The story continues in which Devi, Goddess Kali and a group of Matrikas destroy the demonic brothers Shumbha (chapter 10) and Nishumbha (chapter 9). In the final battle against Shumbha, Devi absorbs Mother Kali and the Matrikas and stands alone for the final battle.

Chapter 9 of Devi Mahatmyam describes the killing of the demon, Nishumbha, by Goddess Chandika. The Devi Mahatmyam comprises chapters 81-93 of the Markandeya Purana. Kaalaratri Devi is the destroyer of darkness within. She is an incarnation of Goddess Parvati and is said to have destroyed the demons Shumbha, Nishumbha, and Raktabeeja. She controls Lord Shani and also Sahastrachakra (the seventh ckahra, situated in the head). Her ride is a donkey, she is dark in complexion, and carries a sword and an iron hook.
