Casey White is a Marine veteran that decided to give back to the veteran community by starting a non-profit dedicated to helping vets get outside and be active. As a veteran that has PTSD he found that being out in nature and doing active sports helped him cope with the struggles that come with such a diagnosis. Because it works well for him, he wanted to share that with other veterans and to create a community where they all feel welcome. I personally was able to join a MTB Campout event that he put on and it was truely inspiring seeing the lives that one event touched. Disconnect to Reconnect is not only based around mountain biking but has had many other activities like Surfing, Golf, Snowshoeing, and Hiking. Casey plans to continue to grow the non-profit and add as many different disciplines as possible that is not only available to all veterans, but free of charge as well. For the mtb event there were demo bikes, saftety gear, campsites, meals, and even beers offered for the vets in attendance all completely free. Are you allowed to ski, snowmobile and bike on the scenic highway between Sisters and McKenzie Bridge when the snow gates are closed during the winter and spring? The answer used to be yes, but now, it's a lot more complicated.

Video Version: https://youtu.be/GZDLlQxEo88Picture strapping on a pair of Wildhorn snowshoes feeling the crunch of fresh snow beneath your feet as you set off along the scenic Homestake Trail in Leeds, South Dakota. That's exactly what I did, embarking on a snowy journey filled with the thrill of a first-time snowshoer and the history of the gold-laden Homestake Mine. As my snowshoes paired with my trusty Columbia Bugaboo 3 boots trench through the pristine powder, I share my thoughts on selecting the right gear for the adventure and how my Outdoor Vitals hoodie and insulated pants played a vital role in keeping the chill at bay. Now, let's talk about the real workout snowshoeing provides. Traversing a 1.3-mile trail within the city limits of Lead was no walk in the park—it was an hour and a half of exhilaration and burn that any fitness enthusiast would relish. As I navigated the terrain, the cleats on my snowshoes gripped the snow, proving indispensable for steady strides and energy-saving steps. Join me as I recount the experience, shedding light on the nuances of snowshoe design, and welcome you to contribute your wintery tales of outdoor escapades. We used to think that winter was for hunkering down inside and planning for warm-weather activities in the parks. But that all changed one day when we rented snowshoes in Yellowstone on a zero-degree February day. After an exciting day experiencing the uncrowded backcountry covered in a deep blanket of snow, we were hooked. The scenery was breathtaking, and we had several wildlife encounters that would not have been possible in warmer months. Now, we make a point to snowshoe at least a few times each winter in our incredible public lands. In today's episode, we talk about some of the basics of getting started snowshoeing and suggest trails to explore in twelve national parks that are great for this outdoor winter activity.   Our Patreon account is now up and running with bonus content. I recorded this while snowshoeing in the forest outside of the small town of McCloud in Siskiyou County, California. We received more than a foot of snow over the few days prior to the day this was recorded, with a couple inches of fresh snow the night before, and I wanted to try making a binaural recording while snowshoeing. I was carrying an umbrella because the snow was wet and melting out of the trees, and I was wearing a fleece jacket(my snow jacket is really noisy while walking and moving around) and I didn't want to get too wet. I was also carrying the umbrella because the falling snow makes a nice sound as it falls on it, and would otherwise not make any sound at all. This is the first binaural recording I have made while snowshoeing, and I thought it turned out alright so I'm sharing it with you. I hope you like it! Often times during the colder months, you might cut back on your running and training because well…it's frickin' cold outside, and sometimes the roads are iced over and slippery to run on. Plus you may not want to run on the treadmill all Winter long. So instead of losing all those gains you've made during the Fall with your running, adding in snowshoeing in place of one of your long runs or one of your maintenance runs, will help you get outside safely, move your body, and maintain what you've already built. In today's episode, I'll share the 4 benefits snowshoeing can provide your running and why I think you should add it to your fitness mix!Mentioned in this episode:Episode 028: How to Use the Winter Months to Realign Your Running and Focus on Your Weak LinksLet's Connect!Email me at pamela@pamelaotero.comJoin me LIVE on Facebook @heycoachpamelaSnag my running resource "Running Made Ridiculously Easy"
