Poll: Majority of Cobb voters ‘likely' to support 30-year transit tax A new poll indicates that a majority of Cobb County voters are likely to support a 30-year program to expand transit and build a new rapid bus system. According to the poll commissioned by the Cobb Business Alliance, about 63% of voters said they would likely support a 30-year, 1% sales tax to fund transit in next November's election. However, the level of support varied depending on the phrasing of the question, with undecided voters ranging from 9% to 25%, and opposition consistently around 25-28%. The Cobb Business Alliance is a nonprofit group led by Cobb Chamber of Commerce Chairman Greg Teague, Chamber President/CEO Sharon Mason, and Amanda Seals, the chamber's executive vice president of advocacy and government relations. The group's mission is to educate the public about the upcoming referendum but refrains from taking a position on it. The poll was conducted from November 10th to 13th. BREAK: CU of GA STORY 1: ‘It's just magical': Powder Springs celebrates the Christmas Spirit Santa Claus participated in Powder Springs' parade and tree-lighting celebration, bringing holiday cheer to the community. The parade featured various groups, dancers, and McEachern High School's marching band. Candy was distributed, and Santa rode in a vintage Chrysler, delighting the crowd. Mayor Al Thurman expressed pride in the community turnout and led the tree-lighting ceremony. Families enjoyed a holiday medley by Powder Springs Elementary Chorus and took pictures with Santa afterward. The event included a Christmas Village with food, giveaways, and entertainment by local organizations. The city's event coordinator, Michele Coursey, expressed joy at the community coming together. STORY 2: Arab-Israeli Group Calls for Peace in Marietta Talk The Sharaka group, meaning "partnership" in Arabic, is a multinational organization aiming to promote peace through diplomacy and collaboration among people of diverse nationalities and ideologies. It originated from the Abraham Accords, signed in 2020 between Israel and Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, and Morocco, with mediation by the U.S. under the Trump administration. The Accords aimed to normalize relations between Israel and the Arab countries. Sharaka advocates for the Accords, emphasizing their significance in transforming the Middle East landscape. The organization works towards fostering understanding and normalization between nations, despite challenges from radical groups, particularly those led by Iran, such as Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon, and militias in Iraq. Sharaka calls for unity among moderate nations to counter radicalism and promote peace in the region. The group emphasizes the human aspect of conflicts and the possibility of bridging divisions through relationships and understanding. STORY 3: Cobb Jail Detainee Dies From Apparent Aneurysm A 36-year-old detainee, Jose Roberto Razo, died from an apparent aneurysm at Cobb County jail. Medical personnel suspect an aneurysm as the cause of death, pending confirmation by the Cobb County Medical Examiner. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is conducting an external inquiry, with the sheriff's office also conducting an internal investigation. Razo's arrest earlier in the year involved an armed confrontation with police, and he had been the subject of 911 calls regarding his behavior. Highland Rivers serves a crucial role in south Cobb, an area with high rates of uninsured individuals. The facility, costing $1,085,000 annually, received $750,000 from Cobb for renovations, addressing mental health and substance abuse needs for over 700 youth annually. STORY 5: Time is of the Essence for Lung Cancer: Wellstar Experts Wellstar Health System is urging individuals with a history of smoking, including those who quit 15 years ago or more, to undergo lung cancer screenings for early detection. Dr. Bill Mayfield, the medical director for lung cancer screening, emphasizes that early detection significantly increases the chances of successful treatment. The highest-risk individuals are those who smoked at least a pack a day for 20 years or more. Even after quitting, the risk persists due to lingering particles in the lungs. Wellstar Kennestone Hospital prioritizes swift treatment with STAT clinics, enhancing communication among specialists and ensuring a prompt diagnosis and treatment plan. Early detection and rapid treatment have proven life-saving, as exemplified by a 12-year lung cancer survivor's experience. The proposed map significantly alters the 6th Congressional District, currently GOP-controlled, to comply with the Voting Rights Act. The redrawn 6th District aims to have a Black-majority voting-age population, covering parts of Cobb and Fulton counties, along with Douglas and Fayette counties. Changes to the 7th District, currently represented by Democrat Lucy McBath, include removing it from Gwinnett County and incorporating predominantly white areas. The proposed map faces criticism from McBath's campaign, while other districts remain largely unchanged. COBB LIFE for December 3rd Publish Date: November 29th Henssler :15 INTRODUCTION From the Henssler Financial Studio, welcome to Cobb Life, proudly brought to you by the Marietta Daily Journal. I'm your host, Keith Ippolito, waving the flag for the BG Ad Group. And a big shoutout to our show's sponsor, Credit Union of Georgia, for making it all happen. Today, I had the pleasure of chatting with David Caroll, the news anchor for Local 3 News in Chattanooga. You might recognize David from his regular column in the MDJ, where he shares humorous columns. David and I delved into his latest book release, 'I Won't Be Your Escape Goat,' a compilation of misspellings, misinterpretations, and mishaps he's encountered throughout his career. These gaffes seem never-ending, whether attributed to voice-to-text technology, spellcheck mishaps, or simply not paying attention during English class. Regardless of their origins, these social media blunders serve as a humorous source of amusement. I think we all can agree on one thing: the world could use a bit more laughter. Additionally, I had the pleasure of exploring David's 'Hail to the Chief' column. We discussed its inspiration and David's personal Mt. Rushmore of presidents. So, sit back, unwind—it's Sunday—and let's immerse ourselves in the essence of Cobb Life. The shooting took place on September 13, resulting in the death of a 49-year-old individual. Frison was apprehended by Cobb Police on November 25, then transferred to Atlanta police custody and subsequently to the Fulton County Sheriff's custody on November 27. Frison had previous charges for drug possession and other offenses in Cobb County. STORY 2: UPDATE: Grand Jury Declined to Bring Charges in Police Shooting of Austell Man Last year, a Cobb grand jury decided not to charge a Cobb police officer, Ian McConnell, in the shooting death of 28-year-old Devonte Brown. Brown was killed on August 18, 2021, after a car chase involving a stolen vehicle. The grand jury's decision was revealed after Brown's lawyers released body camera footage of the incident. The footage shows Officer McConnell firing 12 shots into Brown's vehicle after it collided with police cars. Brown's family and their attorney, Harry Daniels, condemned the shooting, claiming Brown was not a threat. Daniels plans to file a civil rights violation lawsuit and explore a wrongful death lawsuit. STORY 3: Cobb Commission Approves 11 New Mental Health First Responder Positions The Cobb Board of Commissioners has unanimously approved 11 new first responder positions as part of the Cobb Co-Responder Program, a collaboration between the Cobb Department of Public Safety and Highland Rivers Behavioral Health. The renovations also included turning one outdoor space into a dog run. While preserving historic features like concrete floors, wood ceilings, and exposed brick walls, the makeover aims to offer modern comforts for residents. STORY 5: Georgia again collecting gasoline tax The temporary suspension of Georgia's gasoline tax, initiated by Gov. Brian Kemp in September, has expired. The state Department of Revenue will now resume collecting the 29 cents per gallon tax from motorists. The decision not to extend the suspension comes as fuel prices have dropped significantly, with Georgia currently having the third-lowest average price at $2.79 per gallon, according to AAA. The funding, part of the county's 2025 budget, includes $785,000 for overtime for police officers, firefighters, and 911 operators. The remaining $800,000 will cover security and traffic equipment, planning, training programs, and meals for staff. The fee, based on impervious surface area, would result in modest increases for most residences but substantial ones for large businesses. Gambrill argued that the fee does not address existing staffing shortages and criticized the approval of a 24-inch pipe that redirected stormwater onto another resident's property. STORY 5: New Georgia House map fits spirit but not letter of court order Georgia House Republicans released a proposed redistricting map that appears to fall short of creating the five additional Black-majority districts ordered by a federal judge. The proposed map includes three new Black-majority districts in the southern end of metro Atlanta. The map also creates nearly two dozen House districts with white minorities, providing an opportunity for people of color, including Hispanic and Asian voters, to elect candidates of their choice. The proposed map modifies the boundaries of 56 of the 180 House districts, stretching from Cobb and Gwinnett counties south through the metro region to Houston and Peach counties south of Macon. Welcome to Cobb Football Friday, where hosts Brian Giffin and John Bednarowski break down all the gridiron action from Cobb County! In this episode, we dive into the thrilling clash between Walton and Carrollton, where the Raiders dominated with an impressive 56-35 victory. Unlike last year's setback, Walton controlled the game from the kickoff, securing an early 14-0 lead and never letting Carrollton get closer than seven points. Quarterback Jeremy Hecklinski shone bright, completing 22 of 24 passes for 354 yards and three touchdowns. Running back Makari Bodiford added to the spectacle, rushing for a remarkable 176 yards and contributing three touchdowns. The Walton offense is rewriting the Cobb County record book, setting the stage for an exciting postseason. Next up on the docket is the pivotal matchup between Walton and Camden County, as the Raiders aim to reach the state championship game for the first time since 2011. The Wildcats enter the fray with momentum, coming off a commanding 39-20 victory over Mill Creek. Camden's unique Wing-T offense has amassed over 3,300 rushing yards as a team, showcasing a stark contrast to their 1,300 passing yards. The Wildcats boast a talented roster, including two-star defensive back Ja'Marley Riddle committed to East Carolina, two-star defensive lineman Denigel Cooper heading to Appalachian State, and the standout four-star tight end Elyiss Williams committed to Georgia. Leading the charge for Camden is coach Jeff Herron, a seasoned mentor with a storied career. Herron previously guided the Wildcats to three state titles in the 2000s, including an impressive streak of 13 consecutive region titles. After a coaching journey that took him to different states and schools, Herron returned to Camden in 2021 to rebuild the program, culminating in a remarkable 10-3 record this season. What makes this matchup even more intriguing is Herron's history, with his first head coaching stint in 1989 spent at none other than Walton. Tune in to Cobb Football Friday to get the inside scoop on this exciting semifinal showdown and hear the hosts analyze every play, highlight, and potential game-changer in the world of Cobb County football!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

BREAK: CU of GA STORY 1: In Marietta, It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas Marietta Square in the Gem City has adorned itself with holiday lights for Marietta Winter Wonderland, featuring Christmas-themed events such as pictures with Santa, storytime, and cookie and milk sessions. Santa's Magical Moments offer children a 30-minute experience with Santa, including crafts. Pictures with Santa will be taken at the Marietta History Center, starting December 1. The Downtown Marietta Development Authority ensured all trees in Atherton Square Park are festively decorated. Glover Park hosts the Festival of Trees, where local schools decorate trees. The annual Christmas tree lighting in the Square is scheduled for November 30, featuring performances, an ugly Christmas sweater walking parade, and Santa's arrival around 5:15 p.m. STORY 2: Braves Light the Tree at The Battery The Battery Atlanta celebrated the lighting of its 30-foot Christmas tree with two special guests, Santa Claus and Atlanta Braves manager Brian Snitker. The event drew around 5,000 to 6,000 people and featured live music, including Christmas tunes played by A-Town A-List. The tree is adorned with strobes and non-blinking lights, decorated in Braves and Battery colors. Snitker expressed his Christmas wish for another World Series title for the Braves, aiming for 2025 when Truist Park hosts the All-Star Game. This marks the seventh year of the Battery's Christmas tree lighting tradition. STORY 3: Acworth Public Safety Cadets Honored For State Championship Acworth's Public Safety Cadet Program, led by Acworth Police Cpl. Eric Mistretta, recently won the state championships for public safety cadets at the Law Enforcement Explorer Association of Georgia's conference. The cadets were honored by the Acworth Board of Aldermen for their achievement. The program provides hands-on training in various scenarios such as traffic stops, burglaries, and active shooter situations, preparing the cadets for careers in law enforcement and public safety. The state championship victory broke an 11-year winning streak held by Cobb Police Department's cadets. The program aims to develop leadership skills and offers valuable social experiences for participants aged 14-20. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Families of the victims attended the event, receiving white roses and having candles lit in their loved ones' honor. The vigil, attended by law enforcement and support organizations, aimed to provide solace and community for those affected by homicides. The guest speaker, Amanda Planchard, shared her experience as the older sister of Charles "Chet" Planchard, who was murdered in 1992. The event facilitated connections and remembrance, offering support to families dealing with tragedy. STORY 5: Kennesaw State Enrollment Surpasses 45,000 For the fifth consecutive year, Kennesaw State University's enrollment has increased, reaching 45,152 students for fall 2023. The university has witnessed continuous growth since fall 2019 when it had 37,807 students. Of the current enrollment, 5,763 students reside on KSU's Kennesaw and Marietta campuses. Kennesaw State, the third-largest university in Georgia, has experienced only one enrollment decline since fall 2014. The recent increase represents a 39% growth since 2014, with 40,395 undergraduates and 4,333 graduate students. The university attributes its appeal to diverse programs and expanded opportunities for research and experiential learning. We'll be back in a moment Break: DAYCO - DRAKE – INGLES 3 STORY 6: Nonprofits Highlighted With Trees at Town Center Mall Nonprofits in the Kennesaw area have adorned trees at the Town Center at Cobb mall for the second annual Festival of Trees. The event aims to raise awareness for various local nonprofit organizations by providing them with space to showcase their services. Fifteen organizations have decorated trees, each designed by their volunteers. The trees include information about the nonprofits and ways for residents to get involved. Pounce de Leon, a cat rescue organization, is one of the featured nonprofits, utilizing the opportunity to showcase its work and raise funds during the holiday season. The mall plans to make the Festival of Trees an annual tradition. STORY 7: Black Friday Turnout Down From Years Past The traditional Black Friday shopping experience, characterized by massive crowds and early openings, is evolving. While sizable crowds were observed at Kennesaw's Town Center Mall and Cumberland Mall on the day after Thanksgiving, shoppers noted that the crowds were noticeably smaller than in previous years. Online shopping is often blamed for this shift, but Chris McCoy, senior general manager at Cumberland Mall, pointed out that Black Friday deals now extend beyond the day itself, spanning the entire week or even the entire month of November. The change has contributed to a more spread-out and less intense shopping experience, with crowds estimated at around a quarter of those seen five years ago. The impact of online shopping and extended sale periods is evident in the changing dynamics of in-person Black Friday shopping. Gas prices have fallen for nine consecutive weeks, reaching below $3 a gallon in 11 states. The downward trend may continue, potentially dropping below last winter's $3.05 per gallon, depending on OPEC's decision on a production cut. Over 65,000 gas stations offer prices at $2.99 or less, contributing to an estimated $1.2 billion savings for Americans during Thanksgiving week. Despite favorable gas prices, 20% of respondents face budget constraints due to inflation in other areas. STORY 2: Georgia State Patrol and MCCD Intensify Efforts for Thanksgiving Travel Safety The Georgia State Patrol (GSP) and Motor Carrier Compliance Division (MCCD) are gearing up for the Thanksgiving travel period, spanning 102 hours from 6 p.m. yesterday to 11:59 p.m. on November 26. With AAA predicting 55.4 million travelers, GSP urges motorists to prioritize safety, emphasizing pre-trip vehicle inspections, adherence to speed limits, and avoidance of impaired or distracted driving. Colonel Hitchens stresses heightened patrol efforts to deter unsafe behaviors, noting the significance of arriving safely for Thanksgiving gatherings. Travel tips include obeying traffic laws, using seatbelts, and avoiding distractions. Last year, 749 crashes, 18 fatalities, and 390 DUI arrests occurred during the holiday period. Cobb Sheriff Uses Drone to Nab Suspect Marietta School Board to Issue Final Decision on "Flamer" 21st Annual MDJ Gobble Jog Fights Poverty This Thanksgiving All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! BREAK: CU of GA STORY 1: Cobb Sheriff Uses Drone to Nab Suspect Cobb County Sheriff Craig Owens praised the use of a drone unit in the arrest of 28-year-old Antonio Carter for violating probation. Deputies, serving a warrant at a Marietta motel, encountered Carter who fought with them, then fled into nearby woods. The drone unit, along with deputies and K9 units, tracked Carter to a neighboring apartment complex where he was found hiding in a laundry room. Carter was arrested without incident, showcasing the effective use of technology in law enforcement. Owens commended the diligence of the teams involved. Carter, facing probation violation charges, was previously arrested in April for multiple offenses. STORY 2: Marietta School Board to Issue Final Decision on "Flamer" The Marietta Board of Education is set to make a final decision on the fate of the book "Flamer" by Mike Curato at a special meeting. The book was removed from Marietta High School's library due to Superintendent Grant Rivera's judgment of "highly inappropriate, sexually explicit content." Parent Kayla Sargent filed an appeal to reinstate the book, arguing against book banning and claiming the removal is linked to the main character, Aiden, being gay. Broady, facing a reduction in Victims of Crime Act grant funding, sought county support. Gambrill questioned why other departments with staffing needs weren't considered and argued using insurance premium taxes was against board policy. Commissioner Jerica Richardson suggested strategic planning for county program funding. Despite acknowledging equity concerns, Commissioner Monique Sheffield emphasized the responsibility to protect Cobb residents. Chairwoman Lisa Cupid acknowledged Gambrill's points but stressed the importance of funding victim support services as mandated by state law. Gambrill criticized the decision, alleging campaign-related motivations. This marks an increase from his previous base salary of about $234,400, with an additional $10,000 annual bonus. Rivera has been serving as superintendent since January 2017, and the board expresses enthusiasm about his continued leadership in the district. Georgia state law limits superintendent contracts to three years, and the board has been annually extending Rivera's contract to meet this requirement. Total anticipated revenue is $3.93 million, primarily from taxes. Major expenditures include salaries, code enforcement, and legal representation, with $112,500 budgeted for mayor and council salaries, $431,500 for code enforcement, and other allocations. From the Henssler Financial Studio this is your news minute on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast presented by Engineered Solutions of Georgia. Today is Monday, November 13th and I'm Keith Ippolito. The Cobb County Board of Education witnessed partisan divisions as Democrats failed to end the school district's participation in a lawsuit over alleged racially gerrymandered electoral maps. Despite public criticism, motions by Democrats Becky Sayler, Leroy Tre' Hutchins, and Nichelle Davis were rejected by the board's Republicans. Sayler's attempt to disassociate from the law firm Freeman, Mathis & Gary, involved in the lawsuit, also failed. Hutchins' motion to condemn a statement from the firm, deemed political propaganda, also faced party-line opposition. BREAK: CU of GA STORY 1: Man Gets Life for Stabbing Murder of Girl An 18-year-old, Brayan Rivas, has been sentenced to life in prison, plus 20 years without parole, after pleading guilty to the murder of a female juvenile in Marietta in 2020. Rivas, associated with the MS-13 gang, attempted to initiate the victim. Marietta Police responded to a missing female juvenile report, finding that Rivas had confronted the victims, attempted to start a fight, and threatened them with a knife. Pursuing them into the woods, Rivas stabbed the girl to death. The motive was linked to gang initiation. The Cobb District Attorney called it one of the most heinous and senseless murders. STORY 2: Nickajack Elementary School Foundation Raises over $200,000 in 2023 Back the Jack campaign The Nickajack Elementary School Foundation has achieved a record-breaking fundraising campaign, surpassing its goal by raising over $200,000. The annual Back the Jack campaign received support from over 340 individual donors, contributing over $134,000, with additional corporate matches exceeding $25,000. Local businesses also contributed over $45,000. The funds will be used to support various educational programs, including STEAM days, an annual STEAM night, the Teach Grant program, and other initiatives. STORY 3: Marietta Council Approves Staff Raises and Wage Hike The Marietta City Council unanimously approved staff raises ranging from 4-7%, with the lowest wage increased from $15 to $17 per hour. City Manager Bill Bruton stated that the raises would cost the city $3 million annually, funded by delaying capital expenditures. The change came after staffing challenges, particularly in public safety and electric line workers, necessitated higher raises. The revised proposal includes 4% raises for general employees, 5% for electric line workers, and 7% for public safety personnel. The starting hourly wage for the lowest-paid employees was increased from $15 to $17. The raises will be effective from December 10. The Atlanta-based developer seeks to construct a 122-unit building, five stories at its tallest point, on a 1.25-acre lot downtown. The Historic Board of Review rejected two designs for the building. The council was divided on the issue, with Councilwoman Cheryl Richardson proposing a delay to work on a compromise. The council eventually voted 6-1 to table the issue for two months, with Mayor Steve “Thunder” Tumlin vetoing it, and later the council voted 5-2 to override the veto. STORY 5: Mayor Vetoes Mixed-Use Project at Former Harry's Farmers Market Site Marietta Mayor Steve "Thunder" Tumlin vetoed the City Council's 6-1 approval of a mixed-use development by Westplan Investors at a struggling shopping center. The project seeks to redevelop 19.25 acres near Roswell and Powers Ferry roads into a mix of retail and 236 apartments, down from the originally proposed 328, and 28 townhomes. Tumlin expressed concerns about the balance of apartments and townhomes and had hinted at a possible veto. The mayor's veto can be overridden by five council members. The property, already zoned for mixed-use development, requires council approval of its site plan for redevelopment. We'll be back in a moment Break: TEDS - DRAKE – INGLES 1 STORY 6: Cobb Schools Super Wants General Assembly to Consider Book Rating System The Cobb County School District in Georgia is considering advocating for a state rating system for books, similar to movie ratings, as part of its legislative priorities under a new "safety and security" category. The system aims to prevent inappropriate materials from being accessed by children. Some school board members, like Democrat Becky Sayler, expressed concerns about who decides what's inappropriate and the potential for outside influences to shape book selection. Superintendent Chris Ragsdale emphasized the need to exclude obscene, pornographic, lewd, and sexually explicit material, drawing parallels with existing content filtering laws like the Children's Internet Protection Act. STORY 7: Navy Chiefs Featured at New KSU Exhibit Kennesaw State University's Museum of History and Holocaust Education is launching a Veterans Day exhibit featuring artifacts from U.S. Navy chiefs. The exhibit highlights the history of Dobbins Air Reserve Base and its connection to multiple military branches, particularly Navy chiefs. Chief Petty Officer Keon Coates, a training coordinator at KSU, played a significant role in curating the exhibit, showcasing artifacts from his Navy service, including a unique paddle and a gold plate from West Africa. The second part features challenge coins collected by service members, symbolizing achievements and fostering camaraderie. The exhibit opens on Saturday and will run until November 2024. Today is Wednesday, November 8th and I'm Keith Ippolito. Election Results In a significant election night in Cobb County, Georgia, Mayor Clemons was re-elected in Austell, securing another term. Mayor Thurman clinched his third term in Powder Springs, and Smyrna's incumbent Dereck Norton retained the mayor's position for another term. Additionally, Stonecrest re-elected incumbent Jazmin Cobble, ensuring her continued leadership. Although there were no federal or state races, these results highlight strong support for these local leaders and their continued roles in their respective communities, underscoring the significance of these local elections. MDJ Script/ Top Stories for Nov 7th Publish Date: Nov 6th Commercial: Henssler :15 From the Henssler Financial Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast. Today is Saturday, November 7th and Happy Birthday to MLB HOF Jim Kaat. ***JIM KAAT – 1965 WS Gm.5 Goes the Distance*** I'm Dan Radcliffe and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Credit Union of Georgia Cobb gives thanks to veterans Smyrna's 'Her-story' Outlined in Lecture 'We can't get caught up in the noise,' Cupid says at fundraiser All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! BREAK: CU of GA STORY 1: Cobb gives thanks to veterans East Cobb Park hosted the "Give Thanks" veteran appreciation celebration, organized by United Military Care and the Aviation History and Technology Center. The event aimed to foster appreciation for veterans from various conflicts and educate younger community members about the importance of Veterans Day. Veterans from Vietnam, Desert Storm, and the War on Terror in Afghanistan and Iraq were present. Activities included live music, children's booklets about the military, scavenger hunts, and bounce houses designed like an aircraft carrier and a tank. An F-4 Phantom jet fighter cockpit simulator provided by the Aviation History and Technology Center allowed visitors to experience flying an aircraft using instruments. STORY 2: Smyrna's 'Her-story' Outlined in Lecture Local historians in Smyrna, Georgia, highlighted the often-overlooked contributions of women in the city's history. Women in the 19th and 20th centuries in Smyrna faced the "separate spheres philosophy," which limited their roles in society. Despite these constraints, women played significant roles in civic, educational, and philanthropic life. The historians shared stories of notable women, such as civic activist Lena Mae Green, Smyrna's first female mayor Lorena Pace Pruitt, and civil rights proponent Fanny Williams. A significant challenge in documenting women's contributions is the lack of recorded information about them, especially Black women. The event aimed to celebrate these women's stories and contributions to the community. STORY 3: 'We can't get caught up in the noise,' Cupid says at fundraiser A campaign fundraiser for Lisa Cupid, the Chair of the Cobb County Board of Commissioners, was hosted by Marietta attorney Justin O'Dell. The event aimed to garner support for Cupid's re-election campaign, scheduled for a year later. With Cobb County trending Democratic in recent years, Cupid, a Democrat, is in a favorable position. However, she already faces a Republican challenger, realtor Kay Morgan. Political scientist Kerwin Swint noted that Republican opponents would need to focus on powerful issues, raise significant funds, and mobilize their base effectively to challenge Cupid. Cupid's tenure as chair has seen her prioritize governance for the entire county, with a strong credit rating and sound management. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info. We'll be right back Break: ESOG – ELON – DAYCO STORY 4: Cobb Officials Discuss Tackling Opioid Crisis Cobb County has seen 145 fatal drug overdoses since October 2022, attributed to the presence of fentanyl in various drugs, leading to the creation of dangerous "designer drugs." Fentanyl is being mixed with substances like marijuana and pressed pills to enhance the high, but it can have fatal consequences. Experts warn that even small amounts of fentanyl can be deadly, particularly for those not accustomed to opiates. A significant concern is the combination of fentanyl with stimulants like meth. The county is working on harm reduction initiatives, including the distribution of Dispose RX and the introduction of CARES teams, which provide support and naloxone to individuals struggling with addiction. STORY 5: Austell Hopes to 'Breathe New Life' Into Former Mill The city of Austell is planning to redevelop the Threadmill Complex, a former mill site owned by the city, into a mixed-use development featuring housing, shops, restaurants, park space, and offices. Austell is seeking proposals from developers for the site, with a focus on creating a live, work, and play environment, including housing options that cater to young professionals, families, and seniors. The city hopes that the redevelopment will help address the issue of food deserts in the area and stimulate economic activity, making the complex a "self-sustaining economic engine" that can attract businesses such as grocery stores. The city aims to turn the complex into a "vibrant, multifunctional community hub." We'll be back in a moment Break: DRAKE – INGLES 8 STORY 6: Apple iPhone-maker Foxconn sees solid holiday demand despite October sales dip Apple's shares showed only a slight increase in pre-market trading following Foxconn's announcement that it would stick to its full-year forecasts despite a surprise dip in October sales. Foxconn, a major player in Apple's supply chain, saw a 4.6% drop in October revenues. However, it is anticipating a boost in demand from upcoming events like "Singles Day" in China and Black Friday in the U.S. Apple had recently released a holiday revenue forecast that fell short of Wall Street expectations, and its latest quarterly earnings showed a decline in Mac, iPad, and Apple Watch sales, although iPhone sales were up. The weaker U.S. dollar negatively impacted Apple's China sales. STORY 7: Cobb Drug Treatment Court Celebrates 20 Years of Changing Lives Cobb County's Drug Treatment Court celebrated its 20th anniversary with a message that it is an effective program that helps people overcome substance use disorders rather than throw them away. The court provides an 18 to 24-month drug treatment option as an alternative to incarceration. To graduate, participants must achieve a 90-day clean screen, meet treatment and case management requirements, give back through community service, secure housing, and gainful employment. The program has helped numerous individuals overcome addiction and restore their lives, as it focuses on health, family, and relationship restoration. The 20-year anniversary event highlighted the court's positive impact. Break: Henssler :60 Signoff- Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Marietta Daily Journal podcast.
