How much is enough for the kids? What do we do with the rest? There is value in community and in having like-minded advisors as you write your estate plans. You should have a financial finish line written down. You should also be on the same page as your spouse with that finish line and what is happening with any excess. It's not about the balance sheet or the barn, it is about what God tells you and your spouse to do.Write a blessing letter to your children - write why you love them, what sticks out to you about their lives, about seeing God's hand in their lives, and more. Update it over the years.  "God doesn't care about how many talents you have. What He cares is what you do with them." —  Cale Dowell About Cale Dowell: After diving deep into the hurdles clients face when picking a financial partner, Cale determined that financial advice should offer more than just managing a portfolio. If you believe the highest goal of investing is simply to earn a high return, you may be overlooking a deeper purpose—how our money can be used for good.As investors, we've been given resources to manage, not just for profit, but in alignment with God's will and values. It's easy to see investing through a purely earthly lens, but God invites us into a much greater story. Today, Robin John joins us to explore that bigger vision.Robin John is co-founder and Chief Executive Officer at Eventide Asset Management, an underwriter of Faith & Finance. He's also the author of the forthcoming book, The Good Investor: How Your Work Can Confront Injustice, Love Your Neighbor, and Bring Healing to the World.A Vision for Redemptive InvestingEventide's tagline—“Investing that makes the world rejoice”—is more than marketing. It's a biblical conviction inspired by Proverbs:“When the righteous prosper, the city rejoices, but when the wicked perish, there are shouts of joy.” – Proverbs 11:10Righteousness, in this context, refers to those who seek the good of others. The righteous prosper by looking out for the people in the city. But the wicked prosper through exploitation, especially of the poor. That leads to groaning, not rejoicing. For Eventide, investing is about more than avoiding harm. It's about actively investing in companies whose products and practices bring tangible good into the world—serving real needs, not exploiting vulnerabilities. Can You Do Good and Do Well?A common concern among faith-based investors is whether aligning values with investments means sacrificing returns.Romans 12 tells us “not to conform to the patterns of this world but be transformed by the renewing of our minds.” That means we should be willing to make sacrifices if necessary. But that doesn't mean underperformance.Research from the Biblically Responsible Investing Institute, drawing on a 19-year study, compares values-based screening (which excludes companies involved in activities such as abortion, pornography, and tobacco) with the S&P 500 and yields equivalent long-term returns. It's a myth that you must compromise performance to honor your faith. At Eventide, they don't just avoid the bad—we seek out the good. The Ultimate Question, as posed by Bain consultant Fred Reichheld, also found that the most successful companies are those that best serve their customers and employees. Serving people well is good business, and it often leads to long-term outperformance. Why How You Make Money MattersJohn Wesley once said, ‘Make all you can, give all you can, but make all you can without hurting yourself or your neighbor.”Proverbs 1:19 also warns against partnering with those who gain through unjust means. It's not just what we give—it's how we earn that matters to God. Ill-gotten gain is not pleasing to Him.Generosity isn't limited to charitable giving. A teacher choosing to serve children instead of pursuing a higher-paying career is living generously, even without writing a check. The Good InvestorRobin's passion is to see everyday Christians empowered to invest in ways that reflect their values. His upcoming book, The Good Investor: How Your Work Can Confront Injustice, Love Your Neighbor, and Bring Healing to the World, aims to help believers do just that. The Good Investor doesn't stop at money—it's also a book about purpose and calling. Don't assume your calling means you have to start something new. Many Christians are exactly where God needs them to be. The real challenge is to recognize your work as valuable to God and do it in a way that reflects His goodness.Psalm 1:3 emphasizes that the blessed life is rooted in delighting in God's Word and walking in His ways:“That person is like a tree planted by streams of water...whatever they do prospers.”Robin's new book, The Good Investor: How Your Work Can Confront Injustice, Love Your Neighbor, and Bring Healing to the World, will be released on July 22 and is available for pre-order now wherever books are sold. This is a must-read for any Christian who wants to rethink investing through the lens of God's Kingdom—and rediscover the purpose and power of their everyday financial decisions. On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:I have a 401(k) from my old school district job with approximately $7,000-$8,000 in it. On this edition of Parallax Views, we remember the late Pope Francis in conversation with veteran journalist William Dowell, who recently penned the WhoWhatWhy article “The Passing of a Genuinely Christian Pope.” Dowell reflects on Francis's lasting spiritual legacy, portraying him as a humble and principled leader who consistently emphasized compassion for the poor, migrants, and marginalized—offering a distinct moral voice in a time often marked by political polarization and societal uncertainty. Drawing on decades of experience covering the Vatican and international affairs, Dowell shares thoughtful reflections on papal transitions, the evolving role of the Catholic Church, and how Francis's message of empathy and humility resonated with younger generations and diverse global audiences. The conversation also widens to examine broader political and cultural dynamics, including the rise of populist and authoritarian currents in the United States, especially in light of the 2nd Trump presidency. Dowell offers his perspective on recent political developments and contrasts the ethos of Francis's leadership with contemporary trends he sees as driven more by power than principle. In an age where foundational democratic and ethical values are frequently contested, the discussion offers space for reflection on the role of conscience, truth, and leadership. This wide-ranging dialogue is both a tribute to a unique papacy and an invitation to deeper thought.

In the bustling corridors of Dowell J. Howard, a transformative change is taking place in the realm of Career and Technical Education (CTE). On a recent visit, Valley Today host Janet Michael sat down with Principal Ben Thompson to explore the dynamic programs and opportunities that have elevated the school to new heights within the Frederick County Public School system. Taking place amidst the hands-on learning environments of Dowell J. Howard, the conversation delved into the myriad of programs, from Criminal Justice to Nursing, that are now integral parts of the school's offerings. Thompson shared that a goal set three years ago by the administration was to expand or add 10 programs in 10 years—a goal they are well on their way to achieving. He highlighted recent additions such as the Criminal Justice program, reinforced by a partnership with the Frederick County Sheriff's Office, and the rapidly growing Nursing program which recently saw the addition of a fourth instructor. Janet and Ben also discussed the future of the school's program offerings, including exciting prospects like Data Science, bolstered by a $2.8 million grant from the state of Virginia, and the possibility of a Diesel program. The principal touched on the current high demand for these courses and the balance necessary to meet both student interest and industry needs, ensuring students are employable upon completion. The conversation shone a light on the very essence of CTE programs, emphasizing practical, hands-on experiences. Janet pointed out the real-world applications of the program, such as students working on cars, constructing sheds, and engaging in evidence collection for criminal justice. These programs not only provide valuable skills but also foster a tight-knit learning community among the students. Ben shared inspiring stories of students spending extra hours honing their skills, driven by their passion and commitment. One critical issue highlighted was the astounding 305% increase in CTE applications over three years, contrasted by the unfortunate reality that space and resources limit the number of students who can participate in these valuable programs. This challenge underscores the need for further expansion and resource allocation to meet growing demand. Beyond the curriculum, the school also prides itself on its competitive spirit, with students achieving impressive feats in state and national competitions. Thompson spoke proudly of recent accomplishments, including state championships in auto service technology and high placements in criminal justice and collision repair competitions. To celebrate student achievements, Dowell J. Howard holds a unique ‘completer' event each year, recognizing the accomplishments of students who have earned certifications across various programs. This not just marks the end of their academic journey but also symbolizes the beginning of their professional lives, with tangible tokens like engraved toolboxes and hammers awarded to them. Ben also encouraged the community to visit during their open house events and witness the cutting-edge facilities and programs firsthand. These tours aim to dispel misconceptions about trade education and highlight the immense value of CTE programs in providing students with practical, employable skills straight out of high school. The next one is scheduled for March 27 from 5:15pm til 6:15pm. In closing, Janet thanked Ben for his insightful tour and conversation, which painted a vivid picture of the vibrant educational environment at Dowell J. Howard. As the bells ring and the students of Dowell J. Howard file into their workshops and laboratories, one thing is clear: this is not just a school—it's a launchpad for future careers and community development.
