Known for its scratch-made chicken fingers and signature sauce, Guthrie's aims to blend its heritage with Marietta's evolving culture. The drive-thru operates daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., offering hand-breaded chicken fingers, cole slaw, fries, Texas toast, and their famous sauce. This new location will create about 35 jobs. Guthrie's, founded in Haleyville, Alabama, now has over 60 locations across 10 states, continuing its national expansion. STORY 2: Cobb to Consider Mt. Bethel Christian Academy Expansion Plan The Cobb County Board of Commissioners will review Mt. Bethel Christian Academy's expansion master plan during a zoning hearing. The plan aims to replace temporary classrooms with permanent buildings and relocate sports facilities on its high school campus, which can accommodate up to 625 students. The academy, independent of Mt. Bethel Church, faces a lease termination for its lower and middle schools, necessitating new facilities by 2028. Proposed changes include new academic buildings, improved traffic access, and relocated sports facilities, sparking opposition from local residents concerned about disruption and lack of detailed plans. Commissioner JoAnn Birrell plans a campus walkthrough before the hearing. STORY 3: 'You Deserve It': Veteran Detainees Presented with Resources at Cobb Jail Cobb County Sheriff Deputy Nedra Handia discovered numerous resources for veterans, including the Cobb County Veterans Accountability and Treatment Court and The Warrior Alliance, after connecting with Vietnam veteran Daniel Hydrick. Inspired, she organized a program for six veteran detainees to learn about these resources. With support from Sheriff Craig Owens, changes were made in the Cobb Jail, including a special wing for veterans. Detainee Gary Williams, a Vietnam-era Air Force veteran, appreciated the support and plans to share the information. The program emphasized hope and freedom, with Hydrick encouraging the veterans that the best is yet to come. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Vendors like Two Crafty Ladies of Georgia and Samantha Raeburn offered unique gifts and experiences, such as handcrafted decorations and "blind date with a book" packages. The event, supported by sponsors, featured fair rides and food vendors, making it a festive tradition for local families. STORY 5: No. 10: Cobb Schools Nixes $50 Million Event Center The Cobb County Board of Education canceled plans for a $50 million event center in July, following Superintendent Chris Ragsdale's recommendation due to economic concerns reminiscent of pre-2008 recession indicators. The board voted 6-0 to halt the project, initially approved in March 2023, which faced criticism for its cost and lack of detailed planning. Critics included board member Becky Sayler and the citizen group Watching the Funds — Cobb. Despite the cancellation, Ragsdale emphasized the ongoing need for such a facility but prioritized employee welfare over new infrastructure. Owner Chris Rimby designed the venue to host families and friends, featuring an outdoor patio, greenspace, and a stage for events. Officers at the scene labeled it a crime scene but provided no further details. Officer S.A. Barner, the Cobb Police Department spokesperson, stated that the STEP unit is investigating the serious collision and promised a press release with more information as it becomes available. Stay tuned for updates. STORY 2: Challenger Takes Fundraising Lead over Superior Court Clerk In the Cobb County Superior Clerk race, Republican Deborah Dance has overtaken Democratic incumbent Connie Taylor in fundraising. Initially trailing, Dance's donations surged to over $51,000 since July, while Taylor's remained stagnant at $21,175. Taylor's campaign has faced scrutiny due to controversies, including a judicial emergency in her office and allegations of mishandling passport fees. Dance's support includes significant contributions from local law firms and judges. Despite Taylor's initial lead, her performance has drawn criticism from both parties, with some Democrats endorsing Dance for her administrative capabilities. The election is set for next week. STORY 3: East Cobb, Acworth Voters Receive Incorrect Election Mailers Cobb County voters in two precincts received mailers with incorrect voting locations. Affected areas include Acworth 1C and Roswell 02. Acworth 1C voters should go to the North Cobb Senior Center, while Roswell 02 voters should head to Mt. Zion Methodist Church. Voters must use their assigned polling place on Election Day, but can vote at any location during early voting, which ends Friday. Cobb Elections Director Tate Fall stated the error is being corrected and urged voters to verify their polling place online. Poll workers will assist voters at incorrect locations on November 5. The pilot aims to provide transit access to less dense areas, with $2 billion of the $11 billion transit tax allocated for microtransit. The service, CobbLinc Go, is praised for its convenience and low cost, but questions remain about its long-term feasibility and integration with other transit options. The tax also includes plans for rapid bus routes and new transit centers. STORY 5: Cupid Discusses Nondiscrimination Ordinance at LGBT Forum Cobb Chairwoman Lisa Cupid discussed potential policy changes, including a countywide nondiscrimination ordinance, at an LGBTQ+ forum. Building on a previous meeting, Cupid suggested initiatives like recognizing Pride Month and increasing LGBTQ+ representation in board appointments. Community members were encouraged to engage with commissioners and support inclusive policies. The forum highlighted Cobb's past anti-LGBTQ+ stance and the need for local nondiscrimination laws, as federal protections are limited. Cupid acknowledged challenges in policy implementation and public support but emphasized the importance of pursuing inclusivity. The forum also addressed the potential impact of upcoming elections on these initiatives. BREAK: CU of GA STORY 1: Let's Get Boilin': Annual Sheriff's Low Country Boil Returns for 33rd Year The 33rd Annual Cobb County Sheriff's Low Country Shrimp Boilin' in Marietta brought together residents, officials, and community leaders for an evening of food and camaraderie. Started by Sheriff Bill Hutson decades ago as a corn boil, it has evolved under Sheriff Craig Owens into a shrimp boil with a diverse menu including barbecue, seafood, and more. About 1,000 attendees enjoyed the event, highlighting bipartisan support and fostering community engagement. The gathering featured live entertainment, family activities, and served as a platform for Sheriff Owens to connect with constituents ahead of his re-election campaign. STORY 2: Cobb to Decide Future of Two Canton Road Spas The Cobb Board of Commissioners is set to decide on the fate of Asian Wellness Massage and V Massage in Marietta, with hearings scheduled to determine whether to deny their health spa licenses. Both businesses allegedly violated codes, including employing unlicensed staff and lacking required permits. Owners Lingxia Zhang and Juan Xu appealed previous denials but were rejected by the License Review Board. If the denials are upheld, operations must cease immediately. Stunning Health opted not to appeal after receiving a suspension for similar violations. These decisions follow a county-wide pause on issuing health spa licenses amid concerns ranging from code violations to allegations of illegal activity like human trafficking. STORY 3: Cobb Schools Talks Property Taxes. Here's the Latest. The Cobb County Board of Education is convening a special-called meeting to discuss the tax digest and fund balance ahead of their upcoming vote on the millage rate. Chief Financial Officer Brad Johnson will present alongside Superintendent Chris Ragsdale, focusing on the district's financial outlook. The board aims to assess cash flow and the impact of property value increases on tax collections before finalizing decisions. They tentatively set an 18.7 millage rate, unchanged from last year, but rising property values could lead to higher tax revenues unless the rate is adjusted. Public hearings on the millage rate are scheduled for July 11 and July 18, with the board vote set for July 18 at their Marietta headquarters. His vehicle collided with another driven by 30-year-old Amber Singleton of Powder Springs. Scealf was pronounced dead at Wellstar Cobb Hospital, while Singleton sustained serious injuries and was taken to Kennestone Hospital. Cobb Police are requesting information from anyone who may have witnessed the incident and can be reached at 770-499-3987. STORY 5: New Eatery Brings ‘Italian Authenticity with American Convenience' to Kennesaw Pochino Italy, a new fast-casual restaurant near Kennesaw State University, was founded by Jennifer Erdman and Sam Lundy, along with Italian partners Andrea Casarin and Giuseppe Barbera. It offers customizable pasta bowls, Roman-style pinsas, and traditional Italian desserts. The menu aims to blend authentic Italian flavors with American preferences, adapting to local tastes while maintaining authenticity. Feedback-driven adjustments have already been made, such as adding protein options to pasta dishes. Located strategically near KSU, Pochino plans to expand locally and potentially franchise, with a focus on refining operations and establishing community partnerships, including with the university's athletic department. We'll be back in a moment. Break: INGLES 4 STORY 6: Gone Fishin': Cobb Fishing Rodeo Kicks Off at Hyde Farm Park The Cobb Parks Fishing Rodeo at Hyde Farm Park in East Cobb attracted young anglers aged 3 to 16 for a morning of fishing competitions. Organized by Cobb County Parks and Recreation, the event aimed to introduce children to fishing and promote environmental stewardship. Participants enjoyed activities like a fish-shaped cornhole game and popsicles while fishing for bream and catfish in the stocked pond. Experienced fishermen, including 80-year-old Tony Cobb, offered tips and camaraderie. Winners included Beppe Rude and his friend Luke Nunan, who caught a 22-inch catfish, demonstrating their strategy with an octopus circle hook in deep, shaded water. Each participant received a giveaway bag, and the event continues with three more competitions at different parks throughout July. STORY 7: Engineers rate Georgia “C+” in infrastructure Georgia's infrastructure earned a "C+" grade in a recent report from the American Society of Civil Engineers, indicating moderate overall condition. The state's highest marks were in ports and energy infrastructure, receiving "B+" grades. Bridges, freight rail, and schools followed with "B" grades. However, transit was rated lowest with a "D", reflecting historical underinvestment. Aviation received praise for improvement, particularly in rural areas benefiting from enhanced airport facilities. Despite achievements, challenges remain, highlighted by a "C+" grade for drinking water systems, underscored by recent emergencies in Atlanta due to water main breaks. Engineers stress the need for increased funding to meet growing demands amid population growth. East Cobb Whataburger Zoning Case Delayed Until June Whataburger is set to return to the Cobb Board of Commissioners next month to seek approval for its new east Cobb restaurant. The San Antonio-based fast food chain had requested a delay in its hearing before Tuesday's zoning meeting. According to County Zoning Manager John Pederson, Whataburger is still collaborating with local residents on the proposed building's design. The plan involves constructing a new 7,000-square-foot facility at 3550 Sandy Plains Road, within a shopping center anchored by Target, replacing a now-closed O'Charley's. However, this proposal challenges existing restrictions from a 1999 settlement that bans fast-food restaurants and drive-thru services at that location. Whataburger's site plan includes a two-lane drive-thru, which is a key point of contention. Notably, the chain is not seeking a rezoning, as the property already allows for restaurant use. Instead, they need approval for their specific site plan modifications. Currently, there are other Whataburger locations in Cobb, including two in Kennesaw, with another recently approved in Acworth For more news about our community, visit mdjonline.com. MDJ Script/ Top Stories for Nov 3rd Publish Date: Nov 2nd Commercial: Henssler :15 From the Henssler Financial Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast. BREAK: CU of GA STORY 1: Georgia Journalist Jim Wooten Dies at 78 Renowned Georgia journalist Jim Wooten passed away at the age of 78. He had a long and impactful career, serving as an editor and conservative columnist at the Atlanta Journal and later at the Journal-Constitution. Wooten was known as the "voice of conservatives" at AJC and was actively involved in the GOP, offering his time and mentorship to young leaders. In addition to his journalism career, he served in the Georgia Army National Guard, retiring as a colonel. Later in life, he and his wife, Ann, restored an historic home and received an award from the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation. A memorial service is scheduled for November 11. STORY 2: Mableton Mayor: 'Highly Likely' Citizens Will See Higher Natural Gas Prices The Mableton City Council is considering a 30-year contract with Austell Gas System, which could raise natural gas prices for residents. The contract is one of several franchise fee agreements being considered by Mableton with utility companies. The city collects franchise fees from utilities for using government rights-of-ways, and they are a significant source of revenue for the city. In this contract, Mableton would collect 3% of Austell Gas System's sales receipts, and the company is likely to pass that fee on to customers. The fees, though they may lead to higher utility costs, are necessary for a city that doesn't levy property taxes and require revenue to operate. STORY 3: MUST Ministries Opens Thrift Store in East Cobb MUST Ministries CEO Ike Reighard inaugurated the new MUST Marketplace thrift store in East Cobb. The thrift store was previously located in Marietta and has now moved to a 7,000-square-foot space in the Sandy Plains Village shopping center. The revenue generated from the thrift store will be reinvested in MUST's programs to support those in need. Realtor with Keller Williams Atlanta North Mariam DePriest and Senior Loan Officer Mike Rose with TowneBank Mortgage join the Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio podcast to share an overview of the real estate agency and its Live Luxury Division. DePriest and Rose sit down to chat with host Carol Morgan on the All About Real Estate segment. Before pursuing a career in real estate, DePriest studied broadcasting and worked as a news anchor, broadcaster and radio host before pivoting to advertising and marketing sales. DePriest dove headfirst into the real estate realm after 20 years in the sales industry to pursue a career she always held a passion for. Coming from similar backgrounds and pathways, DePriest and Rose attended the same high school in Atlanta and pursued careers in the broadcasting industry before transitioning to real estate. Located in East Cobb, Keller Williams Atlanta North is known as one of the first Keller Williams offices in the Southeast and a strong competitor in the area. Keller Williams Atlanta North is one of five officers under Broker and Operating Principal Jean Rawls and is the top producer in metro Atlanta with approximately 305 talented Realtors guided by Team Leader Jim Alexander. DePriest said, “We are among one of the most highly productive Keller Williams offices in the Southeast!” Mentioning the incredible works of Co-Owner of Keller Williams Kay Evans and the impact she has made on the real estate industry, DePriest goes on to explain that Keller Williams currently holds the top spots in luxury living, which is greatly due to Evans' creation of the Live Luxury division of the Keller Williams brand. The Live Luxury division provides unbeatable resources for luxury sellers who work with properties worth $750,000 and above, including a large percentage of Atlanta homes. DePriest said, “Kay Evans is one of the most incredible women I've ever known in my life and is one of the reasons Keller Williams is making such an exceptional stamp in luxury.” As an Atlanta native, DePriest has a deeply rooted connection to the area's marketplace. The 2017 neo-Nazi rally in Charlottesville was a coming out party for the extreme-right movement. From that ugly debut, white nationalist groups are now literally marching across the country. Most recently in East Cobb, Georgia, Jewish worshippers were terrorized at a synagogue by swastika brandishing thugs. With a jump in attacks against ethnic, religious, and sexual minorities, the FBI's far-right domestic terrorism warning sadly came true. White nationalism is now a clear and present danger to American democracy.Fernando goes deep into this threat with Jonathan Greenblatt, the CEO of the Anti-Defamation League, the nation's preeminent anti-hate group. Greenblatt previously served in the White House as Special Assistant to President Obama and Director of the Office of Social Innovation. He has also been a successful entrepreneur and corporate executive. Greenblatt is a Henry Crown Fellow at the Aspen Institute and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

The surveys, led by Dr. Bob Sargent of the state Department of Natural Resources, revealed average to above-average nesting success in the surveyed areas. This is particularly significant considering the impact of avian influenza on bald eagles and other bird species nationwide. The recovery of bald eagles in Georgia is considered a conservation success story, but the species is still listed as threatened in the state. The survey recorded 198 nest territories, with 150 being successful and 232 eagles fledged. These findings indicate that Georgia has maintained over 200 nest territories annually since 2015, with an increasing number of eagles nesting. The surveys are conducted by helicopter twice a year in different sections of the state, with the coast being surveyed annually. The positive results provide reassurance, especially regarding the coast, which experienced a significant decline in nest success rates due to avian influenza. This discrepancy is due to the omission of the floating homestead exemption, which is a tax relief measure for qualified homeowners exempting them from taxation on reassessed residential property value increases. Wiles clarified that the floating homestead exemption is still applicable for City of Marietta taxpayers, and it reduces the taxable amount owed. Cobb Superior Court Senior Judge Stephen Schuster's decision grants the plaintiffs' request to lift the pause and proceed with disaffiliation voting. This ruling reflects the ongoing schism within the UMC regarding social issues such as same-sex marriage and LGBTQ ordination. Story 3: Lawsuit Five residents of Mableton have filed a lawsuit in Cobb Superior Court, claiming that the legislation enabling the creation of the city is unconstitutional. The suit challenges the constitutionality of House Bill 839, which authorized the creation of Mableton as a city and community improvement districts (CIDs). The plaintiffs argue that the bill violates the state constitution's single subject rule by creating separate units of local government in one act. They also contend that including the creation of the city and the CIDs in the same ballot question violates legal precedent. The lawsuit seeks a declaratory judgment ruling that HB 839 and the city itself are void. The Black History Month dinner hosted by the city of Smyrna, called off multiple times in recent years because of the pandemic, convened Friday evening at the Smyrna recreation center. More than 150 people were eager to listen to the night's keynote speaker, Erica Armstrong Dunbar, author of “She Came to Slay: The Life and Times of Harriet Tubman.” Councilman Lewis Wheaton welcomed and thanked the guests for coming, reminding them that the proceeds from the evening would benefit the foundations for Griffin and Campbell middle schools, before introducing Dunbar to loud applause. Dunbar's goal was to reintroduce people to Harriet Tubman. Tubman is best known as the most famous conductor of the Underground Railroad — a network of secret routes slaves used during the 1800s to escape to freedom. Tubman would make the journey to lead people out of enslavement at least 13 times. Dunbar discussed how the Black Lives Matter movement reminds Americans of the people and names who have been and continue to be lost to violence, adding that social reform is an ongoing process. With her book, Dunbar said she was trying to tell the story of a complex woman who dedicated her life to social justice, and how her influence still inspires new generations. After the presentation, a long line formed to get books autographed by the author, particularly some young readers, who remarked that they really loved hearing about Harriet Tubman. Several hundred people ran full tilt into Lake Acworth on Saturday — some of them in costume. The brisk excursion was part of the “Polar Plunge,” an annual national fundraiser for the Special Olympics. The money will help run and sponsor athletes for the state's Special Olympics, which will be at Emory University in May. The event was jointly organized by the Special Olympics of Georgia and Law Enforcement Torch Run, a long-running campaign among law enforcement professionals who support the Special Olympics. Several local law enforcement agencies raised money and submerged officers and staff, including the Kennesaw and Acworth police departments, and the Cobb County Sheriff's Department, the latter of which won the costume contest by riding into the lake on toy horses. The water temperature inside the lake was estimated to be in the upper 50s. Matthew Wynne, a Special Olympics athlete who grew up in Alpharetta, said the cold water is part of what makes the event fun, and he wouldn't have minded if the water had been more frigid. Georgia Milton-Sheats, CEO of Special Olympics Georgia since 1999, ran into the lake alongside other Special Olympics organizers. She said almost 500 people raised money and registered for the plunge, and the event raised more than $230,000. State Senator Ed Setzler, filed legislation this week to reimpose Republicans' county commission district map on the Cobb Board of Commissioners. Senate Bill 236 mirrors the map passed last year by the General Assembly and signed into law by Governor Brian Kemp, which drew Democratic Commissioner Jerica Richardson out of her seat. The proposal comes after Setzler filed a bill — SB 124 — explicitly prohibiting Georgia counties from drawing their own district lines, which the commission's Democrats have been working to do since October. If passed, the tandem bills could overrule the Democrats' “home rule” effort designed to amend the district lines and keep Richardson in office. Though Republican officials, including Attorney General Chris Carr, have said the home rule bid is unconstitutional, Richardson and her two Democratic colleagues on the Cobb Board of Commissioners maintain the effort is legal. Richardson said were the legislation to be passed, it would end her tenure on the board. East Cobb resident Larry Savage, meanwhile, challenged the constitutionality of the home rule effort in a lawsuit filed just before the new year. That lawsuit was later withdrawn, with Savage saying a follow-up suit was forthcoming. That suit, however, has yet to materialize. Savage last said he was working with a new attorney but did not respond to a request for comment this week. Andrew Young Jr., former ambassador to the United Nations, former congressman, past mayor of Atlanta and civil rights icon, will be the keynote speaker at the Georgia Symphony Orchestra's annual Celebrity Luncheon fundraiser. The event will take place March 18 from noon to 3 p.m. at the Marietta Country Club. Ambassador Young will be joined by a group of local artists, authors, musicians and business leaders. Proceeds from the event will benefit the GSO's musical performance, youth education and outreach programs. Not only are guests certain to be inspired by Ambassador Young, but they also will select to be seated at a table with one of a carefully curated collection of influential and creative area personalities to learn more about them. A specially created three-course menu will be prepared by Gary Sanderson, Marietta Country Club executive chef, and his team. The event also will provide a fantastic opportunity for guests to indulge themselves from among an array of silent and live auction goods, such as rare trinkets and tidbits, fine art and everyday splurges. On March 11, Cobb County will be well represented in the 139th Atlanta St. Patrick's Parade as it marches down Peachtree Street in Midtown Atlanta. Ten local groups will participate in one the largest St. Patrick's parades in the Southeast, which draws hundreds of parade watchers from around the region. The parade will begin at noon at the intersection of Peachtree Street and 15th Street and will continue down Peachtree to 5th Street, concluding at 1:30 p.m. The Cobb County Groups are: - the 116th Army Band, Artz for the Harp, Atlanta Freedom Band, Atlanta Gaelic Athletic Association, Cosplay Volunteers of Atlanta, DREAM Dachshund Rescue, Firefighters Emerald Society of Metropolitan Atlanta, Georgia Smoke Diver Association, MIB DragonCon Parade Crew and Twilight Twirlers of Marietta #CobbCounty #Marietta #LocalNews - - - - The Marietta Daily Journal Podcast is local news for Marietta, Kennesaw, Smyrna, and all of Cobb County. Sherry Willingham, a bank teller at Fifth Third Bank in Merchant's Walk, was at work Monday when her daughter-in-law called. She asked Willingham if she had been contacted by the management of the Hamptons at East Cobb apartment complex at 1523 Roswell Road. Willingham lived on the second floor of the complex's 200 building. The fire had indeed broken out in Willingham's building, displacing her and nearly 40 more residents while also leaving a 74-year-old man dead. Thomas Alexander, or “Tommy,” as he was known to Willingham and others in the building, was found dead in apartment 226, just across the hall from Willingham's unit, following Monday's fire, according to Officer Shenise Barner, spokesperson for the Cobb Police Department. Willingham left work to check on her dog, a 14-year-old chihuahua named Chi Chi, and came home to find her building ablaze. Firefighters had rescued the dog, Willingham's emotional support animal since 2016, from the burning building. Though she is grateful she and Chi Chi are alive, Willingham is devastated, having lost her home. It adds to the traumas she has suffered in the last two decades: the death of her mother, a bout with breast cancer and a recent divorce. Police and the Cobb and Marietta fire departments responded to the fire around 11 a.m. Monday. Fire units were on scene within five minutes, the Cobb County Fire Department said in a news release, finding “heavy fire at the front of the building and flames through the roof.” Fifty firefighters and a dozen fire trucks responded. Cobb County has sued the contractors behind the largest water system project in county history, alleging their negligence led to a “massive and catastrophic failure” of a wastewater facility in 2018. The county's lawsuit — which seeks at least $39 million — accuses contractors J.F. Shea and Traylor Brothers of faulty welding in the construction of the sewage pumping facility. A 200-foot deep concrete shaft, the structure sits near the Chattahoochee River in south Cobb and pumps waste from a huge underground tunnel up to the county's treatment plant. J.F. Shea and Traylor Brothers — two of the country's largest construction firms, who completed the project under the joint venture Shea-Traylor — were hired in 2008 to construct both the pumping facility and the nearly 6-mile tunnel, and awarded a contract worth $305 million. Construction lasted nearly a decade, and was completed in February 2018. But the failure of the project happened less than a year later. On Dec. 30, 2018, per the county's lawsuit, a cover for one of the gates separating the wells from the tunnel system “suddenly ruptured and exploded upward.” The result was that liquid sewage flooded the pump chamber, spilling “a combination of rainwater, creek water, and untreated wastewater” into nearby Nickajack Creek, the county said at the time. The volume of the spill was some 113 million gallons. It took the county months to clear out the pump facility, the lawsuit says. The county alleges the failure was directly attributable to faulty welding and that Shea-Traylor hasn't helped with the cleanup or remediation efforts. Kennesaw State University is not the only major research university with a foothold in Cobb County. Just ask Ángel Cabrera, the president of the Georgia Institute of Technology. Cobb Chamber of Commerce Chairman Greg Teague did just that, interviewing Cabrera on the stage of the Coca-Cola Roxy at the chamber's monthly luncheon Monday. Cabrera, the 12th president of Georgia Tech, touted the Atlanta-based university's impact, across the U.S. and globally, but also in Cobb. He added that Georgia Tech is the fastest growing university in Georgia and the second fastest growing in the country over the last decade. And now, for two straight years, Cabrera said, Georgia Tech is the top spender for research among universities without a medical school, a title the Institute wrestled from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. A portion of that research takes place at the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI), Cabrera noted, which focuses on applied research, or research focused on solving real-world problems. About 900 of the nearly 3,000 research engineers and scientists in the GTRI are based at the Cobb County Research Facility, Cabrera said. The Cobb location of the GTRI is based at the Lockheed Martin campus adjacent Dobbins Air Reserve Base. With Jackie Smallwood Field, home of Marietta's baseball program, sitting at the low point of the school's campus, rainouts and a sloppy playing field were an issue each season. Now, after the recent completion of a $2 million upgrade to the Marietta baseball and softball facilities — featuring the installation of artificial turf surfaces — neither should be a problem again. New Marietta baseball coach Josh Davis said his players have raved about the facility upgrades, and it has allowed him to hold practice outside, while other programs around Cobb County have had to move indoors to get their work done. McKinney said the baseball and softball facilities were the first of Marietta City Schools' SPLOST VI projects to be completed. Other athletic projects still on the docket as part of the overall $71.5 million which include an LED video scoreboard for Northcutt Stadium, in addition to a scoreboard for the on-campus field that serves as home for Marietta's track and field, lacrosse and soccer programs. The project was done by Hellas Construction. The turf is called Major Play Matrix, which was created specifically for baseball and softball. It is designed to deliver “consistent and predictable ball response, a shock-absorbent field of play and a long-lasting investment.” A Marietta man previously convicted of stabbing his stepson to death over dirty dishes has once again been found guilty by a Cobb jury, the Cobb County District Attorney's Office announced. Aaron Edward Strong was found guilty of felony murder, two counts of aggravated assault and two counts of possession of a knife during the commission of a felony in the August 2015 attack of his stepson, 32-year-old Maurice Arnold, and step-grandson, 22-year-old DeAndre Arnold. Strong was granted a new trial in 2020 after the Georgia Supreme Court overturned his first conviction. According to the DA's office, Strong came home after a weekend away to the residence he shared with his wife Felicie Strong, Maurice Arnold and DeAndre Arnold on August 24, 2015. Strong, upset about dirty dishes in the sink, began a verbal altercation with his stepson and step-grandson, the DA's office said, and after Aaron Day, a neighbor and friend of DeAndre Arnold's, overheard the altercation in the background of a video game chat, he suggested Maurice and DeAndre Arnold leave the residence. As the Arnolds sought to retrieve some belongings from the home, Strong attacked Maurice Arnold with a hunting knife. As DeAndre Arnold attempted to stop Strong from continually stabbing Maurice Arnold, he was injured by Strong, the DA's office added. Police arrived at the scene and arrested Strong after talking to witnesses, according to the DA's office. Maurice Arnold later died from his injuries. A crucial heads-up play by Zach Bleshoy helped propel Pope into the Region seven six A championship game after a nail-biting 51-50 win over Alpharetta on Tuesday at Roswell High School. With 30 seconds left in the game, the Raiders had possession and Alpharetta leading scorer Bryant put up a shot that just missed off the front of the rim. It looked like the Raiders were going to keep possession as the ball was heading out of play, but Bleshoy found a way to give the ball back to the Greyhounds. He grabbed the ball, and as he was heading out of bounds, managed to throw it off an Alpharetta player. The win sends Pope into the region title game where it will face top-seed Blessed Trinity on Friday. The Titans beat Greyhounds 55-46 in mid-January and then 61-52 just over a week ago. Alpharetta will take on Sprayberry in the third-place game. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Nicholas Tiliacos, the owner of Marietta's Come-N-Get-It restaurant, has been charged with sexual assault against two employees, arrest warrants show. Both Cobb and Marietta police charged Tiliacos with multiple counts of sexual battery and cruelty to children against two individuals who worked at the restaurant. The alleged victims were underage at the time, per the warrants. The incidents allegedly occurred over the course of two years from 2020 to 2022, both at the restaurant and at Tiliacos' home in east Cobb. Tiliacos is accused by one victim of groping them multiple times over the two-year period without their consent. Similar allegations of groping were made by a second victim, who also alleged the incidents took place at both the restaurant and Tiliacos' home. It was unclear if the two alleged victims still worked at the restaurant. Joel Pugh, Tiliacos' attorney, declined to comment on the case. Tiliacos is out on a $60,000 bond after he was charged in October. He has yet to be indicted and his case is pending, per the Cobb District Attorney's office. More than two months after voters cast ballots to create a new city of Mableton, hundreds of residents turned out to continue the fight against cityhood with a single-minded purpose. They want out. A standing-room-only audience of hundreds packed the Cobb County Police Academy on Wednesday night, demanding an exit ramp from the first Cobb city to be incorporated in more than 100 years. Some said they'd never known they were in the city limits until they showed up to vote. Others, like Donna Georgiana, had simply assumed the proposal would fail like its counterparts in East Cobb, Lost Mountain, and Vinings — until it didn't. Georgiana told the MDJ she wasn't mixed up in the debate before the election, because “I really never thought it would pass, ever.” Through the town hall, pacing the stage was state Representative David Wilkerson of Powder Springs, who derided the 78,000-strong Mableton as “the largest H.O.A. in Cobb County.” Wilkerson has emerged as one of Mableton's fiercest critics since the city's referendum passed in November with 53% of the vote. Highlighting what he called “open questions” that remain after the referendum, he plans to introduce legislation this year to de-annex from the new city several precincts that voted “no” in the referendum. But the loudest voices Wednesday came from the audience, who wanted above all the answer to this question: what can we do? Wilkerson said for now, their best bet is with lawmakers under the Gold Dome. But the key, he said, will be persuading the entire Cobb County Legislative Delegation to get on board with the proposal, and he encouraged attendees to lobby their representatives hard in the coming months. Options on the table could include a “surgical” de-annexation of areas that voted against cityhood (predominantly in the city's northeast), or a do-over of the election entirely. That latter option got some of the most spirited cheers of the night. But state Representative Sharon Cooper, of east Cobb, told the MDJ Thursday that lawmakers will likely want to hear from both sides of the issue before jumping to a legislative fix Walker did not have to look far to find its new football coach, promoting T.J. Anderson to lead the Wolverines' program. Anderson has been at Walker for two years as associate head coach and offensive coordinator. Anderson has experience at all levels of football. A graduate of South Gwinnett High School, he was a running back at Georgia Southern and was part of the Eagles' 2000 national championship in what was then NCAA's Division I-AA. He also won three Southern Conference championships under coaches Paul Johnson and Mike Sewak. Anderson, who also played in the Arena Football League for two years, returned to Georgia Southern in 2018 to served as the director of high school relations under then-coach Chad Lunsford. He also has experience in high school as an assistant coach at Westminster, Mountain View and Etowah. Anderson succeeds interim coach Tom Evangelista and becomes the fifth head coach since the beginning of the 2020 season. During that time, Walker has gone 3-25. No longer science fiction, the use of artificial intelligence to recognize and match faces to public images harvested from the internet is a reality the Cobb County Police Department wants people to understand and support. Members of Cobb police spent two hours discussing the use of facial recognition technology and their new contract with Clearview AI, hoping to alleviate concerns and inform the 25 residents gathered for the District 3 town hall meeting Wednesday night at the Tim Lee Senior Center Cobb Police Chief Stuart VanHoozer said the technology is secure and would only be used by law enforcement in a limited capacity, likening it to receiving an anonymous tip. The majority of the questions asked by the public dealt with fears of living in a surveillance state. It was mainly up to Cobb Police Captain Darin Hull of the Violent Crime Bureau to make the case for using the technology in a safe, secure manner to rapidly apprehend suspects. Hull repeatedly emphasized how the technology would not be abused and how “guardrails" would be in place. The 150-year-old covered bridge on Concord Road in Smyrna has been reopened after it was once again hit by a vehicle and closed for repairs. Cobb DOT was repairing the protective beam of the bridge Friday morning, according to the county. "Concord Road has been reopened to (hopefully height appropriate) traffic," the county said on its Twitter. "The bridge is fine." The historic covered bridge has been the site of crashes and closures that have grown too numerous to count, the most recent occurring in December. The bridge's low clearance, indicated by abundant signage around the bridge, is the cause of most of the accidents. The bridge was built in 1872 and is the county's only remaining covered bridge still in use. In 1980 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Officials symbolically shoveled dirt downtown on Thursday afternoon to mark the start of a new, $6 million amphitheater at Depot Park. Construction will begin February 1 and is scheduled to last 12 months. Kennesaw staff said that timeline is subject to adjustment, if the project is hampered by weather or supply chain issues. Once complete, the amphitheater will hold between 1,500 and 2,000 people, according to City Manager Jeff Drobney. The design calls for a 50-foot by 42-foot stage, with turf grass terraces fanning out from there. The project also includes new restrooms and storage space, and the renovation of the Community House. The amphitheater will cap off a long-running, eight-phase master plan for the park, which now boasts a playground, open play field, walking trail, picnic tables and benches. Construction of Depot Park was funded by successive rounds of 1% special purpose local option sales tax dollars. The amphitheater will be funded by the 2022 round of SPLOST, which began collecting revenue last January and will run through the end of 2027. #CobbCounty #Georgia #LocalNews - - - - - The Marietta Daily Journal Podcast is local news for Marietta, Kennesaw, Smyrna, and all of Cobb County. After last month's announcement that the Atlanta Braves will soon become their own publicly traded company, team officials were quick to say little will change, baseball-wise. “From our perspective, from a Braves' team perspective, it's business as usual,” President and CEO Derek Schiller told investors at a November 17 meeting. Braves Chairman Terry McGuirk echoed that sentiment in a letter to workers for the Braves and the Battery Atlanta. But business-wise, the Braves' financial separation from owner Liberty Media could have significant implications down the road. The Braves are currently traded as a “tracking stock” — a subset of Liberty Media that's still tied to the firm's overall performance, but represents one of its subsidiaries. Pending approval by shareholders and Major League Baseball, the Braves will become a fully separate entity within the next six to eight months, executives have said. Fans and financiers alike will then be able to purchase a stake in the team. Liberty CEO Greg Maffei has said repeatedly the impetus for the spinoff comes from a desire to showcase the Braves' value independent of Liberty as a whole. The stock will represent not only the team and its assets, but the Battery Atlanta and the Braves Development Company, the latter of which manages the team's real estate holdings. The announcement itself came two weeks after Breach Inlet Capital, a South Carolina-based investment firm that counts itself among the Braves' top 25 shareholders, called for a spinoff of the stock. In an open letter to Liberty's board, the firm argued the Braves' tracking stock was trading at about 60% less than its true value. The letter pointed to the Braves' continued success, and argued the team is relatively undervalued compared to other major sports franchises. Breach Inlet Capital founder Chris Colvin speculated the Braves' undervaluation was due to Liberty's “confusing and convoluted structure,” referring to Liberty's ownership of Formula 1 racing, Sirius XM, and other media empires. In other words, the Braves' true value isn't apparent because it's tied up in Liberty's many and varied financial holdings. Mount Paran Christian School announced that Peter Hill is the new Head of Middle School, beginning in the 2023-2024 academic year. Hill comes to MPCS from Catholic Memorial School in Boston, Massachusetts, where he is a member of the Academic Leadership Team, a history teacher and varsity head soccer coach. With vast independent school experience, he has taught a variety of history courses, including AP Comparative Politics, where his students over the years have earned an astounding 94% pass rate. He has served as the International Student Coordinator, developed and implemented the faculty peer mentoring program, and advised and mentored faculty to better enable bilingual students using translanguaging pedagogy. Prior to Hill's time at Catholic Memorial, he taught at Marianapolis Preparatory School in Connecticut and St. Paul's School in New Hampshire. He holds a bachelor's degree in history from Dartmouth College and a master's degree in curriculum and instruction from Boston College. For Kim McCoy, head of the Cobb District Attorney's victim and witness office, the long road toward the county getting its own family advocacy center began 25 years ago. Way back in 1997, she and Jason Saliba, now Deputy Chief Assistant District Attorney, toured San Diego's own center for victims and thought, “We've got to have this in Cobb County.” The center isn't quite open for business — District Attorney Flynn Broady said he expects it to open in March or April of 2023. But when it does, the location on Fairground Street will be a hub for victims and survivors of abuse to get help and resources under a single roof. The center was partially funded with a $400,000 grant from the state, and will be the first of its kind to open in Georgia. When family advocacy centers are implemented in communities, there's a corresponding reduction in domestic violence homicides, a reduction in childhood trauma, and with that, better outcomes for families. As part of that mission, the DA's office is partnering with several of Cobb's well-established nonprofits such as LiveSAFE Resources, the Center for Family Resources, and SafePath Children's Advocacy Center. Along with staff from the county and its public safety and prosecutorial partners, those nonprofits and community groups will have representatives on-site as well. Broady told the MDJ his office is working on setting up a 501(c)(3) nonprofit so that community members and businesses can support the center going forward. Walton's Jeremy Hecklinski wasted little time turning a breakout junior season into finding a place to play his college football. The 6-foot-1, 175-pound quarterback committed to Wake Forest on Wednesday, making his announcement on social media. Hecklinski is coming off a season in which he threw 3,520 yards, 37 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, while also running for five scores. Hecklinski played his best in arguably the biggest game of the season, in which he led Walton to an upset of Buford in the second round of the Class AAAAAAA state playoffs. In that game, he threw for 315 yards and two touchdowns in beating the Wolves — a consensus top-10 team nationally — on their home field. Hecklinski chose Wake Forest over offers from Central Florida, Georgia Southern and Eastern Kentucky. His recruiting was just starting to heat up, as it had been reported that Georgia, Georgia Tech, Cincinnati, Duke and Florida State had become interested. Hecklinski was expected to announce his commitment next spring, but he told SI.com that everything just felt right this week. The City Council Wednesday night unanimously approved allocating the the majority of the city's remaining federal COVID-19 relief funds for a pair of new parks. Marietta received roughly $11 million from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), and had already allocated portions of it for a new public safety training center, replacing a water tower, affordable housing, wellness initiatives for public safety employees, repairs to a fire station and the Cobb Veterans Memorial. The city has broad discretion over the use of the ARPA funds. Wednesday's vote puts $1 million of the remaining funds toward capping a 57-acre landfill on Merritt Road, behind Lockheed Elementary, to build a new city park. Another $2 million will be offered to Cobb County for 20 acres of park land at Anderson and Burnt Hickory roads, west of Kennesaw Mountain. In October, Marietta Mayor Steve “Thunder” Tumlin recommended the city consider purchasing the land off Burnt Hickory Road from the county, which includes Schmidt Pond, a catch-and-release fishing site. Marietta would then turn the land into a city park. At the council's committee meetings on November 29, Tumlin again brought up the prospect that a future attempt to incorporate a city of Lost Mountain in west Cobb could mean Cobb would be forced to sell the Anderson Road land at a far cheaper price. Under state law, county parkland can be purchased by new cities at $100 per acre. The proposal for a city of Lost Mountain was rejected by voters in May, along with proposals for cities of East Cobb and Vinings. Tumlin said in November the county could be motivated to sell the land to Marietta “because cityhood might raise its beautiful head again.” Should the county reject Marietta's offer, the $2 million would return to the city's COVID relief fund. It may have been a cloudy day, but that didn't dampen the spirits at the 9th Annual Thanksgiving Classic hosted by the Marietta Country Club. After a Chick-fil-A breakfast, the golfers were cheered on with pompoms and great enthusiasm from the YELLS ( which stands for Youth Empowerment thru Learning, Leading and Serving) Inc. kids at the shotgun start. The day-long event saw a record number of 144 golfers participating. Each year the tournament committee selects a recipient from the Cobb County area. To be eligible, the non-profit must benefit and impact children's lives. This year the selected beneficiary was YELLS. Previous recipients include such worthy organizations as the Center for Children and Young Adults, Marietta Police Athletic League, KSU CARE, Marietta Student Life Center, Devereux Center, Wellstar Cancer Center and Hospice Angel Fund. Over the past, nine years the event raised over $850,000. The goal for next year is to surpass $1 million in donations. With the generosity of the players and sponsors, the Marietta Country Club was able to make a huge impact on YELLS Inc. with the presentation of a $150,000 check. YELLS empowers youth to rise as active, healthy and productive servant-leaders within their communities. YELLS is a 501(c)3 non-profit youth development organization based in the Franklin Gateway community of Marietta. #CobbCounty #Georgia #LocalNews - - - - - The Marietta Daily Journal Podcast is local news for Marietta, Kennesaw, Smyrna, and all of Cobb County. A pre-Thanksgiving service at Temple Kol Emeth, a southern reform Jewish synagogue, included an Islamic call to prayer, a guided meditation, and a bhangara dance performed by a local Sikh organization. The event, held a week before the holiday, was the 18th annual Ecumenical Thanksgiving Celebration, and it brought together faith leaders and congregations from across metro Atlanta. The theme was “finding common ground,” something Larry Sernovitz, Kol Emeth's senior rabbi, said is increasingly difficult and important in a divided world. #CobbCounty #Georgia #LocalNews - - - - - The Marietta Daily Journal Podcast is local news for Marietta, Kennesaw, Smyrna, and all of Cobb County.
