BREAK: CU of GA STORY 1: Construction proceeds on development near Sprayberry High Construction is underway at the former site of the Sprayberry Crossing shopping center in East Cobb, bringing excitement to the area. Developer Atlantic Residential has plans for a 17-acre site, including 132 age-restricted apartments for adults aged 55 and older, 102 townhomes, and up to 30,000 square feet of retail space. The development is tentatively named East Cobb Walk and may include an age-restricted complex called EVOQ at East Cobb Walk. The apartments are scheduled for completion in late 2024, with townhomes built by Toll Brothers opening around the same time. The retail portion of the project is still being finalized, with inquiries from restaurants, medical companies, and breweries. The redevelopment of the blighted Sprayberry Crossing site has garnered community support and is expected to improve property values and local businesses....…….Get more stories like this from mdjonline.com STORY 2: Acworth's Classic Car Cruise brings in a crowd The Lake City Cruisers hosted their final Classic Car Cruise event of the year in downtown Acworth. The event attracted car enthusiasts and collectors from across the state, offering an opportunity for people to admire and discuss classic cars. Attendees engaged with owners who shared stories of acquiring and restoring their vehicles. Some cars had been meticulously restored, while others were found in personal ads or junkyards and lovingly brought back to life. The event surpassed expectations, drawing hundreds of visitors within the first few hours. All proceeds from the event supported the Horizon Field, an all-inclusive special needs sports facility in Acworth. The Lake City Cruisers plan to continue the event in 2024. STORY 3: Adaptive games in Marietta give 200 special needs athletes star-player treatment Marietta City Schools organized the Adapted Games, an event tailored for nearly 200 students with disabilities. Held for the third year, the event aimed to provide students with disabilities an opportunity for fun, athletic, non-competitive play. Coordinator Bethany Walter modified physical education activities to be safe and inclusive, accommodating children who use wheelchairs or have other disabilities. The students participated in various activities, including cornhole, parachute games, outdoor bowling, long jumps, and small wheeled carts. Approximately 140 volunteers, including students, school employees, Best Buddies Leadership Development program members, and Rotary Club of Marietta members, ensured the event's success. Teel threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Aidan Guilbeau in the third quarter, securing Allatoona's first lead of the game. Teel finished with 160 yards passing and two touchdowns, connecting well with Camden Phillips, who had five receptions for 98 yards. The Buccaneers' defense was crucial in the victory, with their kicker, Gray Kelley, contributing three field goals. Despite a late push from Woodstock, including a touchdown pass from Peyton Lynch to Chase Colina, Allatoona held on for their first win of the season, giving new coach Brad Smith his first victory as well. STORY 5: Walton rallies to beat North Cobb, remain unbeaten In a thrilling game, third-ranked Walton overcame a three-touchdown deficit to defeat 10th-ranked North Cobb 35-27. North Cobb started strongly, taking a 21-0 lead with Nick Grimstead's two touchdown passes and Kaleb Narcisse's scoring pass. However, Walton mounted a comeback, scoring three quick touchdowns to tie the game at 21-21. They eventually took the lead and held on for the victory. Walton's quarterback Jeremy Hecklinski threw for 285 yards and four touchdowns. The win keeps Walton undefeated in Region 5AAAAAAA, positioning them as a strong contender in the league. We'll be back in a moment Break: DAYCO – DRAKE – POWERS STORY 6: Buddhist meditation class comes to northeast Cobb Kadampa Meditation Center Georgia is offering a new modern Buddhist meditation class called "Beyond Anger" in northeast Cobb starting on October 17. Taught by Buddhist nun Kelsang Dechok, the series runs every Tuesday through November 21 at the Peace Chapel in Unity North Atlanta. The course aims to provide accessible meditation techniques to help individuals become calmer and happier in their daily lives, focusing on moving beyond anger and achieving a peaceful state of mind. The center, a not-for-profit organization run by volunteers, has been serving Atlanta since 1998 and is part of the New Kadampa Tradition and the International Kadampa Buddhist Union. Single classes are $15, and the six-week series costs $60. STORY 7: Glover Park Concert Series The Glover Park Concert Series in Marietta Square was a beloved tradition that brought the community together for free concerts on the final Friday night of each month from April through September. The series featured diverse musical talents, including local artist Bill Needs, showcasing genres like classic rock, jazz, beach soul, and country. Commercial: CU of GA - ELON Story 1 Woodstock woman arrested for Jan 6th A Woodstock woman, Lisa Marie Eisenhart, and her son, Eric Gavelek Munchel, from Tennessee, have been sentenced in a D.C. court for their involvement in the January 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol riots. Munchel, known as the "zip tie guy," received a 57-month prison sentence followed by 36 months of supervised release, along with a $2,000 restitution order. Eisenhart was sentenced to 30 months in prison, followed by 36 months of supervised release, and a $2,000 restitution order. Both were convicted of various charges related to their actions during the riot, including conspiracy to commit obstruction, obstruction of an official proceeding, and entering and remaining in the Capitol building. Additionally, Munchel was found guilty of carrying a dangerous weapon on Capitol grounds. The judge stated that their actions indicated an intent to take senators hostage, although all senators and their staff had evacuated.....……… Read more on this story at tribuneledgernews.com STORY 2: Etowah Alum White Sox Sawyer Gipson-Long, an alum of Etowah, made his MLB debut for the Detroit Tigers and secured a 3-2 win over the Chicago White Sox. The 25-year-old pitcher impressed with his performance, striking out key White Sox batters and displaying composure throughout his debut. He pitched into the sixth inning, allowing two runs and four hits while striking out five without issuing any walks. Gipson-Long showcased an arsenal of pitches, including a vulcan changeup, sliders, and fastballs, keeping the White Sox hitters off balance. His debut was a memorable moment, and he received strong support from family and friends in the stands, with custom jerseys made in his honor. Back in a moment Break: ESOG - Drake - Dayco STORY 4: Driver killed in I-575 crash in Cherokee County A fatal car crash occurred on Interstate 575 in Cherokee County, resulting in the death of the driver. The accident took place around 10:30 p.m. on a Friday night between Riverstone Parkway and Airport Drive. According to the Cherokee Sheriff's Office, it was a one-car crash where the vehicle left the roadway, struck multiple trees, and subsequently caught fire. Tragically, the driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, lost their life at the scene. Story 5: Woodstock defeats Lassiter for first win in 2 1/2 years Woodstock secured its first victory in 2½ years with a 20-10 win over Lassiter. Chase Colina played a crucial role, recording 116 receiving yards and a 56-yard touchdown reception on a halfback pass. Woodstock's defense held Lassiter to just 27 total yards in the first half and 107 yards for the game. Lassiter's Tyler Aromin kicked a field goal in the third quarter, narrowing the deficit to seven points, but Woodstock responded in the fourth quarter with a 31-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Peyton Lynch to running back Isaiah Payton. The county's Board of Elections has informed the Secretary of State's Office about the issue, and an internal investigation revealed that these ballots were not opened and processed as they should have been. However, the uncounted ballots would not have affected the election results. Five of the ballots were absentee ballots from the May 2022 election, and the remaining 13 were provisional ballots from the November 2022 election. It is unclear if this discovery is connected to the delayed mailing issue from last November. STORY 3: Kennesaw Mountain HS Observes 9/11 Kennesaw Mountain High School held a 9/11 remembrance ceremony where cadets presented and raised the American flag to half-staff. The ceremony featured a moving tribute, including the playing of taps by student Alessandro De Cesare and a somber speech by Petty Officer Justin Richard, who is part of the school's Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps. Richard emphasized the significance of remembering the lives lost in the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the impact on the entire nation. The ceremony aimed to honor those who perished and acknowledge the trauma the nation endured, emphasizing unity and respect. Chattanooga built a 17-0 lead by halftime, but Kennesaw State made a second-half rally. Quarterback Jonathan Murphy led the charge, completing 12 of 16 passes for 181 yards and a touchdown. Kennesaw State came close to closing the gap, but a replay review nullified a crucial pass completion, ultimately sealing their fate. Despite their fourth-quarter surge, Kennesaw State struggled to gain yards, especially in rushing, with only 102 yards on the ground. Missed opportunities plagued Kennesaw State throughout the game, including missed field goals. Artopoeus shined for Chattanooga, connecting with Sam Phillips for two touchdowns, securing their halftime lead. We'll be back in a moment Break: Powers - Ingles 8 - JRM STORY 7: KSU launches $62.3 million construction projects Kennesaw State University is moving forward with two construction projects approved by the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia, with a total budget of $62.3 million. The first project involves the construction of a new 600-bed residence hall on the Kennesaw campus, costing $50 million, in response to increased enrollment and demand for on-campus housing. The Summit II residence hall will be adjacent to The Summit student housing and is expected to open in time for the fall 2026 semester. The second project allocates $12.3 million for the renovation of KSU's Stillwell Stadium, home to the Owls' baseball team since 1984. This renovation, funded mainly by private donations, includes a complete overhaul of the stadium, with a new turf playing surface, improved lighting, safer fencing, new dugouts, media areas, concessions, and an expanded seating capacity of 1,500. The reconstruction coincides with KSU Athletics' move to Conference USA in the 2024-25 academic year. Both projects aim to enhance campus facilities and better serve the growing university community. STORY 8: Jerica for Congress Cobb County District 2 Commissioner Jerica Richardson, a Democrat, has filed paperwork to run for U.S. Congress in 2024, specifically for Georgia's 6th Congressional District. The incumbent is Rep. Rich McCormick, a Republican. Richardson's supporters have created a campaign committee called "Jerica for Congress" and launched a campaign website and social media accounts. She has scheduled a kickoff event for September 14. Although the 6th District was previously represented by Democrat Lucy McBath, redistricting has made it a safe Republican seat.
