Here's what we're reading, recommending, and revisiting this week.Catherine's library find is Cranky, by Phuc Tran with illustrations by Pete Oswald. It's a picture book starring a crabby crane who does not want to talk about what's bothering him, so don't ask! Mentioned: The Food Group series, also illustrated by Oswald.Terri's random recommendation this week is some Apple synergy: Apple Music playlists from our beloved Shrinking (an Apple TV+ show). You can listen to songs from season 1 and season 2 (that one includes the extended, very profane version of "Cheater B*tch"). Mentioned: "Collateral" (which plays just before the accident Louis causes) and "Looking Too Closely" (from the final minutes of season 2).In the archives, we checked in on an episode from 2022 on pondering praise.Next week's lineup: Lost S2 E6, "Abandoned," on Tuesday, January 28A Man on the Inside S1 E1, "Tinker Tailor Older Spy," on Wednesday, January 29Weekly roundup on Thursday, January 30Until then (and anytime you're in need), the archives are available.

Today we read, The Couch Potato, by Jory John and Pete Oswald.
This episode of Reading With Your Kids begins with two of our favorite guests Scott Rothman and Pete Oswald. Scott and Pete return to the show to celebrate their new children's book "Bubblegum Bison Needs a Bath." Rothman is the author and Oswald is the illustrator. They have collaborated on five books together and love working as a team. Rothman writes in a visual style that lends itself well to Oswald's humorous illustrations. The guests discussed the creative process of writing and illustrating picture books. Scott tells us how much he loves seeing Pete's illustrations, which often include hidden jokes and details. They brainstormed ideas for future books involving the adventures of Blue Bison and Bubblegum Bison. The second half of the episode featured author Courtney Cino celebrating her book "The Lights That Stay." This story inspires children with themes of growth, resilience, and self-esteem. Cino emphasized the importance of helping kids visualize themselves achieving goals in the future. Courtney believes families reading books together is a way to bond and have meaningful conversations. Cino's background in biotech marketing provided insights into the similarities between creating compelling visual stories in that field and writing picture books. Both require carefully refining content to concisely convey important messages through words and images. Click here to visit our website - www.readingwithyourkids.com

Today, Lainey and I read Mingo the Flamingo by Pete Oswald and Justin K. Thompson.
In this, our second interview, I talk with award-winning children's author Tara Lazar about her new picture book, Flat Cat (Flamingo Books, 2023), illustrated by the also-illustrious Pete Oswald. We talk about where ideas come from, and the process by which the finished text leaves the author's hands and becomes an illustrated picture book. We also discuss her fabulous children's (everyone's, actually) dictionary of absurd words, published last year, and her Storystorm project in which thousands of writers come up with thirty ideas for new stories each January. On our latest weekly roundup, Catherine is sorely tempted by some very cute kittens (it's easy because they live 2,000 miles away). Mentioned: Heidi Wrangles Cats on Instagram. What we're watching: It was time for that Dancing with the Stars staple, "My Most Memorable Year." As always, that meant lots of emotional, barefoot contemporary dances (and a bunch of Viennese waltzes) followed by judging that seems extra harsh, what with all the hearts on all the sleeves. We also returned to The Gilded Age with season 2, episode 1: "You Don't Even Like Opera." Once again, there is scheming, secrets, and many, many elaborate hats. Mentioned: Commentary on the show from the Fug Girls (on their website for season 1 and their Substack for season 2) and Alan Sepinwall at Rolling Stone.Catherine's library find this week spotlights a series called the Food Group, from illustrator Pete Oswald and author Jory John. Check out The Bad Seed, The Good Egg, The Big Cheese, and many more.In the archives, we revisit episodes in which we discussed signs of senior-parent-itis (October 31, 2022), Halloween hassles (October 31, 2019), and the scariest places we've been (November 1, 2016).Next week, our TV watch will cover "Monster Night" (Halloween) on Dancing with the Stars, and "Some Sort of Trick" on The Gilded Age.
