Tommy Rosen is a yoga teacher and addiction recovery expert who has spent the last two decades immersed in recovery and wellness. He holds advanced certifications in both Kundalini and Hatha Yoga and has 31 years of continuous recovery from drug addiction. He is the founder and CEO of the Recovery 2.0 Global Community, where he runs online conferences, group coaching, and coach training programs. He is the author of Recovery 2.0: Move Beyond Addiction and Upgrade Your Life. I met Tommy at a retreat in Maui, Hawaii. It was fun to reconnect to have him share his wisdom and expertise! In this interview, we talk about awareness, addiction, and recovery. This conversation is not about judgment. Tommy talks about his own crippling experiences with cannabis only as an example of addiction, referring to his past use of it as a mere “balm” for his pain rather than medicine. You can substitute cannabis with any behavior you continue to engage in despite the fact that it brings negative consequences into your life. The purpose of this discussion is to gain more insight and awareness into your life so that you can be your best. To Tommy, it all comes down to asking powerful questions of awareness and discernment, so that you can create a new identity based on your authentic self! Sneak-peek: Tommy defines “addiction” from the broad perspective of “any behavior that you continue to do despite the fact that it brings negative consequences into your life.” [3:14] He explains how we can catch ourselves engaging in addictive behavior so that we can take the first steps toward overcoming it. [5:09] Why is “awareness of self” the single most important key to overcoming addiction? [10:07] Tommy shares the initial start of his recovery. [15:10] He reflects on having to leave behind the identity he had built up to his decision to change his life. [21:21] Tommy explains how important support is on your journey to recovery. [31:29] The 4 Aggravations that prevent us from living a full life: [34:18] Negative thinking Self-doubt Procrastination Resentment Learn what the next steps are after achieving self-awareness [37:43] Tommy's advice for you - All human beings are born to excel. For our 48th episode, I sat down with Tommy Rosen. Tommy is an internationally renowned yoga teacher and addiction recovery expert who has spent the last two decades immersed in recovery and wellness. He holds advanced certifications in both Kundalini and Hatha Yoga and has 28 years of continuous recovery from addiction. Tommy is one of the pioneers in the field of Yoga and Recovery. He is the founder and CEO of the Recovery 2.0. A program that includes Online Conferences, Group Coaching , a recovery coach training, international retreats and workshops, a podcast called the Power hour and a critically-acclaimed book Recovery 2.0: Move Beyond Addiction and Upgrade Your Life5 BIGGEST TAKE-AWAY FROM THIS EPISODEThe energy of addiction is an inter-generational tread that builds patterns of behavior that are created intending to solve challenging and complex emotional issues in the family. As we grow up, we continue these patterns of behaviors. Addiction is any behavior you continue despite it bringing negative consequences in your life. Every human being is somewhere on the spectrum of addiction. If you're not addicted directly to alcohol or drugs, sex or co-dependency, gambling, shopping, or being in a state of debt, food or experience any eating disorders, you might be addicted to technology, to being busy, to negative thinking, to self-doubt, to procrastination, to resentment or to the current way things are.Recovery is about understanding yourself so you can reconcile the differences between your inner and outer experience of the world. As you get to know yourself, you can start forgiving yourself and others, and eventually love yourself and others. It requires humility, openness, a desire to look at your life and change, a wiliness to learn from your life experiences, a capacity to admit when you're wrong, to be in a state of surrender and to work to understand that the outer world is not where your joy is going to come from. The path of recovery is a path of discovery. A path where you have an intention, a goal to live with greater awareness, greater consciousness, where to aim to live healthy in your body and mind, where to cultivate harmonious relationships. The path is not an easy, obstacle and stumble free road. Your commitment to learning from what life is showing you is being on the path. You'll have good and less good days. The role of yoga and spirituality in recovery is to bring our subconscious choices and patterns to light so we can work on them. It helps us attune to a higher vibration and higher state of consciousness, build more clarity, more intuition, cultivate a mind able to focus and see the truth. When your energy is attuned in this way, you connect with people that will meet you and support you on this path. QUESTIONS HE ANSWERED DURING THIS EPISODE :Can you tell us a little bit about yourself, your recovery story and yoga journey? What does addiction actually look like? How do we measure success in recovery? Why, generally speaking, are we not more successful in recovery, especially long term recovery? You talk about addiction from a vibrational and energetic point of view, which I love, and is pretty different than other ways it been approached in the past, can you explain what that means and how yoga and spirituality then can help. How do we use breath, movement, meditation to change that frequency? What works about the 12 steps and what’s missing?I love your holistic approach to recovery, I have also heard you talk about diet being another pillar in recovery. How can food help us strengthen the recovery process and help prevent relapse?Just like in the 12 steps, some make a bigger impression on your life. What yoga concepts or philosophy piece has made the biggest impression on your recovery or on the recovery of people you work with? Go to yoga concepts? How is committing to a daily practice important when you’re on a path of recovery? Vs practicing here and there, when you feel that you need it?How does discovering your mission, living on purpose, and being of service to others also support our recovery? How would you wish we were treating addicts in this world?SUBSCRIBE, RATE & REVIEW!DONATE OR BECOME AN EXCLUSIVE MEMBER TODAY.Thank you so much for listening and being part of our 48th episode! “If you have ever had one single thought that you wanted something more for your life, please heed that thought. I believe it is the voice of your own heart asking you to become whole again.”Tommy RosenAddiction doesn't discriminate. It doesn't care how smart you are or how much money you have. Left unchecked, it will destroy your career, decimate your relationships, asphyxiate your aspirations and ultimately bankrupt your soul until you are but a shell of a human being — totally lost, devoid of hope and utterly alone.I've been there. Tommy Rosen has been there too.By the grace of a power greater than ourselves, both Tommy and I found a way out. A solution for sobriety that slowly pieced us back together, made us whole and gave our lives purpose. That solution is the focus of today's conversation. With over twenty-four years of continuous sobriety, Tommy is an addiction recovery expert who has spent the last two decades immersed in yoga, recovery and wellness. He is the author of Recovery 2.0: Move Beyond Addiction and Upgrade Your Life&*, and the founder and host of the Recovery 2.0: Beyond Addiction Online Conference. In addition, he holds certifications in both Kundalini and Hatha Yoga and leads Recovery 2.0 retreats and workshops internationally and presents regularly at yoga conferences and festivals. This is a conversation about Tommy's remarkable path to recovery. It's an intense and at times profound discourse on the ravages of addiction and alcoholism. And it's a master class on the healing journey to becoming whole through the lens of Tommy's expertise, which is utilizing yoga and meditation to empower people to free themselves from the prison of addiction and ultimately build purposeful, fulfilling lives. If you are suffering from some form of addiction, this episode is a must listen. Even if you're not an addict, I encourage you to embrace this conversation as a means to better understand the affliction, as chances are you probably know someone in need of help,I sincerely hope you enjoy this powerful exchange.Peace + Plants,Listen & Subscribe on Apple Podcasts | Soundcloud | StitcherThanks to this week’s sponsors:Boll & Branch: The first honest and transparent bedding company that only uses sustainable and responsible methods of sourcing and manufacturing.
