Nailah Blades is a Life and Leadership coach and a lover of the great outdoors. She's our last non-grad guest in our short series of four non-grads. Nailah is passionate about exploring the natural world. She and her family are avid outdoor enthusiasts. A portion of Nailah's work is also in the great outdoors. She invites women of color to return to nature, a space that has always belonged to them too. Nailah isn't a graduate of the Hoffman Process, but her work in the world matches the ethos and values of the Process. At one time, Nailah knew she wasn't doing the work she was meant to do. After a bit of exploration, she found her calling. Since then, she's followed this call to diversify the outdoors, to guide people back into the wild and beautiful world of nature. As you listen to Nailah and Drew, you'll hear Nailah's commitment to the community of women she serves. The call to return to nature has been a thread through many of our episodes. The outdoors can be a healing and regenerative place for everyone. As Nailah shares, for many people, layers of marginalization serve as barriers to the outdoors. For women of color, returning to the outdoors is an embodied reminder of the great power of knowing that the land, seas, and mountaintops are places where everyone belongs. More about Nailah Blades: Nailah Blades is a Life and Leadership coach who helps leaders tap into their power to build personal and professional lives that are whole, good, and full of possibility. She founded Color Outside, a community for Black, Indigenous, and women of color who are ready to create unapologetic, soul-stirring lives through outdoor adventure. Through high-touch coaching that integrates the outdoors, Nailah teaches her clients how to go from languishing to flourishing in every area of their lives. Her work centers on the belief that when we stand in the truth of our authentic selves, we can live and lead in a way that creates real change in our world. Nailah is the author of Joyful by Nature: Outdoor Adventure as Women of Color. Created for the modern woman of color, Joyful by Nature is a guide to reconnecting with nature and reclaiming your place in the outdoor community. In this powerful message, we're called to examine the idea of unity in Christ, using Moses' life as a profound example. Moses, raised in two distinct cultures - Hebrew and Egyptian - gives us insight into navigating diverse perspectives. We're challenged to recognize that our perceptions are shaped by our past experiences, previous pain, and societal pressures. The message urges us to move beyond isolation and ignorance, which often lead to unintentional insensitivity. Instead, we're encouraged to 'color outside the lines,' intentionally connecting with those different from us. This aligns with Christ's role as a connector, in contrast to the devil's divisive tactics. The central scripture, Acts 7:20-22, reminds us that God can use our diverse backgrounds for His purpose, just as He did with Moses Ethos is a life-giving community committed to keeping Jesus at its Center. We are on a mission to love all people in Jesus' name so that we may all Know God, Find Freedom, Discover Purpose, & Make a Difference. Bio taken from IMDB One of the most respected Latina actresses in Hollywood, April Hernandez-Castillo's personal life story is one of victory. Her feature film debut as Eva Benitez in the Image Award-nominated MTV film, Freedom Writers (2007), alongside Academy Award-winner Hilary Swank, put her in the ranks of some of the biggest names in the industry. An actress with a blend of unlimited expression and humor, the Bronx (NY) native made her stage debut at the famous New York Comedy Club in New York City as a stand-up comedienne. As an actress, April expanded her stage experience to television. She got her first acting break as the Yo/Yoa Girl alongside NBA All-Star Houston Rockets center Yao Ming in the 2004 Super Bowl Visa Check Card national commercial. Next came major television roles that would include NBC's Emmy-award winning series ER (1994), Law & Order (1990) and 30 Rock (2006). Keeping an eye on the big screen, in 2007 she tried out for the role of a lifetime and got it--in "Freedom Writers". She would co-star alongside one of Hollywood's biggest stars, Hilary Swank. It was in this role that April would catch the attention of The View (1997) producers, who invited her to co-host the show. Reaching critical heights, her portrayal of Eva Benitez earned her recognition and critical acclaim confirming her status as one of the more talented up-and-coming actresses. Displaying the talent and drive to parlay success into a career as a respected actress, April garnered roles in the pilot Blue Blood (2008) on Fox and Showtime's Nurse Jackie (2009), CBS' Person of Interest (2011) and received a SAG Award nomination for her role as Officer Cira Manson in Showtime's award-winning drama Dexter (2006), a role in John Mitchell's sci-fi comedy The History of Future Folk (2012), guest-starred as Danny Pino's sister on NBC's drama Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (1999) and appeared in two episodes of FOX's hit show The Following (2013). April has demonstrated her versatility as an actress. However, her latest role is not in front of the camera but as a motivational and inspirational speaker. What does it mean to be a couple that colors outside the lines? Relationship coach, research psychologist, and sex educator Dr. Joli Hamilton is here to answer that question. From an early age we're all taught that we need to get married, have kids, and settle down. So, is there something wrong with you if that path isn't fulfilling? Absolutely not! For many people, being in a consensual non-monogamous relationship is what's right for them.    A recent study found that 40% of the millennial generation is open to non-monogamous relationships. There's so much out there to be explored, and we're not just talking about sex. If we can communicate our needs and wants effectively, we can absolutely have it all. So many of us lose ourselves by doing what we think we're supposed to do. Life is meant to be explored and experienced. Let Dr. Joli Hamilton educate you on getting in touch with your true self. As journalists we tend to sprinkle superlative terms such as industry legend around a little too liberally. But today's guest definitely qualifies. As a founder of Renaissance Re Jim Stanard helped completely transform the way the industry analyses and underwrites catastrophe risk and cemented Bermuda's place in the insurance and reinsurance world. He also co-founded global challenger reinsurance broker Tiger Risk. Now he is back in his heartland as chair of the newly-independent Ariel Re. Here we talk about everything you would ever want to know about how to be a successful underwriter building a sustainable portfolio. Listening back it is a remarkable conversation and one marked by Jim's extraordinary good humour and openness. We spent a lot more time laughing than is normal in a serious hard market reinsurance conversation. But that is all down to Jim's open-mindedness and remarkably broad interests. I hadn't met him before this meeting but it really doesn't show. I learned a lot, including that this industry leader has a not unimportant side line on the music scene. So do enjoy the conversation. A couple of Notes: Jim told me later he misspoke about Lotus being the first spreadsheet package and meant to say Visicalc. And the quote about predicting the future is variously attributed to Yogi Berra, Sam Goldwyn or Danish physicist Niels Bohr, depending on who you ask. LINKS Jim's album "Color outside the lines" can be streamed on Spotify and is available on Amazon and other music sellers. Go to: www.jimstanardmusic.com to find out more. In this episode of Luna Soul, Color Outside the Lines, we'll be chatting about the Sacred Feminine. According to the website, Home to Her, a movement dedicated to helping women and men reclaim Sacred Feminine wisdom, The Sacred Feminine is first and foremost a historical (make that her-storical) fact – as evidenced by an abundance of myths, art and archeological evidence dating back nearly 30,000 years. She is also a powerful spiritual idea in Her own right, with distinct characteristics and principles that distinguish Her wisdom from the dominant religious traditions of today. Most importantly, according to Home to Her, She is the remedy for a world desperately out of balance. Female-identified bodies, along with attributes, emotions and experiences that have traditionally been labeled as “feminine,” have repeatedly and historically been viewed as less important and less relevant than male bodies, attributes, and experiences. The Sacred Feminine represents the drive to restore balance and wholeness first to ourselves, then our communities and our planet.

Craig Hatkoff is a disrupter at heart. His accolades span many arenas - Craig is a prolific real estate investor, co-founder of the Tribeca Film Festival, best-selling children's book author, philanthropist, expert on innovation - and the list could go on. But most importantly, Craig has been able to craft a life filled with creativity, passion and storytelling by collecting as many “dots” of experiences as he could - and connecting them looking backwards. We especially love this conversation with Craig, because he not only shares stories of his own deeply interesting life experiences, but also tactical tools we all can use to develop our own life bucket list. He walks us through how to disrupt the status quo both within big institutions - like investment banking and film festivals - and spaces that don't even exist yet, like writing children's books about dealing with trauma and loss. Each step of the way, Craig has managed to fit in without losing his ability to stand out. Join us for an energizing conversation about disrupting the status quo from within, not being afraid to experiment, and the real reason why you need to collect as many “dots” as possible (hint: it even has its own mathematical equation!). Some stuff we also cover: Exactly how Craig went from being a real estate investor for twenty years to writing a children's book (and why no one tells you how to get published) The inspiration behind the Tribeca Film Festival and why it's not like every other fancy festival in the world How to organize your free time in order to develop as many creative ideas as possible Why it's extremely important for your brain to do stuff that's not related to your “core competency” (i.e. that book club isn't a waste of time) Resources you might want to check out: Social media: @craighatkoff Website: tribecafilmfestival.com As always, this podcast is sponsored by: Daydreamers. As I dive into these conversations with artists and entrepreneurs about play and creativity I will come on to do solo episodes once in a while. They will usually be inspired by something I've noticed with our guests or concepts within play that are interesting. I hope you'll come along for the ride!   Today I want to talk about being an explorer in your life - a theme that I've seen with some of The Recess Life guests so far. Exploring is trying on different skills, interests, occupations, activities etc. for the purpose of discovering oneself.   Nailah Blades Wylie went from working in a corporate career to a life coach to the head of her own marketing agency and now runs Color Outside, a company that takes women of color on outdoor nature adventures.   Jenny Feinberg had a 10 year career in politics, then started a coworking community business with hundreds of San Francisco creatives and is now a watercolor artist.   Nailah and Jenny's stories are not unusual for other people that have found fulfilling work. They explored who they really are before landing at where they are at today. Does the idea of being exploratory feel like permission to try lots of things or does it make you feel like you are indecisive and flaky?   In today's episode I talk about why: playing and having an exploratory period with different interests can help you find fulfilling work there is no such thing as “being behind” if you delay choosing a specialty in life. Our cultural narratives make it so challenging to have a playful exploratory approach to life exploring different interests does not make you flaky or indecisive   Mentioned in this episode and resources on being an explorer in your life. Range by David Epstein Puttylike- a website about how to navigate life as a multipotentialite (someone with many interests and creative pursuits) Refuse to Choose by Barbara Sher Google any of these terms: polymath, multipotentialite, scanner and generalist TEDx Talk: Why Some Of Us Don't Have One True Calling - Emilie Wapnick I hope this episode encourages you to play and explore more with different interests and paths. I promise it can only help you to learn more about yourself.

Imagine feeling like you don't belong in the very place that we should all feel welcome to play: the great outdoors. Nailah Blades Wylie created Color Outside to give women of color the safe space to experience outdoor adventures.  After feeling disconnected from herself when she moved to Salt Lake City and stuck in the business she created, Nailah decided to reconnect to herself by exploring the abundance of natural beauty in her backyard. Before she knew it she was leading other women of color on adventures and a new business was born. I had such a blast talking with Nailah about her journey, the power of playing outside and the importance of women of color feeling welcome in the outdoors.
