Meniscus tears have historically been treated with arthroscopy. However, compelling data has shown that this surgery does not work for degenerative meniscus tears. Physical therapy, conversely, has been shown to be a more effective measure for the degenerative meniscus tear, and is a more reasonable first-line measure compared to arthroscopic menisectomy. Still, the public's perception, guided by decades of advice from Sports Medicine Specialists that arthroscopy is the answer for all meniscus tears regardless of the chondral condition in the knee, has not changed with current evidence. This can create uncomfortable conversations with patients who have a degenerative meniscus tear and expect arthroscopy. Coming to us from the University of Buffalo, Drs. Nomi Weiss-Laxer and Leslie Bisson discuss their study examining patient perceptions and expectations of nonoperative treatment for degenerative meniscus tears.

Archaea are one of the three domains of life on earth, but these organisms are much more mysterious and less understood than either Bacteria or Eukaryotes. Dr. Alex Bisson is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology at Brandeis University. His laboratory studies Archaea, primarily focusing on Haloarchaea. Dr. Bisson discusses how Archaea are able to shape-shift from one cell shape to another, how Haloarchaea are able to grow at extremely high salt concentrations, how Archaea cope with being “squishy”, how common polyploidy (multiple copies of chromosomes) is among Archaea, how Haloarchaea are able to desalinate soil to allow trees to grow, how Haloarchaea can lie dormant inside Himalayan Pink Salt, and how Boston is an intellectually stimulating place to do science. In season one of Our Connected Culture we explore how late science fiction author Terry Bisson's lifelong activism was central to how he imagined a better world in his 1988 novel Fire on the Mountain, using previously unreleased and archival audio of Bisson and as well as interviews with friends and comrades including Peter Coyote, Kim Stanley Robinson, Annalee Newitz, Paul Park, Mary Corey, John Kessel, Cory Doctorow, Jacob Weisman, Rina Weisman, and Karen Brenchley. The episode features commentary from Kim Stanley Robinson, Annalee Newitz, Paul Park, John Kessel, Jacob Weisman, Rena Weisman, Karen Brenchley, Cory Doctorow, and Ramsey Kanaan talking about the role Terry played in creating progressive science fiction community. This is also the final book club episode for Fire on the Mountain, covering through the end of this an alternative history centering around a socialist utopia emerging in the U.S. South a hundred years after the success of the Harpers Ferry raid led by John Brown sets off a self-emancipating revolution. We're going to talk about Terry for two more weeks here at Our Connected Culture before closing up this season: Next week, we'll be sharing audio of Terry narrating The Left Left Behind, Terry's own contribution to the PM Press Outspoken Authors series he edited, that was shared with us by the publisher. (Thank you again to Ramsey and everyone else over there.) Then at the end of the month will have one last episode of this season to go deeper on Tomorrowing, the collection of Locus columns we talked about briefly today and during our first episode. We're also going to keep our virtual book club going, so you can join us to talk about Tomorrowing in our Discord for a live discussion at 1pm eastern time on May 26th! In this conversation with Steve Bisson, you'll learn all about mentorship - both giving and receiving - within private practice. Steve discusses both his personal experience and the broader implications of mentorship in the professional development of therapists and mental health workers. The episode delves into the core facets of finding and offering guidance in an often complex and challenging career path. Throughout the episode, we unpack the nuanced differences between mentorship and other forms of professional development tools such as business coaching, as well as the organic nature of establishing pivotal mentoring relationships. The discussion emphasizes the importance of authenticity and trust in these relationships, illustrating how mentorship can significantly influence personal growth and career progression. The episode is filled with anecdotes and strategic advice, inviting both new practitioners and experienced professionals to consider the impact of mentorship on their journey through the mental health field. Key Takeaways: Mentorship can be a pivotal factor in the personal and professional development of mental health professionals, often provided informally and based on mutual respect. The difference between business coaching and mentorship lies in the financial component and the structure; mentorship is often more organic and less goal-oriented. Seeking out mentors or becoming a mentor is an exercise in generosity, leveraging one's experience and knowledge to empower others. It's crucial to establish mentoring relationships that feel authentic and comfortable for true growth and learning. Mentorship extends beyond monetary value and is deeply rooted in the spirit of giving and leaving a legacy.
