Ken and Lima push back on Chris Simms' theory that Shedeur Sanders lost the quarterback competition by playing it too safe in practice, arguing Simms barely follows the Browns and is likely working off secondhand reports rather than real evidence. They point out the irony that Deshaun Watson, not Sanders, is the one who looks afraid to push the ball downfield, and question why so many local hosts are pinning the decision on ownership ego when the front office's own moves—stockpiling quarterbacks, scrubbing Watson's signage—already read as an admission the trade was a disaster. The segment closes with a preview of Albert Breer's claim that Watson may not even be viable as a backup, teeing up more discussion at 9 with Joe Thomas.
Lima pushes Ken on Albert Breer's idea of the Browns trading for Jameis Winston, but Ken won't budge, refusing to give up any more draft capital for a quarterback while the roster is this depleted. He runs down just how thin Cleveland is at safety, linebacker, and offensive line, and frames this season as a bridge to 2027 rather than one worth mortgaging future picks to patch. Ken also contrasts his younger, more combative self with where he's at now, saying he's resigned to "cleaning up" a mess he didn't create instead of chasing a short-term fix.
Ken plays Todd Monken's explanation of the quarterback competition again and pushes back hard, arguing the "operational" excuse doesn't hold up when Shedeur Sanders has clearly outplayed Deshaun Watson. Lima counters that the total silence from inside the building—no leaks, no complaints from teammates or receivers—suggests the coaching staff genuinely believes Watson gives them the better chance to win, whatever the tape shows fans. They also bring in Albert Breer's reporting that sources in Buffalo, Chicago, and inside the Browns organization all still have Watson rated ahead of Sanders, setting up a preview of what Joe Thomas will be asked about at 9 AM.
Nick and Jonathan are joined by The MMQB's Albert Breer, and they react to his comments about Deshaun Watson's leash as the Browns starting quarterback.

Ken Carman and Anthony Lima open by dissecting the Michigan-Ohio State hate rivalry, debating whether Kyle Whittingham's measured comments about Ohio State are genuine or a "Trojan horse" compared to Jeremiah Smith's raw hatred of Michigan, with Albert Breer's warning that Whittingham's words will haunt him if he loses in November. The conversation pivots hard to the Browns, where Ken reveals that despite no one in local media wanting Deshaun Watson to win the starting job, he increasingly believes Watson will be "given" it out of camp over Shedeur Sanders. They play Mike Tannenbaum's blunt take that the Browns should cut ties with Watson entirely given his injury history and poor play, which Ken says just "preaches to the choir" of how locals already feel. Anthony notes the stark gap between local and national coverage, pointing out that national pundits barely mention Shedeur or the Browns at all, dismissing Cleveland's quarterback room as one of the league's worst regardless of who starts.

The Chicago Bears may finally be getting some encouraging injury news—and several young defenders are beginning to make serious noise at training camp.On today's episode of Chicago Bears Central, Haize reacts to an intriguing update surrounding offensive tackle Ozzy Trapilo. After suffering a ruptured patellar tendon during Chicago's Wild Card victory over Green Bay, Trapilo had been expected to miss most of the 2026 season. But Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer offered an encouraging update from Bears camp, saying Trapilo “might be back sooner than expected.”That could become extremely important for a Bears left-tackle room currently dealing with uncertainty. Braxton Jones has missed multiple practices, while Jedrick Wills Jr. and Kiran Amegadjie have rotated with the first-team offense. Then we get to Caleb Williams.Veteran defensive tackle Grady Jarrett says Caleb's biggest improvement has been his command of the offense, command of the huddle and growing confidence. After taking a significant step last season and leading the league with six fourth-quarter comebacks, Williams appears to be entering camp with an entirely different level of control.Haize also dives into two young defensive players beginning to force their way into bigger conversations.

The Las Vegas Raiders put the pads on for the first time Monday morning — the fifth practice of training camp — and Fernando Mendoza was still working with the second team. Over the weekend that became a national argument. Mike Florio said the Raiders are "deliberately choosing the lesser guy" by naming Kirk Cousins the starter, and warned it would cost them the locker room. Albert Breer was standing on that same practice field and wrote that Cousins is still clearly the best guy at running Klint Kubiak's offense. Two respected voices, one practice, opposite conclusions. Gully works through both, then makes the case that everyone is arguing about the wrong thing — because what has actually broken for Mendoza in this camp isn't arm talent, it's operation. And the man who built this whole plan isn't the head coach. It's a minority owner named Tom Brady. Plus: Maxx Crosby was dominant on the first day in pads, seven months off a meniscus repair, which puts the Baltimore trade that fell apart back on the table. Eric Stokes is playing like a CB1 and spending practice coaching up the rookies trying to take his job. And the offensive line finally got a real test.
