Tonight's lecture is a Hallowe'en special! After all, Śaiva and Śakta Tantra is chock full of ghoulish mortuary iconography: Mā Kālī's garland of skulls, Lord Śiva's garland of snakes, their retinue of ghosts, goblins and vampires, their home in the cremation grounds (ghat), fierce fanged dākinī and yoginīs and so much more. It's no wonder Hallowe'en is my favorite holiday! Tonight, to celebrate, let's discuss Tantrik demonology and the role of mortuary and gory iconography in texts like  Bhairava Stava of Abhinava Gupta, Candi and Swami Vivekananda's poems to Mā Kālī. The first part of this lecture is just an introduction to the zoology of supernatural beings mentioned in Indian literature and spiritual texts like the Purānas, Rāmāyana and Mahābhārata etc. (listed below for your convenience) and the second part of the lecture is a discussion on 4 or 5 ways to "exorcise" or at least banish the influence of these spirits in your own home so that you may practice safely and uninterruptedly. Dangerous Supernatural Beingsपिशाच, Piśācaवेताल vetāla as seen in the वेतालपञ्चविंशति, Vetala Panchavimshatiराक्षस Rākṣasa (like Rāvaṇa, Hidimba and Hidimbi, Ghatotkacha, Bakasura, Alamvusha)असुर Asura (like Madhu and Kaitabha, Mahishasura, Shumbha and Nishbumbha in Candi) Somewhat Dangerous but Mostly Just Mischeivious and Often Good Supernatural Beings अप्सरा Apsarā (story of Menaka and Vishwamitra as told by Shakuntalā, story of Arjuna and Urvashi)गन्धर्व Ghandarva (like Pushpadanta who composed the Shiva Mahimna stotra)यक्ष Yaksha यक्षिणी Yakshini (Fairies)Happy Hallowe'en!Jai Mahākāla!Support the show

Kalaratri The 7th form of NavaDurga is known as Goddess Kalaratri. She is considered to be the most ferocious avatar of NavaDurga and is known for destroying ignorance and removing darkness from the universe. During the devastation created by the demons, Shumbha and Nishumbha Goddess Parvati took the avatar of Kalaratri Devi. It is said that these two demons invaded the Devlok that is the abode of the Demi-Gods. After getting frustrated the Demi-Gods prayed to Goddess Parvati to help them defeat the asuras. It is then when Kalaratri avatar was created. This avatar is depicted as a destructive form of the Goddess. She can be seen riding a dark black donkey. Her complexion is dark black and she has four hands. The positioning of her hands is in Abhaya and varada mudra and she carries a sword and an iron hook in her left hand. It is said that she licked the blood of demon Rakta Beeja, who had the potential to create more demons from his own blood. Because of the powers she possesses, she is also referred to as Goddess Shubhankari. Ashish P. അസുരകഥകൾ  S1 EP1 - മഹിഷാസുരൻ: https://youtu.be/YDmCSTWyo5MThe story of Sumbha and Nisumbha begins in the fifth chapter of the Devi Mahatmyam. Parvati relates how two brothers of Asura stock sought to conquer the Three Worlds by subjecting themselves to severe penance and purification rituals so that no man or demon could destroy them. Sumbha and Nisumbha traveled to Pushkara, a sacred place, and remained there in prayer for ten thousand years. God Brahma saw the brothers' penance, and was pleased, granting them the boon they requested. It was at this time that Chanda and Munda, two lesser Asuras in the service of Shumbha, encountered Parvati, and were overwhelmed by her beauty. They carried reports of this goddess to Shumbha, who sought to possess Parvati and her beauty. Shumbha sent the demon Sugriva to court Parvati, but she rejected his advances. It was then decided by the demonic brothers that if Parvati would not come willingly, they would have to abduct her. The demon Dhumralochana and his retinue of sixty-thousand Asuras were sent to abduct Parvati, but she took the form of Mahakali and managed to slay the entire army. Next, Chanda and Munda were deployed, then Parvati destroyed them.Parvati got the epithet Chamunda from destroying Chanda and Munda.Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCvLdcej_7W3IEtMx-e-rOeAFacebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/t2vstudioPodcast: https://www.buzzsprout.com/1186121 #amaanushikam #Amaanushikam#Amaanushikam #Amanushikam #amaanushikam #amanushikam
