Nailah is passionate about exploring the natural world. She and her family are avid outdoor enthusiasts. A portion of Nailah's work is also in the great outdoors. She invites women of color to return to nature, a space that has always belonged to them too. Nailah isn't a graduate of the Hoffman Process, but her work in the world matches the ethos and values of the Process. At one time, Nailah knew she wasn't doing the work she was meant to do. After a bit of exploration, she found her calling. Since then, she's followed this call to diversify the outdoors, to guide people back into the wild and beautiful world of nature. As you listen to Nailah and Drew, you'll hear Nailah's commitment to the community of women she serves. The call to return to nature has been a thread through many of our episodes. The outdoors can be a healing and regenerative place for everyone. As Nailah shares, for many people, layers of marginalization serve as barriers to the outdoors. In today’s episode, I’m joined by coach and community builder, Nailah Blades Wylie. Nailah is the CEO of Color Outside, a curated travel company for ambitious women of color who are ready to create unapologetic, soul stirring lives through outdoor adventure. She started Color Outside as a safe place for women of color to come together and unlock where they're feeling stuck so that they can fully step into their joy and shine. When she's not leading adventure retreats or consulting with brands you can find Nailah hiking with her husband or playing intense games of hide-n-go seek with her two tiny kids. I have known Nailah for many years now — since we were both “young female entrepreneurs” in LA — and every conversation I’ve had with her has been filled with wisdom and insight that I want to immediately apply to my life. It was really an honor to have her on the show and to continue to learn from her. In today’s conversation, we talked about how she’s gotten comfortable with taking big leaps, how companies can do a better job creating more inclusive spaces for marginalized communities, and why it’s so important to her to get outside and help other women of color find joy doing the same. We also talk about: Her three-part framework for how to be a more inclusive brand Why decentering ourselves is the key to building better communities What having two kids and two companies has taught her about balancing the many requests for her time and energy Why now, maybe more than ever, it’s so important to keep dreaming . . . and so much more! I also want to note that we recorded this episode back on April 22nd. Had we had this conversation any time in the last three weeks, I have no doubt we would’ve talked about what’s going on in the world — and about how that’s impacted us individually, how that’s impacted the Black community, and why it just continues to highlight how important Nailah’s work is in the world. And, when I think about Nailah, I think about joy. I think about the joy she cultivates in her own life, I think about the joy she helps women of color find in the outdoors, I think about the joy she brings to the lives of the people who know her! I’m so grateful for this conversation, because everything we talk about — everything Nailah so graciously shares — is still so important to our current societal conversation. Thank you, as always, for listening. I recorded today's interview BEFORE the pandemic, so you're not gonna hear us talking about COVID 19. And you might be thinking...um.... in-person retreats are impossible right now. Yep. I realize that. And still, I'm interested in helping you explore the possibilities for your business not just this month or next month or even just this year, but FAR into the future. For everyone, and perhaps particularly for marginalized groups, IN PERSON events matter. In person connection matters. If you're feeling that, listen to this interview and think about how in person events might fit into the future of your business. Even before this pandemic, I ran my entire business online. I love the freedom being online gives me. I love being able to reach folks all over the world. I get to create relationships with people and help them with their businesses, and it's FINE if we can never meet in person. The rebel therapists I work with are from many time zones. AND I plan to do some in person work again in the future. I ran a retreat last year with my dear friend Rebecca Wong. Bonding with Rebecca and the participants, sitting with them, actually hugging them, breathing the same air, it all added so much depth to the work. It's something we can't do at the moment. I KNOW I'll do more in-person work in the future. That's why I'm talking to our guest today with you in mind, but also with me in mind. This week, I'm talking to Nailah Blades Wylie, founder of Color Outside. She's a professional coach, consultant, retreat leader, and communications strategist. She runs retreats and in-person events for women of color. That's the part of her work we're focusing on today, so that you can get a master class in what makes an in-person retreat successful. Here's some of what we talked about: Creating her first retreat because women were asking her for it. Why women sign up for her events (they're craving community) How she chooses her locations Why she always hires a photographer of color at every event How she keeps costs reasonable Creating a seamless experience for participants Adapting retreat activities for all ability levels Setting up retreats for both introverts and extroverts to thrive Allowing for free time in the schedule (and how she figured this out during a snow storm) Changing the way she uses her email marketing (away from a focus on selling and towards giving value) How in-person events fit into her overall business model How to get started with events if you have a small audience How she decompresses after a retreat Show notes at http://rebeltherapist.me/podcast/124

We live in a culture that is consistently sending messages to women, and especially women of color, that they aren’t good enough or don’t belong where they are or deserve what they have. In this refreshing episode, we talk with Nailah Blades about how she was taught from a young age to “take up space” and how spending healing time in the outdoors propelled her to start Color Outside, a safe place for women of color to come together, take up space, and explore the outdoors.
Imagine feeling like you don't belong in the very place that we should all feel welcome to play: the great outdoors. Nailah Blades Wylie created Color Outside to give women of color the safe space to experience outdoor adventures. After feeling disconnected from herself when she moved to Salt Lake City and stuck in the business she created, Nailah decided to reconnect to herself by exploring the abundance of natural beauty in her backyard. Before she knew it she was leading other women of color on adventures and a new business was born. I had such a blast talking with Nailah about her journey, the power of playing outside and the importance of women of color feeling welcome in the outdoors.
Lightbulb Moment: Business Breakthroughs and Personal Discoveries with Becky Mollenkamp
After college, Nailah Blades Wylie landed a dream job with a great salary, a corporate credit card, and a company car. It didn’t take long, however, for her to realize the job was more of a nightmare than a dream. So, she took the leap and started her own company. Her social media marketing agency quickly became more successful than she dreamed possible, but she still wasn’t happy. The problem? She was chained to her laptop and she lacked the freedom and flexibility she wanted. She realized she had left a 9 to 5 only to create another 9 to 5 (or more) job for herself. When she had her first child, she knew things needed to change so she could be the mom she wanted to be. At the same time, her family moved from southern California to Salt Lake City, Utah. In the midst of all that change, she finally felt ready and free to also shake up her professional life. She hit the reset button and started from scratch. She went outside, breathed in the mountain air, and took time to do some deep thinking. By disconnecting, she was able to reconnect with who she really was—and start the business of her dreams. More in this episode: Nailah discusses why Corporate America wasn’t for her and how she made the leap to entrepreneurship. She shares the realization that her own business was making her nearly as miserable as her last job, and how she decided to make another change. How having children finally gave her the push she needed to make big changes. How she felt about moving from California to Utah. Tips for how to discover your true calling, and how to integrate that into your life. How a small free Meetup group turned into her successful company, Color Outside. Why she says there’s tremendous power in “taking up space” and how she’s helping women of color find unapologetic joy in doing so. How her life has changed since creating Color Outside, including the positive effect it has on her parenting and on her daughter. Why “weird on paper” is making her so much happier than “right on paper.” Nailah Blades Wylie is a coach and consultant who helps women live more colorful, adventurous lives. She started Color Outside as a safe place for women of color to come together and explore the outdoors. The Color Outside community is made up of women of color challenging themselves to new adventures, all while changing the face of the outdoor industry. Together, through local meet-ups, in-person retreats, and online communities, they push their bodies to new heights, reconnect with who they are at their core, and strengthen their ties as a community. They don’t let anyone question their right to take up space.
