Jay Revell has written two wonderful book, "The Nine Virtues of Golf" and his latest "Swing, Walk, Repeat". In this special bonus segment of Next on the Tee, Jay talks about the year he spent writing "Swing, Walk, Repeat." He and his family, like all of us, were faced with challenging times during the Covid-19 outbreak. Jay spent time playing a few holes in the evening with his faithful sidekick Leon walking the course with him. Jay used that time to reflect on life and get his thoughts together. He decided to write those thoughts down and they turned out to be 230 love letters to the game of golf and its impact on his life. We get to hear a little slice of that journey, what inspired him to write the book and his evenings with Leon.

Tom Coyne doesn't need much of an introduction. If you are a golf reader, his name will be familiar. Coyne is the author of a handful of moving golf books including a couple New York Times Bestsellers. His golf tales include popular titles such as A Gentleman's Game, Paper Tiger, A Course Called Ireland, A Course Called Scotland, and his latest effort, A Course Called America. In those books, Coyne takes readers along with him on a series of ambitious adventures. All of which begin with a looming question and become a journey of personal discovery. In these beautifully told tales, Coyne takes readers right along with him on cross country adventures that provide a backdrop for stories about the people and places that make golf a game worth playing.  In addition to his books, Coyne has found a number of other impressive outlets to tell golf stories through. In recent years he has made a home at The Golfer's Journal where he has authored numerous essays and articles about his experiences in the game. Recently, he has been named Senior Editor for the publication. Coyne has also spent time in front of the camera hosting a variety of shows included a digital series called The Links Life that chronicles his worldly travels. All of which is impressive for a married father of two girls who teaches full time at St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia.  I've known Tom Coyne for a few years now and have thoroughly enjoyed his company on and off the golf course. He's been a great guide on my own golf writing career journey and was even kind enough to write the forward for my first book, The Nine Virtues of Golf. I'm excited to dive into his latest book and with his new role at The Golfer's Journal I'm looking forward to have him edit some of my work.  Coyne joins me on Mid-Am Crisis to talk about A Course Called America, his plans to promote the book this Summer, and what his new role with The Golfer's Journal means for his career. We talked about life and golf of course and as always his sense of humor and enjoyable disposition made for a great conversation. I'm hopeful our travels will lead us to playing together again soon and perhaps he even will give me a good grade on my next submission to The Golfer's Journal. Ryan Carey is one of golf's top memorabilia experts. He is a Co-founder of the highly reputable company Golden Age Golf Auctions. Since founding the company with his partner Bob Zafian in 2006, Carey has become the go-to figure for those looking to buy or sell the greatest treasures from golf history. With a Rolodex that spans the globe, he has helped bring hard to find items like major championship trophies, rare clubs, limited edition books, early golf photography, autographed items, and other unique finds to market. You may remember the story of his company(originally named Green Jacket Auctions) getting sideways with the folks at Augusta National Golf Club after selling a few of their precious coats. Today, with a new name and an impressive track record, the phone is ringing more than ever. The golf boom brought on by the pandemic has only grown the market for collectors and Golden Age Auctions continues to deliver. Carey joins me on Mid-Am crisis to talk about his most recent auction which was headlined by a collection of Gary Player's major trophies. We also talked about his personal collection, what items he imagines will be hot in the coming years, and a few artifacts he wishes he could get his hands on. Beyond selling the coolest stuff in golf, Ryan Carey is also a great guy and true lover of golf. I'm hoping that we can tee it up and talk some more history soon. Every time we chat I learn something new about the game. This episode is no different. Alan Shipnuck is one of the most prolific writers in golf. His stories and columns on the game have long been among the best writing in the sport. He began his career as a sort of "child prodigy" at Sports Illustrated and a few decades later is Senior Writer for Golf.com and Golf Magazine. Shipnuck is best known for writing long-form pieces that dive deep into the people and places that he's covering. He's also a great follow on Twitter and very generous in helping new writers find opportunities to share their work on a big stage. I can speak to that from personal experience. Shipnuck always makes for a great chat and we spoke as he was just getting home from a week in Augusta, Georgia for the historic 2020 Masters tournament. Shipnuck was one of the limited number of media members present at the fanless November Masters and in our conversation, he offered a full breakdown of the vibe on the ground there. We also discussed the state of media in the game, how technology has changed our understanding of greatness among the top professionals, and what life is like living in one of America's great golf meccas. After talking with Shipnuck, I'm looking forward to the next time I can visit the Monterey Peninsula, especially with an invite to play with him on the table. Brad Payne is one of golf's most interesting new entrepreneurs. After working with tech giant Apple, he ventured out on his own to found Walker Trolleys. They make what is unquestionably the most beautiful push-cart in golf. His product first started turning heads at the 2020 PGA merchandise show which is where we first met. I've wanted a Walker Trolley of my own ever since seeing Brad's in action that week at the Winter Park 9. Since the PGA show, Brad and I have stayed in touch. I've been thrilled to follow his company's progress as the popularity of the Walker Trolley has exploded during the COVID19 golf boom. As a religious walking golfer, I love what the Walker Trolley represents.  With the recent announcement of No Laying Up's investment in the company, Walker Trolleys is poised for even more success. This week, Brad joins me for a discussion about how golf is a good fit for those with an entrepreneurial spirit, the importance of good design, the golf scene in Austin, Texas, and some of the places he's taken the Walker Trolley so far. I'm hoping my wife will listen so that she knows what to get me for Christmas.  For more information on Brad Payne and his wonderful Walker Trolleys please visit www.walkertrolleys.com  For more episodes of Mid-Am Crisis please be sure to subscribe on your favorite listening app or visit www.midamcrisis.com If you enjoy the show and want to find more of my musings on golf including my book The Nine Virtues of Golf, please visit www.jayrevell.com

One of my favorite people I've met through golf in recent years is Matthew Galloway. He's among the top caddies on the LPGA Tour and a hell of a good golfer himself. Galloway is a recovering mini-tour player who traded his playing dreams for success with a caddie bib. Before turning pro, he won the Florida Amateur Championship and was a three-time Division II All-American at the University of West Florida(He was recently inducted into the UWF Hall of Fame). Galloway also had a few minutes of stardom when he appeared on the Golf Channel's Big Break Mexico. After retiring from the mini-tour scene, he took a chance and started caddying on the LPGA Tour. He's been at it ever since and has carried the bag for players like Michelle Wie and Angel Yin. I've been lucky to cross paths with him a few times including most recently when he looped for me at Streamsong Resort during the LPGA's pandemic break. In this episode, Galloway joins me for a conversation as he comes off the road for the upcoming birth of his daughter. We talked about the approachable vibe of LPGA Tour, his recent trip to Bandon Dunes, golf in the Sunshine State, and of course what he's feeling like as an expectant father. If you don't know of Matthew Galloway, hopefully, this chat will change that. I'm thrilled we got a chance to catch up and will be hoping that his paternity leave from tour life means we can meet up for some golf soon!
