Tonight's lecture is a Hallowe'en special! The story continues in which Devi, Goddess Kali and a group of Matrikas destroy the demonic brothers Shumbha (chapter 10) and Nishumbha (chapter 9). In the final battle against Shumbha, Devi absorbs Mother Kali and the Matrikas and stands alone for the final battle.

After the killing of the demon, Shumbha, the gods became very happy and began to praise Goddess Katyayani (Chandika). Narayani is the “innate power behind the ultimate God”, and also the one “who provides the basis for all living beings.” She is the power behind Lord Narayana. The verses describe her attributes and express the gods' gratitude to the Goddess for saving them from the demons. The Devi Mahatmyam comprises chapters 81-93 of the Markandeya Purana. It narrates the stories and exploits of Durga in her fight against the demons. Chapter 10 of Devi Mahatmyam describes the killing of Shumbha, the king of the demons and the brother of Nishumbha, who was slain by Goddess Chandika. After the other Shaktis merged with her, the Goddess engaged in battle with Nishumbha and finally killed him. The Devi Mahatmyam comprises chapters 81-93 of the Markandeya Purana. It narrates the stories and exploits of Durga in her fight against the demons. Chapter 5 of Devi Mahatmyam talks about how the demons, Chanda and Munda, after seeing Goddess Kalika, praise her beauty to their masters, the demons, Shumbha and Nishumba. Shumbha sends a demon called Sugreeva as his emissary to plead his suit with Kalika. But Kalika's reply is that her suitor should win her in war, thereby taking away her pride and proving to be her equal in strength. Chapter 6 of Devi Mahatmyam describes how the demon, Shumbha, when told of Goddess Kalika's response to his marriage proposal, becomes angry and sends his commander, Dhoomralochana, to capture her and bring her to him. But Kalika killed him in no time, and she as well as her mount, the lion, killed the rest of his army. Devotees chant these verses during Durga Pooja to invoke Durga's blessings and protection. Chapter 7 of Devi Mahatmyam describes how the fierce and terrible-looking Goddess Kali appeared from the forehead of Goddess Kalika to kill Chanda and Munda, the servants of the demons, Shumbha and Nishnumbha, who had sent them to capture Goddess Kalika. After she kills them, Kali takes their severed heads to Goddess Chandika, who tells her that henceforth, she will become famous in the whole world as Chamunda, the slayer of the two demons. Devotees chant these verses during Durga Pooja to invoke Durga's blessings and protection. Kalaratri The 7th form of NavaDurga is known as Goddess Kalaratri. She is considered to be the most ferocious avatar of NavaDurga and is known for destroying ignorance and removing darkness from the universe. During the devastation created by the demons, Shumbha and Nishumbha Goddess Parvati took the avatar of Kalaratri Devi. It is said that these two demons invaded the Devlok that is the abode of the Demi-Gods. After getting frustrated the Demi-Gods prayed to Goddess Parvati to help them defeat the asuras. It is then when Kalaratri avatar was created. This avatar is depicted as a destructive form of the Goddess. She can be seen riding a dark black donkey. Her complexion is dark black and she has four hands. The positioning of her hands is in Abhaya and varada mudra and she carries a sword and an iron hook in her left hand. It is said that she licked the blood of demon Rakta Beeja, who had the potential to create more demons from his own blood. Because of the powers she possesses, she is also referred to as Goddess Shubhankari. Ashish P. Parvati relates how two brothers of Asura stock sought to conquer the Three Worlds by subjecting themselves to severe penance and purification rituals so that no man or demon could destroy them. Sumbha and Nisumbha traveled to Pushkara, a sacred place, and remained there in prayer for ten thousand years. God Brahma saw the brothers' penance, and was pleased, granting them the boon they requested.It was at this time that Chanda and Munda, two lesser Asuras in the service of Shumbha, encountered Parvati, and were overwhelmed by her beauty. They carried reports of this goddess to Shumbha, who sought to possess Parvati and her beauty. Shumbha sent the demon Sugriva to court Parvati, but she rejected his advances. It was then decided by the demonic brothers that if Parvati would not come willingly, they would have to abduct her. The demon Dhumralochana and his retinue of sixty-thousand Asuras were sent to abduct Parvati, but she took the form of Mahakali and managed to slay the entire army. Kaalaratri Devi is the destroyer of darkness within. She is an incarnation of Goddess Parvati and is said to have destroyed the demons Shumbha, Nishumbha, and Raktabeeja. She controls Lord Shani and also Sahastrachakra (the seventh ckahra, situated in the head). Her ride is a donkey, she is dark in complexion, and carries a sword and an iron hook.
