting. On today's podcast I offer thoughts on why analytics are important along with some misconceptions about their meaning. The search for a general manager is going to kick into gear for the Jets over the next few days as the interview process gets going. There are currently four candidates being considered for the job now that George Paton of the Vikings has withdrawn his name from consideration. We could still see an extra name or two added to the search before the process is done.On today's podcast I will discuss how I view the search for Mike Maccagnan's replacement. My feelings are different from those of many others. While I think Joe Douglas is a solid candidate, I don't think he's the only viable option. I believe all of the candidates are credible, and any hire should be met with an open mind. I also don't believe in looking solely at the success of the teams these candidates would depart as the method by which to judge them. These and other thoughts will be the focus of today's show. These days I see plenty of arguments about the state of the Jets under our new Adam Gase overlord, and I find my views don't fit neatly into either side of the debate. 'There are issues pertaining to the firing of Mike Maccagnan that I believe transcend the general manager's poor job performance. These are issues about the way Chris Johnson has operated that make me concerned about his approach to management for the future. Despite my concerns about management's approach, I do not believe Maccagnan deserved to stay. So you will not see me agitated over the mere fact Maccagnan is gone. If you want vitriol over the fact the Jets have tinkered with the back end of their roster by adding a punter and dropping an unproductive fifth round tight end, you'll have to go elsewhere. I can refer you to a writer who is outraged over all of these things and the fact Peter Schrager might be part of preseason telecasts. It's one thing to point out the issues, but we have a football team to fix. On today's podcast I offer some advice to Chris Johnson going forward about how he should function and develop his leadership style. Learn more about your ad choices. The Mike Maccagnan era came to its conclusion last week after five offseasons and four seasons. The general manager's tenure brought few wins to the Jets. In our latest Tuesday ranking podcast we take a look back to the Maccagnan era to rank the top five best and worst moves. This was a bit of a challenging endeavor since I found one of the lists had a ton of candidates while another had very few selections from which to choose.Ultimately I settled on five from each group so today you can sit back and listen to the recap of a generally unsuccessful era that did have at least one potentially positive franchise-altering move. We are nearing the one week mark since the Jets fired general manager Mike Maccagnan. There has been a striking lack of chatter about the search. Others have suggested the team still has not gotten permission to speak with anybody yet. So far there has been little in the way of actual news on the search. On today's podcast I offer five candidates I think the Jets should consider for these jobs. I am not saying these are the only five viable options. I am also not suggesting any would be a lock for success, but these are the candidates I would examine to start the search. I will explain my views on the show.My five candidates are Joe Douglas, the aforementioned Philadelphia executive, Eliot Wolf of Cleveland's front office, free agent Scot McCloughan, Duke Tobin of Cincinnati's front office, and Will McClay of Dallas' front office. It won't come immediately. Reports broke on Monday that the team will not fire Todd Bowles at this point. While this will be to the chagrin of some fans, the long-term impacts are negligible. It is merely delaying the inevitable. Bowles will be fired at some point in the coming weeks.Less clear is the job status of Mike Maccagnan, the team's general manager. Feel free to resubmit them next week.On today's show we look at how much concern Jets fans should have over Mike Maccagnan's record with offensive linemen, whether the Jets will trade for an edge rusher before the start of the regular season, the odds the team will have four rookie starters, whether it is a good idea to have Darron Lee make the defensive calls, what Bilal Powell's role will be, why some franchises are bad long-term, whether the Jets should at least try to sign Teddy Bridgewater as a long-term backup, and whether the coaching staff should be held to account for a lack of player development. It is Thursday, which make it podcast mailbag day. Thanks to those who responded to our mailbag call with so many great questions. We got enough questions to do a second mailbag tomorrow. On today's podcast we look at whether comments made by former Giants coach Ben McAdoo about Sam Darnold are worth considering, whether Darrelle Revis will go into the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a member of the Jets, whether Revis could be considered the greatest player in franchise history, why the Jets have drafted so poorly in the second round, whether we should cut Mike Maccagnan some slack for drafting Christian Hackenberg since it was a roll of the dice to upgrade quarterback, and questions about style. Our podcast schedule for this week ends a bit early. Today's show will be our last episode until next week due to my travel schedule. With that in mind, I decided to get a mailbag done.  Thanks to those of you who submitted questions. Apologies to those whose questions were not answered. Feel free to resubmit them next week.Today we look at whether the success of some 2017 Draft picks could help change the narrative on Mike Maccagnan, whether Teddy Bridgewater could be traded the way Sam Bradford was two years ago, whether a trade could happen even if Bridgewater starts and plays well, whether the Jets could consider playing multiple quarterbacks within games, how the Jets should deal with their playbook during the transition to Sam Darnold, and how many tight ends the team will keep on the roster. I got an interesting e-mail from a podcast listener yesterday named Richard. Richard is a diehard Jets fan from the United Kingdom. He made the observation that the Draft this year for the Jets was largely a developmental one after the selection of Sam Darnold opposed to plug and play.Richard's e-mail got me thinking a bit about whether Mike Maccagnan has shown any discernible pattern during his time as Jets general manager. Does Maccagnan take more of a developmental approach to his picks? Does he favor plug and play? Does he prefer a mix of the two?On today's show we take a look. I think it is only worth looking at the first three rounds since most everybody picked on the third day of the Draft is a developmental player. How many of Maccagnan's picks have been developmental players? How many have been plug and play? I offer a subjective grade for all eleven. Learn more about your ad choices. If you have not read Albert Breer's excellent article from this week about the Jets' multi-year pursuit of Sam Darnold, I cannot recommend it highly enough. It was an incredibly detailed look at the inner workings of the Jets' front office as they tried to find a franchise quarterback. I think it is one of the best sports articles of the year.Over the last few days, I have been thinking a lot about how the Jets handled their scouting this year. The Breer article provided us with a lot of information. I thought Mike Maccagnan and company came out looking great. There were several positives I took from the plan. That is the topic of today's podcast. It is no secret that this front office has had its ups and downs over the last four years. There were several elements of the Darnold plan, however, that should leave Jets fans feeling good about the direction of the organization and the people in the front office.  Learn more about your ad choices. I did my best to answer as many as I could, but as usual I could not get to all of them. Feel free to resend your question for next time if I did not get to yours on today's podcast. In this mailbag we take a look at the definition of a franchise quarterback, whether the jobs of Mike Maccagnan and Todd Bowles should be tied at the hip, whether the team has any young edge rusher with the potential to break out this season, whether Jamal Adams should tone down his Twitter presence, and whether Josh McCown might be worth the $10 million the Jets will pay him even if he never takes a snap as long as he assists in Sam Darnold's development. Last week, a few of our podcasts focused on Drafting philosophies on display across the NFL. Today we look at what Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan does when he is on the clock. In three years, a few patterns have emerged. Maccagnan has also been willing to share them with the media at various points, which gives us a good idea of what he is looking for.Three such strategies stand out. Maccagnan had put an emphasis on drafting players at a pair of important positions, quarterback and outside linebacker. He puts less of an emphasis on the offensive line with a stated view that good teams find and develop linemen in the middle and later rounds of the Draft. While the execution of these strategies has left something to be desired, one could argue these are valid team building strategies. On today's show we examine them deeper. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

On today's podcast we take a look at the approach the Jets had in free agency in 2018. There still might be a move here or there. It might even be a major move. We are deep enough into the process to draw some conclusions about how the Jets approached free agency.Naturally comparisons will be drawn with the last time the Jets were flush with cap space. That was three years ago in Mike Maccagnan's first offseason. The Jets spent big that year. It helped them win 10 games, but many of their additions turned sour in year two. A number of observers have pointed out that the Jets seemingly have targeted younger players this time around than they did in 2015. That is a valid point, but I see other big philosophical differences.  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

It has been an eventful week for the Jets. Their salary cap space has facilitated a number of additions who will hopefully upgrade the roster moving forward. While these moves are worst discussing, two stand above all others. One was a move the Jets didn't make. Another was one they did. The Jets were unable to land free agent quarterback Kirk Cousins who found his way to the Minnesota Vikings. They were, however, able to trade up to obtain the third overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft. These will likely be remembered as legacy moments for Mike Maccagnan. Whether they will ultimately be remembered as good or bad, we can only guess at this point. They have, however, unquestionably altered expectations for the 2018 New York Jets. On today's podcast we discuss how expectations have changed due to these two major developments. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

The NFL has set the salary cap for the 2018 league year. Teams had been able to estimate approximately how much cap space they would enter free agency with, but now they know for sure. The Jets knew their room would be vast. It is around $90 million. The lessons of offseasons past have taught us that having cap space doesn't guarantee anything. The money has to be spent smartly. In some ways even having that much room under the cap can be a negative if it is a sign the team lacks talent. It is one thing to have a good team and cap flexibility. It is another to be swimming in cap space because no players on the roster are worth long-term contracts. On today's podcast we take a look at the Jets' current cap situation and why the Jets need to enter free agency with some degree of caution. Mike Maccagnan should have learned a lesson three years ago about understanding the risks that come with big spending. Whether he has is something we will figure out over the weeks ahead. Building this roster into a legitimate contender is likely a multi-year process. This year's free agency is simply a first step. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

For close to a decade, it seems like the Jets have had one philosophy at the running back position. They have targeted old, big name running backs. This is not simply a Mike Maccagnan thing. It also happened during the days of Mike Tannenbaum and John Idzik. In 2010, Tannenbaum signed the legendary LaDainian Tomlinson from the Chargers to be what he hoped would be one of the final pieces of a Jets Super Bowl puzzle. Four years later, Idzik brought in former 2,000 yard rusher Chris Johnson to help push the Jets into the Playoffs. Two years later, Maccagnan signed former Bears star Matt Forte for the same reason.None of these moves worked terribly well. (Tomlinson was nowhere near as productive as you might remember.) Beyond that, these signings had implications that hurt the team. Younger, better running backs were either discarded or had their playing time limited. On today's podcast we talk about the need for the Jets to change their approach at the position. Instead of seeking out the biggest name, it is time to look for younger and cheaper options with more upside. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

On today's podcast, we put a bow on a year that began with some degree of promise but fell apart at the end.The game on Sunday was not pretty. The weather was ugly. The play on the field was arguably uglier. The Jets were outclassed by a much better team.A few days before the game, a more important development took shape. The Jets decided to keep their management team in place. General manager Mike Maccagnan and head coach Todd Bowles were given two year contract extensions. What do these deals mean?
