“Making artwork probably saved my life,” says mixed-media artist Amanda Maccagnan. “[It] helped me figure out who I am, where I was going, and what I was doing—and it continues to do.”Navigating the boundary between traditional techniques and contemporary influences, Amanda is rapidly making a name for herself as a rising star in the art world. Working primarily with stained glass, Amanda combines multiple mediums to create unexpected, radical pieces that satirize cultural expectations through exaggeration. Her bold, tongue-in-cheek works frame the artist as a rebel who's comfortable with making her own rules whenever necessary. On today's podcast episode, host and NOT REAL ART founder Scott “Sourdough” Power sits down with Amanda to discuss the glass artist's belief in the spiritual nature of her practice. “My spiritual practice is one of open acceptance,” she says. “As a human, I just want to be receptive to whatever the universe has for me at this point. I believe in vibrational resonance and the powers of symbols and belief, as well as practical and intuitive magic. I feel like that's where my spirituality comes in with my work—it feels like it's more about an energetic realization that creating artwork and being able to manifest thoughts into something tangible and real is alchemy.” Amanda shares her thoughts on using art as therapy, incorporating magic mushrooms into her creative process, and preserving archaic art forms, like glasswork, through apprenticeship. As you'll discover, Amanda's success story hinges on the artist's resilience, reinvention, flexibility, and creative audacity: “There is no such thing as talent,” she quips. “Just try hard and believe in yourself. It's just putting yourself into what you do. That's the talent.” Tune into today's podcast episode with Amanda Maccagnan for plenty of charm and just the right amount of attitude.Key Points From This Episode:Amanda's creative upbringing and what drew her to stained glass.Art as therapy: how making art helped her figure out who she is.Amanda's love for John Waters and her inclusion in the Pope of Trash exhibition. The important role of apprenticeship in preserving traditional mediums like stained glass. Why Amanda says she took to glasswork like she'd been doing it her whole life. The alchemy of art: how artists can manifest their thoughts into something tangible. The role of psychedelics and spirituality in Amanda's practice.Insight into her process and some of the exciting projects that she is working on currently. What John Waters had to say about the stained glass portraits Amanda created of him.Her journey into the novel world of augmented reality (AR) painting. The mental toll that the current state of the world takes for many young people today.Final thoughts on the nature of talent (and why Amanda believes there's no such thing). For more information, please visit http://notrealart.com/amanda-maccagnan

Scott Mason talks to Chris Nimbley of Jetsinsider.com to answer YOUR mailbag questions (part 2). We take YOUR questions about the rest of the offseason workout and training camp schedule, why the media insists on continuing to probe the Maccagnan/Gase story long after Maccagnan's ouster, why random people on social media may feel the need to act as if they are actual reporters with sources, Sam Darnold's throwing motion, Jude as a one man wrecking crew when it comes to anti-Jets media personalities, favorite breakfast recipes, and more! Note: We had such an overwhelming response to the mailbag and received so many questions that the answers were broken down into two parts. This was part 2. These days I see plenty of arguments about the state of the Jets under our new Adam Gase overlord, and I find my views don't fit neatly into either side of the debate. 'There are issues pertaining to the firing of Mike Maccagnan that I believe transcend the general manager's poor job performance. These are issues about the way Chris Johnson has operated that make me concerned about his approach to management for the future. Despite my concerns about management's approach, I do not believe Maccagnan deserved to stay. So you will not see me agitated over the mere fact Maccagnan is gone. If you want vitriol over the fact the Jets have tinkered with the back end of their roster by adding a punter and dropping an unproductive fifth round tight end, you'll have to go elsewhere. I can refer you to a writer who is outraged over all of these things and the fact Peter Schrager might be part of preseason telecasts. It's one thing to point out the issues, but we have a football team to fix. On today's podcast I offer some advice to Chris Johnson going forward about how he should function and develop his leadership style. Learn more about your ad choices. The Mike Maccagnan era came to its conclusion last week after five offseasons and four seasons. The general manager's tenure brought few wins to the Jets. In our latest Tuesday ranking podcast we take a look back to the Maccagnan era to rank the top five best and worst moves. This was a bit of a challenging endeavor since I found one of the lists had a ton of candidates while another had very few selections from which to choose.Ultimately I settled on five from each group so today you can sit back and listen to the recap of a generally unsuccessful era that did have at least one potentially positive franchise-altering move. In an emergency podcast, Florio & Simms break down the shocking-but-not-surprising news of the Jets firing GM Mike Maccagnan. How much did the Le'Veon Bell signing play into the decision? What was the point of contention with Maccagnan and head coach Adam Gase? And what will the dynamic be with Gase and the new GM?
After weeks of speculation that there was a rift between New York Jets General Manager Mike Maccagnan and Head Coach Adam Gase, it's now clear that both men were not on the same page as the organization released Maccagnan from his role as general manager. While many see this as a "Same Old Jets" move, I see this as a decision that will benefit the Jets in the long-term regardless. In this episode let's look at the decision made by the Jets that at first glance doesn't look like a smart choice, but makes sense when you really think about it.

It is an ugly time for the New York Jets. The team heads into its bye week on a four game losing streak. The most recent of those losses was particularly ugly, a 41-10 home blowout at the hands of a Bills team playing a quarterback recently signed off the street.Change is in the air with the Jets. It won't come immediately. Reports broke on Monday that the team will not fire Todd Bowles at this point. While this will be to the chagrin of some fans, the long-term impacts are negligible. It is merely delaying the inevitable. Bowles will be fired at some point in the coming weeks.Less clear is the job status of Mike Maccagnan, the team's general manager. Many people think he will survive. Many think his body of work is superior to Bowles'. Is it really, though? I have my doubts. Maccagnan's suspect record is the topic of today's podcast. I got an interesting e-mail from a podcast listener yesterday named Richard. Richard is a diehard Jets fan from the United Kingdom. He made the observation that the Draft this year for the Jets was largely a developmental one after the selection of Sam Darnold opposed to plug and play.Richard's e-mail got me thinking a bit about whether Mike Maccagnan has shown any discernible pattern during his time as Jets general manager. Does Maccagnan take more of a developmental approach to his picks? Does he favor plug and play? Does he prefer a mix of the two?On today's show we take a look. I think it is only worth looking at the first three rounds since most everybody picked on the third day of the Draft is a developmental player. How many of Maccagnan's picks have been developmental players? How many have been plug and play? I offer a subjective grade for all eleven. Learn more about your ad choices. Last week, a few of our podcasts focused on Drafting philosophies on display across the NFL. Today we look at what Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan does when he is on the clock. In three years, a few patterns have emerged. Maccagnan has also been willing to share them with the media at various points, which gives us a good idea of what he is looking for.Three such strategies stand out. Maccagnan had put an emphasis on drafting players at a pair of important positions, quarterback and outside linebacker. He puts less of an emphasis on the offensive line with a stated view that good teams find and develop linemen in the middle and later rounds of the Draft. While the execution of these strategies has left something to be desired, one could argue these are valid team building strategies. On today's show we examine them deeper. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

For close to a decade, it seems like the Jets have had one philosophy at the running back position. They have targeted old, big name running backs. This is not simply a Mike Maccagnan thing. It also happened during the days of Mike Tannenbaum and John Idzik. In 2010, Tannenbaum signed the legendary LaDainian Tomlinson from the Chargers to be what he hoped would be one of the final pieces of a Jets Super Bowl puzzle. Four years later, Idzik brought in former 2,000 yard rusher Chris Johnson to help push the Jets into the Playoffs. Two years later, Maccagnan signed former Bears star Matt Forte for the same reason.None of these moves worked terribly well. (Tomlinson was nowhere near as productive as you might remember.) Beyond that, these signings had implications that hurt the team. Younger, better running backs were either discarded or had their playing time limited. On today's podcast we talk about the need for the Jets to change their approach at the position. Instead of seeking out the biggest name, it is time to look for younger and cheaper options with more upside. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

RTU Show Rundown - 2/1/18 A Block Yes, the Super Bowl is in 3 days... but we have something else on our minds. The GM's in NY, specifically those helming the Mets, Jets and Islanders. Are they ever accountable? What should a fan's expectation for transparecny be? When is a GM too arrogant? We'll get into Alderson, Maccagnan and Garth Snow as well as talk about what it takes to be successful as a modern GM in NYC. B Block The Super Bowl... sure, we'll talk about it a little bit. Why not? C Block (aka the "Apologies to Lindsey Buckingham" block) The Islanders and Rangers: a tale of two seasons, both shitty. Plus, Kirk Cousins to the Jets RQ. THE FUNLOAD™ (a fun, non sports related unload, as led by Bishop PJ): Bishop Pop Culture PJ is off this week, as apparently the last 4 months weren't sufficient off time for him. He'll be back next week, probably talking about his old pal, Oscar™
As the Super Bowl approaches the New York Jets are another week closer to free agency and the NFL draft. How much pressure is on owner Chris Johnson to inspire the fan base? How much pressure is on Mike Maccagnan to significantly upgrade the roster? Loaded with cap space and high draft picks is that a pivotal offseason for Gang Green? The 2017 season is over for the Jets. The podcast now shifts into offseason mode.During the regular season, the podcast generally had a set schedule for the week. At points we would divert from it, but you generally had a good sense of what was coming each day. During the offseason, we will look to provide more variety. We will have some old friends come to visit and hopefully make some new friends along the way. We also will try out new themes for shows.Today is our first official offseason podcast, and I wanted to open it up to you. On Friday we asked on the website and on Twitter your views on the extensions Mike Maccagnan and Todd Bowles received. On today's show, I will share the feedback received. This is a fanbase with many different viewpoints, and there was a lot of disagreement about the moves. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
