Remember being told you should start dieting if you could “pinch an inch” around your midsection? (Thanks Special K cereal ads…) Growing up, our bellies were often made a point of shame as they were poked, pinched, and otherwise derided. For many, that shame gets deeper in the menopause transition. That urge to suck it in and suck it up when our body image suffers has damaged more than our psyches (though that's bad enough!). It's damaged our relationship with our bodies–and even our breath, which is not only the very essence of life, but also one of our greatest tools for relaxation and recovery, and for helping manage the challenges of menopause. This week, we sit down with Jill Miller, author of Body by Breath and go deep into the power of breath, the emotional and physical (hello, tight muscles) factors that can constrict our breathing, and, of course, how we can fully access our breath to optimize our health and performance. Jill Miller, C-IAYT, ERYT, is the co-founder of Tune Up Fitness Worldwide and creator of the self-care fitness formats Yoga Tune Up® and The Roll Model® Method. With more than 30 years of study in anatomy and movement, she is a pioneer in forging relevant links between the worlds of fitness, yoga, massage, athletics, and pain management. She has trained thousands of movement educators, clinicians, and manual therapists to incorporate her paradigm-shifting self-care fitness programming into athletic and medical facility programs internationally. As the creator of some of the world's best mobility tools, she has crafted original programs for 24 Hour Fitness, Equinox, YogaWorks, and numerous professional sports teams. Approaching pelvic floor dysfunction from the foot up is a really sensible strategy. Many clients with incontinence, prolapse and pudendal neuralgia really benefit from increasing the mobility in their forefoot because it helps improve their gait, which in turn assists in improving their pelvic floor function too. If you know you should focus more on forefoot mobility, but you're stuck for exercise ideas, or you're unsure which pieces of equipment to use with clients (because some of them seem to be just gimmicks to make us go out and buy shiny new things!), then you're going to love this week's episode. Claire is here to share her top 3 "foot tools" that she uses regularly with clients; why the best way to improve forefoot mobility actually requires no equipment at all (!); and some super useful tips on modifying the use of foot tools from someone who's been there and done it. For the ultimate experience here today, take your shoes off whilst listening and have a play around, or pop your barefoot shoes on and take a nice walk out in nature and enjoy! In this week's podcast episode, I'm speaking with Shauna Fallihee, who is a classical soprano, voice teacher, and expert myofascial release practitioner. We cover lots of helpful tips for incorporating self-massage into your yoga or meditation practice. And, we also have a lot of fun talking about our shared musical backgrounds and how movement and embodiment practices helped us both mentally and physically (as musicians and general humans). Shauna explains what myofascial release is, and how it affects our tissues, nervous system, and embodiment (including the senses of proprioception and interoception). We discuss the ins and outs of various self-massage tools and where to use them on the body. You'll also hear all about the Vagus Nerve – what it is, what it does, and ways we can affect it for greater well-being (hint: singing is one way, and self-massage is another!). We also talk about making the practice your own, when breath isn't the best meditation anchor, and how to support your body on an intensive meditation retreat. Self-Care does not equal beauty practices and services. It's available to all. Its goal is to give you the tools and resources you need to have the impact you feel inspired to make.2- The most important way to practice self-care is to be in a deeper relationship with your nervous system to recognize when you are edging towards depletion, so you can put extra strategies in place before you are burned out. These strategies can include yoga, physical activities, breath, meditation, diet, sleep, and more.3- Boundaries are another way to practice self-care: recognizing what you can say yes to, sustainably, and learning to offer an honest no when it's not sustainable for you. Get in the habit of saying I'll get back to you, so you can truly feel into it.4- Organization is another tool that will help you manage your life, schedule, and energy input and output. It will show you a clear picture of where and how you need to create spaciousness in your life.5- Find the choices you have available to you within your current circumstances and make the choice that supports you to show up the best way you can.QUESTIONS SHE ANSWERED DURING THIS EPISODE:Self-Care is a buzzword. Why do you think we still need to have this conversation… to continue to talk about it?What is self-care for you?In contrast, what is promoted as self-care, that might not really be it?What are some examples of self-care practices that would be available to all?ABOUT OUR GUESTAfter teaching yoga for ten years, Mado met her fairy godmother business coach. Before you know it, this bowl is so full, we can't see who we are anymore. The process of getting back to the core of who you are is to start emptying the bowl. Some people need a trauma, others have a restlessness and go on a quest for answers, others receive invitations from mentors and teachers. 2- All you need is within you. You are not lacking anything. We have all the answers. We have an immense capacity to learn, we have innate intelligence and wisdom. That's why journaling can be so powerful. It's a tool to tap into the answers you have within. When you invite yourself to look at yourself, you have an opportunity to shift, adjust, and transform. There's no way to improve yourself if you're not paying attention to where you are. When journaling, create a space where you will be uninterrupted, you are not distracted, start with open-ended questions. Invite yourself to reflect on your day. start paying attention to how you navigated your day and what kind of impressions you left on others today, pay attention to your daily you. 3- When we hold on to pain and trauma we are actually creating inner turmoil in our being. When you carry pain you behave differently than when you release pain. That's why we need to pay attention to our behaviors and choices. They are the symptoms of the pain we are holding. Acknowledge an event that happened, understand it to reframe your relationship to it, find the lesson and see if you learned it, then open yourself to let it go. Letting it go will create more space in your being for love and joy. 4-The higher you raise your vibration, the higher you can get to a place of observing yourself and your experiences without getting into shame, blame, or anger. So you are not triggered by emotions. It's easier for emotions to move through you if you are holding a positive energy field to deal with it. You have to be ready energetically before you can deal with it emotionally. To elevate your vibration, check in with your heart and your gut, pause, breathe deeply, open yourself and release stress and tension. When you feel light, your vibration is higher, you might smile more.5- Joy is your soul talking to you. Make room in your day for things that you enjoy and that make you smile. Get into the habit of finding ways to be joyful. It's a huge part of truly being who we are.QUESTIONS SHE ANSWERED DURING THIS EPISODE:Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your spiritual awakening journey? How did it change you?How do we enter our journey of self-discovery including the recognition of our spiritual self? How do we create a journaling container to be able to go deep in our reflections?Do we need to let go of judgment to truly start emotional healing? How does it look/feel to raise your vibration? How can we know if we are in a lower vs higher vibrational state? What is the concept of all you need is within you?If we do have limiting beliefs that get into our way, how do we start to get rid of them, or at least challenge them?ABOUT OUR GUESTDawn James became a Conscious Living teacher, after experiencing a spiritual phenomenon called Samadhi. They are divided into 4 chapters or books called pada. The first pada, which is where you'll find the sutras we are exploring today describes yoga, its goal, and why we want to focus on that. So are the gemstones. We, as humans can entrain our energy with the ones around us. The determination of the healing aspect of each stone has come from intuition and experimentation. And these findings have been validated through different cultures over time.2- For empaths, it's important to clear any new stones and to clear them every time you use them or wear them. In all cases though, trust yourself with what you need and follow their intuition on it.3- Sage, sound healing, moonlight, and saltwater are all good ways to clear stones.4- When picking a stone, take a few deep breaths, hold the stone, notice what it's "saying" to you, how do you feel, if it aligns with what you're looking for or in need of.5- As a practice, you can clear the stones, hold them, use affirmations with them, meditate with them, wear them on you, use them in home decor, on an altar, and in beauty routines. You can also place them in plants. Create a relationship with a stone. Add them to any healing or personal practices.QUESTIONS HE ANSWERED DURING THIS EPISODE:What is the difference between gemstones and crystals? What makes certain stones healing? Or what gives them particular properties? Do gemstones also carry energy from the rockhounds and all the people that have handled them before they got to you?Once we get new gemstones, how do we prepare them before using them? What are the rituals we can use to clear stones? What are some of the most common gemstones and their known effects? The color of the chakras and the gemstones doesn't always align, why is that? Can you give an example of practice so we can use the gemstones?ABOUT OUR GUESTPam and Andy are Spiritual Artists, Rockhounds, Sound Healers, and Entrepreneurs and are the creators of The Indigo Sanctuary, an online source of hand-crafted, Reiki-infused, yoga, home sanctuary, sound healing, gemstone healing, and meditation products.Pam is a Yoga Teacher, who focuses her practice on Yin Yoga. So Athleta has generously offered to give a $100 gift card for our giveaway.MY 5 BIGGEST TAKEAWAYS FROM THIS EPISODE1- You don't need to know everything. You just need to be a few steps ahead of your students. Don't think your teaching to yourself or other teachers, remember that most of your student just need self-awareness, to get into the present moment, to relax, to quiet down their minds. Things that are a given for you, where you are in your journey are new to a lot of other people. Get in a value-giving mindset. Be there to give. It will take some of the pressure off.2- Saying you're nervous can be helpful. It takes away the power behind the uncomfortable emotion. That way, you don't have to fake anything. It might help you connect on an authentic level with your students. You can also try a technique called image streaming.3- Don't speak about things you haven't emotionally processed properly yet.4- You need to also distinguish between a real mistake that holds consequences and something consequence less like a slip of the tongue. When you do such a mistake, you can point it out, laugh it off and keep going. Oftentimes, other people didn't even notice. When it's something really big, you might need to stop, officially correct what you said, and potentially apologize.5- You can't 100% trust your own heightened judgment of what is happening in real-time. A way to prevent making too many mistakes or getting too much in your head about the perceived mistake you're making is to stay anchored in the present.QUESTIONS HE ANSWERED DURING THIS EPISODE:What is public speaking and why is it something we should care about as yoga teachers even if it's not really covered in TT?How do we become less self-conscious? Get rid of self-doubt or our unconscious patterns that get in the way?How do we embody authority or power, presence, and aliveness? What do you think about announcing to your class that you are nervous? What can we do when we forget what we were saying or make a mistake to keep our composure? How can we use our own yoga practice to set our internal presence in a way that reflects an external presence of calm and leadership?ABOUT OUR GUESTSylvain Hache aka Sly is an ex-chronic stutterer that morphed into an award-winning, international-touring musician who has been interviewed on live TV & Radio in multiple countries, in 2 languages. He has been coaching and training people since the age of 16 and now helps you ‘'End-Stage Fright & Master Public Speaking, Anywhere From a Zoom Call to Carnegie Hall'' using Rockstar Presence Principles he distilled from over 500 shows in 35 cities and 5 countries on 2 continents. His website: www.RockstarPresenceSecrets.com''The Imposter Syndrome Crusher Course''Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/5a5fdec3a4d96aa520f89227. You guyyyyyyys. This is my podcast fan girl moment. When I first started scheming the idea of creating a podcast, Katy Bowman was at the top of my mental interview dream sheet. I’d recently found her work with everything I experienced with Diastasis Recti and was a huge fan. I’d read two of her books, listened to countless podcast interviews with her, and wanted to soak up as much knowledge as possible. From her work, I also discovered Jill Miller. The two of them have similar philosophies and teaching styles, but each have a superhuman amount of knowledge and wisdom to share. They collaborated to create the Walking Well program and make quite a powerhouse team together. AND they’re on the podcast this week!! Needless to say, when I recorded this interview with them, I was super nervous. I was trying to keep it together but couldn’t help but feel the creeping dread of imposter syndrome. They’re on another planet when it comes to movement and how the body operates and as an already awkward person, I felt like a bit of a goober interviewing them. BUT I did it! And they shared so many amazing tips and bits of advice in this episode. It’s one of my favorite *beefy* podcast episodes and I hope you enjoy hearing from them as much as I did. 065: Walking for fitness and movement longevity with Katy Bowman and Jill Miller Here’s what we talk about: - Walking as a personal fitness program as well as a family-friendly 'move more' activity. The importance of walking, especially for people who tend to choose higher impact activities. - The importance of alignment while carrying kids and/or their gear. What are the best ways to manage that? - Any tips to encourage kids to walk with you and enjoy it? - Why do some very fit people struggle with long walks? It could be because of the law of specificity in exercise, because of poor alignment, weak feet on strong bodies) - Why is walking so good for postpartum bodies? - And a Q & A segment from those of you who chimed in on Instagram (how many steps should we aim for each day, how to get back into yoga postpartum, tips for healing plantar fasciitis while remaining active) Here’s a bit about Katy and Jill if you aren’t familiar with their work: Katy Bowman, M.S., is a biomechanist, a movement educator, the creator of Nutritious Movement and the award-winning author of many books, including “Move Your DNA” and “Dynamic Aging”. An America Walks “Woman of the Walking Movement”, Bowman consults on educational and living space design to encourage movement-rich habitats. She has worked with companies like Patagonia as well as non-profits to ensure diverse socioeconomic groups benefit from her “move more, move more of your parts, move more in your life” message. Her site is www.nutritiousmovement.com. Jill Miller, C-IAYT, ERYT is the cofounder of Tune Up Fitness Worldwide, creator of the self-care fitness formats Yoga Tune Up and The Roll Model Method and author of the best-selling book on myofascial release “The Roll Model”. With more than 30 years of study in anatomy and movement, Miller has developed fitness programming for major gym chains such as Equinox, 24 Hour Fitness and Yoga Works, as well as Fortune 500 corporate clients and professional sports teams. She is recognized worldwide as a pioneer in forging relevant links between the worlds of fitness, yoga, massage, athletics and pain management. Her site is www.tuneupfitness.com. Ultimately, the practice changed his life. He became yoga certified in the summer of 2015 and began teaching that same year. As part of the few Filipino teachers in the yoga/wellness scene, Matty is committed to representing and fighting for an equitable voice in an industry that is often fraught with invisibilizing and marginalizing those who do not fit a popularized mold. Joining me on the show today are the following passionate and generous teachers...Juliana Machado (E-RYT 500) is a native of Brazil, who moved to New York in 2000 where she was introduced to yoga. She has taken 4 yoga teacher trainings since then: Ashtanga Primary Series a 200 Hour TT (2001), Forrest Yoga a 200 Hour TT (2006), and "Life of a Yogi" 500 Hour TT with Sri Dharma Mittra (2012), and the 800 Hour “Life of a Yogi” with Sri Dharma Mittra (2013). Juliana considers herself to be a lifelong student who is lucky enough to share and teach her lessons learned on this sacred science with all those who wish to receive it. She has taught in New York, Florida, California and in South America for the past 18. Juliana believes yoga is the "house of no judgement" where one of the best things a student can do is to practice as often as possible and never give up. Her teaching style comes from a belief in empowerment of the higher self and observance of the yoga ethical rules on and off the mat. She tailors her classes to fit needs of the ones in the room, so everyone in her class receives the maximum benefit from their time spent on the mat. With a background in contemporary dance and awareness through the movement, Juliana blends her artistic experience with her love of yoga, creating a unique space for self-exploration and discovery through the practice and power of yoga. Juliana believes that the highest we go, the easier it gets as we walk the path of yoga. After offering her classes widely across the globe, Juliana put roots down and opened Yoga Path for Healing in Catskill in 2017.Jacquelyn Nash is a yoga teacher and co-owner of The Yoga House. With her roots and practice firmly grounded in the Ashtanga lineage, Jacquelyn's classes draw from the foundational principles of that practice but also incorporate the softer and therapeutic applications of yoga that she has absorbed through various trainings. Jacquelyn teaches with the intention to make yoga accessible to all people and to demystify the “secret language” of yoga. Inspired by the light-heartedness but also sincerity of many of her teachers, Jacquelyn's approach to sharing yoga is nurturing, compassionate, and seasoned with a touch of humor. Jacquelyn also owns and manages Hudson Valley Wedding Yoga, which organizes yoga classes for weddings, bachelorette parties, and special events.Carisa Borrello is the director and owner of The Living Seed, which opened its doors to the Hudson Valley Community in the summer of 2000. Carisa is certified in Sivananda Yoga, Somatic Yoga, Yoga Tune Up®, completed the Forrest Yoga foundation course and two Advanced Teacher Training Courses with Ana Forrest, Gil Headly's 6 Day Human Dissection Workshop and is initiated into the path of Andean Mysticism with Elizabeth Jenkins and Don Juan Nunez Del Prado. She is a certified Hanna Somatic Educator (CHSE) from The Novato Institute for Somatic Research and Training, and a level 6 Student and level 1 Instructor of I Liq Chuan, the Martial Art of Awareness, a family style Kung Fu based on principles of Tai Chi and Zen philosophy. Carisa is eternally grateful for the devotion, wisdom and insight that all of her teachers and ancestors have shared with her. Their passion for their arts, for healing the human spirit and mending the hoop of the people are a daily inspiration. She is honored to practice and share the art of Hanna Somatics, Yoga and the Internal Arts- they are gifts - bringing us back to ourselves so we can heal, love and grow to express our highest potential. Carisa creates a sanctuary, a sacred place for people to deepen their relationship to their spirits through movement, mindfulness, meditation and creative expression.Today these ladies share how and why they got into yoga, how they became yoga teachers and then eventually yoga studio owners. We checked in on how they are doing business now with COVID forcing the closing of their physical spaces. They are all offering classes virtually and in person outdoors with some on demand options at the Living Seed and The Yoga House. They of course also offer private sessions and if you were inspired by Carisa's sharing of Hanna Somatics, she is also doing private sessions outdoors at her home and her studio which for pain management and other needs. They happily share how yoga has changed their lives for the better and offer ways to stay connected to the present moment versus in fear or anxiety during these uncertain times we are all navigating.Because we broadcast out of Kingston, NY, I wanted to also recognize the other Kingston based studios, The Hot Spot offering outdoor and online classes, and Yoga Lab offering online classes.Today's show was engineered Nick Panken host of Freedom Highway from radiokingston.orgOur show music is from Shana Falana !!!Feel free to email me, say hello: she@iwantwhatshehas.orgLeave me a voicemail with your thoughts or a few words about who has what you want and why! Stacy Jackson became a yoga teacher at the age of 50. She's not just any yoga teacher. She is a highly gifted teacher that will knock your socks off in her classes. In our debut episode of Age Thoughtfully, Stacy tells her journey active young mom/makeup artist to becoming a yoga teacher at 50. She talks about overcoming perfectionism, how to keep moving (both physically and otherwise) throughout our lives and flourish at any age. Stacy is a Los Angeles based 500 hour RYT yoga teacher, Yoga Tune Up teacher, as well as a Roll Model Method Practioner and RMM Trainer. Stacy has pursued yoga and movement practice since the 1990s. Stacy's full spectrum of training allows her to offer an interdisciplinary approach, emphasizing anatomy and biomechanics. Her classes blend Yoga Tune Up, with its therapeutic style of conscious corrective exercise, with the worlds of yoga, fitness, pain management, and myofascial self-care. She is passionate about guiding students toward finding intrinsic delight in living, moving and breathing, no matter their condition, age, or stage of life. Stacy's 4 (she gave us a bonus tip!) for Aging Thoughtfully: 1. Women or men who want to connect with themselves in a more embodied way through learning to move their whole body and not necessarily feel they have to exercise. You learn to move the whole body - you can do things in your life that are just around your house. That helps you to always have some of that movement happening in your body. We need to keep moving because if we don't, we're going to lose it. 2. Empowering, especially women, to embrace the idea that aging invites us to grow into a deeper beauty. It's no longer just the smile on your face, as much as it is the expression in your heart. With age comes this knowing. 3. Women and men can reclaim their significance and flourish, that's my word, when they create a conscious vision for their 50's, 60's, 70's and beyond. Imagine what your future self 10 years ahead - would be saying to you right now. I let that future self be a guide. 4. In order to flourish, take hold of the inner dialogue and rewrite the script. *Mentioned on the show: Tara Brach's second book is called, "Radical Compassion." --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/agethoughtfully/support

Obviously, she was wrong. In 2015, she completed her first teacher training through YogaWorks under the mentorship of Chrissy Carter and has been teaching full time since. After almost ten years practicing yoga, and only yoga, she developed pain in her hips. More yoga and passive stretching didn't help. Instead, she had to completely rethink her practice, and therefore her teaching, to give her body more strength and stability. This led Markella on a path of discovery, advanced education in anatomy, kinesiology, and biomechanics, and further training. Now she helps people move and feel better while doing the practice they love and in their daily lives. Her teaching style is grounded, light-hearted, and rooted in resilience and exploration.
