Has festival cheer brought India's consumption story back on track?

High inflation failed to dampen festive spirits during the Navratri as people, especially in cities, went on shopping spree. The latest CMIE Consumer Pyramids Household Survey shows, during September, the index of consumer sentiments rose to a 30-month high.  Elaborating on it, Mahesh Vyas, the managing director and CEO of the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy, on Monday said while the consumer sentiments rose by 7.1 per cent in September, the unemployment rate also dropped to a four-year low of 6.3 per cent during the period. Vyas emphasised that the fall in unemployment rate and the improvement in consumer sentiments was witnessed across both rural and urban regions. While urban consumer sentiments increased 9.3 per cent, rural sentiments rose by 5.6 per cent in September.  The respective indices of consumer sentiments were at their highest in 30 months. Although rural India lost some steam in October, its 30-day moving average Index of Consumer Sentiments is at its peak since April 2020.  Despite high inflation and high interest rates, the CMIE survey recorded a sharp increase in the propensity of households to buy consumer durables in September across both rural and urban regions. In fact, there are signs of improvement in consumption across segments. The recent Redseer 2022 Ecommerce Festive Sales report reveals that the online retail market touched 5.7 billion dollars in gross merchandise value, registering about 27 per cent growth from a year earlier, during the first week of the festive season – from 22nd of September to the 30th.  Mobile phones continued to lead the market during this period. The report also found that online shopper-base had jumped by 24 per cent over the corresponding period last year. While 65 per cent of the shoppers came from cities other than metros, the spending by each online shopper also increased by three per cent during the particular festive week. Auto sales were also buoyed by the festival cheer.  The Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations, or FADA, reports that this Navratri, retail vehicle sales were up 57 per cent to over 5,30,000 units, from slightly above 3,40,000 units during the Covid-hit 2021-22.  Sale of all categories of automobile, including two-wheelers, three-wheelers, commercial vehicles and tractors, put up a strong show during the Navratri this year [FADA]   In a major boost to the automobile sector, not only were overall sales increased by 27 per cent compared to Navratri-sales last year, but also 16 per cent above the pre-pandemic 2019 season.  The numbers were a clear indication of the fact that after a gap of three years, customers are returning to the showrooms in a big way. One of the indicators of a worrisome K-shaped economic recovery has been the recent trend in auto sales, where expensive SUVs have seen brisk sales, while two-wheelers found few takers. But, this Navratri, even the two-wheeler category, which was showing weakness when compared to pre-Covid months, registered single-digit growth. The current year's two-wheeler sales numbers were 20 per cent higher than 2020 and four per cent higher than 2019. In fact, all categories showed positive momentum when compared to the pre-Covid Navratri 2019. FADA estimates, this positive trend is likely to continue till Diwali. This indication of a broad-based recovery in consumption will be a welcome trend, since a recent survey conducted by UBS Securities India indicates that affluent consumers were upbeat about spending during the festival season, but those in lower-income groups did not share their optimism.  A Bank of Baroda report in September shared that the production of daily consumption items, which continued to see elevated price pressures, showed a drop in April-July 2022 and also when compared to pre-pandemic levels. Meanwhile, items like liquor, travel goods, bottled water, aerated drinks and passenger vehicles, especially in the high-end segment, showed m

RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das last week said that the central bank was assuming the Indian crude basket's price to be 100 dollars per barrel in the second half of FY23, down from around 104 dollars per barrel in the first half. This estimate underpins the central bank's growth and inflation projections. Which is why the recent decision by the OPEC+ to impose larger-than-expected output cuts in a bid to spur a recovery in crude prices could become a cause for concern. Against that backdrop, we delve into the possible impact on India. After the oil, let us shift our focus to the pharmaceutical industry. The World Health Organization has issued a global alert over four cough syrups made by an Indian pharma company, saying that they could be linked to the death of 66 children in The Gambia. It has also triggered a probe from the Indian government. We ask who all are responsible for the quality checks of Indian pharma exports. Moving on to markets, retailers ended the nine-day Navratri festival season with a bang. Sales of consumer goods were the highest in 2-3 years this time, as consumers indulged in out-of-home purchases despite price hikes. The surprisingly steady sales, despite inflation, have turned analysts bullish on the sector as they see the festive season adding more sheen to related stocks. Take a deep dive into the sector's prospects, and lists stocks that are on analysts' radar In a bid to cut down on environmental waste and save consumers from buying different chargers for different devices, the European Parliament on Tuesday voted in favour of legislation to standardise the charging port on electronic items. It selected USB Type-C, better known as USB-C, as the standard port. But why did it choose USB-C as the standard port? What makes it the gold standard of charging ports? This episode of the podcast tries to answer.

India's consumption sector is playing on the front foot this festive season, as consumers rush to markets and restaurants after two dull years marred by the pandemic.   Despite price hikes, inflation and muted rural demand, aggregate sales volume for consumer goods remained steady during the July-September quarter. Analysts see the trend sustaining as discretionary demand remains strong in the middle and upper-middle class of population. “Huge pent-up demand continued to fire growth in most discretionary segments in Q2FY23. Staples consumption in rural India remained more impacted, than overall urban consumption, due to inflation. Going ahead, rural demand is expected to bounce back in second half of FY23 on low base, and favourable monsoon,” says Amnish Aggarwal, Head of Research, Prabhudas Lilladher.  His assessment may be playing out on the ground at the moment. The recently concluded nine-day Navratri festival saw retailers clock their highest footfalls in two-three years across segments such as automobiles, consumer appliances, and apparels.  And since price hikes taken by companies in Q1 have been absorbed well by customers, analysts expect this consumption trend to remain strong, given festive period, and year-end celebrations in Q3FY23.  Deepak Jasani, Head of Retail, HDFC Securities says, Nifty FMCG index outperformed in Q2FY23. Also, improving sentiment ahead of festive period boosted returns. Sustainable recovery in rural FMCG growth could be the next big trigger, he indicates. Jasani expects FMCG companies to witness significant gross margin expansion between FY22-24, assuming normalisation of input costs and partial reversal of price hikes. From an investment view-point, Nishit Master of Axis Securities PMS likes EIH, Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail, Maruti Suzuki, M&M, Tata Motors, Westlife Development, Jubilant Food, Trent and Bata. As regards today, global cues, oil prices and stock-specific action will guide the investor sentiment.

By the end of September, summer starts giving way to the fall. The pleasant weather also ushers in harvesting and festival season in the entire country-- which starts with Onam and Navratri and goes on till Diwali. People go on shopping spree, flooding markets and shopping malls. Online purchases also hit the peak during this period. Mobile phones, TVs, fridges, washing machines sell like hot cakes due to the irresistible offers. But what about cars? Hit hard by pandemic, passenger-vehicle makers were waiting for the festival season for more than one reason. First, they expect to see record volumes. Second, they expect a swift recovery in their profitability to pre-Covid levels. CRISIL Research says that cumulative retail sales in October and November are expected to touch a record 650,000-700,000 units. And dispatches to dealers are expected to cross a million units in the September quarter. But there is a spoiler.  The waiting game The good news may not extend to you, the buyer. Across brands, the average waiting period for popular models is about three to four months. This suggests that there may be more buyers chasing new cars than the carmakers can supply. Shortage of chips and pent-up demand in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic are the reasons. Expect limited discounts & offers So, buyers should expect limited discounts and offers. And, offers will mostly be limited to vehicles seeing low demand, such as some entry-level hatchback models. In the beginning of September, the industry was estimated to have about 700,000 pending bookings, with Maruti Suzuki alone accounting for 377,500 units.  The likely trend So what will be the trend this festival season? There will be strong demand for top-end trims on the one hand, and negligible discounts on select models on the other. The sales trend till August indicates that while the growth momentum has continued for SUVs, it has hit a plateau for sedans. So, those looking for discounts may want to try their luck with the latter. So, how much can you expect to save even where discounts are on offer?  An analysis of available reports on recent offers shows that you may bag discounts ranging from Rs 20,000 to Rs 45,000, that too depending on the model and trim. Finance schemes and exchange bonus benefits will also be there. But, that is a far cry from past festival season sops. Discounts on passenger vehicles had reportedly gone up to 1 lakh rupees for some models in 2019. Even where discounts are on offer, they are small for the most part.  Mahindra, which only recently started deliveries of the Scorpio N, has bookings for 100,000 units. And, depending on the variant, the waiting period is 70 to 90 weeks. There is not much incentive then to offer good discounts. In the beginning of September, Autocar India reported that Honda was offering discounts and benefits on its fourth and fifth-generation City, Amaze, Jazz and WR-V models. The fifth-generation Honda City, a midsize sedan, got the most discounts. On offer were either a cash discount of Rs 5,000 or free accessories worth Rs 5,496. A discount of Rs 5,000 and a bonus of Rs 7,000 was also on offer on car exchange. However, no discounts were on offer on the City Hybrid. Right before the start of the festival season, Maruti Suzuki offered discounts on the Ciaz, XL6 and Ignis. It is offering benefits of up to Rs 48,000 for all variants of the Ciaz sedan. The Ciaz saw a 29 per cent year-on-year drop in sales in August 2022. It was also Maurti's worst-selling model that month, accounting for just 1.13 per cent of total units sold across models.  For Ignis, a small hatchback, the automaker is giving a consumer offer of up to Rs 10,000 and an exchange offer of up to Rs 15,000. Maruti Suzuki has also been offering heavy discounts on Celerio, S-Presso and Dzire in September. Tata Motors has also come out with offers for Navratri, Dussehra and Diwali. But, it is offering discounts on five models, which are

Nava' In Sanskrit means Nine,Ratri is Night. Navaratri means nine nights. The origin and the legend are detailed in Wikipedia. The scope of this blog is limited to the period of observance, the poojas to be performed and the meaning of the Poojas.  The beginning of spring and the beginning of autumn are two very important junctions of climatic and solar influence. These two periods are taken as sacred opportunities for the worship of the Divine Mother. The dates of the festival are determined according to the lunar calendar. Navaratri represents celebration of Goddess Durga, the manifestation of Deity in form of Shakti [Energy or Power]. The Navaratri festival or ‘Nine Nights festival' becomes ‘ten days festival' with the addition of the last day, Vijayadashami which is its culmination. On all these ten days, the various forms of Mother Mahisasura-mardini (Durga) are worshipped with fervor and devotion.' avoided). Traditional dishes like sundal are offered to visitors. On all these days , Coconut, fruits , betel leaf and nut are to be offered as Naivedyam. I will be blogging details of Sarawathi Pooja and Vijaya Dasami one day earlier to the functions. Valor ,Wealth and Knowledge are the three attributed one needs to succeed in Life. These three aspects are reflected in the personification of these three Deities. While Durga stands for Valor, Lakshmi is for wealth(not merely economic prosperity, but all round happiness and contentment), and Sarasvati for Knowledge and enlightenment. In all these Poojas these deities are invoked and their Blessings are sought. For more details including Slokas to be chanted, Navratri dates,Thithis and audio , audio links and authentic websites for Slokas read What is Navaratri,How to Perform Pooja and related articles in Ramanis blog. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/ramanispodcast/message

Conscious texting is now available on the telegram text channel. Here is the link to join the free channel globally. http://t.me/leelagurukul In Tantra, we honor the divine feminine in many of her forms. Each form represents a part of us that we need to heal, expand, and evolve. In this meditation, Chandresh guides the students to tap into the rooted feminine that lives within all of us. The rooted feminine represents the one who is willing to understand the roots, heal the roots, and go beyond the trauma, anger, and resentments that are all holding back the nurturing of the roots. We invite the students to do this meditation during the upcoming Navratri time, as it will be a powerful meditation to invoke the rooted feminine energy. If doing this meditation in nature, simply be connected to nature as you do this practice. If doing this meditation inside, we recommend also lighting a candle and keeping roses at the meditation altar. We hope this meditation is helpful to everyone as they connect with the powerful healing energy of the rooted feminine within.  Visit cbmeditates.com to send your questions and to know more about Chandresh's work.

Navratri and Ramzan both come with a set of rules of dos and don'ts. Sure, it's time for fasting and self-cleansing but it's not just about what we eat or when we eat rather, it's a life altering phenomenon that focuses on discipline. As Greek philosopher Plato is believed to have said, "Abstinence is the surety of temperance", it is 'Parhez' or abstinence that trains us to patiently endure. In this episode of Urdunama we explore what Parhez means to poets. Tune in as we read Ismail Merathi, Josh Malihabadi, among others who either advocate or refrain from 'parhez'.
